    • "Irisse" Vermentino Montecucco DOC 2018 (BIO)

“Irisse” Vermentino Montecucco DOC 2018 (BIO)

Bright yellow organic Vermentino with a small amount of Grechetto that comes from the Barberani estate in Umbria. Consultant Maurizio Castelli thus creates this splendid white from the Tuscan coast from traditional, local blending according to historical models and always harvests the grapes rather late. A bright nose of apple, pear, flint and some exoticism. Complex and full on the palate, the rich taste is accompanied by an invigorating, fresh acidity until the long final. SUPERIORE.DE

"Vermentino is undoubtedly the boom variety on the Tuscan coast: No other grape has been planted as much as this one during the past few years. One of the best Vermentini in Tuscany comes from Montecucco: Especially with volcanic-mineral soils, the grape variety forms a perfect symbiosis and exudes - like in this wine from Colle Massari - aromas of exotic fruits and blossoms; the texture on the palate is pithy-salty, the acidity is invigorating, the final is long. Gains even more complexity with age. Taste!" Vinum

"Inviting, of graphite, flint, salted lemons, candied grapefruit, multilayered. Opens with nutty flavors, nice richness, elegant and compact, long, slightly salty finish, hits crosswise in style." Falstaff

Contrada Rampante with a fine bouquet of dark red cherries, flowers, mint and liquorice. Fresh and lively on the palate, with a memorable blend of ethereal sweetness, filigree acidity and an interesting salt note. A contemplative drop that requires a certain amount of experience and patience to be fully discovered. Pre-Phylloxera = from root true vines! SUPERIORE.DE

"Promising scent of cherries and macchia; precise course with notes of berries, sprays with minerality. Beautiful food companion." Vinum

"Sparkling ruby garnet with bright rim. Attractive nose of ripe cherries and blackberries, with rhubarb. "Fabric, dense-meshed tannin, builds up in many layers, a little rough in the finale. Falstaff

"Pale ruby. Distinct, heady cherry nose. Supple and elegant yet intensely flavoured and with fine, long tannins. Perfumed, long, sweet cherry finish." Jancis Robinson

"Citrus peel acidity enlivens the dried cherry and cranberry fruit flavors of this balanced, medium-bodied red, underscored by a rich vein of tarry mineral and wild herb notes. Creamy tannins firm the lingering finish." Wine Spectator

"Bright red. Reticent aromas of red cherry, Oriental spices, roses, plum nectar and soy sauce on the brooding nose. Floral and fresh in the mouth, with hints of Oriental spices and tobacco complicating ripe, thick plum and cherry flavors. Less immediately fruity and more tannic than the Santo Spirito, as it should be given the characteristics of these two crus. The finish is long, juicy and a touch austere for its current tannic clout. Needs time." Vinous

"The 2016 Etna Rosso Contrada Rampante shows girth and power to the mid-palate. This is a dense and fleshed-out red wine from Etna made with fruit from 90-year-old vines. However, like other expressions from this vintage, I found there to be a lot of immediate intensity up front, with less persistence and fiber in the long run. This seems to be a shared characteristic of 2016. Some 5,000 bottles were made." Robert Parker

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG 2016

Ruby red with garnet glints. Boscarelli's Riserva exudes a wonderful scent of herbs and cherries. On the palate juicy, dense and compact, with robust tannins and fine acidity. Long, seductive and fruity the final. SUPERIORE.DE

"Restrained notes of stone fruit and leather; the tannins full of polish and finesse, good course, finely spicy final. To wild fowl with polenta." Vinum

"The 2016 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva is based on Sangiovese but sees a tiny bit of Colorino added to the blend. Aged longer than a classic Vino Nobile, this Riserva is elegant and fine. The primary fruit is neatly folded into the wine's savory aromas of spice, leather and toasted nut. The bouquet is on the neutral side, but the basics are all there. Ultimately, you get good balance here and a well-rounded Tuscan red that is well suited to roasted lamb or pork." Robert Parker

"Spicy aromas of white pepper and star anise mingle with camphor and blue flower. Savory and balanced, the taut palate has finesse and surprising freshness for the vintage, showcasing Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, espresso and licorice. • "Piastraia" Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2017

