Here, for the first time, comes the popular La Segreta Bianco as 100% Grillo from the charming Ulmo region and the oldest winery of the Planeta family with the 2020 vintage. Light straw yellow with green reflections. On the nose, lots of sea breeze with primary fruity notes of citrus, pear and oregano. Dry, fresh and taut on the palate with a fine salty note and a lot of desire for the next sip. SUPERIORE.DE

"Pale shimmering greenish yellow. Comes on fresh meadow herbs, peach blossom, a hint of orange zest on the nose. Gentle attack with well-integrated acidity, pleasantly mineral, builds good tension, then slight restraint in the back, finishes on salted lime." Falstaff

"The 2020 Grillo La Segreta is wickedly fresh, presenting a display of sour melon, lime zest and spicy florals. Its textures are soothingly soft, offset by vibrant acids with tart orchard fruits and an inner smokiness that I find quite attractive. Sour citrus tugs at the cheeks as the 2020 finishes with mouthwatering tension. You could drink this all day." Vinous

"White spring flower, grapefruit and Mediterranean herb aromas follow through to the bright, savory palate along with notes of white peach and Meyer lemon. It's an incredible value at this price point, with tang, saline and crisp acidity that energize the close." Wine Enthusiast

    • "Controdanza" Rosso Sicilia Noto DOC 2017

“Controdanza” Rosso Sicilia Noto DOC 2017

The country dance (controdanza) is a typical dance in which man and woman face each other and unite in graceful movements - depending on their gender, the dancers interpret the music in their own way. This wine is exactly the same: Nero d'Aola and Merlot - as is well known, opposites attract and, with the right intuition, can adjust wonderfully to each other, forming harmony and contrast at the same time.

Strong purple. Mulberry and plum contrast with incense and balsamic notes. The grapes all come from calcareous soils, which again bridges the gap and makes this young wine balancing and harmonious. Soft tannins and beautifully integrated delicate acidity carry Controdanza into a smooth, medium-length finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Minerally up front, with lots of tarry smoke and hot stone on the nose, notes that underscore the palate's dried raspberry, singed orange peel and tobacco flavors. Medium- to full-bodied and gusty, with a firm, focused finish." Wine Spectator

      Nocera Rosso Sicilia DOC 2018

Nocera - this noble vine is grown on only a few hectares in the province of Messina, on a spectacular vineyard surrounded by the sea. Deep and intense ruby red, original scent of white pepper, cherries, geranium and summer fruits. Convincing the typical fresh-fruity taste of this old Sicilian grape. A fine salty vein in the final. An unforgettable experience from the Planeta dependency Capo Milazzo on the coast north of Etna. SUPERIORE.DE

"Shimmering garnet with ruby accents. Fine nuances of ripe black cherries, blackberry, verbena and rosehip, delicate wood in the background. Fruit-driven palate entry, with juicy melting, interwoven tannin, pleasant pressure, of medium weight, emphatically spicy on the finish." Falstaff

"A fruity, easy red with cherry, lemon-peel and berry aromas and flavors. It's medium-to light-bodied with light tannins and a tangy finish." James Suckling

"Taking in the 2018 Nocera is like sitting on a craggy rock face on the coast of the Mediterranean with a handful of wild strawberries. It's understated and feminine, speaking more in whispers, the soft textures giving way to pure red fruits backed by salty minerals, inner violet florals and hints of lavender. There's a twang of residual acids that tugs at the cheeks through the finish as this tapers off with a refreshing feel. The Nocera could even be enjoyed with a slight chill, and it would also make a great complement to any seaside cuisine. Think of this as Sicilia's answer to cru Beaujolais." Vinous

"Bright and savory, this has alluring scents of fragrant blue flowers, wild red berries and Mediterranean brush. On the polished, racy palate, supple tannins and vibrant acidity accompany juicy red cherry, blood orange, star anise and a tangy mineral note evoking rusty nail." Wine Enthusiast

"Very smoky and intense with cherries, berries and some orange peel and ash. It's full-bodied, but not overbearing, with lovely fruit and citrus character at the finish. Drinkable now, but better in a year or two." James Suckling

    • "Mamertino" Rosso Sicilia DOC 2017

      “Mamertino” Rosso Sicilia DOC 2017

Elegant cuvée with spicy aromas of black cherry, plum and white pepper as well as an earthy undertone. Clear on the palate with hints of blackberry, the fruit always very fine, nice spice, including star anise, very rounded. Finishes with elegance and a hint of lemon peel. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, dark ruby red. In the nose of cold smoke, graphite, noble wood, then of ripe cranberries and rich heart cherries, a hint of pepper spice in the aftertaste. On the palate with tight tannins, very juicy, also has grip, amazingly fresh, spans a drinking elegant arc." Falstaff

