SUPERIORE.DE
"Deep red. Ample aromas of blackberry, red cherry, and violet, plus a whiff of violet. Dense, creamy and concentrated, offering savory flavors of ripe red cherry, licorice and cocoa lifted by nicely integrated acidity. Finishes quite fleshy, with youthfully chewy tannins and outstanding length. This Brunello may not be the last word in refinement, but it is hard to argue with its early appeal and deliciousness." Vinous
"Valdicava's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is a beautifully saturated expression that opens to a dark garnet appearance and a soothing, velvety texture. The bouquet is packed tight with dark berry nuances, starting with ripe cherry and extending to black fruit tones of fresh prune and plum. The wine's strongest cards are its texture, structure and its power. This is a cool vintage that produced very fine and accessible wines. This expression, however, shows a very different personality with ample volume and long staying power." Robert Parker
"A juicy, young Brunello with berry, dried mushroom and flower character. Orange peel, too. Full body, firm and velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. So complex and beautiful. It goes on for minutes. I love the balance that makes it so enjoyable to try now but it will age for decades ahead. Try to leave it until 2021." James Suckling

SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is a perfect example of how unique this vintage really is. This is remarkably pretty and inviting with a brilliant display of sugar-dusted cherries, dried strawberries and crushed lavender candies. Its medium-bodied framework carries silky textures across the palate in an expression that is both delicate yet potent, savory yet sweet, and with outstanding purity of fruit. Rounded tannins linger, creating a lightly structured feel, as rosy inner florals combine with sour citrus and notes of licorice that linger incredibly long. This is unlike any vintage of Valdicava that I’ve ever tasted, and yet I can’t help but come back to the glass over and over again. Only 800 cases of the 2017 Brunello were produced, which is mostly fruit from Madonna del Piano and Montosoli. Don’t miss it." Vinous
"The Valdicava 2017 Brunello di Montalcino shows a soft level of vintage ripeness that translates into dried strawberry or cooked cherry. These nuances are delicate and fine, however, and they are mitigated by the wine's acidity and the general clarity of the bouquet. Compared to past vintages, this 2017 is more accessible, but Valdicava has never been short on elegance or pedigree. Even that accessibility I mention is relative, because these wines have an excellent track record for longevity despite vintage variation." Robert Parker
"Intense aromas of flowers and dark cherries. Perfumed and bright for the vintage. Full-bodied and firm with chewy yet polished tannins and a succulent and fruity finish that is in line and framed. Try after 2023." James Suckling

"The Valdicava 2016 Brunello di Montalcino shows a subtle bouquet that needs extra time to open. In fact, I suggest you open your bottle about four hours before serving. This Brunello takes its time, but it inches over the senses with carefully increasing intensity. Wild cherry, toasted almond and even a touch of sweet apple or orange peel distinguish the bouquet. The tannins are firm and young, but all they need is extra time to evolve. This wine is like being introduced to a stranger who takes his time to reveal his personality, but who then turns into a true friend and confidant. Patience is required." Robert Parker
"Fleeting aromas of cherry, cedar, sanguine and leather give way to a beam of ripe cherry, berry and earth flavors in this elegant red. Firm and resonant, with a matrix of dusty tannins on the long finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is one of those young wines that, from the moment you put your nose to the glass, you know you’re in for a treat. A sweetly alluring and remarkably fresh bouquet of crushed cherries, strawberries and plums is further complicated by hints of clove, spiced orange peels and mint. It’s velvety-smooth and radiant with a display of dark red fruits, all tightly wound up in a web of minerals, with an air of savory herbs and inner florals that develop toward the close. Try to keep your hands off for another four or five years, and then reap the rewards for a decade or more." Vinous
"Attractive aromas of balsamic, tea, dark berry, walnut and coffee bean. Full-bodied, yet tight and very intense with ripe tannins that are fine and reserved. Racy and polished. Beautiful length to this wine. Needs at least two to three years to come. Try after 2024." James Suckling

Funkelndes, tiefes Rubinrot. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a dark and thickly extracted expression. It is one of the blackest Brunellos you will find in this report. This rich red wine takes a little longer to open because those primary aromas are buried deep under all that bulk and power. Indeed, this wine is almost too much of a good thing. It moves with slow-motion laziness, and the bouquet is in absolutely no rush to show what it has in store. At its leisure, it will deliver dried blackberry, cassis, bitter chocolate, spice, campfire ash and sticky tar. There is some tannic astringency that will (hopefully) integrate with time. This is a hearty and satisfying wine to drink in the heart of winter with gentle snowflakes fluttering outside your window. It is a romantic wine in heart and soul." Robert Parker
"Deep ruby-red. Toasty oak and vanilla complicate red cherry and underbrush aromas and flavors. Then rich, dense and concentrated, but lovely violet lift provides clarity and cut to the suave flavors of red cherry, red currant, flint and vanilla. Much deeper and richer than the 2013 Brunello from Valdicava, this beautiful wine finishes very long and ultra-smooth. It is the best wine I have ever had from this estate." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)
"A complex red with rose petals, violets, crushed stones and cherries follows through to a full body and chewy tannins that are poised and polished. Extremely long and intense. A top wine for the vintage. This needs three or four years, maybe more, to come together." James Suckling