      “Piastraia” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2017

Piastraia fully corresponds to the classic image of a great Bolgheri Rosso Superiore. Made from a quarter each of Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, it fills the glass with its intense bouquet of fruit and a hint of leather aromas. Powerful, concentrated and pure taste. SUPERIORE.DE

"Very coherent wine of Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese; multi-faceted bouquet of wild berries, licorice and dried flowers; grippy attack, the fine-grained tannins in perfect balance with the acidity, the finish long and linear. Also very successful in this warm vintage." Vinum

"Rich garnet. Very spicy nose, underpinned with green pepper and light leather, lush cherry fruit, some plum, then chalky tones and ripe cassis again, layered and rich. Equally full-bodied on the palate, albeit with a fine drinking flow, compact, tightly woven tannin gives support, still young, very good foresight." Falstaff

"Smooth, this evokes black cherry and blackberry flavors gently singed by earth and spice flavors. Light tannins gird the finish, with a bittersweet chocolate feel." Wine Spectator

"The 2017 Piastraia is a super-expressive wine in this range that will drink well right out of the gate. Ripe red/purplish fruit, sweet spice and floral notes are all wrapped together in this attractive, mid-weight wine. Time in the glass brings out an attractive, bright upper register, while silky tannins add quite a bit of appeal." Vinous

"The Michele Satta 2017 Bolgheri Superiore Piastraia offers intensity and bold fruit with plenty of rich blackberry, dried cherry and toasted spice. The is a full and generous wine from a hot vintage that does not hold back in term of fruit density or intensity. It would welcome some pork-filled ravioli. The soft tannins add to the wine's balanced full-bodied approach." Robert Parker

"A full, rich red with beautiful softness and balance. It’s impressively tight and focused with polish and beauty. Layered and bright. Give this some time to come together, but very well done for the vintage. Better after 2022." James Suckling

    • "Guidalberto" Toscana IGT 2017

      “Guidalberto” Toscana IGT 2017

Guidalberto has not been in the shadow of his "super-father" Sassicaia for a long time. Since he is vinified from his own vineyards, most of which also grow in the monopollage Sassicaia DOC, he has grown beyond himself. Spicy and earthy bouquet with hints of tobacco, clove and lavender, dense and juicy on the palate with fresh red and black berry fruit. The tannins are well dosed and the finish is complex with a majestic elegance, which becomes even more refined with the years of bottle maturity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Playful spicy-fruity flower; pithy on the palate with firm tannins, the reverberation of rich notes of black cherries and bitter almonds. A refined second wine from the Sassicaia producer." Vinum

"Deep black-purple. Opulent, plum, cassis and some fresh earth. Clove, cinnamon and some toasted almond oak. Much fuller-bodied than the Le Difese, with ripe plum and cassis fruit. Plenty of polish here, though pretty embryonic in form. Very fine-grained tannins, though not the greatest density of them. The fruit slips away quite quickly, but there’s a long line of spice and savouriness that does come through. Perhaps once bottled, the fruit will hold through as far too." Jancis Robinson

"The 2017 Guidalberto is a stellar wine. Rich, ample and resonant, the 2017 possesses superb depth and textural richness, both signatures of this warm, dry vintage. I suppose in the most technical sense, the 2017 is not the last word on complexity. But it is supremely delicious, it is that kind of wine opened and finished quickly - and of course, the ultimate goal of a wine is to deliver pleasure. The 2017 Guidalberto hits it out of the park on that level." VINOUS

"A youthful, sinewy red, with plum, black cherry, cedar and spice flavors wrapped in a thick texture and mouthcoating tannins. Stays vivid and long on the finish, where the sweet, ripe fruit prevails." Wine Spectator

"A blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the 2017 Guidalberto appeals to the more informal side of sophisticated drinking. By that I mean it makes a great choice at lunch or for family dinners. Despite the accessibility and dense concentration of the fruit, especially evident in a warm vintage such as this, the wine's pedigree is evident in terms of the careful management of the structure and acidity. My samples were a little closed at first and needed some extra coaxing. Once open, the wine shows the dark fruit and exuberance of this hot vintage in Tuscany." Robert Parker

"Subtle aromas of cedar, cassis, tobacco and a whiff of camphor slowly take shape in the glass. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, the tightly knit, elegant palate delivers dried black cherry, red currant, blood orange and licorice while fine-grained tannins provide tight support. It closes on a coffee-bean note." Wine Enthusiast

