"Don't worry about the cost of this wine, although it was expensive: its quality will make up for it."

Opened with classic aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and fine violet. Warm and full on the palate, firm core of dark sweet fruits, smooth tannins, rich and with elegant acidity. Spicy and long, with an unmistakable appetising aftertaste of sage and mint. SUPERIORE.DE

"As charming as the Gran Selezione is, the Ser Lapo is of a pithy and compact construction, precise and demanding, with a stony note and a lot of spice, dominated by the cherry aromas and accompanied by notes of wood right up to the finish. Weinwisser

Bright acids keep the flavors bright, with all of the juiciness that is such a Fonterutoli signature very much front and center." Vinous

"Here's a terrific wine, at a reasonable price point, that gives you an authentic albeit contemporary taste of Tuscany. • "Philip" Rosso Toscana IGT 2015

      “Philip” Rosso Toscana IGT 2015

After almost two centuries, it is time to pay tribute to the enthusiastic grape grower Philip Mazzei (1730-1816). In the form of this pure Cabernet Sauvignon this succeeds extraordinarily well. Elegant deep dark colour, classic aromas, complex fruity spicy taste, tannin and acidity well proportioned, tight, structured and persistent. SUPERIORE.DE

"This wine sports one of my all-time favorite front labels. The 2015 Philip reflects the bold, contemporary and colorful themes that are reflected in the painted portrait of Philip Mazzei (1730-1816) depicted on the label. The wine shows a beautiful appearance with brilliant ruby and dark garnet tones. The bouquet is packed tight with black fruit, blackberry, spice, tobacco and leather." Robert Parker

"A dark-fruited red that shows mulberries, blackberries, creme de cassis, vanilla and dark chocolate with a touch of fresh herbs and cedar. Full body, round yet structured tannins and a chewy finish." James Suckling

“Castello Fonterutoli” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2015

Rich colour, clear scent of blackberries and cherries, some nougat, warm and inviting. With its sweet tannin and an excellent alcohol component, the intense, concentrated taste ensnares the senses. Full of elegance the long finale. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright ruby garnet. Clear but also somewhat reserved nose, of blackberry and dark pepper. Round and supple in the base and course, opens with a lot of fine-meshed, very well integrated tannin, long aftertaste." Falstaff

"Pretty cherry fruit forms the core of this elegant red, with vivid acidity and refined tannins lifting all the elements. Graphite, leather, tobacco and earth notes lend complexity as this expands on the long, resonant finish." Wine Spectator

"The Mazzei family was among the first to embrace the Gran Selezione category of high-end Chianti Classico. Their 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli shows the sharpness and detail that wine is supposed to evoke in the best vintages. It opens to a dark garnet color and mid-weight texture. There is ample muscle and power here, but the overall emphasis is on grace and elegance. You really taste those authentic Sangiovese flavors of wild cherry, forest berry, blue flower and crushed rock." Robert Parker

"Vivid, with a fascinating, herbal-led nose and cherry, plum and oak spice notes. Refreshing and serious palate with spicy oak and polished tannins. Exceptional stuff. Plenty of potential yet." Decanter

"Dried violets and lavender, cedar, cloves, vanilla and tobacco. Full body with ripe and chewy tannins, but this remains focused and dialed-in thanks to mouthwatering acidity. Not to mention beautiful blue fruit that comes to the surface, particularly on the long finish." James Suckling

"The 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is an exceptionally balanced and smooth red wine that is the result of a complicated fruit-blending process. Some 36 biotypes of Sangiovese are used in the mix and are harvested from 120 single vineyard parcels with primarily Alberese and Galestro limestone soils. "The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is one of the most expressive wines I have tasted from the estate. Beautifully perfumed, layered and nuanced, the 2016 has so much to offer. Lavender, spice, menthol, ripe red/purplish fruit and rose petal grace this translucent, beautifully detailed Chianti Classico. The 2016 is a jewel of a wine." Vinous

"Dense and powerful 2016 Chianti Classico with a deep and rich palate of fruit that is tight and compact. Lots of polished tannins to frame the wine. Full-bodied. The spice, bark, and dried-mushroom character highlights the ripe and luscious fruit." James Suckling

"The Mazzei family was one of the first and most enthusiastic advocates of the Gran Selezione movement. Their 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is a crowning achievement for this storied Chianti Classico winery. From an iconic vintage, this blend of 92% Sangiovese and 8% Malvasia Nera, shows sharp and delineated lines. Black fruit, plum and cherry intermingle with spice, tobacco and tilled earth. • "MIX 36" Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

“MIX 36” Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

Very delicious and interesting is the MIX 36 - a spontaneously fermented, pure Sangiovese from 36 different Sangiovese clones. Complex bouquet with aromas of red fruits, hints of leather and light smoked notes. Round and juicy on the palate, interwoven tannins, the maturity potential well recognizable. Approximately 10,000 bottles come onto the market with this third vintage. Particularly attractive for the wine lover: on the label you will find vineyard locations, harvest yields and technical specifications of the winemaking process. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2013 Mix 36 is a clever mono-varietal expression of Sangiovese made from 36 distinct biotypes of the grape, 18 of which are exclusive to the Fonterutoli estate. The vines are 11 years old and harvest started on October 10th this vintage. The fruit is balanced and linear with red cherry, spice, dried blueberry and tobacco. It shows medium density and impressive persistence." Robert Parker

"A red that is extremely polished and refined with blackberry and cherry character. Hints of cedar and dried flowers. Medium body. Juicy fruit." James Suckling

"The 2013 Mix 36, a blend of 36 Sangiovese biotypes on the property, is terrific. Bright, translucent and light on its feet, the 2013 speaks to finesse above all else. Expressive floral notes add lift, and the wine continues to open up in the glass. This beautifully rendered Sangiovese shows what Mazzei can do in a more understated style. Impressive." • "Concerto" Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

      “Concerto” Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

Rich bouquet of red currant, cherry, spices and a delicate vanilla note. On the palate infinitely much fruit, dense and full-bodied, in the background velvety soft tannin and a very discreet acid reader.

