“Meriggio” Bianco di Toscana Centrale IGT 2017 (BIO)

Very appetizing Sauvignon Blanc from Tuscany. Bright straw yellow, beautiful scent with aromas of light berries, pear and honey. Round, harmonious taste, long and complex. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2017 Meriggio is a pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc from the heart of the Panzano in Chianti growing area. This is a fresh and luminous wine with a pretty bouquet of citrus, white peach and honeydew melon." Robert Parker

"The 2017 Meriggio (Sauvignon Blanc) is intriguing. Aging a portion of the wine in amphora gives the 2017 added structure and minerality, both of which are remarkable given the warm, arid conditions of the year. Translucent and energetic, the 2017 has a lot going on" Antonio Galloni

Very appetizing Sauvignon Blanc from Tuscany. Bright straw yellow, beautiful fragrance with aromas of light berries, pear and honey. Round, harmonious and fresh taste, long and aromatic. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2018 Meriggio is a very pretty white from Fontodi. In this vintage, Giovanni Manetti added 10% Trebbiano and also aged 1/3rd of the wine in terra cotta, both of which help retain a touch of freshness that is quite welcome. The combination of Panzano richness that comes so naturally, with the aromatics of Sauvignon and the energy of Trebbiano make for a compelling, super-expressive white." Vinous

    • "Filetta di Lamole" Chianti Classico DOCG 2015 (BIO)

“Filetta di Lamole” Chianti Classico DOCG 2015 (BIO)

Ruby red with bright reflections. Filetta di Lamole comes from selected Lamole vineyards of the Giovanni Manettis family and was vinified for the first time in 2015. A multi-layered, elegant Chianti Classico, which plays out its aromas nuanced and shows a fascinating structure. Cherry, slightly tarry notes, violets and forest blossoms: in this wine one recognizes the handwriting of Fontodi, and yet it is different because it is more subtle and restrained with its existing powers. A wonderful new addition to the Fontodi portfolio, which underlines the class of the winery even more. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant ruby with a slight garnet glow. Opened with slightly smoky, spicy notes of tobacco and beetroot, with blackberry in the background. On the palate much finely meshed tannin, spans a wide arch, salty and earthy in the finish, very long." Falstaff

"The 2015 Chianti Classico Filetta di Lamole is an attractive, mid-weight wine. Game, smoke, earthiness and tobacco give the 2015 a distinctly wild flavor profile to play off the wild cherry fruit. A Chianti of understatement and nuance, the 2015 has a lot to recommend it. The warm vintage has filled out this mid-weight Chianti very nicely. As always, though, the Filetta di Lamole is a Chianti built on aromatics and structure more than fruit." Antonio Galloni

"There's a tight grain here, with black cherry and tar flavors backed by stiff tannins. Stays mostly elegant and the finish extends." Wine Spectator

"Fontodi's newest wine comes from his cousin's 7ha holdings in the cool zone of Lamole. The terraced vineyards sit at 600 metres above sea level on sandstone soil. Fermented in cement and aged in French oak casks, the 2015 is still backward on the nose, yet the palate reveals violets, lavender, forest blossoms and raspberry. Underneath it has a decidedly flinty edge with chalky, powdery tannins. This is captivating." Decanter

"A floral Chianti Classico that shows fresh rose petals and stems, tulips and cranberries. The palate combines acidic flair with velvety tannins while remaining composed and vivid." James Suckling

In this wine one recognizes the handwriting of Fontodi, and yet it is different because it is more subtle and restrained with its existing powers. A wonderful new addition to the Fontodi portfolio that underlines the class and versatility of the estate. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant ruby with a light garnet edge. Open, inviting nose with ripe fruit, plum and cherry, violet. Ground and fine in consistency and flow, much fine-meshed tannin, clear cherry fruit." Falstaff

"Concentrated mid ruby. Oatmeal and minerally notes on the nose. With aeration a little perfumed. Impressive concentration of embryonic fruit on the palate. Gorgeous balance and with bags of tasty tannins on the finish." Jancis Robinson

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Filetta di Lamole is terrific. In this vintage, Filetta di Lamole is especially deep, certainly moreso than the first two vintages. At the same time, the 2016 shows all the signatures that are typical of this cool-climate site, with plenty of game, sage, licorice, menthol and spice overtones that add character to a core of dark blue/purplish berry fruit." Vinous

