Chianti Classico DOCG 2021
Open-hearted, very appealing bouquet of tart berry fruit, forest floor, bitter almond, blue flowers and grilled herbs. The palate has the typical Sangiovese profile of bright red berries, with wonderfully integrated acidity and freshness. A classic from Castellina in Chianti, rich in finesse every year and unbeatable with white meat dishes and sugos. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red colour. Clear and expressive on the nose, blackberry and redcurrant, followed by some thyme and cloves as well as white pepper and marzipan. Refreshing and lively on the palate, pleasantly savoury, ripe, well-integrated tannins, vibrant acidity, juicy and animating through to the final." Falstaff
"Transparent ruby red colour. Fully ripe fruit with an intense, characteristic, rustic and spicy aroma. Lots of acidity and light tannin after very pure, tangy fruit on the palate. Extremely fresh and quite persistent with a certain fruit fullness. Really very refined and ethereal." Jancis Robinson
"The 2021 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli smells of dark cherry, plum, leather, liquorice, menthol, dried herbs, incense and sage. Supple and expressive, with marvellous depth, the 2021 is a fine edition of pure Chianti Classico." Vinous
"The Chianti Classico Fonterutoli 2021 comes from a vintage that delivered great results throughout the region. It is somewhat darker, stronger and more concentrated than the normal entry-level Chianti Classico. Cherry and dark plum give way to beautiful mineral tones. This added intensity is part of the house style and a little gift for those who appreciate more meat on the Sangiovese bones." Wine Advocate
"Notes of raspberries and cherries with red liquorice, dried orange peel and spices. Medium to full-bodied with a fleshy structure. The tannins are broad and velvety with a juicy, red-fruity mid-palate. Fresh and crisp on the finish." James Suckling

“Ser Lapo” Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2020
With this exceptional Chianti Classico Riserva, the Mazzei family celebrates their famous ancestor Ser Lapo, in whose writings the name "Chianti" is mentioned for the first time. The upper part of the label features a faithful reproduction of one of his writings (from 1398) with beautiful calligraphy. "Do not worry about the cost of this wine, although it was expensive: its quality will make up for it."
Opens with classic aromas of blackberry, cassis and fine violet notes. Warm and full on the palate, firm core of dark sweet fruits, smooth tannins, rich and with elegant acidity. Spicy and long, unmistakably the appetising hint of sage and mint on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo is bright, vibrant and full of energy. Crushed flowers, red-toned fruit, chalk and white pepper abound. As is so often the case, the Ser Lapo is one of the hidden gems in the Mazzei range. Then again, the core of Ser Lapo is sourced from the Caggio property, where the Mazzei family makes their top of the line Gran Selezione Ipsus." Vinous

“Philip” Rosso Toscana IGT 2020
After almost two centuries, it is time to create a "monument" to the enthusiastic grape grower Philip Mazzei (1730-1816). In the form of this single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon, this succeeds extraordinarily well. Elegant deep dark colour, classic aromas, complex fruity-spicy taste, tannin and acidity well proportioned, taut, structured and persistent. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Philip (Cabernet Sauvignon) is a blend from vineyards in Castellina and Maremma. Rich and pliant, the 2020 offers tons of varietal character. Dark plum, menthol, licorice and espresso all build in this supple, resonant red. Attractive floral and spice top notes brighten the finish." Vinous
"A bright, elegant red with aromas of cherries and blackcurrants, with lively acidity and dusty tannins. Packs plenty of fruit, with hints of tobacco and wild herbs, despite the lean profile." Wine Spectator