"Fresh herbs, cedar, black raspberries, orange peel and citrus. Very balanced and focused on the palate, thanks to cutting acidity, but with firm, chewy tannins that envelop a plethora of red fruit." James Suckling

“Sotto Casa” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG 2015

The Nobile Riserva, a cru from the historic Sotto Casa vineyard, deserves a place in the best list. With delicate aromas of cherries and spices, it sets the mood for intense, tasty drinking pleasure. A strong, elegant representative of its kind with well-matured fruit in the final and a charming portion of saltiness in the aftertaste. SUPERIORE.DE

"Charismatic nose with fruit and spice; tight body, elegant in every detail, the fine-grained tannins skillfully placed, flattering acidity, the final fruity and long. Skillful interpretation of the vintage." Vinum

"Black cherries, walnuts and some hazelnut and sandalwood undertones. Medium body, firm and creamy tannins and a succulent finish. Tile and brick undertones to the pretty fruit." James Suckling

"Wild herb and loamy earth notes wrap around a core of plum flavors in this muscular red. Iron, sanguine and spice accents add depth as this plays out on the firm, chewy finish. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon." Wine Spectator

"Luca de Ferrari's 2015 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva Sotto Casa draws its fruit from a flat piece of land on the little road that leads to Boscarelli's main residence. Sotto casa means "in front of the house" in Italian. Like many of these samples from Montepulciano, the 2015 vintage delivers more intensity and latitude compared to the 2016 vintage that generally appears more vertical and sharp. There is more meat on the bones in the sunny 2015 vintage, resulting in wines that are redolent of dark cherry, dried blackberry, spice and earth." Robert Parker

    • "Castello Fonterutoli" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

“Castello Fonterutoli” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of the Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family has for the first time vinified all three major vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, to take into account the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiola.

Castello di Fonterutoli originates from 11 different plots of land at an altitude of 420-510 metres around the hamlet of Fonterutoli in Castellina in Chianti. It is virtually the "Château" and at the same time the oldest cru of the estate and was first produced in 1995 as the predecessor of today's Gran Selezione. Rich in colour and with a clear aroma of blackberries, cherries, violets and flowers, with a touch of nougat. This full-bodied Castello Fonterutoli captivates with its beguiling extract sweetness and the polished tannin. The intensive and concentrated taste ensnares the senses. The long final is full of elegance. SUPERIORE.DE

"From the vineyards around the Castello at 470 meters: cherry fragrant, a hint of pepper, also herbal notes characterize this wine; robust in the mouth, the tannins well integrated, lively acidity, the final harmonious and balanced. To a roast beef with chanterelles." Vinum

"The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is bright, floral and super-expressive. Sweet red berry fruit and floral accents give the 2017 much of its up-front appeal. I would prefer to drink the 2017 over the next decade or so. This is an especially gracious, refined Gran Selezione from high altitude vineyards surrounding the winery." Vinous

"Lots of ripe fruit with walnuts, tile, dried berries and chocolate powder. Full-bodied, velvety and chewy. This is a very powerful and structured Chianti Classico that will rival many top Brunellos." James Suckling

"Intense, inky and demonstrating great focus, with floral lift to a nose of blueberry, cherry, mint and forest floor. To taste it's rich and crisp, with fine-grained tannins framing crunchy fruit, mushrooms, tar and graphite." Decanter

"The Mazzei 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is Sangiovese with a tiny component of Malvasia Nera. The wine is elegantly streamlined and subtle—in fact, more so than I would have expected from this largely opulent and exuberant vintage. The bouquet is both floral and fruity with wild berry, rose hip, lavender and cassis. These aromas are central to the Sangiovese playlist. This wine delivers on all the fundamental elements, although I feel that we got a little more depth and delineation in the previous, cooler-vintage release. The tannins are silky and elegant." • "Rosso del Conte" Sicilia Contea di Sclafani DOC 2014

“Rosso del Conte” Sicilia Contea di Sclafani DOC 2014

Ruby red, with a fine cherry fragrance, in which there are also hints of nuts and forest fruits, vanilla, cinnamon, sage and tobacco. Concentrated, rich taste with harmonious tannins and long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"With this vintage, the grapes of Rosso del Conte were once again exclusively harvested in the vineyard San Lucio. Spicy and fresh nose with notes of berries and flowers, flanked by invigorating herbal and pepper aromas; well-balanced, perfectly integrated tannins, velvety and long. Of surprising finesse." Vinum