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Filetta di Lamole is a beautifully intense and direct expression that delivers a full bouquet of rich primary fruit with direct confidence and extreme precision. The wine is tight and streamlined with cooling fruit flavors of wild berry, cassis and sour cherry backed by linear mineral notes of crushed stone and flint. It is lightweight in terms of consistency with a fine and elegant close. Filetta di Lamole shows a slightly wild or untamed character within the greater Fontodi house style. The fruit comes from the cool-climate, high-altitude Lamole subregion (with vines planted at 600 meters above sea level), and this explains the wine's fragile and finely knit approach." Robert Parker

"The 2016 growing season was cooler than 2015, resulting in a long, slow ripening and a later harvest. After finishing picking the Fontodi vineyards, Giovanni Manetti harvested this higher altitude plot in Lamole between 14 and 16 October. Earthy rather than fruit-driven, this wine gradually reveals cranberry bush, wild red currants and rosepetal aromas. While the frame is lean, the fine, chalky tannins build to support the sinewy fruit. A more angular expression than Fontodi but really should be appreciated in its own right." Decanter

"A touch of new oak lends spice notes to the mix of cherry, berry, tobacco and wild herb flavors. Densely wrought, with the tannins leaving a resonant tactile sensation as this plays out on the long finish. Balanced, but will need a little time to soften and harmonize." Wine Spectator

"I love the freshness to this red that shows citrus, violets, fresh herbs and lavender. Driven and very tangy with angular, cutthroat acidity and a zippy finish. Delicious and an amazing food wine." James Suckling

"Sweet red cherries, mint, licorice and spices lift from the glass in the 2012 Pinot Nero Case Via. An attractive, mid-weight wine, the 2012 offers tons of near and medium-term appeal. A bit of rain at the end of August helped creating favorable conditions for the last phase of ripening in what had been up until then a dry, hot year." Antonio Galloni

"A rich, dark ruby with a violet shimmer. Smells of soot and black pepper, then some blueberry, spice is in the foreground. Firm and gripping on the palate, much hearty, present tannin, pithy." Falstaff

"The 2015 Syrah Case Via is a rich, boisterous wine endowed with tremendous fruit depth and overall intensity. Black cherry, plum, new leather, spice and menthol build as this extroverted wine gains volume in the glass. Readers can expect a rich, explosive wine with tremendous near and medium term appeal." Antonio Galloni

"Impressive aromas of crushed blackberries and slate with some black peppercorns. Medium body, very fine tannins and a delicious and classy finish. Real syrah, as always. From organically grown grapes." James Suckling

"Syrah is the first red variety to be harvested each year at Fontodi. The 2015 Syrah Case Via opens to an inky dark appearance with purplish and blackish hues. This is a gutsy and savory wine that offers a swift kick of aromatic intensity. Dried blackberry, plum, spice, leather and bitter chocolate peel back in thick layers. Yet, despite the heat of the vintage, you might mistake this wine as being from a cooler growing season. The fruit is tight and focused. The finish offers bright acidity that is not common to Syrah from other parts of the wine world. Those cool Panzano nighttime temperatures and higher altitudes have left their mark here. Give this wine an extra year of bottle aging to allow it to flesh out further. Only 5,500 bottles were produced." Robert Parker

Deep ruby red. Pinot Nero Case Via exudes a typical bouquet of wild berries and pipe tobacco, which blends harmoniously with the barrel seasoning. The soft, characterful taste is based on the power of the tannins and the excellent aroma structure of the Pinot Noir. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2016 Pinot Nero Case Via is a very special expression of the grape that shows darkness and increased concentration in this beautiful vintage. This wine offers a purely Tuscan take on Pinot Nero. It pours from the bottle with a dark garnet color, showing aromas of dried cherry, smoke, tar and road paving. The wine closes with a broad, mid-weight approach. This would be a nice bottle to open for a game dinner with roasted pheasant." Robert Parker

"The 2016 Pinot Nero Case Via is fabulous. In fact, the 2016 may very well be the finest edition of Fontodi's Pinot I have ever tasted. A wine of tremendous aromatic intensity, inner sweetness and delineation, the 2016 Pinot simply has it all. Of course, the highly favorable growing season adds quite a bit of pedigree as well. The Fontodi Pinot is not especially varietal, but it is off the charts beautiful and absolutely compelling. What a wine!" Vinous