“Castello Fonterutoli” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2019
Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family has for the first time vinified all three large vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione to reflect the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiola.
Castello di Fonterutoli comes from 11 different plots at an altitude of 420-510 m around the hamlet of Fonterutoli in Castellina in Chianti. It is quasi the "château" and at the same time the oldest cru of the winery and was first produced in 1995 as the predecessor of today's Gran Selezione. Rich colour and a clear scent of blackberries, cherries, violets and flowers, plus some nougat. This full-bodied Castello Fonterutoli impresses with its beguiling extract sweetness and polished tannin. The intense and concentrated taste enchants the senses. The long final is full of elegance. SUPERIORE.DE
"Engaging raspberry and floral bouquet; dynamic evolution on the palate, combining juice and polish, the acidity lively, the tannins tight, elegant finish." Vinum
"Bright, radiant ruby red. Somewhat restrained on the nose, gentle hints of orange zest and raspberries. On the palate juicy and with a red berry fruit core, shows itself elegant and drinky, currently still very young, in the finish delicate pressure with a lot of finesse, salty." Falstaff
"Medium to deep ruby red. Brooding sweet fruit with malt notes and the scent of oak. Fantastic concentration of tangy cherry fruit on the palate. Very long, deep and smooth." Jancis Robinson
"The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is laced with sweet red cherry, tobacco, spices, incense, mint, dried herbs and orange peel. Medium-bodied, with plenty of aromatic drive and energy, the Castello is another fine offering in this Mazzei family range." Vinous
"Fonterutoli is located at the confluence of Castellina, Radda and Vagliagli. Since 2017, the Mazzei family has been producing three different Gran Selezione to highlight the individual communes. The Castello Fonterutoli, which comes from farms in Castellina, shows woody aromas of cedar, cinnamon and cloves. The palate is lush with cherry and plum still wrapped in oak. The tannins are polished and the graininess gives it structure. The finish shows racy acidity, bringing out notes of mint and violets." Decanter
"Packed with fresh cherry, raspberry, blackberry and violet flavors, this red starts out silky before yielding to firm, dusty tannins. Still, this offers nice tension and a lingering aftertaste of pure fruit." Wine Spectator
"The beautiful 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli comes from a special site with silly limestone soils punctuated by lots of stones. The wine is particularly balanced and bright in this vintage, with lots of cherry fruit, gravel, dusty minerals and blue flowers. The tannins are sweet and rich, contributing to an elegant, medium-bodied mouthfeel. The high altitude vineyard sites ensure the freshness of this wine." Wine Advocate
"A top Chianti Classico that smells of dark cherries, rose petals and cedar on the nose and palate. Medium to full-bodied and very structured with lots of tannins. Needs time to mellow. Taste after 2024." James Suckling
"A selection of about 50 plots, a blend of Sangiovese, Colorino, Malvasia Noir, for one of the great labels of Gran Selezione on the market. Notes of black mulberry, hints of clove and turmeric, nuances of ginger. On the palate, juicy-salty, persistent, with fruity-floral hints and great density-crispness." Luca Gardini

"Seems velvety and seductive in style, also finely woven and with polished tannin, joined by sweet fruit and a warming and substantial mouthfeel." Weinwisser
"The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is a powerful, earthy wine. Black cherry, grilled herbs, menthol, liquorice, tobacco and dried herbs form the backbone of this powerful, earthy wine. With time in the glass, this wine opens up beautifully. Pretty floral accents and white pepper lift the finish." Vinous
"Wonderful bouquet of black cherries, herbs and violets, also pepper; exceedingly elegant in the mouth with fine polish and tightly woven tannins, finishes long on raspberry and violet notes, undergrowth and liquorice." Vinum
"The Mazzei 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli offers a rich texture, lots of dark fruit and an overall oaky approach. It finishes softly with cinnamon, baking spice and a sweet note of white chocolate." Wine Advocate
"Attractive aromas of red plums, dried cranberries, spiced citrus peel, red spices and bark. Medium to full-bodied, broad and structured with ripe and well-integrated tannins and juicy fruit. Exciting. Shows notes of rose petals with minerality of crushed rock. Long lasting and lively finish." James Suckling
"Another great Gran Selezione project for Castello di Fonterutoli. Visciola, hints of nettle and undergrowth, a nice iodine note on the finish, dense and compact mouthfeel, salty tannins, finishes with a fruity oily aftertaste. Persistent." Luca Gardini

