• "Ser Lapo" Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2018

“Ser Lapo” Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2018

With this exceptional Chianti Classico Riserva, the Mazzei family celebrates their famous ancestor Ser Lapo, in whose writings the name "Chianti" is mentioned for the first time. The upper part of the label features a faithful reproduction of one of his writings (from 1398) with beautiful calligraphy. "Do not worry about the cost of this wine, although it was expensive: its quality will make up for it."

Opens with classic aromas of blackberry, cassis and fine violet notes. Warm and full on the palate, firm core of dark sweet fruits, smooth tannins, rich and with elegant acidity. Spicy and long, unmistakably the appetising hint of sage and mint on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Black cherry, bark and earth on the nose with some dark-mushroom character. It's full-bodied with very soft tannins and a juicy, savory finish. Wet-earth and forest-floor character comes through nicely at the finish." James Suckling

"The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo is a powerful, wild wine. Crushed flowers, game, herbs and licorice notes give the 2018 its distinctly savory, earthy personality. Brooding in feel, the 2018 will benefit from a few years in bottle. Most of this fruit comes from Mazzei's Caggio property, the site that informs the new Ipsus wine. In my view, Ser Lapo is the hidden gem in the Mazzei range, and the wine I would most like to drink, if forced to chose just one Chianti Classico in the lineup." Vinous

    • "Philip" Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

      “Philip” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

After almost two centuries, it is time to set a "monument" to the enthusiastic grape grower Philip Mazzei (1730-1816). In the form of this single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon this succeeds extraordinarily well. Elegant deep dark colour, classic aromas, complex fruity-spicy taste, tannin and acidity well proportioned, taut, structured and persistent. SUPERIORE.DE

"It shows terrific balance and intensity in this classic vintage. Dark fruit, blackberry, cassis, spice, tar and leather build intensity as the wine warms in the glass. It demonstrates impeccable balance and beautifully polished length, making this a wine that offers elegance and power in equal measure." Robert Parker

"Really attractive aromas of cherries, cedar, citrus and flowers follow through to a full-body with fine, polished tannins and delicious fruit. Savory with an ash and stone undertone to the fruit character." James Suckling

    • "Castello Fonterutoli" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018

“Castello Fonterutoli” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018

Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family has for the first time vinified all three large vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione to reflect the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiola.

Castello di Fonterutoli comes from 11 different plots at an altitude of 420-510 m around the hamlet of Fonterutoli in Castellina in Chianti. It is quasi the "château" and at the same time the oldest cru of the winery and was first produced in 1995 as the predecessor of today's Gran Selezione. Rich colour and a clear scent of blackberries, cherries, violets and flowers, plus a little nougat. This full-bodied Castello Fonterutoli impresses with its beguiling extract sweetness and polished tannin. The intense and concentrated taste enchants the senses. The long final is full of elegance. SUPERIORE.DE

"Spring flowers and crushed forest fruit over tangerine and sweet tobacco nuances. Spicy palate with lots of black fruits." Decanter

"Cherries and strawberries on the nose with sandalwood and dried flowers. Medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins and a beautiful, long finish. This is a very fine-textured Chianti Classico with such complexity and finesse. Drinkable now, but better in 2022." James Suckling

"The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is silky, floral and light on its feet. Crushed flowers, mint, spice, blood orange and sweet red cherry are all very nicely lifted in the glass. This mid-weight Gran Selezione is more finesse than power. Its balance is simply impeccable right out of the gate." Vinous

    • "Badiòla" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

“Badiòla” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family has for the first time vinified all three large vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione to reflect the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiola.

Badiòla is the historic name of a vineyard in the municipality of Radda, whose grapes are vinified separately for the first time by the Mazzei family as Gran Selezione with the 2017 vintage. Bright ruby, a restrained but clear nose of wild berries, blue flowers, undergrowth, and hints of dark pepper. On the palate, Badiòla is masterfully balanced, almost weightless. The very well integrated tannin makes it seem supple from the first to the last glass and impresses with a long finish - its elegance is magnificent! SUPERIORE.DE

"The vines grow around the church of the same name in Radda at 570 m above sea level: engaging raspberry blossom, very typical of the variety; on the palate with fine polish and well-integrated firm tannins and - due to the high altitude - accentuated acidity, pleasantly peppery final. A wine that should still mature." Vinum

