SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2017 Meriggio is a pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc from the heart of the Panzano in Chianti growing area. This is a fresh and luminous wine with a pretty bouquet of citrus, white peach and honeydew melon." Robert Parker

"The 2017 Meriggio (Sauvignon Blanc) is intriguing. Aging a portion of the wine in amphora gives the 2017 added structure and minerality, both of which are remarkable given the warm, arid conditions of the year. Translucent and energetic, the 2017 has a lot going on" Antonio Galloni

    • Chianti Classico DOCG 2015 (BIO)

      Chianti Classico DOCG 2015 (BIO)

Weinwisser

"Delicate and dusty on the nose with some sweetness of oak spice. Dry, more chewy than some, the oak showing more in the texture than the flavour, which is all about pure fruit. Long, chalky but supple. Reined back but complete." Jancis Robinson

"Fontodi's 90ha of vineyards are located in the Panzano's Conca d'Oro, one of the driest stretches of the Chianti Classico. Owned by the Manetti family since 1968, the property is totally self-sustaining and has been farmed organically since 1990. Exuberantly youthful, it exhibits plush black cherry, thyme and liquorice alongside a refreshing juiciness, despite the warm vintage. The tannins are quite serious and this could use another year in the bottle." Decanter

"Rich, packed with cherry, leather, dark chocolate and wild herb aromas and flavors. Dense and vibrant, with a long, mouthwatering finish that picks up a graphite edge." Wine Spectator

"The 2015 Chianti Classico is outrageously beautiful. Rich and seductive, the 2015 expresses the radiance of the year while retaining a good bit of translucence and energy. Rose petal, mint, white pepper and crushed flowers add elements of brightness to this classy, super-polished Chianti Classico. More than anything else, though, I am simply blown away by the wine's quality. A decade ago, Giovanni Manetti made darker more concentrated wines. Today, the Fontodi wines speak to finesse. The Chianti Classico is a great place to see that. It was aged in equal parts cask and neutral barrique." Antonio Galloni

"This is a great vintage for Sangiovese, and Fontodi embraces this fact with exuberance and enthusiasm. The 2015 Chianti Classico offers tight and precise fruit characteristics with crisp forest berry, cassis and dried blueberry. The wine is profoundly steady and straight with absolutely no rough edges. This is a lean to mid-weight red with balanced acidity tucked in on the finish." Robert Parker

"The purity of fruit here really makes an impression on you. The nose shines with freshly picked blackcurrants, dark plums, freshly cut herbs, cinnamon, raspberry cheesecake, glazed cherries, orange and lemon rind. The palate is so well-crafted with a silky ball of tannins surrounded by layers of blue and red fruit and enveloping acidity. A long finish. From organically grown grapes." James Suckling

Falstaff

"The 2015 Chianti Classico Filetta di Lamole is an attractive, mid-weight wine. Game, smoke, earthiness and tobacco give the 2015 a distinctly wild flavor profile to play off the wild cherry fruit. A Chianti of understatement and nuance, the 2015 has a lot to recommend it. The warm vintage has filled out this mid-weight Chianti very nicely. As always, though, the Filetta di Lamole is a Chianti built on aromatics and structure more than fruit." Antonio Galloni

"There's a tight grain here, with black cherry and tar flavors backed by stiff tannins. Stays mostly elegant and the finish extends." Wine Spectator

"Fontodi's newest wine comes from his cousin's 7ha holdings in the cool zone of Lamole. The terraced vineyards sit at 600 metres above sea level on sandstone soil. Fermented in cement and aged in French oak casks, the 2015 is still backward on the nose, yet the palate reveals violets, lavender, forest blossoms and raspberry. Underneath it has a decidedly flinty edge with chalky, powdery tannins. This is captivating." Decanter

"A floral Chianti Classico that shows fresh rose petals and stems, tulips and cranberries. The palate combines acidic flair with velvety tannins while remaining composed and vivid." James Suckling

"Sweet red cherries, mint, licorice and spices lift from the glass in the 2012 Pinot Nero Case Via. An attractive, mid-weight wine, the 2012 offers tons of near and medium-term appeal. A bit of rain at the end of August helped creating favorable conditions for the last phase of ripening in what had been up until then a dry, hot year." Antonio Galloni