"The 2017 Mamertino is a unique wine that represents a DOC wine appellation in Milazzo (in the northern tip of Sicily) that gets very little use as far as I can tell. The traditional blend is Nero d'Avola and Nocera, and the wine is easy in approach and execution. There's nothing too complicated here-just fresh cherry and blackberry followed by earthy tones and some subtle mineral or sea breeze nuances." Robert Parker

"Very inviting from the outset with notes of dried blueberries, raspberry cheesecake and dried nutmeg. Medium-bodied, soft and elegant. Quite tense but juicy tannins." James Suckling

"The 2017 Mamertino is a blend of Nero d'Avola and the rare Nocera grape, hailing from coastal vineyards in the extreme northeast of Sicily. It features a gorgeous display of crushed blueberries and sweet spice, complicated by hints of tobacco and white smoke. This is soft and silky, yet conveys an almost salty tension, as the Mamertino then gives way to a pure expression of red and blue fruits, all motivated by juicy acidity, which slowly fizzles out to a lasting note of sweet violet florals and cheek-puckering tannins. It's a unique and gorgeous expression of variety and place." Vinous

    • "Dorilli" Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico DOCG 2017

“Dorilli” Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico DOCG 2017

Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico Dorilli is named after the vineyard Dorilla from which the grapes originate and this in turn after the nearby river Dirillo. Fine and elegant with light wood tones from the ageing, juicy fresh until the long final. SUPERIORE.DE

"A pure and juicy note of raspberry ganache is underscored by hints of toast and candied kumquat in this elegant, medium-bodied red. Lightly chalky tannins provide definition for the creamy flavor range, and spice and smoke notes accent the raspberry fruit as it echoes on the finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2017 Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico Dorilli pulls you close to the glass with an enticing bouquet that mixes wild herbs, smoke, black cherry and hints of animal musk. It's deeply textural, contrasting a velvety wave of ripe black fruits against salty acids and chalky mineral tones. While youthfully dense, the 2017 boasts a primary intensity, as if you can sense all of the skins, pulp and seeds of the grapes, coating the palate in notes of tart raspberry and licorice, along with a hint of spiced citrus that balances the expression perfectly. The Dorilli is beautiful today but also well-suited for medium-term cellaring." Vinous

    • "Eruzione 1614" Nerello Mascalese Sicilia DOC 2018

“Eruzione 1614” Nerello Mascalese Sicilia DOC 2018

In the history of Etna, the eruption of 1614 is legendary, as it lasted ten years and is thus to date the longest recorded eruption of the volcano that is still active today. A very impressive and fitting name for Planeta's Etna series of equally impressive wines.

It could hardly be more autochthonous: this excellent wine from the Nerello Mascalese grape comes from the hotspot on the east coast of Sicily, from the slopes of Mount Etna. Brilliant bright cherry red, fine scent of raspberry and blood orange, gripping, taut acidity, silky tannin and a buoyant elegance with beautiful minerality. Great, long and unique! SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, brightening ruby. Appealing and open nose, opens with notes of raspberry, some blackberry, fine spice in the background. Lots of present tannin on the palate, hearty bite at the core, firm pressure on the final, juicy and salty." Falstaff

"As if you can smell the ashen volcanic soils that these vines grow in, the 2018 Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 wafts up smoky and musky, with a complement of cherry and dried strawberry that fully completes the experience. This is soft and fleshy in feel, boasting a noticeable inner sweetness nicely balanced by brisk acids and pretty inner florals." Vinous

In the history of Etna, the eruption of 1614 is legendary, as it lasted ten years and is thus to date the longest recorded eruption of the volcano that is still active today. A very impressive and fitting name for Planeta's Etna series of equally impressive wines.

Carricante from Planeta's Etna vineyard is an exceptional growth full of freshness, energy and minerality. This noble grape variety thrives under exclusive conditions, on volcanic soils and at altitudes of 870 metres. A wonderfully complex pleasure that is always released for sale only two years after the harvest. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, rich straw yellow. Opens with fragrant notes of flint, fragrant bergamot, some peach, very appealing. Taut and clear on the palate, lots of juicy peach, so right to bite into, fresh and very good tension, citrus on the final." Falstaff

"Lemon-rind, pear and green-apple aromas follow through to a full body with a round, creamy palate of ripe and dried fruit that comes across mostly tropical. Creamy texture. Really tangy." James Suckling

"Racy acidity drives this lithe white, creating a lip-smacking frame for the expressive flavors of blood orange and white raspberry, slivered almond, petrol and grated ginger. Minerally finish." Wine Spectator

