“Nero di Lupo” Rosso Terre Siciliane IGP 2019 (BIO)

Nero di Lupo is - in contrast to many other pure Nero d'Avola wines - a fresh and rather light wine, but no less interesting. In the nose it has an intense aroma of sour cherries and herbs. The light, friendly taste is extremely fruity, lively and silky. SUPERIORE.DE

    • Frappato Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT 2020 (BIO)

Frappato Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT 2020 (BIO)

This is one of the most interesting and expressive wines to come out of the Vittoria area of Sicily. The 2020 Frappato is tangy and sharp, linear and direct. And it reveals more depth and nuances than one would expect in this price range. Normally, a good Frappato always has an authentic and transparent expression. This unmasked openness is also present here, but in addition there is an almost accidental hint of balsamic herbs and bitter almonds that give it further tension and personality. How good that Titta Cilia and Giusto Occhipinti leave nothing to chance, and so this finesse-rich frappato is rightly one of the region's most independent drops every year. SUPERIORE.DE

    • "Rami" Bianco Terre Siciliane IGP 2020 (BIO)

“Rami” Bianco Terre Siciliane IGP 2020 (BIO)

Rami is an attractive and at the same time very individual blend of Grecanico and Inzolia. Bright golden yellow with light, typical cloudiness of an orange wine and with an initially restrained-reductive bouquet, with some aeration then sweetly scented of apricots, dried flowers and orange peel. This intellectual white needs time and an experienced palate - with the necessary portion of oxygen it is highly appetising and elegant on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE

Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico DOCG 2017 (BIO)

Wonderful aroma of dark wild cherries. Dense but not heavy on the palate, long and pure with multilayered subtle fruit flavours. A sensual and at the same time joyful wine, 60 percent Nero d'Avola from the oak barrel and 40 percent Frappato matured in the glazed cement tank. SUPERIORE.DE

"There are depths of crushed raspberries, pomegranate, roses and peppery herbs to be found in the 2017 Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico. This is silky and pliant in feel, offering ripe red and blue fruits accentuated by sweet spices, as juicy acidity maintains vibrancy. Salty minerals and inner violet florals come forward through the close, along with nuanced tannins that create a classically dry sensation on the elegant finish. This is a total pleasure to taste, but while it's already drinking beautifully, it will also excel through a number of years of cellaring." Vinous

    • "Maldafrica" Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT 2017 (BIO)

“Maldafrica” Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT 2017 (BIO)

Maldafrica denotes an "inner longing for a distant land" and is not love at first sight, but it is one of the most interesting wines of Sicily. It is very subtle and nuanced at first and it opens up gradually on its own timetable, but then: spontaneously fermented in amphorae, Maldafrica overwhelms the senses with dark fruits, spices, chopped herbs, salty notes, sulphur, leather and damp tobacco. Its mouthfeel is over a minute long and its acidity provides the perfect amount of astringency to refresh the senses for all its opulence. A quiet monument that sets standards throughout the wine region and leaves a lasting impression for all its longing. SUPERIORE.DE

“Pithos” Bianco (anfora) Terre Siciliane IGP 2019 (BIO)

Pithos Bianco is a great Orange Wine from the amphora made from 100 percent Grecanico, fermented completely on the skins. Complex bouquet of apple, pear, honey, mint and a hint of rosemary. Already young with lots of ripe fruit and spice, a little salt, with beautiful depth and purity in the interesting, persistent taste. Very good storage and ageing potential. Be sure to aerate sufficiently before drinking! SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2019 Bianco Pithos, a varietal Grecanico, is a pale golden color in the glass, presenting a nose of pungent spring flowers, musky notes of apricot, pear and a hint of animal musk. This is soft and pliant in feel, with ripe orchard fruits offset by zesty yellow citrus, as a coating of liquid inner florals saturates deeply. Residual acids maintain balance and a juicy persona, as gobs of minerals and gingery spice linger long. The Bianco Pithos spends a month on the skins post-fermentation, followed by another seven months refining in amphora. While this has the sometimes quirky and nervous personality of an orange wine, it's also very easy to like." Vinous

    • "Zibibbo in Pithos" Bianco (anfora) Terre Siciliane IGP 2018

“Zibibbo in Pithos” Bianco (anfora) Terre Siciliane IGP 2018

Aristocratic, amphora-aged Natural Wine from 100 percent Zibibbo with a floral bouquet, notes of white and yellow stone fruit, plus a savoury, spicy herbal aroma. The aromas merge on the palate with great elegance, fine peach and exotic fruits, long, fresh, mineral and extremely interesting in the finish. Be sure to aerate sufficiently before drinking! SUPERIORE.DE

"Spicy and pungently floral, the 2018 Zibibbo in Pithos delivers an intense wave of grapefruit peel, lemon zest, ginger and hints of pine. This unique expression continues on the palate, as silky textures are contrasted by a zing of nervous acidity, tart orchard fruits and sour melon. As if a repeat of the bouquet, yet now showing through the finish, this tapers off with a salty twang of minerals and mouthwatering freshness. Zibibbo in Pithos is a wild and unique expression of dry Moscato refined in Amphora." Vinous

