Rosé Sicilia DOC 2022 (BIO)
Planetas Rosé exudes a fragrant bouquet of freshly cut roses, wild strawberries, pomegranate and wet stone. Silky and smooth on the palate with a spicy, saline blend of mineral apples and pears giving way to pretty inner flowers. Lingers long on the finish, recalling all the fruity and floral notes on the nose and palate. Well done! SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Rosé is spicy and blends gravel with grapefruit and young kiwi. It feels round and silky and gains grip with the inclusion of saline minerals. On the finish, the 2022 is incredibly fresh, leaving tropical melon and a gentle hint of sour citrus." Vinous
"Notes of dried herbs and citrus peel with pink cherries and rose petals on offer. Medium-bodied, tangy and a little phenolic with vivid acidity cutting through. Racy finish." James Suckling

“La Segreta” Grillo Sicilia DOC 2022 (BIO)
La Segreta Bianco as 100% Grillo from the charming Ulmo region and the oldest winery of the Planeta family. Light straw yellow with green reflections. On the nose, lots of sea breeze with primary fruity notes of citrus, pear and oregano. Dry, fresh and taut on the palate with a fine salty note and a lot of desire for the next sip. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Grillo La Segreta is delicately floral in the glass, showing only lime zest and sour melon nuances. This soothes with its soft textures and vibrant acidity as candied citrus tones and green apple cascade throughout. The 2022 tapers off with a lovely inner sweetness yet crisp and refreshing." Vinous

“La Segreta” Nero d’Avola Sicilia DOC 2021
Ruby red colour with violet reflections. On the nose, typical varietal aromas of ripe plums, cocoa, wild fruits and a flawless spiciness with traces of white smoke. On the palate, full and wide and of beautiful juiciness with very soft, well-integrated tannins and a fruity, finely spicy finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Wild herbs and wet stones give way to crushed blackberries as the 2021 Nero d'Avola La Segreta opens in the glass. It's soft and round on the palate, with herbal-tinged wild berry fruits and saline mineral tones that add grip toward the close. The 2021 finishes staining and long with grippy tannins that stick around. Freshness is maintained through a bump of residual acidity. La Segreta Nero d'Avola will perform best alongside a hearty meal." Vinous

Frappato Sicilia Vittoria DOC 2021 (BIO)
A pure Frappato is a rarity, because this very late-ripening grape variety is usually blended with others. Frappato grows on the sandy soils of Vittoria in south-eastern Sicily and produces a complex wine with race and character. Floral bouquet with aromas of cherry and peach, on the palate notes of strawberry, slightly mineral and very energetic, reminiscent of apple and orange peel in the finish. Ideal food companion. SUPERIORE.DE
"Very bright red; floral-fruity, inviting; fresh-fruity, delicate, slender, wonderfully drinky." (JLF) Merum
"Aromatic nose of orange peel, dried flowers and baked raspberries. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Red-fruited and bright at the start, but then takes on more herbal and black tea character." James Suckling
"The bright garnet colour of this wine in the glass is complemented by its bright and sunny notes of red fruits - cherries, strawberries and raspberries. These aromas are joined by a slight earthiness with tomato and red pepper accents on the palate. The powerful astringency comes from earth notes and tannins." Wine Enthusiast

“Controdanza” Rosso Sicilia Noto DOC 2018
The country dance (controdanza) is a typical dance in which man and woman face each other and unite in graceful movements - depending on their gender, the dancers interpret the music in their own way. This wine is exactly the same: Nero d'Aola and Merlot - as is well known, opposites attract and, with the right intuition, can adjust wonderfully to each other, forming harmony and contrast at the same time.
Strong purple. Mulberry and plum contrast with incense and balsamic notes. The grapes all come from calcareous soils, which again bridges the gap and makes this young wine balancing and harmonious. Soft tannins and beautifully integrated delicate acidity carry Controdanza into a smooth, medium-length finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Lustrous ruby with orange tinges. Alluring deep nose of forest fruit with notes of new oak. The palate is supple and concentrated and not heavy at all. Succulent finish with soft, grainy tannins and a hint of cinnamon stick and tomato stalk. Super-likeable." Jancis Robinson
"With a mix of ripe plums, crushed stone, violet pastille, hints of brown sugar and licorice, the 2018 Nero d'Avola di Noto Controdanza seduces the senses. Its silky textures wash a contrasting blend of tart wild berries and salty minerals across a core of vibrant acidity. Grippy tannins mount toward the close, buried beneath a saturation of dark primary fruits, all under an air of purple-tinged inner florals. The 2018 Controdanza will require a year or two of cellaring to soften. This is a powerful blend of 85% Nero d'Avola and 15% Merlot from Planeta’s Noto property in the extreme southern tip of Sicily." Vinous

Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG 2021 (BIO)
Cerasuolo di Vittoria - a seasoned local red with great tradition and just as much character. Typical fragrance of the wines from Vittoria: Aromas of red berries, cherries, prickly pear, ginger and fruit sweets. Tasty, extremely complex, fresh, lively and yet balanced. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Cerasuolo di Vittoria wafts up, more savory than sweet, with smokey earth tones and crushed rocks giving way to black raspberry. This washes across the palate with mineral-tinged red and blue berry fruits complicated by inner herbal tones. Brisk acidity maintains energy throughout as the 2021 tapers off with a salty flourish, leaving licorice and spice hints to linger." Vinous
"Bright ruby red with violet shimmer. Intense nose of fresh strawberries and raspberries, then slightly spicy and a hint of bitter chocolate. Salty on the palate, with a fine acid spectrum, well-integrated and fine-grained tannin, long final." Falstaff
"Aromas of black cherries and blood orange slices. Medium to full body, undertones of orange peel and a juicy finish. Clean, focused and genuine. Delicious all round." James Suckling

Rich ruby. Elegant cuvée with spicy aromas of black cherry, plum and white pepper as well as an earthy undertone. “Eruzione 1614” Nerello Mascalese Sicilia DOC 2019
In the history of Etna, the eruption of 1614 is legendary, as it lasted ten years and is thus to date the longest recorded eruption of the volcano that is still active today. A very impressive and fitting name for Planeta's Etna series of equally impressive wines.
It could hardly be more autochthonous: this excellent wine from the Nerello Mascalese grape comes from the hotspot on the east coast of Sicily, from the slopes of Mount Etna. Brilliant bright cherry red, fine scent of raspberry and blood orange, gripping, taut acidity, silky tannin and a buoyant elegance with beautiful minerality. Great, long and unique! SUPERIORE.DE
"Pure Nerello Mascalese of great finesse, from the Cru Sciaranuova, matured for 12 months in oak barrels, very multi-faceted nose, red currant, notes of laurel, nutmeg and wild mint. Savoury and spicy on the palate, with a fruity and oily finish." Luca Gardini
"The 2019 Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 is delicate and floral in the glass, with pretty rose tones and spice hints complementing dusty black cherry. It washes across the palate with ease, soft and juicy in feel with tactile mineral tones that add grip toward the close. A coating of fine tannins lingers as the 2019 finishes remarkably fresh yet youthfully structured. Some time will be required for this to come fully into focus." Vinous
"Aromas of sliced strawberries, red cherries and grated nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied with fine, slightly taut tannins. Lively and acidic on the palate, with plenty of white pepper for stimulation. Accompanied by notes of wet stone and sage. Well structured and complex. Best after 2024." James Suckling

“Maroccoli” Syrah Sicilia Menfi DOC 2019
Fresh, bright ruby. The Syrah convinces with its intense and ripe bouquet with hints of figs, red currants, pickled cherries, blueberries, spices and vanilla. Velvety, noble tannins accompany the opulent and lively structure until the lingering final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Berry fruit with dark tobacco and lead pencil flavours that lead into a medium body and juicy finish. Straightforward and tight tannins." James Suckling
"The 2019 Maroccoli is impossible to ignore. It blossoms in the glass with a mentholated mix of dried strawberries, dusty rose and autumnal spice. This is sleek and racy in style, with cooling minerality and brisk acidity that lifts its dark red berry fruits. A coating of fine tannins adds youthful poise as nuances of red plum and inner earth tones slowly fade. The Maroccoli, a varietal Syrah, is gorgeous yet geared for the cellar. Lose this for two to three years for the best effect." Vinous