Dunkles Kirschrot.
Falstaff
"Deep ruby. Slightly reticent nose hints at black cherry, herbs and flint. Then juicy and bright, with deep flavors of minerals, blueberry and red cherry, complicated by peppery herbs. Closes long with repeating mineral nuances. A sleeping giant, the fruit is having a tough time emerging currently but I’d say there’s plenty there, just lying beneath the wine’s noble tannic cloak. Cellar this very refined Brunello for five or six years to see how it develops." Vinous
"Ripe, offering cherry, plum and floral aromas and flavors, matched to a rich texture. Tobacco and iron notes emerge as this builds to a lengthy finish. A touch dry on the finish, but the sweet fruit returns in the end." Wine Spectator
"Earthy aromas of wild berry, new leather, truffle and exotic spice emerge from the glass. The concentrated, vibrant palate delivers dried black cherry, licorice, tobacco and black pepper alongside fine-grained tannins." Wine Enthusiast
"Showing ripe and balanced fruit, the Valdicava 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano offers many very positive attributes. The wine flaunts a slightly contemporary or international side, and it does so with extreme confidence and elegance. Much of that natural balance comes directly from the classic vintage that exhibits both the structure and acidity necessary for prolonged cellar aging. Now, in the wine's youngest phase, it offers lush primary cherry and blackberry flavors followed carefully by measured spice, toast and red rose potpourri." Robert Parker
"This opens with savory, truffle and meaty aromas with a complex and quite cryptic nose that delivers a wealth of ripe plums and cherries, cedar and fresh, violet-like flowers, as well as some earthy nuances. The palate has a very sturdy, intense and power-charged core of rich plums and dark cherries, framed in quite fierce tannins that are so long. Super Brunello Riserva here with great potential." James Suckling

"Beginning to mellow now after 10 years, revealing a bouquet of leather, licorice, macerated cherry, iron and cigar box. Very fresh, lively and focused, with sweet cherry and plum fruit at the core, firm, refined tannins and a long aftertaste of leather and stone." Wine Spectator
"The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is another super- finessed wine. Subtle floral notes meld into expressive red berries in a sumptuous Brunello that captures the essence of the vintage. The style is rich and deeply textured, but the 2007, as outstanding as it is, needs at least a few more years in bottle. Once again, finesse rules the day." Vinous

"An impressively structured wine. Aromas of blueberries and blackberries with hints of violets. Full body, with velvety and rich tannins. Very tannic and powerful yet the tannins are polished and pretty. Layers of everything here. Give this another three to four years before opening." James Suckling
"Here's an unforgettable wine that absolutely makes the case for 2007 being one of the best vintages of late in Montalcino. The wine is broad and polished with masculine tones of dark fruit, leather and tobacco. These aromas evolve so quickly and with such pulsing intensity, the wine comes alive suddenly. There are dusty mineral shadings at the back with tightly textured tannins. Hold 10 more years." Wine Enthusiast

"Here is a big wine with lofty ambitions and an impactful presentation. The Valdicava 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano hits all the right buttons. The wine shows a profound sense of elegance and poise with subtle berry notes that blend into spice, licorice and tar. This wine promises a long and steady aging future ahead." Robert Parker

"The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano continues to develop very positively. This huge, concentrated Madonna del Piano dazzles for the richness of its fruit and the delineation of its aromas. The clean, vibrant finish suggests many years of cellaring potential. The Valdicava Brunellos are often misunderstood when young because they possess so much richness, but with time in bottle the wines turn more delicate and complete." Robert Parker

SUPERIORE.DE
"There’s a mentholated freshness to the 2015 Madonna del Piano Riserva which draws you in, as a seductive display of crushed black cherries, cinnamon, sage and sweet white smoke holds your attention firm. It’s silky in feel yet far more lifted than expected, with wave after wave of tart wild berries and savory spices which drench the palate in concentrated fruit, as if you can feel the skins, pips and all. Just when you think that the 2015 will release you from its structured clenches, its coating of grippy tannins comes forward, and it remains throughout the tension-filled and purple-tinged finale. This will require many years of cellaring to reveal its charms, coming across as far more structured than most other Brunello Riservas from the vintage; yet there’s plenty of fruit to keep pace throughout the wine's evolution." Vinous
"The Valdicava 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a lovely wine that finds nice balance between power and elegance. You get the character of the fruit with dried cherry, cassis and cranberry and delicate nuances of grilled herb, cola and blue flower. The bouquet also shows lots of balsam intensity with root beer and rosemary oil. These two sides of the wine reach equilibrium, and the only thing needed here is more cellar aging time. There is a point of youthful tannic astringency that needs to unwind and integrate." Robert Parker
"Cherry, berry and wild herb flavors mark this linear red, which is pure and vibrant, with refined tannins and bright acidity underlying it all. The mineral-tinged finish is fresh and long, with fine harmony in the end." Wine Spectator
"Spectacular aromas of crushed fruit, plums, sous bois, porcini and black truffles. Decadent year, but fresh. Full-bodied, dense and linear on the palate, yet so much in balance and refined with incredible depth and consistency. The savory and juicy finish, with vivid acidity and fruit, is eye-opening. Greatest ever." James Suckling

SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is totally captivating: deep, dark and viral. It smolders up from the glass, with a thrilling mix of cherries and plums complemented by notes of black tea, balsam herbs and ashen stone. With each return to the glass, this seems to expand further, adding nuances of smoke and animal musk. The 2016 is packed full of energy but also youthful tension, showing the radiance of the vintage with its citrus-tinged fruits and depths of minerality. Through it all, energizing acidity maintains harmony, just as fine tannins slowly saturate, resulting in a long finish that resonates on licorice and purple-tinged inner florals. The 2016 is one of the most balanced, yet also prettiest, expressions that I have ever witnessed from Valdicava’s Madonna del Piano." Vinous
"The Valdicava 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano impresses for its intensity, its balance and its freshness. The wine is medium to full-bodied with a good amount of fruit weight and power that is offset by acidity and the lifted, vibrant quality of the bouquet. If balance is the objective, this wine meets it goals, although like with many of its peers, you certainly won't miss the deep inner power of this determined Brunello." Robert Parker
"Expressive yet complex, this red is already revealing tertiary hints of truffle, fading roses and spice. Features cherry, raspberry, iron, eucalyptus and anise flavors allied to a firm, compact structure. Balanced and long, with fresh fruit, spice and mineral accents lingering on the endless finish." Wine Spectator
"This is heavenly on the nose with fresh flowers such as violet and cherries with undertones of freshly shaved sandalwood. It’s full-bodied with very fine tannins that are focused and intense with a polished nature. This is a complete wine that impresses at every level. Give it at least five to six years to come together and resolve the tannin structure. Better after 2027." James Suckling

Super Brunello Riserva here with great potential." SUPERIORE.DE

"This is the first commercial release of Montosoli from Valdicava and shows incredibly complex and decadent aromas of fruit, wet earth, forest floor, leaves and cedar. Full-bodied with tannins that roll off the palate and flow to the finish. Fine, velvety texture. Lasts for minutes. Already so attractive, but be patient." James Suckling

"This is a new wine from Valdicava that is presented in quite the statement bottle with stunning artwork that depicts an allegory to a saint. With fruit from one of the most celebrated crus in the appellation, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli needs quite a bit of extra time to open. I followed my sample's evolution over a 24-hour period to get a better look inside. This wine requires extra patience. On my first tasting, I found that the fruit struggled to come through, and I recorded notes of white pepper, savory herb, campfire ash and crushed stone. Blue flowers like dried lilac and lavender also appear. When I came back to the bottle a day later, I found that the bouquet had gained in detail, sharpness and increasingly articulate specifics. But it took its time. To the palate, the wine is dense and firm, and I have no doubt as to its long-term aging potential." Robert Parker
"This is focused like a laser beam, with cherry, plum, chocolate, iron and leather flavors defined by bracing acidity. The fine-grained tannins are civilized as this plays out on the mouthwatering, fruit-filled finish. Best from 2024." Wine Spectator
"Here in its second vintage, the Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli is taking no prisoners. It wafts up with a beguiling and sultry display, with savory cherry sauce and sage giving way to spiced citrus peels, smoky minerals, animal musk and black olive tapenade. Youthfully dense and velvety upon entry, it offers masses of dark red and black fruits, contrasting almost salty nuances with a dark chocolate bitterness that creates tension and complexity. The 2016 builds like a crescendo, gaining in intensity and verve, right up until the moment that its gritty tannins take firm hold of the palate and refuse to let go. Still, echoes of licorice, blackberry and cooling herbal tones linger. It closes up rather quickly in the glass today, becoming monolithic and austere, yet the gorgeous snapshot received over the first ten minutes after opening it delivered a wonderful preview. I can’t wait to see what future vintages hold for the Vigna Montosoli, as it is one of the best young wines I’ve ever tasted from Valdicava." Vinous
"Wow. The aromas of black cherries, plums, walnuts, lavender and cedar are really beautiful. Full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and beautiful polish to the power and intensity. Gorgeous, sweet and ripe fruit at the end with peach and citrus character to the plums. Sophisticated and glorious. Drink after 2025." James Suckling

"Valdicava has been somewhat of a controversial property over the last few years. The Brunellos are typically very concentrated and dense when young, which can make them hard to assess. Make no mistake about it though; these are very serious wines whose only difficulty lies in giving them a few more years in bottle than the vast majority of Brunellos. A vertical tasting last year going back to 1988 published on www.erobertparker.com showed that the Valdicava Brunellos age exquisitely." Robert Parker