The Fontodi Syrah is not especially varietal, but it is flat-out gorgeous if taken on its own terms. Today, the Syrah is one of the most backward wines in the range. It clearly needs time for the aromatics to develop, and yet there is so much to look forward to." Vinous

An excellent harmony between structure and elegance and already today one of the largest Gran Selezione of the Tuscan top vintage 2016. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sangiovese, matured 24 months in wood: sensual bouquet of black cherries, dried roses and leather; the base powerful, the tannins finely meshed, in balance with the acidity, ends long on notes of berries and pepper. To a saddle of venison with mushrooms." Vinum

"Light oak notes wrap around a core of black cherry, black currant, iron and earth flavors in this intense red. Firm and balanced, with a fresh, mineral- and tobacco-tinged finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is a wine of tremendous aromatic intensity, freshness and nuance. Sweet floral and spice notes meld into a core of blue/purplish fruit, lavender, licorice and leather, with veins of bright acids that perk things up nicely. Readers need to be patient with the 2016, as it is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. But I have seen this before with Vigna del Sorbo. Sometimes the more reticent vintages turn out the be the most complete and thrilling wines with cellaring. I imagine that will be the case here as well." Vinous

"This is always an entrancing Gran Selezione and the 2016 shows dried raspberries, boysenberries, vanilla and brambleberries. Full-bodied and tightly wound with eye-catching minerality. The acidity sharpens out the exuberant red fruit perfectly. Incredible length and drinkability. Is this better even than the great 2015? I think so." James Suckling

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is another benchmark wine from Tuscany that shows the incredible potential of this iconic vintage. This beautiful single-vineyard Sangiovese reveals a graceful side with dark fruit intensity, cherry, plum, fresh violets and tilled earth. Tar, tobacco and licorice appear as delicate background tones, giving more volume and texture to the wine's sensorial impact. Vigna del Sorbo shows its own precise identity that is fiercely faithful to Sangiovese, but that also pushes the boundaries to go beyond our highest expectations of the grape in terms of color, concentration, aromatic complexity and staying power. That's the Panzano magic in a nutshell." Robert Parker

    • "Flaccianello della Pieve" Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO)

“Flaccianello della Pieve” Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO)

Dark ruby red. In the compact fragrance dark berries, smoke, liquorice, tar and graphite. This opulence continues on the palate with mountains of juicy, ripe fruit and dense tannin. Fantastic Sangiovese elegance with high maturity and cult potential! SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark cherries, blackcurrants, brambleberries, eucalyptus, vanilla, tar, sandalwood and dried violets are the calling cards on the nose. This is certainly a very refined and delicate Flaccianello, that weaves its way through fresh dark fruit and layers of intricately wrought tannins. Delicious now, but better in 2022." James Suckling

"Ripe, with mulberry, plum, black cherry, mineral and spice flavors, this red is both lush and firmly structured. Complex, well-defined and persistent, courtesy of the racy acidity. Though balanced, this needs a few years to really knit together." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Flaccianello della Pieve is off the charts. Fresh, vibrant and explosive, with tremendous overall intensity, the 2016 possesses magnificent richness, with sumptuous fruit purity and simply unreal balance. Creamy, silky tannins add to the wine's sophistication and overall polish. The 2016 is dark, inky and powerful, but not at all heavy. Giovanni Manetti gave the 2016 18 months in French oak (75-80% new), followed by 6 months in cask. This is the first vintage in which a small amount (2%) of the wine was aged in amphora. In a word: stunning! Don't miss it." Vinous

"Fontodi's 2016 Flaccianello della Pieve is a masterpiece. This review represents a composite of notes from two separate tasting sessions, one at the winery and a second bottle tasted repeatedly over the course of 24 hours at my own pace. In the case of the second sample, it ended up in a blind flight next to the 2016 Masseto, and as beautiful as that Merlot-based wine is, this wine paints an even more beautiful portrait of a perfect Tuscan landscape, thanks to that tangy Sangiovese typicity. This vintage shows amazing depth and poise, with a sheer sense of elegance that comes from the undisputed quality of fruit achieved in this balanced vintage. The bouquet opens to dark cherry, blue flower and tilled earth. The tannins are taut, almost crunchy, and the wine offers profound pedigree and persistence that is driven by the evident acidity. That depth is what stands out most. This 2016 vintage includes a small part from clay amphorae for the first time. This slight change in the relationship of wine to barrel size has resulted in a more elegant and finessed wine." Robert Parker

    fontodi

What do the dome of Florence Cathedral and some of Tuscany's best red wines have in common? The Manetti family. Even today, the Manetti family is still a leader in the production of terracotta. While the older brother Marco is taking care of this old tradition, Giovanni Manetti has brought the Fontodi winery to new splendour. Already at the age of 16 he started to help out and planted his first vines in the legendary vineyards below Panzano.

