• "Philip" Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

      “Philip” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

After almost two centuries, it is time to set a "monument" to the enthusiastic grape grower Philip Mazzei (1730-1816). In the form of this single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon this succeeds extraordinarily well. Elegant deep dark colour, classic aromas, complex fruity-spicy taste, tannin and acidity well proportioned, taut, structured and persistent. SUPERIORE.DE

"It shows terrific balance and intensity in this classic vintage. Dark fruit, blackberry, cassis, spice, tar and leather build intensity as the wine warms in the glass. It demonstrates impeccable balance and beautifully polished length, making this a wine that offers elegance and power in equal measure." Robert Parker

"Really attractive aromas of cherries, cedar, citrus and flowers follow through to a full-body with fine, polished tannins and delicious fruit. Savory with an ash and stone undertone to the fruit character." James Suckling

    • "Castello Fonterutoli" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018

“Castello Fonterutoli” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018

Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family has for the first time vinified all three large vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione to reflect the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiola.

Castello di Fonterutoli comes from 11 different plots at an altitude of 420-510 m around the hamlet of Fonterutoli in Castellina in Chianti. It is quasi the "château" and at the same time the oldest cru of the winery and was first produced in 1995 as the predecessor of today's Gran Selezione. Rich colour and a clear scent of blackberries, cherries, violets and flowers, plus a little nougat. This full-bodied Castello Fonterutoli impresses with its beguiling extract sweetness and polished tannin. The intense and concentrated taste enchants the senses. The long final is full of elegance. SUPERIORE.DE

"Spring flowers and crushed forest fruit over tangerine and sweet tobacco nuances. Spicy palate with lots of black fruits." Decanter

"Cherries and strawberries on the nose with sandalwood and dried flowers. Medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins and a beautiful, long finish. This is a very fine-textured Chianti Classico with such complexity and finesse. Drinkable now, but better in 2022." James Suckling

    • "Vicoregio 36" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

“Vicoregio 36” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family has for the first time vinified all three large vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione to reflect the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiola.

Vicoregio 36 is the successor to the ambitious Mix 36 and, as of 2017, a true Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. As a result of 50 years of research, 36 biotypes of the Sangiovese grape were planted on a sunny plateau near Castelnuova Berardenga, from which this extremely interesting and distinctive wine was created a few years ago. The overall impression is very balanced and straightforward with hints of red cherries, spices, dried blueberries and tobacco. It is the warmest and most balanced of the three Gran Selezione wines. Its intensity, richness of colour and precise fruit instantly captivate the Sangiovese lover. SUPERIORE.DE

"The former Mix 36 - the number comes from the 36 different clones from which the wine is made - is now called Vicoregio and comes from a vineyard in Castelnuovo Berardenga at 350 m above sea level: smells beguilingly of stone fruit, violets and dried roses; has polish and yet also character, great length, ending on notes of ripe berries, eucalyptus and leather." Vinum

"Bright, powerful ruby. Fragrant nose with notes of tobacco and fresh cherries, some blood orange. Polished and juicy in the attack and course, very well elaborated fruit, lively acidity, nice play in the final." Falstaff

"A pretty red with black cherries, walnuts, spice and hints of dried flowers, following through to a medium to full body, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Hints of bitter citrus rind. Very tight for the ripeness of this vintage." James Suckling

"The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vicoregio 36 shows all of the breadth and resonance of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Dark Sangiovese fruit, lavender, spice and blood orange fill out the layers beautifully. The Vicoregio 36 is a real standout in 2017. Its enveloping personality and natural resonance are impossible to miss." Vinous

"The Mazzei family is introducing quite a few new and ambitious changes to its portfolio this year. This wine is one of them. Previously known as Mix 36, it represents a complicated blend of 36 biotypes of Sangiovese, all planted in an experimental vineyard not too far from the estate's high-technology winery. With this vintage, the wine has been upgraded from IGT status to Gran Selezione, at the top of the Chianti Classico quality pyramid. The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vicoregio 36 offers great purity and focus. The bouquet is redolent of wild blueberry, spice, cola, grilled herb, blue flower and tilled earth. There is a pretty menthol-like note on the close." Robert Parker

    • "Badiòla" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

“Badiòla” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family has for the first time vinified all three large vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione to reflect the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiola.