"Bright, powerful ruby. Fragrant nose with notes of tobacco and fresh cherries, some blood orange. Polished and juicy in the attack and course, very well elaborated fruit, lively acidity, nice play in the final." Falstaff

"A new wine in this range, the 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badiola is a bit more linear than other Gran Seleziones, but that is the personality of Radda speaking. Bright red fruit, chalk, mint and blood orange all open up in this taut, nervy Gran Selezione from Mazzei." Vinous

"A firm, silky red with cherries, berries and chocolate. Medium-bodied, fresh and firm. Racy and fine. Tannic. This needs time to open and come together. A great wine." James Suckling

"Badiòla is a historic vineyard farmed by the Mazzei family, but this is the first Gran Selezione expression made with its fruit. The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Badiòla offers terrific intensity and purity that shows power, but it also holds back to affirm a sense of elegance. In the true sense of the word balance, the wine falls squarely in between those two descriptors. Wild berry fruit, button mushroom, blue flower, cola and underbrush are tightly woven together on the bouquet. Despite the heat and natural fruit concentration associated with this vintage, this wine delivers a special and enduring sense of weightlessness. A mere 3,000 bottles were made." Robert Parker

"Sweet berries on the nose with citrus and cedar undertones. Hints of dried flowers, too. Full-bodied with a tight palate and polished tannins. The wine shows plenty of fruit, cream and cedar undertones. Chewy yet friendly finish." James Suckling

"The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badiòla is a bit tight and austere in this vintage. Then again that is the site. Crushed rocks, mint, white flowers and red-toned fruit open over time, but only with great reluctance. The Badiòla is an intriguing wine, to be sure, but it is not especially forthcoming today. “Vicoregio 36” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018

Vicoregio 36 is the successor to the ambitious Mix 36 and, as of 2017, a true Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. As a result of 50 years of research, 36 biotypes of the Sangiovese grape were planted on a sunny plateau near Castelnuova Berardenga, from which this extremely interesting and distinctive wine was created a few years ago. The overall impression is very balanced and straightforward with hints of red cherries, spices, dried blueberries and tobacco. It is the warmest and most balanced of the three Gran Selezione wines. Its intensity, richness of colour and precise fruit instantly captivate the Sangiovese lover. SUPERIORE.DE

"There's sweetness of fruit and finesse to this, giving a creamy texture and plenty of cherry, berry, and rose-water character. It's medium-to full-bodied with integrated tannins that are soft and creamy. Succulent finish. A little tight at the end, but will open nicely in a year or two. Best from 2023." James Suckling

"Delicate and youthful nose of pure crunchy red cherry, vanilla framed by herbal and leathery notes. Lovely brambly palate with a vibrant acidity and blood oranges character. Long, mineral finish." Decanter

"The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vicoregio 36 is the most powerful of the Mazzei Gran Seleziones. It emerges from a site in Castelnuovo Berardenga planted with 36 Sangiovese clones. Rich and ample in feel, with notable depth, the 2018 will need a few years to be at its best." Vinous

    • "MIX 36" Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

“MIX 36” Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

Very delicious and interesting is the MIX 36 - a spontaneously fermented, pure Sangiovese from 36 different Sangiovese clones. Complex bouquet with aromas of red fruits, hints of leather and light smoked notes. Round and juicy on the palate, interwoven tannins, the maturity potential well recognizable. Approximately 10,000 bottles come onto the market with this third vintage. Particularly attractive for the wine lover: on the label you will find vineyard locations, harvest yields and technical specifications of the winemaking process. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2013 Mix 36 is a clever mono-varietal expression of Sangiovese made from 36 distinct biotypes of the grape, 18 of which are exclusive to the Fonterutoli estate. The vines are 11 years old and harvest started on October 10th this vintage. The fruit is balanced and linear with red cherry, spice, dried blueberry and tobacco. It shows medium density and impressive persistence." Robert Parker

"A red that is extremely polished and refined with blackberry and cherry character. Hints of cedar and dried flowers. Medium body. Juicy fruit." James Suckling

"The 2013 Mix 36, a blend of 36 Sangiovese biotypes on the property, is terrific. Bright, translucent and light on its feet, the 2013 speaks to finesse above all else. Expressive floral notes add lift, and the wine continues to open up in the glass. This beautifully rendered Sangiovese shows what Mazzei can do in a more understated style. Impressive." • "Concerto" Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

      “Concerto” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

The Concerto was born in 1981, a period in which Italian viticulture has dynamically changed. The untapped potential was recognized and experimented with new varieties and for the first time successfully with international grape varieties. Produced from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Rosso Toscana Concerto was one of the pioneers of the later Supertoscan phenomenon and long belonged to the elite wines of the region.

