Very appetising Sauvignon Blanc from Tuscany. Pale straw yellow, beautiful fragrance with aromas of light berries, pear and honey. Round, harmonious and fresh taste, long and aromatic. SUPERIORE.DE

"Fontodi's Meriggio is absolutely beautiful in 2019. Sauvignon aromatics lead into notes of apricot, mint, chamomile and wild flowers. Drink this vibrant, polished Sauvignon/Trebbiano blend over the next 2-3 years." Vinous

    • "Filetta di Lamole" Chianti Classico DOCG 2017 (BIO)

“Filetta di Lamole” Chianti Classico DOCG 2017 (BIO)

Filetta di Lamole comes from selected Lamole sites of the Giovanni Manettis family and was first vinified in 2015. It is a complex, elegant Chianti Classico, which plays off its aromas with nuances and has a fascinating structure. Ruby red with bright reflections. Complex bouquet of cherry, then some tarry notes, violets and forest flowers. In this wine you can see Fontodi's signature, and yet it is different because it is more subtle and restrained with its existing powers. A wonderful new addition to the Fontodi portfolio, which underlines all the more the class and versatility of the winery. SUPERIORE.DE

"Mid ruby. Soft sour-cherry nose with minerally hints. Gripping cherry fruit that is finely balanced. Great length and style." Jancis Robinson

"Earthy aromas of truffle, camphor and blue flower mingle with whiffs of new leather. Smooth and supple, the rounded, savory palate offers fleshy black cherry, baking spice and smooth, polished tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"Sitting at 600 metres above sea level and surrounded by forest, Fontodi's vineyards in the area of Lamole are much cooler than the estate's holdings in Panzano. Even in 2017, harvest didn't begin until October. It emerges from it shell slowly then offers an exquisite bouquet of fresh flowers and herbs. There is great focus here and an invigorating backbone of acidity piercing through dark currants. At the moment, tannins are still firm and imposing. Give this another year in the bottle." Decanter

"The 2017 Chianti Classico Filetta di Lamole is absolutely gorgeous. In 2017, the Filetta di Lamole has a bit more body than usual because of the warmth of the year, and yet it retains its classic sense of energy and mid-weight structure. Crushed red berry, spice, mint, licorice and rose petal all open up in this super-expressive, inviting Chianti Classico." Vinous

"Chewy and rich with attractive cherry and dried-strawberry character, as well as intense tannins. Dried flowers, too. This is traditional and structured. Very tight. Needs time to soften." James Suckling

    • Chianti Classico DOCG 2018 (BIO)

      Chianti Classico DOCG 2018 (BIO)

Chianti Classico by Giovanni Manetti offers a deep, densely woven and yet still very youthful bouquet of dark and red berries and fine spicy notes. The dry, cherry flavour with long-lasting impressions, well extracted tannin and the Sangiovese-typical acidity show clearly recognisable terroir character. Very clear, straightforward, long, always fresh and juicy, with excellent power and balance. SUPERIORE.DE

"Lustrous mid to deep ruby. Gorgeous ripe cherry fruit with top notes of dark spice. Succulent and pure and with long finely chiselled tannins. Great aromatic build-up on the finish." Jancis Robinson

"Fontodi's 2018 is one of the vintage's denser annata. Besides lower rainfall in the area of Panzano, owner Giovanni Manetti also points to a sudden drop in nighttime temperatures just before the harvest - close to 0°C - which dried the grapes slightly, giving extra concentration. A deeply coloured, dark fruited, full-bodied Chianti Classico with polished oak nuances, it offers up aromas of leather, tobacco, black plum and spice. It flexes its muscles on the palate with layers of ripe tannins but allows space for the pure blackcurrant to ring out. You could forget about this in the cellar for a couple of years." Decanter

Ruby red, the Pinot Nero Case Via exudes a typical bouquet of wild berries and pipe tobacco, which blends harmoniously with the barrel spice. The soft, characterful taste is based on the power of the tannins and an excellent aroma structure. SUPERIORE.DE

