    • Chianti Classico DOCG 2018

      Chianti Classico DOCG 2018

Excellent, modern design, well structured, enveloping and concentrated - a wonderfully soft Chianti Classico that is already very pleasant to drink. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2018 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli is pretty, supple and easy to like. Soft fruit and silky contours give it quite a bit of appeal and early accessibility. Sweet cherry and plum fruit are nicely pushed forward in this attractive, easygoing Chianti Classico from Fonterutoli." Vinous

"A tight, linear red with plums and hints of walnuts and herbs. Some bark, too. Medium-bodied, tight and juicy with a chewy undertone. Some orange peel. Slightly austere now, but a lovely foil to food." James Suckling

"The Mazzei 2018 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli shows a classic bouquet with tart berry fruit, forest floor, bitter almond, blue flower, cola and grilled herb. The wine presents a classic, cool-vintage profile that suits Sangiovese very nicely as it pulls out the bright, red berry energy that is inherent to this variety. The acidity and bright fruit presented here would make a great companion to chicken roast with potatoes." Robert Parker

    • "Ser Lapo" Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2016

“Ser Lapo” Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2016

With this exceptional Chianti Classico Riserva the Mazzei family celebrates their famous ancestor Ser Lapo, in whose writings the name "Chianti" is mentioned for the first time. The upper part of the label shows a faithful reproduction of one of his writings (from the year 1398) with a beautiful calligraphy. "Don't worry about the cost of this wine, although it was expensive: its quality will make up for it."

Opened with classic aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and fine violet. Warm and full on the palate, firm core of dark sweet fruits, smooth tannins, rich and with elegant acidity. Spicy and long, with an unmistakable appetising aftertaste of sage and mint. SUPERIORE.DE

"As charming as the Gran Selezione is, the Ser Lapo is of a pithy and compact construction, precise and demanding, with a stony note and a lot of spice, dominated by the cherry aromas and accompanied by notes of wood right up to the finish. Weinwisser

"Sparkling, bright ruby red with opaque rim. Compact and red berry nose underlined with light spicy notes, deep plum. Smooth in the attack and course with juicy tannin, balanced body and fruity core, long and salty, exciting, powerful in the final". Falstaff

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo is bold, rich and full of energy. Super-ripe red cherry, kirsch, wild flowers, mint, blood orange and spice all run through the 2016. Bright acids keep the flavors bright, with all of the juiciness that is such a Fonterutoli signature very much front and center." Vinous

"Here's a terrific wine, at a reasonable price point, that gives you an authentic albeit contemporary taste of Tuscany. The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo reflects the best qualities of this classic vintage with sharp lines, good freshness and delineated contours. The wine shows a tight core of black fruit surrounded by softer layers of spice and smoke at the edges." Robert Parker

"Bright aromas of sliced cherries and hints of strawberries with some orange peel. Full body and super fine and ripe tannins. They melt into the wine. Delicate yet energetic. Crisp finish." James Suckling

"A vibrant yet brooding red, with bracing acidity driving the cherry, currant, iron, tobacco and almond flavors. Complex and intense, this needs a few years to absorb the tannins. Delivers fine presence and length." Wine Spectator

After almost two centuries, it is time to set a "monument" to the enthusiastic grape grower Philip Mazzei (1730-1816). In the form of this pure Cabernet Sauvignon, this succeeds exceptionally well. Elegant deep dark colour, classic aromas, complex fruity and spicy taste, tannin and acidity well proportioned, firm, structured and persistent. SUPERIORE.DE

    • "Castello Fonterutoli" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

“Castello Fonterutoli” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of the Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family has for the first time vinified all three major vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, to take into account the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiola.

Castello di Fonterutoli originates from 11 different plots of land at an altitude of 420-510 metres around the hamlet of Fonterutoli in Castellina in Chianti. It is virtually the "Château" and at the same time the oldest cru of the estate and was first produced in 1995 as the predecessor of today's Gran Selezione. Rich in colour and with a clear aroma of blackberries, cherries, violets and flowers, with a touch of nougat. This full-bodied Castello Fonterutoli captivates with its beguiling extract sweetness and the polished tannin. The intensive and concentrated taste ensnares the senses. The long final is full of elegance. SUPERIORE.DE