Rich bouquet of red currant, cherry, spices and a delicate vanilla note. On the palate infinitely much fruit, dense and full-bodied, in the background velvety soft tannin and a very discreet acid wire. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense, bright ruby red. In the nose elegant and inviting, many dark berries, light liquorice, finest spice. In the drink very pleasant with tightly woven tannin, large structure and yet light-footed playing, stretches a wide bow. This wine lives up to its name." Falstaff

"A flamboyant and flavorful red with lots of plum and cherry character. Full body, soft tannins and a fruity finish. Lovely, fruity wine with a caressing structure." James Suckling

"The Cabernet Sauvignon element comes through nicely with dark fruit, spice and some grilled herb. The grape gives the wine a heavier and more concentrated center of gravity. However, the soul and style of the wine is driven by the freshness and delicate aromas of the Sangiovese." Robert Parker

"The 2016 Concerto di Fonterutoli, the estate's blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, is dense, plush and explosive, with superb depth and notable persistence. Super-ripe black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and rose petal build in a rich, dramatic wine endowed with superb depth, intensity and pedigree. All the best elements of the house style are on display in this sumptuous, modern Tuscan red. Two thousand sixteen is a terrific vintage for the Concerto. I loved it." Vinous

    • "Concerto" Rosso Toscana IGT 2018

      “Concerto” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018

Concerto was born in 1981, a time of dynamic change in Italian viticulture. The hitherto unused potential was recognised and experiments were carried out with new grape varieties and, for the first time, successfully with international grape varieties. Produced from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Rosso Toscana Concerto was one of the pioneers of the later phenomenon of the Supertoscans and was one of the elite wines of the region for a long time.

Intense, bright ruby red. Rich bouquet of red currant, cherry, spices and a delicate vanilla note. Endless fruit on the palate, dense and full-bodied, velvety tannin in the background and a very discreet acid wire. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark ruby red with garnet. In the nose after cherry and noble woods, in the reverberation after cigar box, undergrowth. Taut and compact on the palate, perceptible, well-integrated wood, with power, long finish, with pressure." Falstaff

"The 2018 Concerto di Fonterutoli is a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Inky blue fruit, crème de cassis, licorice, spice and menthol, meld together in a sumptuous, voluptuous wine that marries vibrancy with opulence. This beautifully layered, racy red will drink well for the next decade or so. The 2018 is just gorgeous." Vinous

    • "Castello Fonterutoli" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018
MAGNUM in OWC

“Castello Fonterutoli” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018 · MAGNUM in OWC

    • "Siepi" Rosso Toscana IGT 2019

      “Siepi” Rosso Toscana IGT 2019

The 2019 Siepi is a stunning wine that appeals to all the senses with just the right amount of complexity. The wine is soft, brooding, velvety and long lasting. It is made from equal parts Merlot and Sangiovese and both grapes bring their best qualities to the blend. The Sangiovese grape shows a distinct personality with area-specific notes of small berries and spices, and it also offers a wonderfully fresh acidity. The Merlot plays a strong role in the background, adding softness, richness and fullness. This is an intense, punchy wine that has a terrificrange of tension, from extract sweetness to polished tannins into a fresh, spicy finish with an interesting salty note. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, deep dark ruby with violet shimmer. Very appealing and dense nose, rich notes of blackberry, blueberry, some black truffle, spicy macchia herbs, lots of cassis. Lots of plump and juicy fruit on the palate, very present, blackberry and cassis, unfolds with fine-meshed, almost silky tannin, firm pressure and fine resinous notes on the final." Falstaff

"Lively, sinewy nose of balsamic. Very appetising and sleek-fruited. Already enjoyable. Quite a feat! Marked acidity but fun. Easier to see the Sangiovese than the Merlot, so this is a genuine representative of Tuscany and the hills it was grown in, but it still has a long way to go." Jancis Robinson