The most famous street in Tuscany is the Chiantigiana, which connects Florence with Siena. Around 70 kilometres of bends, mostly through vineyards. Approximately in the middle of the route is Panzano. High up on the crest of a huge, south-facing hollow in the landscape, which looks like an oversized clam full of vines. The inhabitants call it "Conca d'Oro", the golden shell. However, this comes from the time when wheat was still cultivated here, because the ripe wheat in the glow of the afternoon sun made the whole natural amphitheatre shine golden. Today it is a rich green of the vines that only shines gold in late autumn when the leaves of Sangiovese change colour. The best view is when you come from the south and drive up the serpentines. Exactly where every wine lover stops to take his photo of Panzano, the entrance to the Fontodi winery branches off to the right on a hill with a magnificent all-round view.

An impressive location, for the Chianti-Classico area quite high ascending and relatively steep, up to almost 500 m above sea level. One of the best locations for Sangiovese at all, not only means Giovanni Manetti. Sangiovese needs a lot of sunlight during the day, good ventilation and cool nights in order to become elegant. This is perfectly given here. In addition there is a soil from Galestro, as the limestone marl is called here. The soil is covered with ancient, brittle slate, which, however, deeply roots the vines and makes the wines mineral. It is not for nothing that Fontodi's flagship wine, the Flaccianello, is always distinguished as one of the very best pure Sangiovese wines in Italy.

Giovanni Manetti could also be a diplomat. His charming, open manner has made it possible to create a model project in Italian viticulture: "Panzano sostenibile" - sustainable Panzano, because if you cultivate biodynamically, it makes sense for your neighbours to do the same," Manetti smiles and puts his light under the bushel. Anyone who knows Italy knows how difficult it is to persuade several entrepreneurs to take joint action. Today practically all wineries with more than 500 ha around Panzano are organic or in conversion. This was probably one of the reasons why Giovanni Manetti was elected president of the Consorzio Chianti Classico, which is why in recent years there has been a clear trend towards organic cultivation in the entire Chianti region.

In addition to the extensive work in the vineyards, which now occupy 80 hectares of the 130 hectares of land, Manetti built a new cellar, which, on three floors underground, allows the grapes to be processed on a natural gradient without pumps. State-of-the-art equipment, from steel and wooden fermenting stands to various sizes of wooden barrels, is a matter of course in order to allow each variety and each layer to mature specifically. Some of these are terracotta amphorae from his brother's production. These are still rather experiments in small quantities, but the quality already makes many critics curious, one can be curious. The quality fanatic also leaves nothing to chance when it comes to oenological care, because none other than Franco Bernabei has been a partner for many years and is now supported by his son Marco.

In addition to Chianti Classico, Vigna del Sorbo, the Gran Selezione des Chianti from the single vineyard and the Flaccianello della Pieve, the three top wines from Sangiovese, which have already achieved up to 100 Parker points, the Syrah Case Via with its fine flavoring is always a real eye-catcher. The Pinot Nero of the same name is probably also one of the highest rated in the region and the Sauvignon blanc Meriggio is a fine white counterpart if you want fish instead of Bistecca.  SUPERIORE.DE

"The big news in Chianti Classico these past few months is that Fontodi's Giovanni Manetti has been elected as the new president of the Consorzio Chianti Classico. He takes the reins from Sergio Zingarelli who was president for two very successful mandates that included the introduction of the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione category. I am very happy to hear of this change, mostly because I firmly believe that Giovanni's genteel and non-confrontational personality will allow for a moment of reflection and unity in a growers' association that has seen its share of controversy and infighting over the years. A mandate of tranquility would be the least we should expect of this new presidency. The most we can expect, however, is a stronger voice from growers over mapping and the delineation of subzones within the greater appellation, something I have been advocating. Giovanni Manetti and Fontodi represent the pinnacle of quality that can be achieved in this part of Tuscany. That he has become a symbolic head of the region only brings more prestige and pedigree to an appellation that demands our highest respect and admiration." Robert Parker (2018)