Badiòla is the historic name of a vineyard in the municipality of Radda, whose grapes are vinified separately for the first time by the Mazzei family as Gran Selezione with the 2017 vintage. Bright ruby, a restrained but clear nose of wild berries, blue flowers, undergrowth, and hints of dark pepper. On the palate, Badiòla is masterfully balanced, almost weightless. The very well integrated tannin makes it seem supple from the first to the last glass and impresses with a long finish - its elegance is magnificent! SUPERIORE.DE

"The vines grow around the church of the same name in Radda at 570 m above sea level: engaging raspberry blossom, very typical of the variety; on the palate with fine polish and well-integrated firm tannins and - due to the high altitude - accentuated acidity, pleasantly peppery final. A wine that should still mature." Vinum

"Bright, powerful ruby. Fragrant nose with notes of tobacco and fresh cherries, some blood orange. Polished and juicy in the attack and course, very well elaborated fruit, lively acidity, nice play in the final." Falstaff

"A new wine in this range, the 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badiola is a bit more linear than other Gran Seleziones, but that is the personality of Radda speaking. Bright red fruit, chalk, mint and blood orange all open up in this taut, nervy Gran Selezione from Mazzei." Vinous

"A firm, silky red with cherries, berries and chocolate. Medium-bodied, fresh and firm. Racy and fine. Tannic. This needs time to open and come together. A great wine." James Suckling

"Badiòla is a historic vineyard farmed by the Mazzei family, but this is the first Gran Selezione expression made with its fruit. The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Badiòla offers terrific intensity and purity that shows power, but it also holds back to affirm a sense of elegance. In the true sense of the word balance, the wine falls squarely in between those two descriptors. Wild berry fruit, button mushroom, blue flower, cola and underbrush are tightly woven together on the bouquet. Despite the heat and natural fruit concentration associated with this vintage, this wine delivers a special and enduring sense of weightlessness. A mere 3,000 bottles were made." Robert Parker

It's medium-to full-bodied with integrated tannins that are soft and creamy. Succulent finish. A little tight at the end, but will open nicely in a year or two. Best from 2023." James Suckling

"Delicate and youthful nose of pure crunchy red cherry, vanilla framed by herbal and leathery notes. Lovely brambly palate with a vibrant acidity and blood oranges character. Long, mineral finish." Decanter

    • "MIX 36" Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

“MIX 36” Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

Very delicious and interesting is the MIX 36 - a spontaneously fermented, pure Sangiovese from 36 different Sangiovese clones. Complex bouquet with aromas of red fruits, hints of leather and light smoked notes. Round and juicy on the palate, interwoven tannins, the maturity potential well recognizable. Approximately 10,000 bottles come onto the market with this third vintage. Particularly attractive for the wine lover: on the label you will find vineyard locations, harvest yields and technical specifications of the winemaking process. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2013 Mix 36 is a clever mono-varietal expression of Sangiovese made from 36 distinct biotypes of the grape, 18 of which are exclusive to the Fonterutoli estate. The vines are 11 years old and harvest started on October 10th this vintage. The fruit is balanced and linear with red cherry, spice, dried blueberry and tobacco. It shows medium density and impressive persistence." Robert Parker

"A red that is extremely polished and refined with blackberry and cherry character. Hints of cedar and dried flowers. Medium body. Juicy fruit." James Suckling

"The 2013 Mix 36, a blend of 36 Sangiovese biotypes on the property, is terrific. Bright, translucent and light on its feet, the 2013 speaks to finesse above all else. Expressive floral notes add lift, and the wine continues to open up in the glass. This beautifully rendered Sangiovese shows what Mazzei can do in a more understated style. Impressive." • "Concerto" Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

      “Concerto” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

The Concerto was born in 1981, a period in which Italian viticulture has dynamically changed. The untapped potential was recognized and experimented with new varieties and for the first time successfully with international grape varieties. Produced from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Rosso Toscana Concerto was one of the pioneers of the later Supertoscan phenomenon and long belonged to the elite wines of the region.

Rich bouquet of red currant, cherry, spices and a delicate vanilla note. On the palate infinitely much fruit, dense and full-bodied, in the background velvety soft tannin and a very discreet acid wire. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense, bright ruby red. In the nose elegant and inviting, many dark berries, light liquorice, finest spice. In the drink very pleasant with tightly woven tannin, large structure and yet light-footed playing, stretches a wide bow. This wine lives up to its name." Falstaff

"A flamboyant and flavorful red with lots of plum and cherry character. Full body, soft tannins and a fruity finish. Lovely, fruity wine with a caressing structure." James Suckling

"The Cabernet Sauvignon element comes through nicely with dark fruit, spice and some grilled herb. The grape gives the wine a heavier and more concentrated center of gravity. However, the soul and style of the wine is driven by the freshness and delicate aromas of the Sangiovese." Robert Parker