"Power and seduction straight away on the nose, this smells intensely of black cherries and blueberries. The palate is juicy and instantly mouthwatering giving an abundance of succulent red berries and a touch of herbal spice on the finish. This is excellent quality, I adore it. Smooth and silky with purity and energy. Really shines in the glass - drinking well now but will also age." Decanter

"This is a really racy and fine Siepi with currant, black-cherry and dark-chocolate character. It's medium-to full-bodied with very long, intense tannins that are linear and fine-textured. Really builds on the palate. Super structure. Finesse with power. Try after 2024 and onwards." James Suckling

"The 2019 Siepi continues a trend towards greater finesse and nuance in this wine. Crème de cassis, lavender, spice, licorice and plum meld together effortlessly in the glass. Dense and layered, with striking detail, the 2019 is so impressive. The flavors are bright, bold and punchy. An exceptionally beautiful and riveting wine, the 2019 is rich and concentrated, but not at all heavy. What a total knock-out." Vinous

"Super elegant nose with red fruits, rose petals, violets, toasted almonds, blood oranges and fresh herbs. Bold palate with full body." Decanter

Patience is of the essence, as this taut Gran Selezione is going to need at least a few years to unwind." Vinous

“Siepi” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018 · MAGNUM in OWC

Siepi is developing more and more into a cult wine that can easily compete with the very big reds of Tuscany. The 2018 edition presents itself powerful and very nicely centred, here all elements fit together perfectly. Ripe dark berry fruit, forest floor and roasted almonds. Intense and powerful on the palate with complex and layered hints of plum, tobacco and forest floor. The tension of extract sweetness and polished tannins leads into a fresh, spicy finish with an interesting salty note. SUPERIORE.DE

"This is one of the 50 wines that changed Italian wine culture." Gambero Rosso

"Shiny, rich ruby with a fine violet shimmer. Very clear and memorable nose, full of cassis and blackberry, balsamic notes in the background. Very precise on the palate, showing lots of fresh fruit of black cherry, polished, finely meshed tannin, fine melting on the final." Falstaff

"A lush, polished version, this red is bursting with black cherry, plum and violet aromas and flavors. It's heady, showing a touch of heat on the lingering finish." Wine Spectator

"Mazzei 2018 Siepi is a dark and robust Tuscan red with a heavy center of gravity. This medium to full-bodied blend of Sangiovese and Merlot offers plenty of spice, plum, tobacco and blue flower. This wine offers beautiful intensity and richness with an especially smooth texture. It wraps thickly over the palate, imparting more dark fruit and savory spice along the way." Robert Parker

"There is a sweetness here that is enveloping and seductive with baked heart undertones set again rasperry, plum, black cherry and sandalwood. Soft and caressing tannins where the grace and aromatic power of Sangiovese is giving a satiny texture and enveloping mouthfeel by the Merlot. A brilliant wine that has an identity and a sense of place. First vintage 1992. Located in Chianti Classico, the Estate has a 600 ha forest that practices sustainable agro-forestry and is more than carbon neutral, in fact having a positive carbon balance where the Estate absorbs 5 times as much CO2 as it emits." Decanter

"Extremely perfumed and crystal-clear with violets, plums, raspberries, walnuts and black olives. It's medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins that are extremely polished and refined. The length is long and very precise. Chocolate and hazelnuts." James Suckling

"Siepi, Fonterutoli's Merlot/Sangiovese blend, is absolutely gorgeous in 2018. Rich, pliant and creamy, Siepi offers all of the seductiveness of Merlot with the bright acids and grip of Sangiovese. Inky blue/purplish fruit, lavender, dried herbs, spice, licorice and new leather meld together in an open-knit, inviting Tuscan red with no hard edges and tons of allure shaped by alberese soils with a good bit of clay. The 2018 is an undeniably sexy wine with so much immediacy. The 2018 is positively stellar and also one of the very best editions in recent memory. Don't miss it." Vinous

    • "Siepi" Rosso Toscana IGT 2019
MAGNUM in OWC

“Siepi” Rosso Toscana IGT 2019 · MAGNUM in OWC

    • "MIX 36" Rosso Toscana IGT 2013
6 Bottles in OWC

“MIX 36” Rosso Toscana IGT 2013 · 6 Bottles in OWC

Impressive." • "Il Caggio IPSUS" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2016

“Il Caggio IPSUS” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2016

With this single-vineyard Sangiovese, the Mazzei family pursues no less a goal than to make the best wine in the Chianti Classico appellation. Seven different Sangiovese clones, four of them from their own 50 years of research, form the basis for a Gran Selezione that is produced at an altitude of up to 350 m in the single vineyard Il Caggio not far from Castellina (and only in the best vintages).