"This fragrant red opens with aromas of violet, rose, woodland berry, tilled earth and a whiff of new leather. The polished, fruity palate delivers juicy morello cherry, red raspberry, white pepper, and mineral alongside refined tannins and bright acidity. A licorice note wraps around the lingering finish." Strong ruby red. Pinot Nero Case Via exudes a varietal bouquet of wild berries and pipe tobacco, which combines harmoniously with the barrel spice. The soft, characterful taste is based on the strength of the tannin and the excellent aroma structure of the Pinot Pinot Noir. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright ruby red. In the nose very spicy of undergrowth, pepper, also clearly of leather, in the reverberation fumé and of cherries. On the palate then clear and very juicy, spreads out with a spicy touch, shows itself powerful and open, lively." Falstaff

"A pretty pinot with dried-strawberry and raspberry character and hints of smoked wood and meat. Medium to full body and firm, lightly chewy tannins. From organically grown grapes. Needs time to soften." James Suckling

"The 2017 Pinot Nero Case Via is pliant and expressive. Sweet red berry, blood orange, flowers and earthy tones flesh out in the glass. As always, the Fontodi Pinot is first and foremost a wine of Chianti Classico, especially in its acid profile and overall structural feel." Vinous

"Aromas of scorched soil, leather, rusty iron and dried botanical herb form the nose. Made with organically farmed Pinot Nero, the velvety, enveloping palate offers red berry, rhubarb, white pepper and rusty nail alongside fine-grained tannins." Wine Enthusiast

“Case Via” Syrah IGT 2017 (BIO)

Strong dark ruby. Pepper and spice accents, aromas of ripe red and dark fruits and a slightly animal note characterise the precise aroma. The perfect balance between tannin, silky elements and the acidity guarantee a characterful and pithy taste. SUPERIORE.DE

"Deep dark ruby violet. Exuberant nose with rich notes of elderberry and blueberry, some green pepper in the background. Firm and gripping on the palate, spreads out richly, dense tannin, lots of spice, subtle coconut notes on the final." Falstaff

"The 2017 Syrah Case Via is dark, ample and enveloping. Blackberry, chocolate, leather, licorice and spice infuse the 2017 with striking intensity to match its plush, textured feel. The Fontodi Syrah is done in a style that emphasizes fruit and overall richness more than savoriness or minerality." Vinous

"This is a fascinating expression of Syrah that does not fit into our preconceived expectations of the grape, whether from the Old World or the New. The Fontodi 2017 Syrah Case Via opens to a rich, inky dark appearance. I got a sweet note of butterscotch or caramel at the start, but that subsided quickly to make room for black fruit, toasted wood, campfire ash and ripe plum. The wine is not exactly varietally pure, especially if you identify with the toasty Shiraz camp of Australia or the meaty, white peppercorn camp of the Rhône. Instead, this wine has a vaguely carbonic level of energy, zest and ripe primary fruit. The fruit is dark, bold, rich and Tuscan, with a direct and sunny personality." Robert Parker

"A rich, intense syrah with aromas and flavors of green tobacco, dried meat and rich fruit. It's full-bodied, yet tight and polished. Delicious at the end. Serious." James Suckling

Chianti Classico DOCG 2017 (BIO) · MAGNUM in OWC

Chianti Classico by Giovanni Manetti offers a deep, densely woven and yet very youthful bouquet of dark and red berries and fine spicy notes. The dry, cherry-like taste with long-lasting impressions, well extracted tannin and the Sangiovese typical acidity shows clearly recognizable terroir character. Very clear, straightforward, long, always fresh and juicy, with excellent strength and balance. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, deep ruby. Intense and dense nose, initially reveals notes of cloves and black truffle, then plenty of blackberry and black cherry. Hearty and grasping on the palate, shows a lot of power, opens with handy, hearty tannin, full pressure, needs some more maturity." Falstaff