"The 2015 Syrah Case Via is a rich, boisterous wine endowed with tremendous fruit depth and overall intensity. Black cherry, plum, new leather, spice and menthol build as this extroverted wine gains volume in the glass. Readers can expect a rich, explosive wine with tremendous near and medium term appeal." Antonio Galloni

"Impressive aromas of crushed blackberries and slate with some black peppercorns. Medium body, very fine tannins and a delicious and classy finish. Real syrah, as always. From organically grown grapes." James Suckling

"Syrah is the first red variety to be harvested each year at Fontodi. The 2015 Syrah Case Via opens to an inky dark appearance with purplish and blackish hues. This is a gutsy and savory wine that offers a swift kick of aromatic intensity. Dried blackberry, plum, spice, leather and bitter chocolate peel back in thick layers. Yet, despite the heat of the vintage, you might mistake this wine as being from a cooler growing season. The fruit is tight and focused. The finish offers bright acidity that is not common to Syrah from other parts of the wine world. Those cool Panzano nighttime temperatures and higher altitudes have left their mark here. Give this wine an extra year of bottle aging to allow it to flesh out further. Only 5,500 bottles were produced." Robert Parker

“Vigna del Sorbo” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2014 (BIO)

Weinwisser

"An elegant version, with a keen edge of tannins underlining the pure cherry, blackberry, leather and earth flavors. Turns more polished with air, finishing up with a hint of bitter almond." Wine Spectator

"I tasted the 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo the day before it was to be bottled. The time the wine spent in barrique was shortened slightly to compensate for the delicate quality of fruit produced in this cool vintage. This 2014 edition is aged in barrel for 20 months, compared to 24 months for a warmer vintage such as 2012. The wine’s time in botte grande was extended to four months (instead of the usual one month usually employed) to afford more time for complete integration. The age of the Vigna del Sorbo vines is old enough to protect the plants from extreme temperatures. The vines are comfortably in their production prime. The fruit is balanced and bright with lively cherry and raspberry flavors followed by ethereal tones of crushed mineral, blue flower and balsam herb. Although the wine sports less overall volume, the finish is extremely polished and fine. It should flesh out further over the next year." Robert Parker

"Exotic spice, pipe tobacco, dark-skinned berry, forest floor and a whiff of French oak all come together on this structured red. The elegant, full-bodied palate evokes Marasca cherry, black raspberry, licorice and white pepper while vibrant acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins provide balance. It's still young, with great energy and will benefit from more time in the bottle." Wine Enthusiast

"A powerful, structured wine, the 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo won't be ready to drink for a number of years, much less be at its best. In recent years, the Sorbo has been much more forward, but the 2014 is decidedly austere and ungiving. Graphite, smoke, black cherry, plum and licorice notes infuse the dark, mysterious finish." Antonio Galloni

"Solely owned by Fontodi, Vigna del Sorbo is a 40-year-old parcel within their Panzano property. Until 2012 it included a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, but is now made entirely from Sangiovese. It is aged in equal percentages of new and used barriques. While the 2014 needs time to come around, it won't be the longest-lived vintage, but it's an excellent wine with good cellaring potential. It's smoky and quietly alluring, with hints of balsam, truffle and baking spice. Layered without being lush, it is also sternly tannic." Decanter

“Vigna del Sorbo” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2015 (BIO)

SUPERIORE.DE

"This is concentrated and monolithic, with blackberry and black cherry flavors augmented by tar, tobacco and iron notes. Offers excellent potential, but needs time to absorb the tannins. Powerful, showing fine length." Wine Spectator

"Fontodi's Vigna del Sorbo sits in front of the estate. Southwest facing on galestro soil, the vineyard totals 8ha at an altitude of 450 metres. First produced in 1985, it has been designated as a Gran Selezione since the 2010 vintage. Initially closed, this expands slowly with nuances of red cherry, currants, earth, sage and liquorice coming into clear focus. The palate is well-endowed with compact fruit that has effortlessly absorbed the oak and maintained its integrity. The tannins are vigorous yet harmonious, making for a powerful wine that manages to remain elegantly poised." Decanter

"What a nose of clay, earth, crushed stones, rose petals, red licorice, baking spices, tar and Chinese spices. The level of sophistication to the red-fruited core, laser-sharp acidity and polished tannins, which grip and caress the palate, make this the greatest Chianti Classico ever made by Fontodi. From organically grown grapes. A long, long finish." James Suckling