"From the vineyards around the Castello at 470 meters: cherry fragrant, a hint of pepper, also herbal notes characterize this wine; robust in the mouth, the tannins well integrated, lively acidity, the final harmonious and balanced. To a roast beef with chanterelles." Vinum

"The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is bright, floral and super-expressive. Sweet red berry fruit and floral accents give the 2017 much of its up-front appeal. I would prefer to drink the 2017 over the next decade or so. This is an especially gracious, refined Gran Selezione from high altitude vineyards surrounding the winery." Vinous

"Lots of ripe fruit with walnuts, tile, dried berries and chocolate powder. Full-bodied, velvety and chewy. This is a very powerful and structured Chianti Classico that will rival many top Brunellos." James Suckling

"Intense, inky and demonstrating great focus, with floral lift to a nose of blueberry, cherry, mint and forest floor. To taste it's rich and crisp, with fine-grained tannins framing crunchy fruit, mushrooms, tar and graphite." Decanter

"The Mazzei 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is Sangiovese with a tiny component of Malvasia Nera. The wine is elegantly streamlined and subtle—in fact, more so than I would have expected from this largely opulent and exuberant vintage. The bouquet is both floral and fruity with wild berry, rose hip, lavender and cassis. These aromas are central to the Sangiovese playlist. This wine delivers on all the fundamental elements, although I feel that we got a little more depth and delineation in the previous, cooler-vintage release. The tannins are silky and elegant." • "Vicoregio 36" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

“Vicoregio 36” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of the Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family has for the first time vinified all three major vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, to take into account the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiola.

Vicoregio 36 is the successor of the ambitious Mix 36 and from 2017 a real Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. As a result of 50 years of research, 36 biotypes of the Sangiovese grape have been planted on a sunny plateau near Castelnuova Berardenga, from which this extremely interesting and distinctive wine was created a few years ago. The overall impression is very balanced and straightforward, with hints of red cherries, spices, dried blueberries and tobacco. It is the warmest and most balanced of the three Gran Selezione wines. Its intensity, richness of colour and precise fruit immediately captivate the Sangiovese lover. SUPERIORE.DE

"The former mix 36 - the number comes from the 36 different clones from which the wine is made - is now called Vicoregio and comes from a vineyard in Castelnuovo Berardenga at 350 metres above sea level: it has a bewitching scent of stone fruit, violets and dried roses; it has a cut and yet character, great length, ends on notes of ripe berries, eucalyptus and leather." Vinum

"A pretty red with black cherries, walnuts, spice and hints of dried flowers, following through to a medium to full body, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Hints of bitter citrus rind. Very tight for the ripeness of this vintage." James Suckling

"The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vicoregio 36 shows all of the breadth and resonance of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Dark Sangiovese fruit, lavender, spice and blood orange fill out the layers beautifully. The Vicoregio 36 is a real standout in 2017. Its enveloping personality and natural resonance are impossible to miss." Vinous

"The Mazzei family is introducing quite a few new and ambitious changes to its portfolio this year. This wine is one of them. Previously known as Mix 36, it represents a complicated blend of 36 biotypes of Sangiovese, all planted in an experimental vineyard not too far from the estate's high-technology winery. With this vintage, the wine has been upgraded from IGT status to Gran Selezione, at the top of the Chianti Classico quality pyramid. The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vicoregio 36 offers great purity and focus. The bouquet is redolent of wild blueberry, spice, cola, grilled herb, blue flower and tilled earth. There is a pretty menthol-like note on the close." Robert Parker

    • "MIX 36" Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

“MIX 36” Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

Very delicious and interesting is the MIX 36 - a spontaneously fermented, pure Sangiovese from 36 different Sangiovese clones. Complex bouquet with aromas of red fruits, hints of leather and light smoked notes. Round and juicy on the palate, interwoven tannins, the maturity potential well recognizable. Approximately 10,000 bottles come onto the market with this third vintage. Particularly attractive for the wine lover: on the label you will find vineyard locations, harvest yields and technical specifications of the winemaking process. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2013 Mix 36 is a clever mono-varietal expression of Sangiovese made from 36 distinct biotypes of the grape, 18 of which are exclusive to the Fonterutoli estate. The vines are 11 years old and harvest started on October 10th this vintage. The fruit is balanced and linear with red cherry, spice, dried blueberry and tobacco. It shows medium density and impressive persistence." Robert Parker

"A red that is extremely polished and refined with blackberry and cherry character. Hints of cedar and dried flowers. Medium body. Juicy fruit." James Suckling

"The 2013 Mix 36, a blend of 36 Sangiovese biotypes on the property, is terrific. Bright, translucent and light on its feet, the 2013 speaks to finesse above all else. Expressive floral notes add lift, and the wine continues to open up in the glass. This beautifully rendered Sangiovese shows what Mazzei can do in a more understated style. Impressive." • "Badiòla" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

“Badiòla” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of the Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family has for the first time vinified all three major vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, to take into account the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiola.