"Lustrous mid crimson. Gorgeous lifted nose of sour cherry with a hint of nutmeg. Succulent and almost a little tart on the palate with a layer of powdery tannins. Amazingly fresh for this hot vintage. I presume part of the fruit was harvested very early in order to maintain the acidity." Jancis Robinson

"The Fontodi 2017 Chianti Classico gives the impression of being slightly mature or advanced, even now straight out of the gate. The hot and dry vintage has shaped aromas of candied cherry, dried plum, rum raisin, white chocolate and a dusty note of wet chalk. The wine is quite beautiful in terms of mouthfeel, with well-integrated alcohol and tannins that close without sharpness or astringency. This dark and sultry Sangiovese shows moderate fruit, focused mostly on dark blackberry and dried cherry." Robert Parker

"Ripe black cherry, blackberry, iron, juniper and thyme flavors mark this solidly built red. The balance walks the line between the rich profile and the assertive tannins that deliver grip on the long finish." Wine Spectator

"April's frost resulted in less productive vines. Giovanni Manetti saw this as an advantage in the drought-like conditions of summer. He explains that with fewer grapes, the vines suffered less stress and were able to continue ripening without shutting down. Initial scents of baked clay and dry earth make way for mint blossom and cherry. Clingy, muscular tannins wrap around dusty fruit with nuances of rust and cinnamon poking through and the acidity is remarkably racy and ripe." Decanter

"A rich, layered Chianti Classico with intense cherry and flower character, as well as orange peel. Full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins and a flavorful finish." James Suckling

"The 2017 Chianti Classico Fontodi is a wine of extreme elegance that shows how much the house style has evolved here. A decade ago, in a warm year the Fontodi Chianti Classico would have been opulent, but these days proprietor Giovanni Manetti seeks finesse more than power, and that is exactly what comes through here. Ripe red Sangiovese fruit, rose petal, blood orange and spice infuse this racy, exotic Chianti Classico with so much character. The 2017 spent two years in oak, half in cask and half in neutral oak. I loved it." Vinous

"Fragrant and delicious, this opens with aromas of ripe black-skinned fruit, blue flower, leather, underbrush and a whiff of French oak. The full-bodied, enveloping palate delivers baked plum, Marasca cherry, licorice and a note of espresso framed in fine-grained enveloping tannins that give it a smooth texture and a weightless finesse." • "Vigna del Sorbo" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017 (BIO)

“Vigna del Sorbo” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017 (BIO)

Vigna del Sorbo pleases at first sight with its full, strong ruby red. It takes over the nose with a clear, intense fruitiness, to which herbaceous notes add, before the wide, consistent flavour and the straightforward, flawless final set in. An excellent harmony between structure and elegance and for years one of the greatest Gran Selezione in Chianti Classico. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, deep ruby. Rich and fleshy nose, smells of blackberry and ripe plum, some cinnamon in the background. Meaty and gripping also on the palate, lots of dark berry fruit, opens with present, dense tannin." Falstaff

"The Fontodi 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is expressive, dark and thickly concentrated. I received my samples early and found that this wine was a little shy or slow to open in this early phase. If given extra time, the bouquet warms up to dark fruit, plum, rum cake and dried violet. I came back to the wine about two hours later and discovered a pretty note of crushed aspirin or carbon, with more crushed flower. The oak adds sweet spice and scorched earth, but these too will integrate with time." Robert Parker

"Powerful, tight red with currant and plum character. Hints of new wood and bark. Full-bodied with dark berries and hints of dark chocolate, as well as other dark fruit. Flavorful finish. Solid. Needs time to open." James Suckling

"The summer was dry and warm without extreme heat and leading up to harvest, the nights cooled down substantially. His Vigna del Sorbo is one of the top wines among a robust set of stellar offerings from this outstanding vintage. It is remarkable for the freshness and purity that rises above the concentration and density. A mix of smoke, liquorice , black cherry and thyme emerges slowly. Even in their commanding grip, the tannins are perfectly polished and sophisticated. Full, packed with fruit but with incredible agility and lip-smacking tanginess, this lingers with fragrant earth, tobacco and crushed stone. For the long-haul." Decanter