“Badiòla” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018
Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family has for the first time vinified all three large vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione to reflect the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiòla.
Badiòla is the historic name of a vineyard in the municipality of Radda, whose grapes are vinified separately for the first time by the Mazzei family as Gran Selezione with the 2017 vintage. Bright ruby, a restrained but clear nose of wild berries, blue flowers, undergrowth, and hints of dark pepper. On the palate, Badiòla is masterfully balanced, almost weightless. The very well integrated tannin makes it seem supple from the first to the last glass and impresses with a long finish - its elegance is great! SUPERIORE.DE
"Fruity-spicy on the nose; pithy in the mouth, perfect tannin-acid balance, finishes long on red berry notes. Still needs to mature." Vinum
"Brightening, medium dense ruby. Shows fine notes of strawberry, raspberry and rose petals on the nose, some sour cherry. Fine-meshed tannin, nicely brought out fruit, a little brittle on the back end." Falstaff
"The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badiòla is a bit tight and austere in this vintage. Then again that is the site. Crushed rocks, mint, white flowers and red-toned fruit open over time, but only with great reluctance. The Badiòla is an intriguing wine, to be sure, but it is not especially forthcoming today. Patience is of the essence, as this taut Gran Selezione is going to need at least a few years to unwind." Vinous
"Super elegant nose with red fruits, rose petals, violets, toasted almonds, blood oranges and fresh herbs. Bold palate with full body." Decanter
"Sweet berries on the nose with citrus and cedar undertones. Hints of dried flowers, too. Full-bodied with a tight palate and polished tannins. The wine shows plenty of fruit, cream and cedar undertones. Chewy yet friendly finish." James Suckling
"The Mazzei 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Badiòla offers an extra layer of intensity that is delivered over a medium-rich concentration. With fruit sourced from one of the Mazzei family's historic vineyards, this distinctive wine stands apart in the portfolio thanks to its bright cherry and berry aromas as well as the subtle spice, tar and smoke that fill in the back so seamlessly. This wine should easily hold until the 20-year mark." Wine Advocate
"A true wine gem from the municipality of Radda in Chianti, from Romanesque 'Pieve' of Badiòla. Three Sangiovese biotypes, three from mass selection, the nose is thick and intense, wild berries, hints of marjoram, eucalyptus and peony on the finish. The mouthfeel is taut and compact, with savoury tannins. Dark small fruits reappearing in the aftertaste." Luca Gardini

“Vicoregio 36” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2019
Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family has for the first time vinified all three large vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione to reflect the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiòla.
Vicoregio 36 is the successor to the ambitious Mix 36 and, since 2017, a true Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. As a result of 50 years of research, 36 biotypes of the Sangiovese grape were planted on a sunny plateau near Castelnuova Berardenga, from which this extremely interesting and independent wine was created a few years ago. The overall impression is very balanced and straightforward with hints of red cherries, spices, dried blueberries and tobacco. It is the warmest and most balanced of the three Gran Selezione wines. Its intensity, richness of colour and precise fruit instantly captivate the Sangiovese lover. SUPERIORE.DE
"Raspberry-scented seducer with floral and herbal notes; flattering on the palate, silky tannin, embedded in fine acidity, ends long and fresh. Pleases with its elegance and no-frills style. Among the best cuts of Viennese beef cuisine." Vinum
"Bright ruby red. In the nose initially marked by rich noble wood, then after blood orange and fresh raspberries, pink roses in the finish. Compact and with clear fruit on the palate, shows itself polished and radiant, pithy, minimal afterdrying in the final." Falstaff
"Deep ruby red with orange reflections. Brooding and with the faintest suggestion of gingerbread and sweet oak. In this youthful state, the palate is similar to that of the Castello di Fonterutoli Gran Selezione of the same vintage, but this is slightly richer and with firmer, if polished, tannins. Enormous length. Monumental and far from finished." Jancis Robinson
"Mazzei's expression of the Vagliagli commune comes from a vineyard planted with 36 different Sangiovese biotypes, the result of 50 years of research. At an altitude of 350 metres, it is the lowest of the winery's three Gran Selezione sites and also the most expansive and supple. It leads with mocha, dried cherry and balsam wood and wears its oak well. The purity of the red berries shows on the palate with toasty flavours. This wine is full yet gracefully structured, with appetisingly integrated acidity." Decanter
"This classy red boasts a core of ripe, juicy plum, cherry and blackberry fruit framed by a subtle touch of new oak and a mineral underpinning. Reveals refined tannins, which should come into the fold over the next five to seven years as this integrates fully. Shows terrific balance and length, with finesse and complexity." Wine Spectator
"This is the third vintage in which this wine has the Gran Selezione designation. The fruit comes from an experimental vineyard at an altitude of 350 metres with compact clay soils (with some stones for loosening), good aeration and a dominant southern exposure. The property is 12.5 hectares and was acquired in 1997. Following the graceful 2018 vintage, the Mazzei 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Vicoregio 36 shows medium-bodied concentration and sweet tannins with plenty of dark fruit, spice, scrub and wild mint." Wine Advocate
"A very straightforward and fine Chianti Classico with crisp cherry fruit and a hint of minerals. Medium body. Crisp and lively finish. Closed and dense on the mid palate." James Suckling