"Sparkling ruby. Crisp, appealing nose with notes of cardamom and bay leaf, then blackberry and blueberry. On the palate, dense tannins, lots of fresh fruit, spicy final." Falstaff

"This is the 39th edition of this iconic red wine from Sicily. The 2014 Sicilia Contea di Sclafani Rosso del Conte Tenuta Regaleali reveals large-scale intensity with a dark and concentrated core. The bouquet delivers black fruit, balsam herb, cola, grilled herb and black olive. The wine is already very open, expressive and beautiful at this young stage in its evolution. The wine ages in new barrique for 18 months." Robert Parker

"Deep ruby. Precise, enticing aromas of raspberry, graphite, chestnut, herbs and smoky minerality. Sweet on entry, then juicy and sharply chiseled in the middle, with an austere quality to the raspberry and floral flavors. Finishes sappy and mouthcoating, with penetrating acidity giving this youthfully smooth red a classic mouthfeel." Vinous

"This has a crazy nose with notes of dried bay leaf, Thai basil, sage and thyme. Beneath the herbs are red peppers, blackcurrants, crushed stones, violets and blueberries. The blue-fruit and fascinating, herbal flavors permeate through layered tannins and mineral acidity right up to the long, bright finish. Once again, this breaks the boundaries for nero d’avola." • Brunello di Montalcino "Pelagrilli" DOCG 2014

Brunello di Montalcino “Pelagrilli” DOCG 2014

With aromas of dark cherry, plum, smoke and spices, lush, rich and structured on the palate, the 2014 vintage, produced only in small quantities, shows its remarkable personality. SUPERIORE.DE

"Notes of cherries, macchia, also pepper and leather notes; stately construction with robust tannins, the finish harmonious, full of juice and strength and great length. Also in 2014 an excellently manufactured and extremely complex Annata by Giancarlo Pacenti." Vinum

"Bright, rich ruby garnet. Clear and catchy nose, smells intensely of ripe plums and dark cherries, some macchia herbs in the background. On the palate it shows a lot of juicy, ripe fruit, blackberries and raspberries, appealing density, unfolds with fine-meshed tannin, firm pressure in the final". Falstaff

"This red shows complexity and depth to the plum, cherry, almond, graphite and tobacco flavors. Offers good grip and fine balance overall. Firms up on the finish, but lingers nicely." Wine Spectator

"The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli is a mid-weight effort with a bouquet that spans a wide breadth with dark fruit notes followed by spice, tobacco and camphor ash. Those aromas are layered and pleasantly complex. The house style always prizes precision, fruit ripeness and well-managed tannins. All of those qualities apply here." Robert Parker

"Underbrush, camphor, tobacco and oak aromas mingle with wild berry. On the linear full-bodied palate, fine-grained polished tannins and bright acidity support Marasca cherry, raspberry, baking spice and espresso." Wine Enthusiast

"Vivid ruby-red. Clean fresh notes of redcurrant, balsamic oils, flint and violet on the nose and in the mouth. Vibrant and juicy, with a very lithe mouthfeel, excellent clarity and cut and a long finish." Vinous

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

Brunello di Montalcino from San Felice in a dense garnet red colour and with a fragrant bouquet of black fruits, espresso, grilled meat and Asian spice aromas. Viscous and concentrated on the palate, yet surprisingly accessible in taste for such a young and powerful Brunello. Exceptionally good! SUPERIORE.DE

"Charismatic notes of stone fruit, flowers, also herbs; juicy in the mouth, the tannins fine-grained but noticeable, the final well balanced. Convinces with power and solid fruit." Vinum

"Intense, rich ruby red with an opaque core. Hearty nose of perfectly ripened cherries and plums, delicate hints of porcini mushrooms, light spice. On the palate compact and grippy, shows dense body, builds up in many layers, in the aftertaste then clearly draining overhang." Falstaff

"Good deep, lively red. Expressive, complex nose offers blueberry, strawberry, cinnamon, sassafras, old rare leather and iron. Then similarly complex on the supple palate, but with good energy and focus for such an easygoing, broad wine. The notes of red fruit and sweet spices linger nicely on the savory finish." Vinous