"The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is a dense, packed wine. It is also surprisingly, almost shockingly backward. That is probably a good thing for its long-term aging prospects. Readers hoping to get an early glimpse into the 2017 before it shuts down may have a hard time doing that, as today acids and tannin dominate. I expect the 2017 will be stellar in another 4-5 years." • "Flaccianello della Pieve" Toscana IGT 2017 (BIO)

“Flaccianello della Pieve” Toscana IGT 2017 (BIO)

Giovanni Manetti's Flaccianello, like Paolo de Marchi's Cepparello, is the archetype of Tuscany. Here, 100% Sangiovese masterfully reflects the perfect identity of central Tuscany. Flaccianello 2017 is characterised by monumental depth and harmony. On the nose, violets, small red berries and earthy tones. Firm, demanding and taut on the palate with an irrepressible power that is ideally tamed by a formidable acid structure and its fresh elegance. A great wine and once again a benchmark. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, deep dark ruby. Compact, concentrated nose, shows notes of black truffle, blackberry, some black cherry, plus fine balsamic tones. Powerful and gripping on the palate, showing grippy tannin in many layers, coated with lots of sweet melting, rich and long, a rough diamond that still needs to be polished by time." Falstaff

"A selection of the best grapes from Fontodi's highest altitude parcels in Panzano's Conca d'Oro. Manetti maintains that the spring frost helped lighten the vines' load, allowing the remaining grapes to continue ripening even during torrid conditions. Macerated cherry and blackberry compote are nuanced by dried thyme and grilled fennel. New wood adds hints of vanilla and spice box. The palate is robust and firm, though the tannins are refined and tangy acidity brightens the whole. An excellent showing from this challenging year. Needs time." Decanter

"Very high-toned and muscular red with crushed cherries, blackberries and walnuts. Some dried earth. It's full-bodied and chewy with solid tannins that form the wine. Beautiful ripe fruit in the center palate. Needs time to soften." James Suckling

"There's fine purity to the black cherry, black currant and blackberry flavors in this expressive red, with refined tannins. Everything is in the right proportion as this remains vibrant and focused, with iron and oak spice accents adding depth as this builds to a lingering aftertaste." Wine Spectator

"The Fontodi 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is a standout wine of the dry vintage. This pure Sangiovese opens to a dark garnet color with more visible concentration and density compared to recent past editions. This is a beautiful wine with pliant tannins, dark fruit richness, balanced acidity and a fruit-forward 15% alcohol content. The wine is big and bold when weighed on the Flaccianello scale (and even more so when weighed on the Sangiovese scale) with dark cherry, plum, spice, violet, chalk and campfire ash. Despite that power and inner opulence, this wine adds that zesty Sangiovese character with fresh acidity and an energized approach. This Flaccianello is whole and complete with the natural firmness and structure to hold it steady during the aging process. A small part of amphorae-aged fruit is added to the blend." Robert Parker

"The 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is fabulous. Dark, sensual and enveloping, the 2017 captures the essence of the house style in its textural richness and baritone inflections. Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and chocolate infuse the 2017 with tremendous richness. The 2017 spent 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cask, the same aging regime as the Vigna del Sorbo, but with a bit more new oak. That approach worked very well, as the Flaccianello stands out for its exceptional textural elegance and finesse. It is a positively stellar wine." Vinous

    • "Vigna del Sorbo" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017 (BIO) <br>MAGNUM in OWC

“Vigna del Sorbo” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017 (BIO) · MAGNUM in OWC

I expect the 2017 will be stellar in another 4-5 years." About the winemakersfontodiTuscany | Chianti
    fontodi

What do the dome of Florence Cathedral and some of Tuscany's best red wines have in common? The Manetti family. Even today, the Manetti family is still a leader in the production of terracotta. While the older brother Marco is taking care of this old tradition, Giovanni Manetti has brought the Fontodi winery to new splendour. Already at the age of 16 he started to help out and planted his first vines in the legendary vineyards below Panzano.