"Medium ruby red with orange reflections. The most compact of the winery's three Gran Selezioni. Elegant, soft fruit that is less baroque than elegant. Long, tangy finish of raspberries and cherries with supple but long tannins." Jancis Robinson
"A juicy and ripe wine with freshness and brightness for the Radda zone in Chianti Classico. Medium-bodied. Spicy. Orange peel." James Suckling
"The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Badiòla is a refined and elegant wine with precise aromas of cherry, blackberry, spice, earth and pressed violet. The six-hectare site consists of a mixture of slate Galestro soils and sandstone. The mineral signature is beautiful in this wine." Wine Advocate
"The great Gran Selezione of Mazzei, from three different Sangiovese clones and a mass selection. A wine of great gustatory-olfactory impact, with notes of berry jam, wild mint and gardenia, with iodine sensations. Iodine on the palate too, with a fruity-floral return and flavourful compactness." “Concerto” Rosso Toscana IGT 2020
Concerto was born in 1981, a time of dynamic change in Italian viticulture. The hitherto unused potential was recognised and experiments were carried out with new grape varieties and, for the first time, successfully with international grape varieties. Produced from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Rosso Toscana Concerto was one of the pioneers of the later phenomenon of the Supertoscans and was one of the elite wines of the region for a long time.
Intense, bright ruby red. Rich bouquet of red currant, cherry, spices and a delicate vanilla note. Endless fruit on the palate, dense and full-bodied, velvety tannin in the background and a very discreet acid wire. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2019 Concerto (18.5/20) was already an excellent success last year, and the 2020 now goes one better! It consists of 80 % Sangiovese, matured in large wooden barrels and 20 % Cabernet Sauvignon, which was matured in barriques. Already in colour, the Concerto 2020 is darker than its predecessor. On the nose, it shows a more massive fruit and fullness, with dark berry-cherry aromas, youthful, expansively expansive and fleshy. It also presents as much more open than the reductive 2019 a year ago, with balsamic sweetness and plenty of Amarena accents, dense, fiery and lively on the nose. Full and rich, quite fleshy and compact, it has enormous density and differentiated depth. Its structure and extraction are perfectly balanced, with great juiciness, freshness and intensity. Eternally long, powerful and polished, this terrific Concerto is already accessible and supple. But will increase with maturity." Weinwisser
"Dark ruby red. In the nose very spicy, dark berry, after plums, wild berries, in addition some saddle, pepper, in the finish on ripe Amarena cherries. Tightly woven on the palate with clear fruit and juicy undertones, swings along nicely, crisp tannin, seems nicely balanced and harmonious, juicy again on the final." Falstaff
"A deep, serious, brooding nose, full of dried herbs and scrubland notes with pepper spice and blackcurrants - a savoury expression. High acidity fills the mouth giving succulent and juicy red and black fruit flavours, bright, vibrant and lively. Quite direct right now, all in a straight line, driving from start to finish. This has some nuance from the spiced edges but it's so immediately generous and expansive. Lots of power here, there is concentration and structure, clear depth with a rich appeal. Will be excellent in time." Decanter
"The Mazzei 2020 Concerto di Fonterutoli is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon from a cool vineyard site located at 350 meters in elevation. It is surrounded by thick forests on three sides. The role of the forest especially in the hills of Chianti is becoming ever more appreciated as we face hot summers and climate change. This wine remains focused and tight with wild berry, blackcurrant, grilled herb, spice and dark mineral tones. To the palate, there is plenty of sweet fruit followed by nicely integrated, dry tannins." Wine Advocate
"The 2020 Concerto di Fonterutoli is bright and punchy, with terrific freshness and tons of nuance. Plum, pomegranate, spice, new leather and blood orange are front and center. The 2020 is a gorgeous wine that captures the essence of the house style beautifully. Today, the purity of the fruit really jumps out of the glass. Superb." Vinous