Badiòla is the historical name of a vineyard in the municipality of Radda, whose grapes are first vinified separately as Gran Selezione by the Mazzei family with the 2017 vintage. Brilliant ruby garnet, a restrained but clear nose of wild berries, blue flowers, undergrowth, with hints of dark pepper. On the palate Badiòla presents itself masterfully balanced, almost weightless. The very well integrated tannin makes it smooth from the first to the last glass and captivates with its long finish - its elegance is great! SUPERIORE.DE

"The vines grow around the church of the same name in Radda at 570 metres above sea level: engaging raspberry flower, very typical of the variety; on the palate with a fine cut and well-integrated firm tannins and - due to the high altitude - accentuated acidity, pleasantly peppery final. A wine that should still be maturing." Vinum

"A new wine in this range, the 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badiola is a bit more linear than other Gran Seleziones, but that is the personality of Radda speaking. Bright red fruit, chalk, mint and blood orange all open up in this taut, nervy Gran Selezione from Mazzei." Vinous

"A firm, silky red with cherries, berries and chocolate. Medium-bodied, fresh and firm. Racy and fine. Tannic. This needs time to open and come together. A great wine." James Suckling

"Badiòla is a historic vineyard farmed by the Mazzei family, but this is the first Gran Selezione expression made with its fruit. The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Badiòla offers terrific intensity and purity that shows power, but it also holds back to affirm a sense of elegance. In the true sense of the word balance, the wine falls squarely in between those two descriptors. Wild berry fruit, button mushroom, blue flower, cola and underbrush are tightly woven together on the bouquet. Despite the heat and natural fruit concentration associated with this vintage, this wine delivers a special and enduring sense of weightlessness. A mere 3,000 bottles were made." Robert Parker

    • "Concerto" Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

      “Concerto” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

The Concerto was born in 1981, a period in which Italian viticulture has dynamically changed. The untapped potential was recognized and experimented with new varieties and for the first time successfully with international grape varieties. Produced from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Rosso Toscana Concerto was one of the pioneers of the later Supertoscan phenomenon and long belonged to the elite wines of the region.

Rich bouquet of red currant, cherry, spices and a delicate vanilla note. On the palate infinitely much fruit, dense and full-bodied, in the background velvety soft tannin and a very discreet acid wire. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense, bright ruby red. In the nose elegant and inviting, many dark berries, light liquorice, finest spice. In the drink very pleasant with tightly woven tannin, large structure and yet light-footed playing, stretches a wide bow. This wine lives up to its name." Falstaff

"A flamboyant and flavorful red with lots of plum and cherry character. Full body, soft tannins and a fruity finish. Lovely, fruity wine with a caressing structure." James Suckling

"The Cabernet Sauvignon element comes through nicely with dark fruit, spice and some grilled herb. The grape gives the wine a heavier and more concentrated center of gravity. However, the soul and style of the wine is driven by the freshness and delicate aromas of the Sangiovese." Robert Parker

"The 2016 Concerto di Fonterutoli, the estate's blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, is dense, plush and explosive, with superb depth and notable persistence. Super-ripe black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and rose petal build in a rich, dramatic wine endowed with superb depth, intensity and pedigree. All the best elements of the house style are on display in this sumptuous, modern Tuscan red. Two thousand sixteen is a terrific vintage for the Concerto. I loved it." Vinous

    • "Concerto 30 anni" Rosso Toscana IGT 2011

“Concerto 30 anni” Rosso Toscana IGT 2011

The new edition of the classic of this limited anniversary edition celebrates both the thirtieth anniversary of the Concerto and the impressively successful company history that has made the Castello di Fonterutoli one of the most renowned wineries in Italy.

