    • Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico DOCG 2014 (BIO)

Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico DOCG 2014 (BIO)

The Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico has a wonderful scent of dark wild cherries. Dense but not heavy on the palate, long and pure with complex subtle fruit aromas. A sensual and at the same time joy bringing wine, 60 percent Nero d'Avola from the oak barrel and 40 percent Frappato matured in the glazed cement basin. SUPERIORE.DE

"This is a tremendous wine and is my favorite bottle in this excellent series. The 2014 Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico reveals beautiful integrity and elegance with wild raspberry, blue flower and raw pistachio nut that is a bit sweet and salty at the same time. Buoyant and bright berry fruit takes center stage and although there are some post-fermentation aromas that might stick out to some experts, I embrace them as an integral part of this unique wine's distinctive personality. The bouquet is almost electric. It has many elements that recall a young Nebbiolo with powdered licorice, cola and dried ginger. I tasted this wine from vat and tasted it again as a finished product. The label has been restyled to boast one of the most distinctive and contemporary designs I have even seen in Italian wine." Robert Parker

"This wine combines juicy raspberry fruit flavors with meaty notes in a lively structure that’s reminiscent of a cru Beaujolais. It takes on earthy and smoky tones with time in the glass, brightened by brisk acidity that channels the flavors toward a refreshing finish." Wine&Spirits

Pithos Bianco - a great orange wine from the amphora of 100 percent Grecanico. Complex bouquet of honey, mint and rosemary. Lots of fruit, some salt, nice depth and purity in the interesting, persistent taste. SUPERIORE.DE

"Packaged in a short, squat bottle, the 2016 Pithos Bianco flaunts its golden-copper color and its proudly oxidative style. The wine offers aromas of candied orange peel, almond, yellow rose and even a touch of smoky cedar or church incense. The wine is dry and slightly astringent in terms of mouthfeel. “Aestas Siciliae No. 5” Bianco s.a. dolce

This delicious Moscato is a floral-sweet and complex dessert wine. Its typical Moscato aromas are carried by honey, dried fruit, caramel and a hint of musk. On the palate it is creamy and dense, with a precisely dosed acidity that gives it a lot of freshness. SUPERIORE.DE

"The NV Aestas Siciliae N. 5 (375 ml) is a precious and delicious dessert wine that is only at the beginning of a long life. This fifth edition of the wine opens to a saturated amber color with copper highlights. The ambient light cuts through the thick liquid mass with brilliant highlights. The bouquet shows divine intensity with candied fruit, brown sugar, caramel, honey and sun-dried apricot. The wine boasts opulent thickness and long persistence. "A Moscato Bianco Passito, the 2014 Aestas Siciliae N. 6 (packaged in a 375-milliliter bottle) opens to a slightly veiled appearance that looks vaguely like apple cider, the fleshy kind, with copper and light brown highlights. This is a challenging wine for a critic like me, and the smartest approach I can adopt is to abandon myself to the glass. I say challenging because the wine is very unconventional, but it delivers a beautiful succession of feelings and tastes that make you appreciate the philosophy that went into creating such a special gem. This is a dessert wine (that is not too sweet). It speaks of Sicily and of the very special people who drive the winemaking program at COS. The wine is reflective of their enormous attention and care, but it also shows a touch of folly at the same time." Robert Parker

For us undisputed first league from the Vittoria DOCG. Cerasuolo delle Fontane from the individual vineyard of the same name is a beguiling light ruby red wine with the subtle scent of dark cherries, followed on the palate by currants, hints of tar, suede and a well-dosed measure of Amarenakische. Salty-mineral, never-ending finish. In its entirety highly elegant and packed with the COS own noble restraint. Burgundian large and a lighthouse of appellation! SUPERIORE.DE

“Contrada” Nero d’Avola Sicilia IGT 2011 · 6 Bottles in OWC

From over 50-year-old Nero-d'Avola vines come the grapes for the spicy, persistent Contrada. A rich, opulent bouquet of black cherries and plums, a wonderful fruity play of aromas on the palate with notes of leather, spices and liquorice. Seduces powerfully, with vitality, tension and a pleasant down-to-earth attitude. SUPERIORE.DE

"Nero d'Avola rarely gets this good (and in such a natural state). The excellent 2011 Sicilia Contrada gives us a beautiful window onto the grape most closely associated with the Sicilian Wine Renaissance that we've seen these past 20 years or so. Wine styles have obviously changed over all those years, and COS always embraces an elegant and streamlined approach that is perfectly displayed here. It's been seven years since the harvest, and this wine is still ever-fresh and youthful." Robert Parker

    About the winemakers
    COS
    Sicily
    COS

Actually, they had already taken up the profession of architect. But after Giambattista (Titta) Cilia and Giusto Occhipinti were given a vineyard at a young age and began to put their passion for fine wines on a professional basis, new perspectives opened up for the two friends. The name of their winery, located in southeastern Sicily in Vittoria near Ragusa, is made up of the initials of the surnames of its founders. Pinuccia Strano was originally one of the pioneers. In 1985, however, after five years with the company, she left the project, which had initially been started on a whim, to pursue a career as a doctor. Following the acquisition of the Villa Fontane and Villa Brunnen estates with additional vineyards and a series of experiments on biodynamic cultivation principles, the COS winery has long been regarded as a model for ecological viticulture characterised by uncompromising striving for quality and great enthusiasm.

The grapes are made from local grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Frappato, prepared in a modern cellar, are exceptional wines from the lateral entrants who are always open to innovation and avoid fashions and common habits. They are fresh, full of finesse, purist and cool. Thus the wine style of the adventurous winegrowers Occhipinti and Cilia is rather atypical for such a hot region as Sicily. The gently, slowly and without manipulation developed plants of COS do not only stand for great drinking pleasure, but also impressively prove that typicality beside the terroir can be very strongly influenced by the viticultural and cellar economic influence of people.

In addition to the meticulously cultivated vineyards, a splendid storage area consisting of 150 Spanish amphorae, each with a capacity of 400 litres, is particularly worth mentioning. It is located in the wine cellar of the Villa Brunnen, which dates from the 19th century and was restored in 2007. The vinification of wines in ancient terracotta containers - such as the pithos in the Azienda Agricola COS - was not permitted in Italy for a long time, but was quite common in earlier times. According to the landowners, their decision in favour of Spanish amphorae is not ideological, but exclusively ethical.

Should the winegrowers Cilia and Occhipinti ever work as architects again for a living, then they would prefer to pursue the profession they originally learned in connection with their passion for wine - for example by developing an architecture that goes well with fine wines. SUPERIORE.DE

"After almost playful beginnings more than three decades ago, Giusto Occhipinti and Titta Cilia have long been among the leading representatives of their guild. Open to new ideas, they turned their business into a kind of talent factory that is always good for surprises."Gambero Rosso
