Rosé Sicilia DOC 2021
Fresh cuvée of Syrah and Nero d'Avola. Light and seductive fragrance of rose petals, pomegranate and wild strawberries, well balanced and soft on the palate, a pleasantly fine fruity rosato in the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Rosè wafts up with a perfumed bouquet of freshly-cut roses, wild strawberries and wet stone. It’s silky and pliant in feel with a savory, salty mix of mineral-tinged apples and pears that give way to pretty inner florals. The 2021 lasts incredibly long through the finish, recalling all of the fruit and flowery notes from its nose and palate. Frappato Sicilia Vittoria DOC 2020
A pure Frappato is a rarity, because this very late-ripening grape variety is usually blended with others. Frappato grows on the sandy soils of Vittoria in southeastern Sicily and produces a complex wine with race and character. The bouquet is floral with aromas of cherry and peach, on the palate notes of strawberry, slightly mineral and slender, reminiscences of apple and orange peel in the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Frappato is wickedly fresh yet fruit-focused, with bright cherries contrasted by candied orange peels and finally, a balancing hint of wet stone. This is soft-textured and energetic, with inner violet and lavender tones giving way to tart wild berries and hints of spice. The 2020 becomes rosy through the finale, tapering off with hints of chalk, while leaving the mouth to water for more. This zesty Frappato will excel best at the dinner table, where it will pair with a wide variety of cuisine." Vinous

Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG 2020
Cerasuolo di Vittoria - a seasoned local red with great tradition and just as much character. Typical fragrance of the wines from Vittoria: Aromas of red berries, cherries, prickly pear, ginger and fruit sweets. Tasty, extremely complex, fresh, lively and yet balanced. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Cerasuolo di Vittoria is dark and smoky, with black currants and crushed blueberries offset by a hint of animal musk. This is a soft and pure yet energetic expression, with a mix of tart wild berries and sour citrus tones adding tension. “Controdanza” Rosso Sicilia Noto DOC 2017
The country dance (controdanza) is a typical dance in which man and woman face each other and unite in graceful movements - depending on their gender, the dancers interpret the music in their own way. This wine is exactly the same: Nero d'Aola and Merlot - as is well known, opposites attract and, with the right intuition, can adjust wonderfully to each other, forming harmony and contrast at the same time.
Strong purple. Mulberry and plum contrast with incense and balsamic notes. The grapes all come from calcareous soils, which again bridges the gap and makes this young wine balancing and harmonious. Soft tannins and beautifully integrated delicate acidity carry Controdanza into a smooth, medium-length finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Minerally up front, with lots of tarry smoke and hot stone on the nose, notes that underscore the palate's dried raspberry, singed orange peel and tobacco flavors. Medium- to full-bodied and gusty, with a firm, focused finish." Wine Spectator
"Aromas of smoke, dried cherries, mushrooms and hints of eucalyptus. It's medium-to full-bodied with plenty of earthy, umami notes and citrus peel. Light tannins." James Suckling

Nocera Rosso Sicilia Nocera DOC 2019
Nocera - this noble vine is grown on only a few hectares in the province of Messina, on a spectacular vineyard surrounded by the sea. Bright garnet red, original scent of white pepper, cherries, pelargonium and summer fruits. Convincing the typical fresh-fruity taste of this old Sicilian grape. A fine salty vein in the spicy final. An unforgettable experience from the Planeta dependency Capo Milazzo on the coast north of Etna. SUPERIORE.DE
"Nocera is one of the lesser-known indigenous grapes found on the northern corner of the island of Sicily, where it has been cultivated since ancient Roman times, but it has been largely supplanted by more common Italian and international varieties better resistant to disease. This offering of about 13,000 bottles is a great introduction to this storied grape. The Planeta 2019 Sicilia Nocera offers a very silky and smooth personality, showing tight and nicely focused aromas of wild berry, cassis, wild plum and fresh rose. This is a lean to mid-weight expression that would pair with veal involtini." Robert Parker

