    • Merlot Collio DOC 2011

      Merlot Collio DOC 2011

A dense ruby violet colour, fresh fragrance with strong fruity notes of dark cherries and subtle herbaceous notes in the background. Unfolds with velvety annin and fine melt, good length and tobacco note in the finale. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dario Raccaro's 2011 Collio Merlot is a plump and delicious expression that presents opulent tones of blackberry preserves and black currant. Under other circumstances, a wine this jammy and fruit-forward would taste heavy and one-dimensional. Thanks to the unique buffer of cooling Collio air and its heavier clay soils, the wine instead shows fascinating personality. A tight vein of mineral and spice is woven into the long finish. It won't appeal to everyone, but this wine is a definite conversation piece." Robert Parker

    About the winemakers
    Dario Raccaro
    Friuli
    Dario Raccaro

The Friuli region is famous for its upscale Italian white wine culture. Lovers of fine wines who have little time should definitely go to Cormòns, the capital of the production area. For in the beautiful little town near Udine, already known as a Roman military station in 181 B.C., there is an impressive concentration of top producers of white plants. Dario Raccaro is undoubtedly one of the most important winegrowers, who also play an important role in the international competition for the highest scores. Although the charismatic winegrower likes to highlight his Malvasia - truly an extraordinarily delicious drop - in the highest tones from his small assortment, it is precisely the Friulano Vigna del Rolàt that triggers true hymns of praise in the wine world. It remains the strong magnet of the still young wine producer, which is seldom to be found on the shelves of merchants with a cultivation area of almost six hectares and an annual production of just 30,000 bottles.

The Raccaro family can look back on almost a hundred years of history. The year 1928 was counted when Giuseppe Raccaro decided to flee the stony and barren soils of the Natisone valley to settle in the hills of the Collio in an old colonial house at the foot of Monte Quarin near the church of Santa Maria. The fertile farmland he found there allowed Giuseppe to work as a farmer more successfully than before and to better feed his family. His son Mario continued the work from 1970 with the same pride.

Mario's son Dario is also committed to tradition. The charismatic owner of the estate, who today runs the small winery together with his sons Luca and Paolo, decided in the 1980s to concentrate mainly on winegrowing. He enlarged his own property with an old vineyard planted with Friulano at the beginning of the last century. A wise choice: According to popular tales, the vineyards originated in Hungary and were to quickly make Raccaro famous with the Vigna del Rolàt. Since the same branches and shoots were used again and again in new plantings, the drop of the same name has retained its characteristics and excellent constancy to this day.

The Dario Raccaro winery prefers stainless steel tanks and cold stabilization for the ageing of white wines. It is the best proof of how you can make a name for yourself in a short time with a few labels and exceptionally consistent performance. SUPERIORE.DE

"The quality of Dario Raccaro's wines has made it possible for this simple, small winery to reach the Olympus of the regional wine world."Gambero Rosso