“Badiòla” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2020
Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family vinified all three large vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione for the first time in order to recognise the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiòla.
Badiòla is the historic name of a vineyard in the municipality of Radda, whose grapes have been vinified separately by the Mazzei family as a Gran Selezione since the 2017 vintage. Bright ruby-garnet colour, a restrained yet clear nose of wild berries, blue flowers, undergrowth and hints of dark pepper. On the palate, Badiòla is masterfully balanced, almost weightless. The very well-integrated tannins make it smooth from the first to the last glass and it impresses with its long finish - its elegance is magnificent! SUPERIORE.DE
"Already radiates finesse on the nose and confirms this not only with plenty of fruit, but also with subtle minerality, elegance and appears light-footed and multi-layered in comparison. In the final, the fine race, depth and tannin bite complete the terrificimpression." Weinwisser
"Bright, sparkling ruby red with a subtly brightening rim. Nose with elegant, earthy tones, beetroot, ripe cherry, wild berry fruit and black tea. On the palate with racy, fresh acidity and a red berry centre, plus a fine saltiness." Falstaff
"Spicy and chocolaty with ripe red and dark berries, rose petals and bark undertones. Medium to full-bodied with firm, racy tannins and crisp acidity. Lively fruit character and a linear finish." James Suckling
"The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badiòla is a complex, wonderfully nuanced wine. White pepper, chalk, orange peel and orange zest are woven into a core of vibrant red cherry fruit. This nuanced, earthy Radda Gran Selezione from vineyards 550 metres above sea level has a lot to offer in 2020." Vinous
"Seductive blackberry nose, also lilac and balsamic notes; balanced on the palate, the tannins and acidity in perfect balance, finishes crisp on notes of fresh fruit, also pepper and maquis. Can still age. Convinces with its elegant, Burgundy-like style." Vinum
"This expressive red shows aromas and flavours of cherries, raspberries and flowers, supported by a lively acidity and refined tannins. Intense and resonant with a mineral aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"Oenological jewel from the Romanesque Pieve di Badiòla. Three Sangiovese clones, three from the mass selection, nose with notes of jammy berries, wild mint and gardenia, with iodine sensations. Salty and iodised on the palate, with a fruity-floral finish and great crispness." Luca Gardini

“Vicoregio 36” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2020
Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family vinified all three large vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione for the first time in order to recognise the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiòla.
As a result of 50 years of research, 36 biotypes of the Sangiovese grape were planted on a sunny plateau near Castelnuova Berardenga, from which this extremely interesting and unique wine was created a few years ago. The overall impression is very balanced and straightforward with hints of red cherries, spices, dried blueberries and tobacco. It is the warmest and most balanced of the three Gran Selezione wines. Its intensity, richness of colour and precise fruit immediately captivate Sangiovese lovers. SUPERIORE.DE
"It is archetypal for a Chianti Classico, combining fine fruit with depth and robust, earthy-spicy grip and remaining compact and full-bodied until the long finish." Weinwisser
"Dark, bright ruby red colour. Dark berry and spicy on the nose, with rich precious wood, milk chocolate, fine, resinous tones and a hint of smoke and coconut. Juicy on the palate, with compact tannins and a savoury core, the final is grippy and powerful, the wood has integrated well since the last tasting, powerful finish." Falstaff
"The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vicoregio 36 is a soft, fruity wine that can be drunk now or over the next few years. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherry fruit, candy and sweet floral notes permeate this uncomplicated Gran Selezione. The Vicoregio comes from a relatively cool site in Castelnuovo Berardenga and is the only wine in this range to be aged in oak." Vinous
"Very attractive combination of cherries and lightly toasted oak. A hint of cappuccino. Turns into flowers. Full-bodied with creamy tannins and light-coloured fruit. Polished tannins with a hint of vanilla at the end. Needs time to develop. Try it after 2026." James Suckling
"The Mazzei 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Vicoregio 36 is made from the fruit of an experimental vineyard planted with 36 Sangiovese biotypes. It is characterised by a very linear and concentrated style. This site is particularly rocky with clay-limestone Alberese soils. The ripe fruit of the warm vintage and the lush oak spice give the wine a full-bodied finish. Finally, beautiful mineral notes lend vigour and elegance to the bouquet." Wine Advocate
"This racy red wine is characterised by its lively acidity, which highlights the flavours of cherry, raspberry and iron. Hints of wild herbs, oak spice and tobacco add detail as the wine develops into a long, complex finish that has excellent balance and energy." Wine Spectator
"Exquisite aromas of small fruits, dried roses, spices and tobacco; intriguing structure with sufficient density, but also a great deal of finesse, the tightly woven tannins and acidity in harmony, ends with a long finish. Impeccable Gran Selezione from 36 different Sangiovese biotypes." Vinum