The most famous street in Tuscany is the Chiantigiana, which connects Florence with Siena. Around 70 kilometres of bends, mostly through vineyards. Approximately in the middle of the route is Panzano. High up on the crest of a huge, south-facing hollow in the landscape, which looks like an oversized clam full of vines. The inhabitants call it "Conca d'Oro", the golden shell. However, this comes from the time when wheat was still cultivated here, because the ripe wheat in the glow of the afternoon sun made the whole natural amphitheatre shine golden. Today it is a rich green of the vines that only shines gold in late autumn when the leaves of Sangiovese change colour. The best view is when you come from the south and drive up the serpentines. Exactly where every wine lover stops to take his photo of Panzano, the entrance to the Fontodi winery branches off to the right on a hill with a magnificent all-round view.

An impressive location, for the Chianti-Classico area quite high ascending and relatively steep, up to almost 500 m above sea level. One of the best locations for Sangiovese at all, not only means Giovanni Manetti. Sangiovese needs a lot of sunlight during the day, good ventilation and cool nights in order to become elegant. This is perfectly given here. In addition there is a soil from Galestro, as the limestone marl is called here. The soil is covered with ancient, brittle slate, which, however, deeply roots the vines and makes the wines mineral. It is not for nothing that Fontodi's flagship wine, the Flaccianello, is always distinguished as one of the very best pure Sangiovese wines in Italy.

Giovanni Manetti could also be a diplomat. His charming, open manner has made it possible to create a model project in Italian viticulture: "Panzano sostenibile" - sustainable Panzano, because if you cultivate biodynamically, it makes sense for your neighbours to do the same," Manetti smiles and puts his light under the bushel. Anyone who knows Italy knows how difficult it is to persuade several entrepreneurs to take joint action. Today practically all wineries with more than 500 ha around Panzano are organic or in conversion. This was probably one of the reasons why Giovanni Manetti was elected president of the Consorzio Chianti Classico, which is why in recent years there has been a clear trend towards organic cultivation in the entire Chianti region.

In addition to the extensive work in the vineyards, which now occupy 80 hectares of the 130 hectares of land, Manetti built a new cellar, which, on three floors underground, allows the grapes to be processed on a natural gradient without pumps. State-of-the-art equipment, from steel and wooden fermenting stands to various sizes of wooden barrels, is a matter of course in order to allow each variety and each layer to mature specifically. Some of these are terracotta amphorae from his brother's production. These are still rather experiments in small quantities, but the quality already makes many critics curious, one can be curious. The quality fanatic also leaves nothing to chance when it comes to oenological care, because none other than Franco Bernabei has been a partner for many years and is now supported by his son Marco.

In addition to Chianti Classico, Vigna del Sorbo, the Gran Selezione des Chianti from the single vineyard and the Flaccianello della Pieve, the three top wines from Sangiovese, which have already achieved up to 100 Parker points, the Syrah Case Via with its fine flavoring is always a real eye-catcher. The Pinot Nero of the same name is probably also one of the highest rated in the region and the Sauvignon blanc Meriggio is a fine white counterpart if you want fish instead of Bistecca.  SUPERIORE.DE

"The big news in Chianti Classico these past few months is that Fontodi's Giovanni Manetti has been elected as the new president of the Consorzio Chianti Classico. He takes the reins from Sergio Zingarelli who was president for two very successful mandates that included the introduction of the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione category. I am very happy to hear of this change, mostly because I firmly believe that Giovanni's genteel and non-confrontational personality will allow for a moment of reflection and unity in a growers' association that has seen its share of controversy and infighting over the years. A mandate of tranquility would be the least we should expect of this new presidency. The most we can expect, however, is a stronger voice from growers over mapping and the delineation of subzones within the greater appellation, something I have been advocating. Giovanni Manetti and Fontodi represent the pinnacle of quality that can be achieved in this part of Tuscany. That he has become a symbolic head of the region only brings more prestige and pedigree to an appellation that demands our highest respect and admiration." Robert Parker (2018)