“Dorilli” Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico DOCG 2017
Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico Dorilli is named after the vineyard Dorilla from which the grapes originate and this in turn after the nearby river Dirillo. Fine and elegant with light wood tones from the ageing, juicy fresh until the long final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium-intense red; caramel, barrel, then pronounced raspberry fruit, inviting; raspberry fruit also in the mouth, fine-tart, juicy, drinkable, long." (JLF) Merum
"The Planeta 2017 Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico Dorilli shows a medium dark ruby color and offers straightforward aromas of cherry, wild berry and plum. This was a hot vintage in Sicily (and elsewhere in Italy), and you feel the extra heat and power as a result, although the alcohol content registers at a modest 13%. The wine closes with characteristic aromas of toasted pistachio and black olive." Robert Parker
"A pure and juicy note of raspberry ganache is underscored by hints of toast and candied kumquat in this elegant, medium-bodied red. Lightly chalky tannins provide definition for the creamy flavor range, and spice and smoke notes accent the raspberry fruit as it echoes on the finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2017 Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico Dorilli pulls you close to the glass with an enticing bouquet that mixes wild herbs, smoke, black cherry and hints of animal musk. It’s deeply textural, contrasting a velvety wave of ripe black fruits against salty acids and chalky mineral tones. While youthfully dense, the 2017 boasts a primary intensity, as if you can sense all of the skins, pulp and seeds of the grapes, coating the palate in notes of tart raspberry and licorice, along with a hint of spiced citrus that balances the expression perfectly. The Dorilli is beautiful today but also well-suited for medium-term cellaring." Vinous

“Eruzione 1614” Nerello Mascalese Sicilia DOC 2018
In the history of Etna, the eruption of 1614 is legendary, as it lasted ten years and is thus to date the longest recorded eruption of the volcano that is still active today. A very impressive and fitting name for Planeta's Etna series of equally impressive wines.
It could hardly be more autochthonous: this excellent wine from the Nerello Mascalese grape comes from the hotspot on the east coast of Sicily, from the slopes of Mount Etna. Brilliant bright cherry red, fine scent of raspberry and blood orange, gripping, taut acidity, silky tannin and a buoyant elegance with beautiful minerality. Great, long and unique! SUPERIORE.DE
"Light red; reductive, discreetly fruity-foliagey, not intense; delicate attack, fine, depth of fruit, then also power and tannin." Merum
"Sparkling, brightening ruby. Appealing and open nose, opens with notes of raspberry, some blackberry, fine spice in the background. Lots of present tannin on the palate, hearty bite at the core, firm pressure on the final, juicy and salty." Falstaff
"As if you can smell the ashen volcanic soils that these vines grow in, the 2018 Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 wafts up smoky and musky, with a complement of cherry and dried strawberry that fully completes the experience. This is soft and fleshy in feel, boasting a noticeable inner sweetness nicely balanced by brisk acids and pretty inner florals." Vinous
"Pretty plum and raspberry fruit flavors are accented by a fine, aromatic thread of dried thyme, smoky mineral and rosehip in this harmonious, light- to medium-bodied red." Wine Spectator
"The 2018 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 is a beautifully elegant and streamlined wine that reflects the precision and careful winemaking that is a hallmark of the Planeta family. This wine opens to fine and nuanced aromas of wild berry, cassis and rose. Etched mineral notes and light spice frame a core of pretty fruit. This is a classic Etna red that can be stretched out to a 10-year drinking window if desired, although there's no reason not to enjoy this bottle straight out of the gate." Robert Parker

“Maroccoli” Syrah Sicilia Menfi DOC 2017
Fresh, bright ruby. The Syrah convinces with its intense and ripe bouquet with hints of figs, red currants, pickled cherries, blueberries, spices and vanilla. Velvety, noble tannins accompany the opulent and lively structure until the lingering final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark shining ruby with delicate violet. In the nose expressive, of many ripe black berries, toast, noble wood, after some time blackberry and black currant, reverberating with mint. Lush on the palate with tight tannin, stretches out on clear, fresh fruit, interwoven, substantial, clinging and long, great Syrah." Falstaff
"The Planeta 2017 Menfi Syrah Maroccoli delivers the rich intensity and sweetness of the grape and its sunny Sicilian DNA. This is a plush and loose-knit red wine with plenty of dark fruit, spice, tar and barbecue smoke. The main themes here underline the sweetness and natural succulence of the grape. This release of about 30,000 bottles marks a great opportunity to serve up some Sicilian veal rolls stuffed with breadcrumbs and perfumed with laurel leaf. “Burdese” Rosso Sicilia Menfi DOC 2016
Strong ruby red with garnet reflections. Dense and intense aroma of red fruits with notes of leather, earth, spices and minerals, with hints of vanilla and sandalwood. Full-bodied on the palate, well-defined tannins supported by a dense structure, leading into a long-lasting and very smooth final. A Bordeaux blend in a class of its own! SUPERIORE.DE
"With ample intensity and definition, this wine shows the power of two Bordeaux grapes, 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc, with the softness and sunny sweetness you might expect of a warm wine territory such as Sicily. The Planeta 2016 Sicilia Menfi Burdese shows a dark garnet appearance and medium rich concentration. Dried spice, scorched earth and black fruit appear on the bouquet. There is a dry, almost dusty quality to the tannins that are present but without any noticeable astringency. This would match up nicely with a classic Sicilian skillet of fennel sausage, orange slices and bread." Robert Parker