“Concerto 40 anni” Rosso Toscana IGT 2021
"Dark, intense colour. Sweet, fragrant and with fine fruit, the Concerto smells out of the glass and shows a lot of Sangiovese flavour and an infectious sweetness. It does not reach the fullness of the 2020 and overall the aromatics remain a little lighter in tone. With high intensity, the Concerto 2021 is then a little less full in the mouth with excellent extract sweetness. Dense and taut, polished and long, and very straightforwardly structured, with tightly woven, fine tannins. Great, penetrating Concerto with lots of juice, a little wood shines through in the finish." Weinwisser
"The Concerto di Fonterutoli 2021, a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon from Mazzei, is full-bodied and rich from the ground up. Powerful red fruits, blood orange, cedar and spices combine effortlessly with soft, silky tannins to round it all out. Today, Sangiovese is very expressive." Vinous
"It is spicy and lively with a mix of red and dark berries, dried citrus peel, chilli pepper and spicy herbs. Also a hint of bark. Full-bodied with polished tannins and a chalky, powdery texture. The juicy acidity comes through well. Shows depth and concentration. Racy and long. Better from 2026." James Suckling
"The Concerto di Fonterutoli 2021 is a very extract-rich wine that carries its fruit weight over a long and velvety mouthfeel. The wine delivers dark fruits, cherry liqueur, spices and smoked tobacco. This is a modern Tuscan wine with broad shoulders, powerful structure and rich texture. It needs a few more years of bottle age to smooth out the tannins." Wine Advocate
"Sweet, baked red fruits on the nose with aromas of roses and pink flowers and notes of cloves, toast and cinnamon. Smooth and soft in the mouth, rich yet elegant with a supple core of strawberries, cherries and raspberries lifted by high acidity and excellent tannins. Full flavoured with a mineral, ferruginous, saline taste that lingers on the tongue from mid-palate onwards, with tobacco and dried spices contrasting beautifully with the ripe, herbaceous fruit. A truly delicious, mouth-watering, compelling glass of wine. It is juicy and full-bodied. Wonderful with a lingering sense of Italian sunshine and dried scrubland." Decanter

“Castello Fonterutoli” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2019 · MAGNUM in OWC