"The 2016 Concerto di Fonterutoli, the estate's blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, is dense, plush and explosive, with superb depth and notable persistence. Super-ripe black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and rose petal build in a rich, dramatic wine endowed with superb depth, intensity and pedigree. All the best elements of the house style are on display in this sumptuous, modern Tuscan red. Two thousand sixteen is a terrific vintage for the Concerto. I loved it." Vinous

“Castello Fonterutoli” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018 · MAGNUM in OWC

    • "Siepi" Rosso Toscana IGT 2018

      “Siepi” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018

Siepi is developing more and more into a cult wine that can easily keep up with the very big reds of Tuscany. The 2018 edition presents itself powerful and very nicely centred, here all elements fit together perfectly. Ripe dark berry fruit, forest floor and roasted almonds. Intense and powerful on the palate with complex and layered hints of plum, tobacco and forest floor. The tension of extract sweetness and polished tannins leads into a fresh, spicy finish with an interesting salty note. SUPERIORE.DE

"This is one of the 50 wines that changed Italian wine culture." Gambero Rosso

"Shiny, rich ruby with a fine violet shimmer. Very clear and memorable nose, full of cassis and blackberry, balsamic notes in the background. Very precise on the palate, showing lots of fresh fruit of black cherry, polished, finely meshed tannin, fine melting on the final." Falstaff

"A lush, polished version, this red is bursting with black cherry, plum and violet aromas and flavors. It's heady, showing a touch of heat on the lingering finish." Wine Spectator

"Mazzei 2018 Siepi is a dark and robust Tuscan red with a heavy center of gravity. This medium to full-bodied blend of Sangiovese and Merlot offers plenty of spice, plum, tobacco and blue flower. This wine offers beautiful intensity and richness with an especially smooth texture. It wraps thickly over the palate, imparting more dark fruit and savory spice along the way." Robert Parker

"There is a sweetness here that is enveloping and seductive with baked heart undertones set again rasperry, plum, black cherry and sandalwood. Soft and caressing tannins where the grace and aromatic power of Sangiovese is giving a satiny texture and enveloping mouthfeel by the Merlot. A brilliant wine that has an identity and a sense of place. First vintage 1992. Located in Chianti Classico, the Estate has a 600 ha forest that practices sustainable agro-forestry and is more than carbon neutral, in fact having a positive carbon balance where the Estate absorbs 5 times as much CO2 as it emits." Decanter

"Extremely perfumed and crystal-clear with violets, plums, raspberries, walnuts and black olives. It's medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins that are extremely polished and refined. The length is long and very precise. Chocolate and hazelnuts." James Suckling

"Siepi, Fonterutoli's Merlot/Sangiovese blend, is absolutely gorgeous in 2018. Rich, pliant and creamy, Siepi offers all of the seductiveness of Merlot with the bright acids and grip of Sangiovese. Inky blue/purplish fruit, lavender, dried herbs, spice, licorice and new leather meld together in an open-knit, inviting Tuscan red with no hard edges and tons of allure shaped by alberese soils with a good bit of clay. The 2018 is an undeniably sexy wine with so much immediacy. The 2018 is positively stellar and also one of the very best editions in recent memory. Don't miss it." Vinous

1 bottle à 0,75l | "Vicoregio 36" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018

"There's sweetness of fruit and finesse to this, giving a creamy texture and plenty of cherry, berry, and rose-water character.

    • "Siepi" Rosso Toscana IGT 2018
MAGNUM in OWC

“Siepi” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018 · MAGNUM in OWC

Siepi is developing more and more into a cult wine that can easily compete with the very big reds of Tuscany.

    • "Il Caggio IPSUS" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2015

“Il Caggio IPSUS” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2015

With the first vintage of this single vineyard Sangiovese, the Mazzei family has no less objective than to make the best wine of the Chianti Classico appellation. Seven different Sangiovese clones, four of them from our own 50 years of research, form the basis for a Gran Selezione, which is produced at an altitude of up to 350 metres in the single vineyard Il Caggio not far from Castellina (and only in the best vintages).

