“Ciampoleto” Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2023 (BIO)
Medium ruby red colour. Fine, red berry bouquet with hints of blackcurrant, black cherry, sage and smoky notes. Firm and expressive on the palate; multi-layered flavours of ripe wild berries, spices and a delicate almond note are flanked by velvety tannins. Ciampoleto has impressive depth and structure for a Rosso, and the respectable finish leaves a soft cherry note with traces of liquorice and a salty vein. SUPERIORE.DE

Brunello di Montalcino “Ugolforte” DOCG 2018 (BIO)
On the classic bouquet, ripe cherry, tobacco and some damp earth. On the palate, first the pure Sangiovese feeling: beautiful small red berries, wild cherry, lively acidity. Then an impenetrable mesh of red and black fruits, which together with a fine web of tannins and minerals reveal more and more of themselves. Compressed and with each sip more open and present, the beautifully diversified taste components present themselves until they then lead into an aristocratically long and fresh finish with a hint of liquorice. ![Brunello di Montalcino "Ugolforte" DOCG 2020 (BIO)]()
Brunello di Montalcino “Ugolforte” DOCG 2020 (BIO)
In the 12th century, a man named Ugolforte led the rebellion of the citizens of Montalcino against the superior power of Siena. A bandit for some, a freedom fighter for others – his name has survived the centuries in the stories told in the hills. Today it is on the label of a Brunello that carries this indomitable spirit. Tenuta San Giorgio is located in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, in the south-east of Montalcino, just a few kilometres from the thousand-year-old Abbey of Sant'Antimo. Founded in 1982 – in the same year that Grattamacco bottled its first vintage – the winery joined the ColleMassari group of the Tipa-Bertarelli family in 2016. Since then, it has shared the terroir with the legendary Poggio di Sotto: the same slopes, the same winds, the same philosophy. 28 hectares of Sangiovese on south-eastern slopes between 300 and 450 metres, embedded in 110 hectares of forest, which protects biodiversity and shapes the microclimate. The soils read like a geological poem: clay, galestro, tuff, red earth, white biancane, the proud Calanchi – and Monte Amiata, the extinct volcano, watches over everything.

![Brunello di Montalcino "Ugolforte" DOCG 2021 (BIO)]()
Brunello di Montalcino “Ugolforte” DOCG 2021 (BIO)
Ugolforte was a resistance fighter. In the 12th century, he led the people of Montalcino against the Sienese occupying forces – a local hero whose name lives on to this day: in a Brunello. The most striking contradiction dates back to 2010. That was when Tenuta San Giorgio began officially supplying the Ugolforte to the Pontifical Swiss Guard – that 500-year-old corps which guards the Pope in the Vatican. The shared values, says the estate, and the symbol of St George himself – virtue and courage, good over evil – , guided the decision. The wine of the medieval rebel in the service of Christendom’s oldest army.

![Brunello di Montalcino "Ugolforte" Riserva DOCG 2018 (BIO)]()
Brunello di Montalcino “Ugolforte” Riserva DOCG 2018 (BIO)
For three years, the team at Tenuta San Giorgio got to know their vineyards. Not as an end in itself – but because they needed to know which plots had what it takes to produce a Riserva. The Brunello Disciplinare is clear on this point: the Riserva must be the exceptional, not the standard. It was not until 2018, after three years of careful observation and selection, that the answer was clear enough to take the first step: the first vintage of Ugolforte Riserva was put into the barrels. Climatically, 2018 was not an easy year in Montalcino. But in oenology, it is often the case that the most challenging vintages produce the most elegant wines. Selection of the best grapes from the best plots, fermentation in oak vats and concrete tanks with long maceration periods, 30 months in 30-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels, bottled in November 2021, released in January 2024. A Brunello that was shaped over six years before leaving the estate.

![Brunello di Montalcino "Ugolforte" Riserva DOCG 2019 (BIO)]()
Brunello di Montalcino “Ugolforte” Riserva DOCG 2019 (BIO)
A debut is followed by confirmation. The second vintage of Ugolforte Riserva shows that 2018 was no fluke – and, at the same time, that every vintage speaks its own language. Whereas the 2018 was fresh and vertical, the 2019 is deeper, spicier and more full-bodied. A different character, the same origin. Castelnuovo dell’Abate, south-east of Montalcino, 250 to 400 metres. Views over the Val d’Orcia. The complex soils – clay, tuff, galestro, red soils – and the temperate Mediterranean climate, cooled by a constant breeze. Organically farmed since the estate’s first certified organic vintage. Hand-harvested with careful selection in the vineyard, fermentation in oak vats and concrete tanks with long maceration periods, followed by 30 months in 30-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels. The same philosophy: minimal intervention, maximum expression of the terroir.

When speaking of Montalcino's unique vineyard sites, Tenuta San Giorgio is one of the wineries that outshines its high-ranking competitors. The winery is located on the slopes of Monte Amiata in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, southeast of Montalcino and just a few kilometers from the thousand-year-old Sant'Antimo Abbey. These gently sunny hills of the Orcia Valley are considered one of the most important areas for the production of great Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino wines.
San Giorgio was founded two years after the introduction of the DOCG appellation of Brunello di Montalcino in 1980 from the original estate of the Ciacci Piccolomini family. The Tipa-Bertarelli family finally absorbed the Tenuta in November 2016, after several changes of ownership, into the ColleMassari Group, which includes the neighboring Poggio di Sotto winery. Since then, particular attention has been paid to the preservation of the 20-36 year old vines and to organic-sustainable viticulture.
The cultivated area covers 146 hectares of land, of which 25 hectares are planted only with Sangiovese. These southeast-facing vines tend to climb steep, rocky slopes with a subsoil of gravel and clay at an elevation of 250 meters, while at 450 meters they grow on predominantly sandy loam. A Mediterranean dry breeze in the west and the emerging temperature variations between day and night ensure that the demanding Sangiovese Grosso can reach ideal grape ripeness.
The winery produces only two labels whose names are deeply rooted in the history of the production area: The Brunello di Montalcino named "Ugolforte" is dedicated to a local hero who led the fight for freedom of the citizens of Siena against the conquest of the Sicilian kingdom in the 12th century. The range is completed by the Rosso di Montalcino "Ciampoleto", whose name, on the other hand, recalls the term "Ciampolo", which in the local dialect denotes a land particularly suitable for wine growing.
The production philosophy has been re-adapted to the traditional Brunello style under the direction of oenologist Luca Marrone. The barriques of the previous owner have therefore been replaced by large wooden barrels, which give rise to two velvety red wines. The wines enjoy great popularity, for example, Tenuta San Giorgio is the official supplier of the Papal Swiss Guard. So it is certainly no coincidence that San Giorgio has a justifiably special status within the Tuscan wine scene. SUPERIORE.DE