“Siepi” Rosso Toscana IGT 2020
"This is one of the 50 wines that changed Italian wine culture." Gambero Rosso
Siepi 2020 already convinces at a young age with its volume, fruit and richness. It is made from equal parts Merlot and Sangiovese and both grapes bring their best qualities to the blend. The Sangiovese grape shows a distinct personality with area-specific notes of small berries and spices, and it also offers a wonderfully fresh acidity. The Merlot plays a strong role in the background, adding softness, richness and fullness. Siepi is an intense, punchy wine that has a terrificrange of tension, from its highly attractive extract sweetness to polished tannins into a fresh, spicy finish with an interesting salty note. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Siepi 2020 consists of half Sangiovese and half Merlot. The former is aged in large wooden barrels, the latter in 70 % new barriques. On the nose, the Siepi has a very finely honed and clear Sangiovese fruit, with a purist face and excellent depth. And also in the mouth, the Merlot appears aromatically only slightly present. Rather slender and finesse-rich on the tongue, the Siepi shows itself clearly defined and very differentiatedly elegant." Weinwisser
"Boasts black cherry and blackberry fruit wrapped in a cloak of toasty, resinous oak. Reveals cedar and iron notes that add depth as this builds to the long finish. This opened up after an hour in the glass, showing its polish, yet still needs time to absorb the oak." Wine Spectator
"Dark ruby with a drop of violet. In the nose of rich cherry fruit, blackberries, also of noble chocolate and leather, filigree drawn, exciting. Expressive and radiant on the palate, showing compact, dark berry fruit, plus polished, creamy tannin, without denying its Tuscan roots, grippy and powerful on the finish." Falstaff
"Transparent crimson with a pale rim. Penetrating, ripe aroma, probably due to the Merlot, but without too much sweetness. The palate shows the spiciness and liveliness of the Sangiovese. But these two elements seem already very nicely combined with a light touch of tea. Long. Already a really very nice expression of the fruit of the Tuscan hills. Good balance between freshness and maturity." Jancis Robinson
"The 2020 Siepi is stylish, elegant and highly polished. Dark blue fruits, lavender, new leather, cloves and mocha blend effortlessly. The 2020 is characterised by a precision that is incredibly inviting. Nevertheless, the 2020 is still very young and does not fully express its potential. It simply needs time to develop, but all the elements are there." Vinous
"Dried herbs and sweet spices on the nose, forest notes with blackberry fruit, concentrated and expressive. On the palate, the tannins glide gently over the tongue, giving the sweet strawberry, raspberry and plum fruit time to develop in the mouth, while the acidity provides a pleasant mouthfeel. This wine is very lively and vibrant - it screams loudly for its energy. It feels extremely good, with clear definition, finesse and balance. Such a gorgeous fruit profile, the high toned strawberry and cherry, bright and penetrating but also round and generous with tobacco and wood nuances. The fine but present tannins are very present and give grip. All in all, an exceptionally beautiful wine. I love it. It offers immediate and youthful pleasure, but it will continue to age well." Decanter
"Graphite and pencil come through, along with violets and blackberries. Also some tar and asphalt. Full-bodied but creamy and crisp, with agile liveliness that lasts for minutes. Fabulous length. Already drinkable, but it will age for decades to come." James Suckling

"Velvety and seductive in its style, finely woven and with polished tannins, accompanied by sweet fruit and a warm and full-bodied mouthfeel." Weinwisser
"Bright ruby red with a subtly brightening rim. Fragrant and clear nose of fresh cherries, ripe raspberries, light spice, precious wood, sealing wax. With expressive fruit on the palate, juicy tannins and harmonious drinking flow, clean, precise, with a pleasant length." Falstaff
"Wonderful bouquet of black cherries, herbs and violets, also pepper; extremely elegant in the mouth with a fine finish and tightly woven tannins, ends long on raspberry and violet notes, undergrowth and liquorice." Vinum
"The Mazzei 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli offers a rich texture, lots of dark fruit and an oak-accentuated overall approach. It finishes gently with cinnamon, baking spice and a sweet note of white chocolate." Wine Advocate
"Attractive aromas of red plums, dried cranberries, flavoured citrus peel, red spices and bark. Medium to full-bodied, broad and structured with ripe and well-integrated tannins and juicy fruit. Exciting. Shows notes of rose petals with crushed rock minerality. Long-lasting and lively finish." James Suckling
"Another great Gran Selezione project for Castello di Fonterutoli. Visciola, a hint of nettle and undergrowth, a nice iodine note on the finish, dense and compact mouthfeel, salty tannins, finish with a fruity and oily aftertaste. Persistent." Luca Gardini