Mazzei has already come close to this high standard with his debut year. The just 3,000 bottles of the very good 2015 vintage point the way to Sangiovese Olympus: sparkling ruby red, opulent bouquet of cherry, dried fruit, herbs and violets. On the palate again small red berries, flanked by a present but very elegant tannin, precise and straightforward. In the final polished and very long, perfectly proportioned and harmonious. Leaves a beautiful and unique impression, it expands the scale of what one could expect from a Gran Selezione until today. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Ipsus, 100% Sangiovese, is compelling, not to mention a fabulous debut. A very traditional fermentation of three weeks on the skins, with post-fermentation maceration, and then aging in cask yields a decidedly old-school inspired wine with tons of structure, aromatic intensity and depth. Rose petal, mint, blood orange and sweet tobacco give the 2015 striking layers of nuance. This is such a gorgeous and inviting wine, and a tremendous first effort." Vinous

"This is a new project (and a second, independent brand) headed by the Mazzei family of Castello di Fonterutoli. The Caggio 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Ipsus strives for Sangiovese purity and a sense of place. It achieves both, thanks to careful work in identifying a cool growing site for the Tuscan variety and a classic or traditional approach to winemaking with carefully managed maceration and aging in oak tonneaux. The results are soulful and profound with wild blueberry or raspberry, forest floor, blue flower and clove-flavored orange peel. The tannins are supple and smooth, yet there is enough structure and linearity to carry the wine forward in time. This was a warm and sunny vintage, and I can't imagine a better growing season from which to create an inaugural wine such as this. Ipsus is a new addition to a very limited group of vinous icons from Tuscany." Robert Parker

"This is a fantastic new Chianti Classico from the Mazzei family, from a small estate near Castellina in Chianti. Shows so many perfumes of cherries, strawberries, violets, spices and dried oranges that follow through to a full yet tight and very agile palate. Supple. Intense yet very fine tannins. Extremely long and polished." James Suckling

    • "MIX 36" Rosso Toscana IGT 2013
6 Bottles in OWC

“MIX 36” Rosso Toscana IGT 2013 · 6 Bottles in OWC

Impressive." • "Concerto" Rosso Toscana IGT 2018
6 Bottles in OWC

“Concerto” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018 · 6 Bottles in OWC

Concerto was born in 1981, a time of dynamic change in Italian viticulture. The hitherto unused potential was recognised and experiments were carried out with new grape varieties and, for the first time, successfully with international grape varieties. Produced from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Rosso Toscana Concerto was one of the pioneers of the later phenomenon of the Supertoscans and was one of the elite wines of the region for a long time.

Intense, bright ruby red. Rich bouquet of red currant, cherry, spices and a delicate vanilla note. Endless fruit on the palate, dense and full-bodied, velvety tannin in the background and a very discreet acid wire. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark ruby red with garnet. In the nose after cherry and noble woods, in the reverberation after cigar box, undergrowth. Taut and compact on the palate, perceptible, well-integrated wood, with power, long finish, with pressure." Falstaff

About the winemakersCastello di FonterutoliTuscany | Chianti
    Castello di Fonterutoli

The predominantly stony soils have given the wine of the Castello di Fonterutoli the nickname "wine of the stones". Strict yield restrictions and environmentally conscious management ensure that this parallel designation is maintained. The estate is located in the eponymous municipality five kilometres south of Castellina in the Chianti Classico area. The town is said to have played an important role in the creation of the Chianti area. The Castello di Fonterutoli has belonged to the Mazzei family since 1435. Lapo Mazzei was president of the Consorzio del Marchio Storico Chianti Classico (Gallo Nero) for many years. Today the estate is managed by Filippo and Francesco Mazzei with a picturesque view of the Val d'Elsa.

The farm covers a total area of 650 hectares. Of these, 117 hectares are specialized vineyards in excellent locations divided into five areas: Fonterutoli, Siepi, Badiola, Belvedere and Caggio. The vineyard hills reach an altitude between 230 and 500 metres above sea level. The winery has a very traditional approach to vine cultivation, exploitation and ageing.

High quality, a clear concept and professional skill have made the wines of the Castello di Fonterutoli the benchmark for top-class Chianti Classico. Red wines, trimmed for elegance and finesse, are produced here under the guidance of oenologist Carlo Ferrini. Their character as Chianti is preserved. Among the main wines are "Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli" and the cult product "Siepi", which fully lives up to the name "Supertuscan". The avant-garde wine cellar, opened in 2006, has been described by the wine magazine Decanter as "the most impressive of all Chianti". Particularly noteworthy is the barrique cellar with visible rock walls, which can hold up to 3,500 oak barrels. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Mazzei family, who have been involved in viticulture for centuries, is a symbol of Chianti Classico and the oenology of Tuscany ... Uncompromising care of the vineyards is the basis for vigorous, lively reds, which in their style rely on good structuring and fully ripe fruit." Gambero Rosso 2012