“Eruzione 1614” Carricante Sicilia DOC 2019
In the history of Etna, the eruption of 1614 is legendary, as it lasted ten years and is thus to date the longest recorded eruption of the volcano that is still active today. A very impressive and fitting name for Planeta's Etna series of equally impressive wines.
Carricante from Planeta's Etna vineyard is an exceptional growth full of freshness, energy and minerality. This noble grape variety thrives under exclusive conditions, on volcanic soils and at altitudes of 870 metres. A wonderfully complex pleasure that is always released for sale only two years after the harvest. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, rich golden yellow. In the nose of fresh stone fruit, green apple and citrus fruit, then flint and bergamot. Taut and juicy on the palate, very fresh and with traction, mineral, citrus on the final." Falstaff
"Aromas of apples, smoked lemons and nuts with some lemon grass. Some bruised apple, too. Medium to full body. Round texture with lovely fruit and a flavorful finish." James Suckling

Without the drive and clear quality ideas of Francesca, Alessio and Santi Planeta, Sicily would perhaps not be one of Italy's most interesting wine regions today. For among the first Sicilian wines to free the Mediterranean island from its reputation for cheap mass-produced wine was none other than Planeta's magnificent and now world-famous Chardonnay.
The reason why the Cousin trio did not immediately choose one of the many Sicilian grape varieties, but rather a French one, is that in the 1980s, the indigenous varieties were mainly used for the production of inexpensive cask wines. The ideal recipe for success was therefore to bring the unique island terroir to the outside world first and foremost with the help of grape varieties that were already internationally known - which ultimately secured the Sicilian winery a well-deserved ticket to the world's wine markets.
Planeta's Chardonnay thus demonstrated that Sicily has much more to offer than just simple bulk wine. Over the past two decades, the three young winemakers have established themselves among the most important producers on the island thanks to their high quality standards. With over 390 hectares, the focus is now also on the incredibly exciting autochthonous grape varieties, which are cultivated by the family in the predestined wine regions of Sicily.
After a long period of research in the main wineries Ulmo and Dispensa near Menfi - where they still focus mainly on the production of international grape varieties - the Planetas also expanded further south to the area of Vittoria with the Dorilli winery and later to Noto with the construction of the Buonivini winery. These locations are mainly reserved for the indigenous grape varieties, such as Frappato or the popular Nero d'Avola. However, in the search for the most demanding cultivation zones on the island, they could not refrain from also settling on the lava-spitting Etna to create outstanding volcanic wines at the Feudo di Mezzo estate. The La Baronia winery in Capo Milazzo opposite the Aeolian Islands is also part of Planeta, where the ancient Nocera grape variety thrives. Grinning, Francesca told us in conversation at the time: "And we tell ourselves every year that this will be the last winery."
This promise was obviously not set in stone, because at the same time as the 2022 harvest, Planeta's new winery opened its doors on the Monte Cirami in Sambuca di Sicilia. Here, the four top red wines are now vinified exclusively in organic production (starting with the 2022 vintage): Didacus Rosso, Burdese, Maroccoli and Sito dell'Ulmo.
The project is based on the ambition to constantly optimise the quality of Planeta wines and to create a place that corresponds to the company's production philosophy and where all the knowledge and skills are concentrated. Monte Cirami, an exceptional place in terms of landscape, represents the centuries-old harmony between man and nature. Here, great, expressive red wines are produced with enormous care. A modern winery that is careful to preserve the original characteristics of the grapes as much as possible.
"The need to create a place for the production of excellent red wines stems from the desire to dedicate equally special spaces to special wines. The idea of providing the most important wines with a physical production and processing space that meets their needs is a fitting tribute to the quality of the product and a dream we have cherished for years," comments CEO Alessio Planeta on the opening of this heartfelt project.
From west to east, the Planeta name is spread across seven boutique wineries. In order to inspire with more top Sicilian wines, the philosophy of the company puts the preservation and exploration of the breathtakingly beautiful territory at the very top. Their rich and unique wine selection, with its uncompromising quality and a Mediterranean flavour, undoubtedly reflects the true potential of the popular Italian wine island. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the Sicily brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate. Enormous credit goes to them." Robert Parker
