• "Ciampoleto" Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2018

“Ciampoleto” Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2018

Medium-bodied ruby red. Fine, red berry bouquet with hints of blackcurrant, black cherry, sage and smoky notes. Firm and expressive on the palate; multilayered aromas of ripe wild berries, spices and a delicate almond note are flanked by velvety tannins. For a Rosso, Ciampoleto has impressive depth and structure, the respectable finish leaves a soft cherry note with traces of liquorice and a salty vein. SUPERIORE.DE

"Essentially black fruit, but there are hints of raw meat and herbs, too. Medium-to full-bodied with firm tannins and a flavorful finish. Nicely done." James Suckling

"The 2018 Rosso di Montalcino Ciampoleto is wonderfully expressive, mixing savory with sweet through a display of sage and white smoke, which evolves further to show rich cherry sauce, blackberries and a hint of tomato leaf. It’s elegant and silky, with stimulating acids maintaining balance as ripe wild berries and spice flood the palate, leaving salty minerals and a coating of fine tannin in their wake. There’s more structure and depth here than you’d expect from a Rosso, with hints of licorice and violet florals lingering long." Vinous

    • Brunello di Montalcino "Ugolforte" DOCG 2015

Brunello di Montalcino “Ugolforte” DOCG 2015

In the highly harmonious 2015 vintage, the Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte walks a dead straight line between opulence and elegance. Full, inviting nose with notes of rosewood and ripe cherries, lots of blackberry. The palate has a nice juicy draw: wrapped in a supple texture, there's a nicely fanned out sequence of wild berry, sour cherry, spice, licorice and some balsamic herb flavors. Fine-meshed tannin and perfectly balanced, stabilizing Sangiovese acidity flank the long journey into an elegant, warm finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte is quite reticent at this stage, showing a dusty mix of woodland red berries, with hints of savory spice, leather and dried florals. On the palate, silky textures are offset by tart cherry fruit, with cool-toned acids and minerals adding lift in an expression that seems both savory and feminine. The finish is medium in length and quite pretty, resonating on red inner florals and fruits, with a lingering spry acidity and the slightest hint of fine tannin." Vinous

"With vineyards on the Castelnuovo dell'Abate side of the appellation, this wine reflects the warm vintage and the slightly wild characteristics of fruit from the southern half of the appellation. The San Giorgio 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte is a robust and generous wine, with contemporary touches of smoke and spice that add to its aromatic intensity and complexity. There is plenty of ripe, dark and concentrated fruit here, and that's ultimately what powers this hearty Brunello. The tannins show good integration too." Robert Parker

"There’s wonderful polish and focus to the vibrant nose here, which frames sour cherries, raspberries, fruit tea and darker, earthier elements. Medium-to full-bodied and beautifully pure and inviting, this is a dialed-in Brunello with sweeping acidity and finely chiseled tannins." James Suckling

"This beefy red is less forthcoming than many of its peers, featuring a core of pure, fresh cherry flavors. Earth and leafy tobacco elements emerge as this unfolds on the lingering finish. Shows fine balance and energy overall." Wine Spectator

    • Brunello di Montalcino "Ugolforte" DOCG 2016

Brunello di Montalcino “Ugolforte” DOCG 2016

The 2016 edition of Ugolforte is a beautiful image of this vintage. Unadulterated, racy, dynamic and very precise, this Brunello advances. On the nose, distinctly ripe cherry, tobacco and some damp earth. On the palate, first the pure Sangiovese sensation: beautiful little red berries, wild cherry, lively acidity. Then an impenetrable web of red and black fruits that reveal more and more of themselves along with a fine web of tannins and minerals. Compressed and with each sip more open and present the beautifully fanned out taste components present themselves until they then lead with a breath of liquorice into an aristocratically long and fresh finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, bright ruby red. Shy on the nose, gives a bit of everything but not too much. Compact and polished on the palate, tight tannin, opens on clear, salty fruit, punchy and long." Falstaff

"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte is a dark beauty, impressing with its youthful poise but also its potential. Mint leaf and a dusting of cedar give way to crushed stone, wild strawberry and hints of flowery undergrowth. There are depths of velvety textures and polished red/black fruits, which create a sense of elegance; yet you can feel that there are layers here which are currently unseen. A complex web of fine tannins and minerals penetrate deeply, just as brisk acids and remnants of tart woodland berries fight to remain prevalent; yet all that remains is a hint of licorice. Wow." Vinous

"This is a full-bodied red with ripe blackberry, smoked-meat and burnt-orange notes. Strong tannins with a lots of chewiness. Quite tight on the finish. But there is pureness and beauty to this. More opulent than the 2015." James Suckling

About the winemakersTenuta San GiorgioTuscany | Montalcino
    Tenuta San Giorgio

When speaking of Montalcino's unique vineyard sites, Tenuta San Giorgio is one of the wineries that outshines its high-ranking competitors. The winery is located on the slopes of Monte Amiata in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, southeast of Montalcino and just a few kilometers from the thousand-year-old Sant'Antimo Abbey. These gently sunny hills of the Orcia Valley are considered one of the most important areas for the production of great Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino wines.

San Giorgio was founded two years after the introduction of the DOCG appellation of Brunello di Montalcino in 1980 from the original estate of the Ciacci Piccolomini family. The Tipa-Bertarelli family finally absorbed the Tenuta in November 2016, after several changes of ownership, into the ColleMassari Group, which includes the neighboring Poggio di Sotto winery. Since then, particular attention has been paid to the preservation of the 20-36 year old vines and to organic-sustainable viticulture.

The cultivated area covers 146 hectares of land, of which 25 hectares are planted only with Sangiovese. These southeast-facing vines tend to climb steep, rocky slopes with a subsoil of gravel and clay at an elevation of 250 meters, while at 450 meters they grow on predominantly sandy loam. A Mediterranean dry breeze in the west and the emerging temperature variations between day and night ensure that the demanding Sangiovese Grosso can reach ideal grape ripeness.

The winery produces only two labels whose names are deeply rooted in the history of the production area: The Brunello di Montalcino named "Ugolforte" is dedicated to a local hero who led the fight for freedom of the citizens of Siena against the conquest of the Sicilian kingdom in the 12th century. The range is completed by the Rosso di Montalcino "Ciampoleto", whose name, on the other hand, recalls the term "Ciampolo", which in the local dialect denotes a land particularly suitable for wine growing.

The production philosophy has been re-adapted to the traditional Brunello style under the direction of oenologist Luca Marrone. The barriques of the previous owner have therefore been replaced by large wooden barrels, which give rise to two velvety red wines. The wines enjoy great popularity, for example, Tenuta San Giorgio is the official supplier of the Papal Swiss Guard. So it is certainly no coincidence that San Giorgio has a justifiably special status within the Tuscan wine scene. SUPERIORE.DE