"Decidedly more savory than sweet and flinty as well, the 2018 Carricante Eruzione 1614 sends up a stunning bouquet of dried apricots, grilled orange and hints of white pepper. Its silky and pliant textures quickly gain a more tactile feel, as a mix of bright acids, saline-minerals, tart orchard fruits and sour citrus cascades across the palate. There are depths unseen here, as the 2018 displays a youthful density while remaining lifted, balanced and simply tempting the imagination as to what's to come with further cellaring. A beautiful Etna Carricante with a 10% addition of Riesling that shows tremendous tension. Well done." Vinous

"Delicious, crisp and showing a great depth of flavor, this white from the slopes of Mount Etna doles out juicy yellow apple, peach, wild herb and savory, almost salty, mineral notes. Light golden yellow, fine bouquet of orange blossom, some quince and peach. Sparkling on the palate with surprisingly lively acidity, spreads nicely, orange peel and some grapefruit again in the long final. SUPERIORE.DE

"This opens with aromas of dried apricot, marmalade and jasmine. The fruity aromas carry over to the creamy palate together with dried exotic fruit and bright acidity. Notes of pine nuts and vanilla emerge on the persistent finish." Wine Enthusiast

"The 2018 Passito di Noto (packaged in a 500-milliliter bottle) opens to a beautifully luminous color with bright golden highlights. "The 2018 Passito di Noto, made from air-dried Moscato grapes, shows sweet peach preserves, candied ginger and a lifting hint of fresh mint and exotic florals. It's silky in feel, enveloping the palate in glycerol-like textures contrasted by an almost salty sensation, as ultra-ripe orchard fruits find balance through a note of tropical citrus. “Cometa” Fiano Sicilia Menfi DOC 2019

Magnificent, single-varietal Fiano and the white star from Planeta - almost a legend. Complex scent of blossoms and yellow fruits. On the palate, this white wine is as refined as it is powerful. With lots of fruit, soft and very long, it spreads out. A fantastic drop! SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, rich straw yellow. Intense and at the same time finely marked nose, opens with notes of exotic fruits, lychee and mango, but also lots of peach, some lemon in the background. Very fresh on the nose, juicy yellow fruit notes, present, well-integrated acidity gives tension, creamy on the back end with very good weight, juicy." Falstaff

"Smoke is the first thing that comes to mind as you take in the 2019 Fiano Cometa. Musky dried peach and nectarine, crushed almonds, fennel and gorgeous yellow florals join the mix with time in the glass. This is soft and lifted, as an inner flintiness gives way to savory baked apple and wild herbal notes. There's a deeper richness here that only cellaring will help bring fully to the surface, as this tapers off poised yet long and almost salty in character. About the winemakersPlanetaSicily
    Planeta

If you want to visit all five wineries of the family winery Planeta with its almost 370 hectares of vineyards, you have to make a journey through the traditionally favoured growing areas of Sicily. The journey could start in the west in the province of Agrigento, continue south in the provinces of Ragusa and Syracuse and end in the north-east on Mount Etna in the new winery in Castiglione di Sicilia, harmoniously integrated into the landscape. Because some of Planeta's most splendid locations are in Menfi, Sambuca, Noto, Vittoria, Capo Milazzo and on the northern edge of the still active volcano. The family pays maximum respect to the vines and wines that have grown historically and are rooted in tradition. She is active in research and prefers old native grape varieties. Planeta also maintains personal relations with other producers on the island in order to promote the development of Sicily as a wine region.

At Planeta, clever marketing and wise winemaking go hand in hand. According to Francesca Planeta, ex-product manager at Nestlé and Vinum reader, the queen of Italy, it was a long time coming "Donne del Vino" as unfine, local grape varieties. To avoid alienating potential customers, the family first planted international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet and Chardonnay. She succeeded in conquering the market with these wines and then also connoisseurs for Nero d'Avola, Grecanico, Carricante, Moscato di Noto, Frappato and Nerello Mascalese. It is also thanks to the winery that the cultivation of Fiano has been successfully tested in Sicily.

The wine company Planeta was founded in 1995 in the south of the island, in the province of Sambuca di Sicilia on Lake Arancio. With state-of-the-art cellar technology, the dynamic cousins Francesca, Alessio and - since the turn of the millennium - Santi Planeta quickly led the company to the top of Italy with the support of Alessio's father Diego Planeta, President of the Cantine Settesoli in Menfi. Four years after its foundation and before the regional expansion, the wine house was voted the best winery in the country by the wine guideGambero Rosso.

The grape harvest in the environmentally friendly winery lasts three months. It begins in August with the precocious varieties in south-western Menfi. The harvest ends at the end of October with the Nerello Mascalese on Mount Etna. All of Planeta's wines - around 50 percent of which are exported - have a personal style in common that expresses the terroirs of the various vineyards particularly well. La Foresteria, a hotel complex in the province of Agrigento, also belongs to the family property. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the Sicily brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate. Enormous credit goes to them."Robert Parker