"The core of cherry and plum flavors is shaded by tobacco, spice and woodsy notes in this firm, dry red. Exhibits a Mediterranean feel, with wild herb and sun-baked loam accents on the finish." Wine Spectator

"Campogiovanni is an estate run by San Felice in Chianti Classico, and its 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Campogiovanni is a lovely, dark and savory wine to serve with a platter of fatty charcuterie and aged tomme cheese. The bouquet is elegant and linear, showing a pretty ensemble of dark fruit, cassis and dried cherry. This vintage is particularly well balanced, with soft spice and crisp acidity competing for your attention and keeping things bright and interesting." Robert Parker

    • Brunello di Montalcino "Poggio alle Mura" DOCG 2012

Brunello di Montalcino “Poggio alle Mura” DOCG 2012

Of great substance and seductive softness, balance and fruitiness, Poggio alle Mura 2012 shows its best side. Ruby with violet reflections, the fragrance elegant, concentrated and bodily. Great potential for maturity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Fresh berry bouquet, sandalwood and leather notes; supple attack, pithy, tannins and acidity well balanced, solid fruit finish, slightly woodsy. Vinum

"Maturing ruby with bricky rim. Big nose with hints of fruit cake and minerals. Sweet palate tightly packed with tannins. The rich fruit closes up on the finish, and the tannins take centre ground at the moment." Jancis Robinson

"Plummy aromas mix in the glass with whiffs of pressed blue flower, vanilla and mocha. The taut structured palate offers dried black cherry, coconut, licorice, espresso and black pepper while firm fine-grained tannins provide the framework. A note of pipe tobacco closes the tight finish. Give it a few more years to unwind and fully develop." Wine Enthusiast

"A dense, burly style, displaying cherry, iron, leather, earth, tobacco and spice flavors. Unyielding and compact now, yet also complex and long." Wine Spectator

"Very ripe and dense with lots of dried-fruit, spice and cedar character. Some cigar box, too. Full-bodied, velvety and rich. Powerful. Give it two to three years of bottle age." James Suckling

"Bright and generous, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura opens to a darkly concentrated appearance and bold aromatic intensity. The wine is forthcoming and immediate in appeal. The bouquet is redolent of blackberry, cherry confit, exotic spice, cola and dark chewing tobacco. The mouthfeel shows a higher degree of tannic astringency, however that may come from the oak. Poggio alle Mura sees up to 80% aged in barrique for two years and the rest in botte grand. I'd suggest giving it a few more years to let that firmness subside and soften." Robert Parker

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012

Brunello 2012 by Mastrojanni seduces with beautiful charisma, intensity and finesse. Characterful bouquet of sweet cherries, Mediterranean herbs, smoke and tobacco. The splendid fruit and the tightly woven tannins are carried by a light acidity. Very good storage potential. SUPERIORE.DE

"A multi-facetted nose of plums, leather and tobacco; juicy in the mouth, the acidity perceptible, the tannin well integrated, racy and powerful, without forgetting the finesse." Vinum

"A very typical Brunello with berry and tobacco character plus hints of cedar. Full-bodied, chewy and tannic. Needs time to soften and come together. Savory wine." James Suckling

"Mid ruby with bright bricky rim. Open, red-fruit nose and solid fruit palate. Grainy tannins that are a little demanding right now. Building up in complexity on the finish." Jancis Robinson

"Beautifully saturated and dark, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino offers a distinctively sophisticated personality. There's an air of nobility that is natural to Brunello, but that comes in limited supply in this warm vintage. You definitely get it here. The wine's bouquet offers a compelling medley of dark fruit tones that shift into savory spicy and balsam herb. Those automatic transitions are smooth and seamless. Another nice quality of the wine is that no one element overpowers or overshadows the other. It offers a great sense of balance. This wine has many cards to play and I am confident it will play them well over the next ten years of its evolution." Robert Parker

"Luminous red. Highly complex nose offers aromas of red cherry, raspberry, flint and violet, plus a touch of beef bouillon; this is a candidate for the most complex nose of the vintage. Then textbook Sangiovese flavors of flinty red cherries, licorice and minerals. Long and clean on the perfumed, highly mineral finish." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