"The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo (100% Sangiovese) is a wine that inspires a deep, deep breath into your glass. There's so much to take in and admire. So where to start? First, the wine shows a beautiful appearance that is thick and dark but allows for just enough ambient light to make it shine with ruby rays from deep inside. Then you have the bouquet that presents a solid wall of interwoven and ultimately beautifully balanced aromas. There is dark fruit, tobacco, leather, spice and polished river stone. Lastly, the mouthfeel reveals a similar level of extreme flavor equilibrium with very fine but still very young tannins. That mid-weight structure, matched to the wine's natural acidity, is a major guarantee of longevity." Robert Parker

"Another captivating wine in this range, the 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is all class. A rush of dark cherry, plum, sage, lavender and menthol races across the palate. Deep and powerful, yet also remarkably light on its feet, the 2015 has it all. Moreover, the 2015 is one of the most refined Vigna del Sorbos yet. It won't be long before the 2015 is recognized as one of the all-time great Vigna del Sorbos. Proprietor Giovanni Manetti prefers whole berry ferments in order to maintain as much freshness as possible. In recent years, Manetti has reduced punchdowns to just once a day in fermentation. The gentler approach to extraction comes through loud and clear." Antonio Galloni

Falstaff

"Rich and opulent, with a sheen to the black currant and blackberry fruit flavors. Additional notes of thyme, leather, mineral and tar add depth, while the burly tannins still ride roughshod on the finish. Nonetheless, all the components are there and this shows fine length. A more muscular style for this wine, reflecting the vintage." Wine Spectator

"Manetti describes it as an almost perfect vintage: the summer was warmer than usual with lots of sunshine, but it was never too hot and rain fell at the right moments. It's surprisingly open on the nose, where sweet earth, dark cherry, grilled thyme and baking spice aromas unfold. The palate is full and voluptuous, with succulent fruits coated by firm tannins. This just needs time to take shape and it will reveal its more subtle complexities after a few years in the cellar." Decanter

"A powerful, full-bodied red with a silky and minerally character. Hints of smoke and wet earth. Great length and beauty." James Suckling

"I'm hardly surprised to report that Fontodi's 2015 Flaccianello della Pieve is one of the best wines recorded in this report of new releases from Tuscany. This wine sits as tall and as proud as the Colosseum in Rome or the Pyramids of Giza in its undeniable glory and beauty. It would be impossible to exaggerate its many lasting attributes and qualities. Perhaps the most remarkable is the smooth and seamless nature of its many complicated moving parts. It produces abundant power, intensity and elegance as if this were the easiest accomplishment in the world. But we all know that's far from the truth. Despite the heat of the vintage, this wine is constructed with firm building blocks as if it were from a cooler year. That's the Panzano magic in a nutshell. This vintage is very young and tight, and you need to exercise patience to allow it enough time to evolve." Robert Parker

"The 2015 Flaccianello della Pieve is truly remarkable. An exotic mélange of black cherry jam, chocolate, grilled herbs and spice melds together in a huge, beautifully layered wine of exceptional class and pedigree. The 2015 manages to be dense and rich, but never overdone. The 2015 spent 20 months in French oak, 80%, followed by 6 months in cask. It is the final phase of aging in large wood that seems to help integrating the smaller oak influence. The 2015 is shaping up to be a modern-day icon. There's not much more to it than that." Fontodi

Gambero Rosso

"The big news in Chianti Classico these past few months is that Fontodi's Giovanni Manetti has been elected as the new president of the Consorzio Chianti Classico. He takes the reins from Sergio Zingarelli who was president for two very successful mandates that included the introduction of the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione category. I am very happy to hear of this change, mostly because I firmly believe that Giovanni's genteel and non-confrontational personality will allow for a moment of reflection and unity in a growers' association that has seen its share of controversy and infighting over the years. A mandate of tranquility would be the least we should expect of this new presidency. The most we can expect, however, is a stronger voice from growers over mapping and the delineation of subzones within the greater appellation, something I have been advocating. Giovanni Manetti and Fontodi represent the pinnacle of quality that can be achieved in this part of Tuscany. That he has become a symbolic head of the region only brings more prestige and pedigree to an appellation that demands our highest respect and admiration." Robert Parker (2018)