"Here's a beautiful and floral white from old Magna Graecia. The 2018 Zibibbo in Pithos is a special product with no rivals I can think of in Italy. It opens to a pale-copper golden color, with an enormously fragrant bouquet that is beaming with honeysuckle, star jasmine, acacia flower and the kind of sweet almond blossoms that color the landscape around the Temples of Agrigento in the spring. You also get a touch of "zagara," which is a local word for orange blossom. All these aromas take you directly to southeast Sicily where these sun-kissed grapes are cultivated. This wine is aged for seven months on the skins in amphorae, and added dimensions and complexity are rendered by those slightly more oxidized aromas that recall caramel and dried apricot. The acidity is there, maybe the wine could use a pinch more, and you don't taste or feel much alcohol at a light 11.5%, but the results are beautiful nonetheless." Robert Parker

Copper-coloured with light brown reflections. Floral-sweet and complex on the nose. On the palate, its typical Moscato aromas are carried by honey, dried fruit, caramel and a hint of musk. • "Contrada" Nero d'Avola Terre Siciliane IGT 2017 (BIO)

“Contrada” Nero d’Avola Terre Siciliane IGT 2017 (BIO)

The grapes for the spicy, persistent Contrada come from over 50-year-old Nero d'Avola vines. Rich, lush bouquet of black cherries and plums, wonderfully fruity aromas on the palate with notes of leather, spices and liquorice. Seduces powerfully, with vitality and freshness, tension and a very distinguished elegance. SUPERIORE.DE

"Black currants are offset by a twang of sour citrus, sage, dusty rose and hints of animal musk as the 2017 Nero d'Avola Contrada opens up in the glass. This is deeply textural with a pleasant inner sweetness, as masses of tart red and black fruits saturate deeply, tinged with saline-mineral notes and grippy tannins that mount toward the close. It's youthfully structured yet leaves the mouth watering, as residual acids and hints of spiced orange linger incredibly long. The 2017 closes in upon itself with time in the glass, and it will require a few more years of cellaring to show its best; but it will be worth the wait. The Contrada is a selection from some of the oldest parcels of Nero d'Avola in the Bastonaca area of Vittoria." Vinous

Salty-mineralic, never-ending finish. Highly elegant in its entirety and packaged with COS's own noble restraint. Burgundian greatness and a beacon of the appellation! SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2014 Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico delle Fontane pulls you close with a dark and dusty display of black fruits, exotic spice and dried florals, all enlivened by a lifting hint of fresh mint. This is silky and enveloping, fleshing out across the palate, while ripe wild berries and minerals create a more tactile feel toward the close. Lightly structured and harmonious, as hints of sour citrus and residual acids offset the lingering tart cherry fruit. Sweet tannins frame the experience well. This stunning blend of 60% Nero d'Avola and 40% Frappato is sourced from the best parcels of the COS vineyards in the Fontane area of Vittoria." Vinous

    COS

Actually, they had already taken up the profession of architect. But after Giambattista (Titta) Cilia and Giusto Occhipinti were given a vineyard at a young age and began to put their passion for fine wines on a professional basis, new perspectives opened up for the two friends. The name of their winery, located in southeastern Sicily in Vittoria near Ragusa, is made up of the initials of the surnames of its founders. Pinuccia Strano was originally one of the pioneers. In 1985, however, after five years with the company, she left the project, which had initially been started on a whim, to pursue a career as a doctor. Following the acquisition of the Villa Fontane and Villa Brunnen estates with additional vineyards and a series of experiments on biodynamic cultivation principles, the COS winery has long been regarded as a model for ecological viticulture characterised by uncompromising striving for quality and great enthusiasm.

The grapes are made from local grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Frappato, prepared in a modern cellar, are exceptional wines from the lateral entrants who are always open to innovation and avoid fashions and common habits. They are fresh, full of finesse, purist and cool. Thus the wine style of the adventurous winegrowers Occhipinti and Cilia is rather atypical for such a hot region as Sicily. The gently, slowly and without manipulation developed plants of COS do not only stand for great drinking pleasure, but also impressively prove that typicality beside the terroir can be very strongly influenced by the viticultural and cellar economic influence of people.

In addition to the meticulously cultivated vineyards, a splendid storage area consisting of 150 Spanish amphorae, each with a capacity of 400 litres, is particularly worth mentioning. It is located in the wine cellar of the Villa Brunnen, which dates from the 19th century and was restored in 2007. The vinification of wines in ancient terracotta containers - such as the pithos in the Azienda Agricola COS - was not permitted in Italy for a long time, but was quite common in earlier times. According to the landowners, their decision in favour of Spanish amphorae is not ideological, but exclusively ethical.

Should the winegrowers Cilia and Occhipinti ever work as architects again for a living, then they would prefer to pursue the profession they originally learned in connection with their passion for wine - for example by developing an architecture that goes well with fine wines. SUPERIORE.DE

"After almost playful beginnings more than three decades ago, Giusto Occhipinti and Titta Cilia have long been among the leading representatives of their guild. Open to new ideas, they turned their business into a kind of talent factory that is always good for surprises."Gambero Rosso