La Gerla's highly charming Brunello from the dream year 2015 shines in a wonderfully intense ruby red. A dense and at the same time clear cherry nose, underlaid with blackberry, on the palate it seriously displays its great elegance, underpinned by polished tannin, which leads into an almost endlessly long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intriguing bouquet with notes of cherries and herbs; excellent structure, acidity and long-lasting tannins in perfect harmony, lots of smoothness and finesse, fresh and expansive at the same time." Vinum

"Lots of raspberry coulis, dried redcurrants and red-plum compote here. The medium-to full-bodied palate has fleshy and succulent appeal with juicy tannins and a fruit-forward finish." James Suckling

"Black cherry and black currant fruit is accented by tobacco, earth and mineral flavors in this sleek yet dense red. Balsamic elements of juniper, thyme and olive add depth as this cruises to a long finish. The potential lies in the excellent length." Wine Spectator

"I tasted the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino after tasting the other samples from La Gerla, and it's amazing how clearly and convincingly that brawny Brunello character comes through. This is a robust and precise wine that shows dark berry fruit, red currant, spice, licorice and grilled herb. I love the way that all that beautiful Sangiovese intensity comes together with immediate focus and clarity." Robert Parker

    • Barbaresco Pora Riserva DOCG 2014

      Barbaresco Pora Riserva DOCG 2014

Pora overwhelms with incredible complexity and a variety of aromas ranging from raspberries and liquorice to dried flowers, spices and white truffles. On the palate, Pora Noblesse offers a certain noblesse and seriousness before it opens with bite and juiciness and ends velvety wide. SUPERIORE.DE

"Promising scent of stone fruit, leather and tobacco; juicy in the mouth, the acidity perceptible, the tannin well integrated, racy and powerful, yet rich in finesse. To saddle of venison." Vinum

"Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Sweet, peppery raspberry nose with hints of strawberry jam. Clean-cut raspberry palate with plenty of acidity, but the fragrant fruit follows through. Fine layer of sandy tannins that become more prominent on the finish." Jancis Robinson

"I had tasted this vintage last year as a barrel sample. Now a fully complete wine, the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Pora did not disappoint, and even jumped up a few points. The Riserva Pora opens to dark fruit intensity with a slightly more accessible quality. Those lovely floral tones of lavender and violet are ever present. After having spent three years in oak and another year in the bottle, this wine offers a looser mouthfeel in terms of tannic structure, making it a bit more open and immediate in personality. You could uncork this bottle in 2020 if you just can't wait, but ideally, it is meant for the longer haul." Robert Parker

"Although Pora is a relatively low-elevation site and can produce broad wines, Produttori's growers own almost half the cru, so they can select the best grapes for this Riserva. It's beautifully perfumed, with pure raspberry fruit. The palate is streamlined and poised, with a sleek texture and a remarkable purity of flavour, yet it doesn't lack structure and its fine acidity gives it drive and persistence." Decanter

"Round and supple, exuding cherry, berry, licorice, eucalyptus and tar flavors. Harmonious and well-built, with a long aftertaste of menthol." Wine Spectator

"The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is a dark, sensual beauty. Deeply spiced and balsamic, with tremendous textural richness, the Pora is utterly beguiling. I can't remember a Pora with this much depth, textural resonance and brooding intensity. The 2014 needs at least a few years to be at its best, but it is superb even in the early going. I won't be surprised if the 2014 turns out to be better than this note suggests." Antonio Galloni

      “Rovittello” Rosso Etna DOC 2014

Fascinating the Rovittello from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio with an intense fragrance of ripe raspberries. In the background spicy notes, on the palate with a lot of sweet fruit melt. Taut, gripping tannins, long and powerful. SUPERIORE.DE

"The grapes for this classic are harvested at the end of October, it has a fragrance of red berries and violets; skilfully balanced on the palate, with a beautiful finish and firm tannins. Precise making with an elegantly spicy berry finish." Vinum

"The 2014 Etna Rosso Rovittello was going through a phase in which it was slightly shut down when I tasted it. This Etna field blend of 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% Nerello Cappuccio is fermented in stainless steel with the ambient yeast and aged in large oak casks for 20 months. Fruit comes from a single vineyard on the east side of the volcano at 750 meters above sea level. The vines are planted on their original root stock. This precious wine offers an elegantly slimmed-down mouthfeel with polished tannins and fresh acidity. Wild cherry, licorice, tar and smoke appear on the close." Robert Parker