On the palate infinitely much fruit, dense and full-bodied, in the background velvety soft tannin and a very discreet acid reader. SUPERIORE.DE

    • "Siepi 25 anni" Rosso Toscana IGT 2017

“Siepi 25 anni” Rosso Toscana IGT 2017

For the 25th anniversary of the cult wine Siepi, the Mazzei family gave it an embossed bottle. As always, the contents are also full of character: in the bouquet opulent notes of spices, leather and marasca cherry. On the palate, a hearty interplay of black cherry, spices, mint and a tannin that is polished as rarely seen. The structure is precise and crystalline, the Sangiovese and Merlot grape varieties almost merge into a soft, extremely elegant work of art of great personality. SUPERIORE.DE

"The pioneer of a Sangiovese Merlot blend: seductively spicy nose, notes of chocolate and Mediterranean woods; in the mouth pithy, the tannins robust, the tannins powerful, vife acidity, has juice, power and fullness, but still needs to mature." Vinum

"Rich, shiny ruby with a violet tint. Very appealing and intense nose, after dark chocolate and tobacco, then a lot of ripe dark berry fruit, nice play. Juicy and clear on the palate, shows a lot of present fruit, then opens up with pithy, fine tannin in many layers, salty and long." Falstaff

"Celebrating its 25th anniversary in a special commemorative bottle, the 2017 Siepi is a beautifully rich ensemble of Sangiovese and Merlot. The hot and dry vintage has pushed both varieties to extra ripeness and darkness—the hallmarks of the vintage. The bouquet is articulate and intense with black fruit, dried blackberry, cherry, spice, earth and toasted almond. There is abundant richness on the nose. Siepi is an exceptional vineyard site perched on its own little plateau that is drenched in golden sunlight." Robert Parker

"The polish and finesse to this gorgeous, rich wine is really impressive with a full-bodied, dense and layered palate and a soft, caressingly textured finish. The chocolate, berry and hazelnut character is all integrated beautifully. Give this time to acquire some refinement. Try after 2023 and onwards." James Suckling

"The 2017 Siepi is a total knock-out and one of the best recent vintages I can remember tasting. All the elements simply fall into place. Succulent dark cherry, spice, chocolate, leather and licorice build as the 2017 gains volume in the glass. Sangiovese and Merlot have rarely been so complementary. The 2017 is a gorgeous wine that offers plenty of the richness readers have become accustomed to over the years, but in a slightly less extracted style." Vinous

    • "Castello Fonterutoli" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017 <br>MAGNUM in OWC

“Castello Fonterutoli” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017 · MAGNUM in OWC

The tannins are silky and elegant." Castello di Fonterutoli

The predominantly stony soils have given the wine of the Castello di Fonterutoli the nickname "wine of the stones". Strict yield restrictions and environmentally conscious management ensure that this parallel designation is maintained. The estate is located in the eponymous municipality five kilometres south of Castellina in the Chianti Classico area. The town is said to have played an important role in the creation of the Chianti area. The Castello di Fonterutoli has belonged to the Mazzei family since 1435. Lapo Mazzei was president of the Consorzio del Marchio Storico Chianti Classico (Gallo Nero) for many years. Today the estate is managed by Filippo and Francesco Mazzei with a picturesque view of the Val d'Elsa.

The farm covers a total area of 650 hectares. Of these, 117 hectares are specialized vineyards in excellent locations divided into five areas: Fonterutoli, Siepi, Badiola, Belvedere and Caggio. The vineyard hills reach an altitude between 230 and 500 metres above sea level. The winery has a very traditional approach to vine cultivation, exploitation and ageing.

High quality, a clear concept and professional skill have made the wines of the Castello di Fonterutoli the benchmark for top-class Chianti Classico. Red wines, trimmed for elegance and finesse, are produced here under the guidance of oenologist Carlo Ferrini. Their character as Chianti is preserved. Among the main wines are "Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli" and the cult product "Siepi", which fully lives up to the name "Supertuscan". The avant-garde wine cellar, opened in 2006, has been described by the wine magazine Decanter as "the most impressive of all Chianti". Particularly noteworthy is the barrique cellar with visible rock walls, which can hold up to 3,500 oak barrels.  SUPERIORE.DE

"The Mazzei family, who have been involved in viticulture for centuries, is a symbol of Chianti Classico and the oenology of Tuscany ... Uncompromising care of the vineyards is the basis for vigorous, lively reds, which in their style rely on good structuring and fully ripe fruit." Gambero Rosso 2012