The Concerto was born in 1981, a period in which Italian viticulture has dynamically changed. The untapped potential was recognized and experimented with new varieties and for the first time successfully with international grape varieties. Produced from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Rosso Toscana Concerto was one of the pioneers of the later Supertoscan phenomenon and long belonged to the elite wines of the region. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, sparkling ruby with a slight violet hue. Opened with notes of smoke and leather, then lots of blackberry and elderberry, fleshy. Velvety on the palate, shows beautiful, present fruit, opens with grippy, well integrated tannin, salty." Falstaff

"The 2013 Concerto, a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, is an addition to the range. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, spices, leather and licorice all flesh out in the glass. Drink this supple, fruit-forward wine over the next handful of years." Antonio Galloni

"A very structured young wine with firm and very silky tannins. The ripe fruit gives lovely aromas and flavors of blackberry, chocolate and spice. It's full and lightly chewy. Plenty of tannin tension. Fascinating now but better in three and four years. This was first made in 1981 and then was stopped in 1994. But the Mazzei family wanted to bring it back now. It's made in the region of Chianti Classico from the Siepi vineyard." James Suckling

"This wine was born in 1981 (as one of the first so-called super Tuscan wines), although it is never featured prominently among the other popular protagonists in the wide portfolio offered by the Mazzei family. The 2013 Concerto di Fonterutoli is a Toscana IGT blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon that is aged in French oak for 18 months. The results are beautiful and shapely with dark layers of blackberry, spice, tobacco and dried cherry. Vines are planted in limestone and sandstone soils." Robert Parker

    • "Siepi 20 anni" Rosso Toscana IGT 2012

“Siepi 20 anni” Rosso Toscana IGT 2012

Siepi - since his first vintage - elitist and accessible. Very clear and distinctive bouquet of elderberries, dark cherries and blackberries. Smooth on the palate with a lot of dense tannin, in the finish sweet fruit melt, chocolate and tobacco. Big and strong. SUPERIORE.DE

"A 50-50 blend of Merlot and Sangiovese, the 2012 Siepi is a beautiful wine that bursts open with enormous fruit intensity and purity. Siepi is a unique wine that is characterized by a deep sense of sharpness and focus that brings a very bright quality to the bouquet. This vintage represents the 20th anniversary of this wine (the first vintage produced was 1992) although this special single-vineyard has been in family hands since 1435 (you read that correctly)." Robert Parker

"Fantastic depth of fruit and mouthfeel to this red with blackberries, blueberries, spices, walnuts and fresh herb character. Orange peel, too. Full body, round and savory tannins and a mouth watering finish. A blend of sangivoese and merlot. Easily the best Siepi ever, and it celebrates 20 years of production." James Suckling

“Castello Fonterutoli” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2013 · MAGNUM in OWC

Rich colour, clear scent of dark blackberries and cherries, some nougat, warm and inviting. With its sweet tannin and an excellent alcohol component, the intense, concentrated taste ensnares the senses. Elegantly the long finale. SUPERIORE.DE

"Mature bouquet with aromas of maraschino, nougat and leather; the tannins robust, shows character and length, sweet-opulent finale. Vinum

It is made from 92% Sangiovese, and 8% Malvasia Nera and Colorino. The bouquet offers bold cherry and plum with spice and soft tobacco." Robert Parker

"An essence of sweet cherry grounds the surrounding flavors of leather, iron, spice and tobacco in this firm red, which remains vibrant and refined. Bracing acidity and dense, muscular tannins play out on the long finish." Wine Spectator

    Castello di Fonterutoli

The predominantly stony soils have given the wine of the Castello di Fonterutoli the nickname "Wine of stones" in the past. Strict yield restrictions and environmentally conscious management ensure that this parallel designation is maintained. The estate is located in the eponymous municipality five kilometres south of Castellina in the Chianti Classico area. The place is said to have played an important role in the creation of the Chianti area. The Castello di Fonterutoli has been owned by the Mazzei family since 1435. Lapo Mazzei was president of the Consorzio del Marchio Storico Chianti Classico (Gallo Nero) for many years. Today the winery is run with a picturesque view of the Val d'Elsa led by Filippo and Francesco Mazzei.

The farm covers a total area of 650 hectares. Of these, 117 hectares are specialized vineyards in excellent locations divided into five areas: Fonterutoli, Siepi, Badiola, Belvedere and Caggio. The vineyard hills reach a height between 230 and 500 metres above sea level. The winery is very tradition-conscious when it comes to vine cultivation, utilization and expansion.

High quality, a clear concept and professional skill have made the wines of the Castello di Fonterutoli the benchmark for top-class Chianti Classico. The red wines are produced here, with elegance and finesse in mind, under the guidance of oenologist Carlo Ferrini. Your charater as Chianti will be preserved. Among the main wines are "Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli" and the cult product "siepi"which is assigned to the description „supertuscan“ to the fullest. The wine cellar with its avant-garde appearance was opened in 2006 and was named by the wine magazine Decanteras a "the most impressive in all of Chianti" is called. Particularly noteworthy is the barrique cellar with visible rock walls, which can hold up to 3,500 oak barrels. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Mazzei family, who have been involved in viticulture for centuries, is a symbol of Chianti Classico and the oenology of Tuscany ... Uncompromising care of the vineyards is the basis for powerful, lively red wines that focus on good structuring and fully ripe fruit in terms of style."Gambero Rosso 2012