"The well-established Benanti estate produces a wide range of wines, but this single-vineyard red is one of the best. The mostly centenarian vines lie on the northern slopes of Etna. The nose is vibrant and minty, with crunchy raspberry aromas. It’s intense and very concentrated, with robust tannins that don’t obscure the fine texture. Has energy and drive, with very good length." Decanter

"Deep vivid red. Brooding aromas and flavors hint at pencil shavings, red currant jelly, red cherry nectar, yellow flowers, coffee and herbs. Dense and tactile but also very fruity in the mouth, expressing a noteworthy steely quality. In fact, much more steely than the 2014 Serra della Contessa, and so less immediately juicy/fruity but rather more taut and classically austere at this present time of development. Ought to age splendidly. From very old vines grown at 750 meters above sea level on the northern slopes of Etna." Vinous

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

Bright ruby red. Opulent and animating aroma of red berries, coffee and herbs. Dense, with a fine extract sweetness and great richness, with a fine salty component in contrast to the aromas of red fruits. The 2015 edition is a beautiful interpretation of the grape variety and is characterised by a lively drinking flow. The full, round fruit is always present, in the long final an animating, peppery spice surprises. SUPERIORE.DE

"Raspberry-fragrant, discreet herbal aroma; extremely polished texture, the tannins robust, has juice and melt until the long finish. Elegant, with good length and yet also character. Excellent food companion." Vinum

"Tasted blind. Concentrated mid ruby. Firm cherry nose. Richness and depth on the palate and at the same time still compact. Perfect balance on the palate with fine, long, powdery tannins. Real fireworks still to come." Jancis Robinson

"A serious, brooding red, with ripe cherry and strawberry flavors offsetting the beefy tannins. Loam, iron and almond notes chime in. Balanced and long overall." Wine Spectator

"The Lisini 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows muscle and brawn, filling out its full-bodied frame with plenty of dark fruit, spice, tar and smoke. If you like a more concentrated style of Sangiovese, this is your wine. It offers seamless harmony and sun-drenched intensity that all work very nicely in this classic and warm vintage. You can wait, or drink it in the near-term with a rack of lamb." Robert Parker

"With vineyards between Sant'Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell'Abate on the inner edge of the Sesta district, Lisini's vineyards are cleansed by constant breezes from the Tuscan Coast. Stony soils with an important underpinning of limestone as well as elevations over 300 metres help preserve freshness in their wines. The 2015 is beautifully fragrant, almost exotic in character. Plump red fruit and sweet summer herbs fill the mouth but rather than being heavy, this is poised and transparent. Ample powdery tannins are fine and lead to a tangy marine finish." Decanter

    • "Costa Grande" Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2016

“Costa Grande” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2016

A little of everything, but never too much of a good thing. One of the most complex Nobiles we have ever tasted. Delicate red fruits with a pinch of sweetness and floral aroma, underlaid with a little tobacco. Clear cherry flavors on the palate, plus wonderful spice with again that subtle sweetness in the background. A finesse-rich and harmonious final makes you want to drink the next glass. Very successful! SUPERIORE.DE

"Seductive raspberry aromas, nuances of violets and underbrush; harmonious texture, the tannins polished and in balance with the vife acidity, cut precisely into a multi-faceted finish on flavors of wild berries, spice and cocoa. Excellent with game and wild fowl." Vinum

"Aromas of rose, new leather, red berry and wild herb shape the nose. The linear, racy palate shows finesse and energy, delivering red cherry, pomegranate, licorice, French oak and roasted coffee bean set against vibrant acidity and tightly wound, fine-grained tannins. It's still youthfully austere and needs time to unwind and fully develop." Wine Enthusiast

"A very complex red, showing black-cherry and stone aromas with some wet earth and pine needles. Medium-bodied with firm, polished tannins. It’s very long and racy. Beautiful now, if you like the bright acidity underneath it all. Chiseled style. Or wait a year or two for it to mellow." James Suckling

"Broad in profile, with plum, loam and leather notes allied to dense, assertive tannins. The beefy tannins hold court today, but there is a core of ripe, sweet plum, cherry and spice flavors. Decant now or wait a few years." Wine Spectator