Just 3,000 bottles of the Tuscan top vintage 2016 point the way to the Sangiovese Olympus: Sparkling ruby red, opulent bouquet of cherry, dried fruit, herbs and violets. On the palate again small red berries, flanked by a present but very elegant tannin, precise and straightforward. The final is polished and very long, perfectly proportioned and harmonious. Leaves a beautiful and unique impression, it expands the standard of what one could expect from a Gran Selezione until today. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Ipsus is the second vintage from the Mazzei family's Caggio property in Castellina. Soaring aromatics immediately announce a Sangiovese of real distinction and class. There is something wild and alluring about Ipsus that is hard to describe. It is at once incredibly polished and yet also quite assertive. Crushed flowers, cherry, pomegranate, blood orange, star anise and cinnamon add layers of exoticism as the 2016 opens in the glass. The 2016 is deep, full of character and incredibly persistent. This ambitious new wine from Mazzei is certainly going to be fascinating to follow." Vinous

"The fruit element is pure, evoking black currant and black cherry, matched to a savory side that delivers wild rosemary, iron, tobacco and eucalyptus notes. It's all tied together by vibrant acidity and refined tannins. A compelling marriage of power and finesse." Wine Spectator

"Super perfumed, gorgeous aromas of blackberries, mushrooms and bark with dried flowers and crushed stones. Pine needles and flowers, too. Full-bodied and linear, very tight and long. So polished and intense. Great length. Superb. From the heart of Castellina in Chianti. Try after after 2025, but already showing incredible clarity and focus." James Suckling

    • "Concerto" Rosso Toscana IGT 2018
6 Bottles in OWC

“Concerto” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018 · 6 Bottles in OWC

“Siepi” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018 · Double-MAGNUM in OWC

Siepi is developing more and more into a cult wine that can easily keep up with the very big reds of Tuscany.

About the winemakersCastello di FonterutoliTuscany | Chianti
    Castello di Fonterutoli

The predominantly stony soils have given the wine of the Castello di Fonterutoli the nickname "wine of the stones". Strict yield restrictions and environmentally conscious management ensure that this parallel designation is maintained. The estate is located in the eponymous municipality five kilometres south of Castellina in the Chianti Classico area. The town is said to have played an important role in the creation of the Chianti area. The Castello di Fonterutoli has belonged to the Mazzei family since 1435. Lapo Mazzei was president of the Consorzio del Marchio Storico Chianti Classico (Gallo Nero) for many years. Today the estate is managed by Filippo and Francesco Mazzei with a picturesque view of the Val d'Elsa.

The farm covers a total area of 650 hectares. Of these, 117 hectares are specialized vineyards in excellent locations divided into five areas: Fonterutoli, Siepi, Badiola, Belvedere and Caggio. The vineyard hills reach an altitude between 230 and 500 metres above sea level. The winery has a very traditional approach to vine cultivation, exploitation and ageing.

High quality, a clear concept and professional skill have made the wines of the Castello di Fonterutoli the benchmark for top-class Chianti Classico. Red wines, trimmed for elegance and finesse, are produced here under the guidance of oenologist Carlo Ferrini. Their character as Chianti is preserved. Among the main wines are "Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli" and the cult product "Siepi", which fully lives up to the name "Supertuscan". The avant-garde wine cellar, opened in 2006, has been described by the wine magazine Decanter as "the most impressive of all Chianti". Particularly noteworthy is the barrique cellar with visible rock walls, which can hold up to 3,500 oak barrels. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Mazzei family, who have been involved in viticulture for centuries, is a symbol of Chianti Classico and the oenology of Tuscany ... Uncompromising care of the vineyards is the basis for vigorous, lively reds, which in their style rely on good structuring and fully ripe fruit." Gambero Rosso 2012