“Siepi” Rosso Toscana IGT 2021
Mazzei's top wine Siepi is not only an outstanding Tuscan wine every year, but also a 6-hectare vineyard surrounded by dense oak forests with an ideal altitude and a unique climate. Sunlight is optimal throughout the day and a constant breeze from the west prevents excessive heat and creates a mild Mediterranean climate. The oak forests also provide an ideal protective barrier against extreme weather situations. Rocky soils of marl, limestone and clay from the Pliocene provide a special balance of elements in this geological complex.
The Siepi's greatest strength each year is its keen sense of integration and harmony, and this excellent 2021 vintage is no exception. On the nose, it is fresh and lively with lots of wild cherry, spices, wild rose, lilac and lavender. In the drink, it delights with soft fruit and delicate spice and shows an increasingly fluid personality in the glass, gradually revealing a beautiful succession of background aromas. The 2021 edition is already very elegant, even polished, but Siepi connoisseurs know that at least five more years of careful bottle ageing are needed before this monumental red begins to show its true greatness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Massive, viscous colour. Youthful, the Siepi 2021 smells of fine, fresh wood, offensive and brash, with fleshy intensity and limited depth. Its actual aromatics do not really come through yet. Full and melting, round and lush, sweet and woody, it also appears in the mouth. It is less dense in its core aromas and lives more from its meltingly lively flow, which comes through clearly and straightforwardly." Weinwisser
"The 2021 Siepi opens with sweet fruit nuances of cooked cherry, blackberry jam, cinnamon and nutmeg. This full-bodied wine is supple and very soft in the mouthfeel, and its flavour profile is extensive and all-encompassing. This wine is balanced and seamless, and the 2021 vintage is certainly one of the best editions of Siepi we have seen to date." Wine Advocate
"The 2021 Siepi is impressive. Blue/purple fruits, lavender, spices, menthol and mocha are beautifully balanced. This lush, juicy blend of Sangiovese and Merlot is a real charmer, as it so often is. The 2021 is exceptionally elegant and polished, certainly one of the best recent editions. That said, I think the Siepi would benefit from longer ageing in wood or in the glass, as it is too early to the market for a wine of its size and potential." Vinous
"Intense blackcurrant on the nose, baked and ripe, so expressive and inviting with little hints of liquorice and tar. Supple, generous, juicy and bright, this 50/50 Sangiovese Merlot is so well crafted and harmonious - rich, broad and full in the mouth, it runs with life and energy and such underlying power. You can feel the intensity and the sculpting that is on display. This wine is no wallflower, but it is so neat and beautifully presented. I love the tannins, massive but controlled and a perfect counterpart to the fresh and ripe red and black fruits with black pepper, tar, tobacco and bitter orange and soft floral notes. The brightness is a great match for the depth and complexity delivered by a nuanced glass of wine that has so much to say. I love the tannins and the sense of direction and confidence. It's still in its brooding, showy, youthful phase with lots of warmth and spice, but it's a beauty." Decanter
"An opulent yet exciting young red wine with the character of blackberries, violets and black olive skin. Full-bodied. But with so much energy and focus. Lasts for minutes. Best opened after 2028." James Suckling

The very well integrated tannin makes it seem supple from the first to the last glass and impresses with a long finish - its elegance is magnificent!

“Vicoregio 36” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2019 · MAGNUM in OWC

"Homely bouquet of wild berries, spices and tobacco; harmonious on the palate, fine-grained tannins, accentuated acidity, stylish finish on notes of maraschino cherries and pepper." Vinum
Iodine on the palate too, with a fruity-floral return and flavourful compactness." The predominantly stony soils have given the wine of the Castello di Fonterutoli the nickname "wine of the stones". Strict yield restrictions and environmentally conscious management ensure that this parallel designation is maintained. The estate is located in the eponymous municipality five kilometres south of Castellina in the Chianti Classico area. The town is said to have played an important role in the creation of the Chianti area. The Castello di Fonterutoli has belonged to the Mazzei family since 1435. Lapo Mazzei was president of the Consorzio del Marchio Storico Chianti Classico (Gallo Nero) for many years. Today the estate is managed by Filippo and Francesco Mazzei with a picturesque view of the Val d'Elsa.
The farm covers a total area of 650 hectares. Of these, 117 hectares are specialized vineyards in excellent locations divided into five areas: Fonterutoli, Siepi, Badiola, Belvedere and Caggio. The vineyard hills reach an altitude between 230 and 500 metres above sea level. The winery has a very traditional approach to vine cultivation, exploitation and ageing.
High quality, a clear concept and professional skill have made the wines of the Castello di Fonterutoli the benchmark for top-class Chianti Classico. Red wines, trimmed for elegance and finesse, are produced here under the guidance of oenologist Carlo Ferrini. Their character as Chianti is preserved. Among the main wines are "Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli" and the cult product "Siepi", which fully lives up to the name "Supertuscan". The avant-garde wine cellar, opened in 2006, has been described by the wine magazine Decanter as "the most impressive of all Chianti". Particularly noteworthy is the barrique cellar with visible rock walls, which can hold up to 3,500 oak barrels. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Mazzei family, who have been involved in viticulture for centuries, is a symbol of Chianti Classico and the oenology of Tuscany ... Uncompromising care of the vineyards is the basis for vigorous, lively reds, which in their style rely on good structuring and fully ripe fruit." Gambero Rosso 2012