"This is a relatively new single-vineyard wine from Boscarelli. The 2016 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Costa Grande opens to a beautifully dark color with saturated highlights of ruby and garnet gemstone. The bouquet is fine and bright, with vertical aromas of crème de cassis, dried cherry and wild rose. Sangiovese usually offers some earthy tones of forest floor or porcino mushroom, and you get those here too. These various fragrances are wrapped up neatly into the wine's tight, mid-weight texture. Dusty or dry tannins give the wine a slender or streamlined finish." Robert Parker

    • "Sondraia" Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2017

      “Sondraia” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2017

Sondraia - a Cabernet Sauvignon with small additions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc - has a bright colour and a clear, warm aroma of blueberry, raspberry, black cherry and undergrowth. Its intense flavour is powerful, characterised by fine-grained tannin and a seemingly endless finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Complex blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc: fruity, spicy nose of blackberries, dark chocolate and tea; tannins powdery, combines opulence, juiciness and density, finishing on plump notes of wild berries and sandalwood." Vinum

"Deep dark garnet. Woody nose of dark berries, spices, rich cherries, then lots of dark chocolate, minimal malty finish. Opens up dense and lush on the palate, warm-hearted with rich melting, well-integrated wood tannins, still young, will be at its best in a few years." Falstaff

"The wine opens to an inky dark appearance with dried blackberry and plum and plenty of spice and smoke to flesh it out. Like other Bolgheri wines from this vintage, the tannins (both the fruit and the oak tannins, but mostly the fruit) are very powerful and tight." Robert Parker

"This shows depth and richness with chewy tannins and lots of fruit and flavor. Full-bodied and structured." James Suckling

"The 2017 Sondraia is a rich, ample wine. Succulent black cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and spice all build as this creamy, bold Bolgheri red shows off its considerable charms. A whole range of floral and savory top notes from the Cabernets adds aromatic presence as well as notable complexity." Vinous

"Sondraia has increased in quality (and price). In 2017 it has an earthy minerality with spice complexity of clove, bark and walnut husk, supporting vibrant, ripe fruit. The mid-palate is very extracted yet velvety, leading to a warming finish." Decanter

    • "Vicoregio 36" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

“Vicoregio 36” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017

Historically, the vineyards of Castello di Fonterutoli are located in the areas of three neighbouring municipalities of the Chianti Classico: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. With the 2017 vintage, the Mazzei family has for the first time vinified all three major vineyards separately as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, to take into account the diversity of the terroir: Castello di Fonterutoli, Vicoregio 36 and Badiola.

Vicoregio 36 is the successor of the ambitious Mix 36 and from 2017 a real Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. As a result of 50 years of research, 36 biotypes of the Sangiovese grape have been planted on a sunny plateau near Castelnuova Berardenga, from which this extremely interesting and distinctive wine was created a few years ago. The overall impression is very balanced and straightforward, with hints of red cherries, spices, dried blueberries and tobacco. It is the warmest and most balanced of the three Gran Selezione wines. Its intensity, richness of colour and precise fruit immediately captivate the Sangiovese lover. SUPERIORE.DE

"The former mix 36 - the number comes from the 36 different clones from which the wine is made - is now called Vicoregio and comes from a vineyard in Castelnuovo Berardenga at 350 metres above sea level: it has a bewitching scent of stone fruit, violets and dried roses; it has a cut and yet character, great length, ends on notes of ripe berries, eucalyptus and leather." Vinum

"A pretty red with black cherries, walnuts, spice and hints of dried flowers, following through to a medium to full body, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Hints of bitter citrus rind. Very tight for the ripeness of this vintage." James Suckling

"The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vicoregio 36 shows all of the breadth and resonance of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Dark Sangiovese fruit, lavender, spice and blood orange fill out the layers beautifully. The Vicoregio 36 is a real standout in 2017. Its enveloping personality and natural resonance are impossible to miss." Vinous

"The Mazzei family is introducing quite a few new and ambitious changes to its portfolio this year. This wine is one of them. Previously known as Mix 36, it represents a complicated blend of 36 biotypes of Sangiovese, all planted in an experimental vineyard not too far from the estate's high-technology winery. With this vintage, the wine has been upgraded from IGT status to Gran Selezione, at the top of the Chianti Classico quality pyramid. The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vicoregio 36 offers great purity and focus. The bouquet is redolent of wild blueberry, spice, cola, grilled herb, blue flower and tilled earth. There is a pretty menthol-like note on the close." Robert Parker