Carricante from Planeta's Etna vineyard is an exceptional growth full of freshness, energy and minerality. This noble grape variety thrives under exclusive conditions, on volcanic soils and at altitudes of 870 metres. A wonderfully complex pleasure that is always released for sale only two years after the harvest. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, rich straw yellow. Opens with fragrant notes of flint, fragrant bergamot, some peach, very appealing. Taut and clear on the palate, lots of juicy peach, so right to bite into, fresh and very good tension, citrus on the final." Falstaff
"Lemon-rind, pear and green-apple aromas follow through to a full body with a round, creamy palate of ripe and dried fruit that comes across mostly tropical. Creamy texture. Really tangy." James Suckling
"Racy acidity drives this lithe white, creating a lip-smacking frame for the expressive flavors of blood orange and white raspberry, slivered almond, petrol and grated ginger. Minerally finish." Wine Spectator
"Decidedly more savory than sweet and flinty as well, the 2018 Carricante Eruzione 1614 sends up a stunning bouquet of dried apricots, grilled orange and hints of white pepper. Its silky and pliant textures quickly gain a more tactile feel, as a mix of bright acids, saline-minerals, tart orchard fruits and sour citrus cascades across the palate. There are depths unseen here, as the 2018 displays a youthful density while remaining lifted, balanced and simply tempting the imagination as to what's to come with further cellaring. A beautiful Etna Carricante with a 10% addition of Riesling that shows tremendous tension. Well done." Vinous
"Delicious, crisp and showing a great depth of flavor, this white from the slopes of Mount Etna doles out juicy yellow apple, peach, wild herb and savory, almost salty, mineral notes. Made with Carricante and 10% Riesling, it has racy acidity, energy and captivating mineral tension before finishing on mouthwatering notes of honeyed lemon drop candy." Wine Enthusiast
"Slightly evolved and showing a deep sense of complexity and textural richness, the Planeta 2018 Sicilia Carricante Eruzione 1614 is yet another reason to love Etna's terrific Carricante grape. That extra time in bottle, tasted now three years after the harvest, produces dusty mineral definition and ashy volcanic tones. The wine is linear and precise with more austerity that raises the bar in terms of its food-pairing potential. A beautiful seafood platter with grilled prawns might do the trick." Robert Parker

"Radiant and delicious, this lovely sparkler from grapes grown on the slopes of Mount Etna opens with inviting aromas of Spanish broom, underbrush, yellow stone fruit and Mediterranean scrub. Passito Bianco di Noto DOC 2019 dolce
The grapes are harvested at the end of August when they are well ripe and then dried in 5 kg crates at 23⁰C in the fruit cellar. After about 40 days, when half of their weight has been lost, the grapes are pressed and the resulting must, which is particularly rich in sugar, ferments slowly at 18°C for over a month in stainless steel vats, where it remains until bottling.
Light golden yellow, fine bouquet of orange blossom, some quince, apricot and peach. Sparkling on the palate with surprisingly lively acidity, spreads nicely, in the long final again orange peel and some grapefruit. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, radiant straw yellow. Opens with notes of light honey, jasmine flowers and candied lemon peel. Full-bodied on the palate, balances the predominantly sweet impression at the beginning very well with a discreet bitter note, after dried lemon and orange peel, slightly resinous components in the final." Falstaff
"The Planeta 2019 Sicilia Passito di Noto (in a 500-milliliter bottle) is a delicately fragrant dessert wine with orange blossom or zagara, sweet almond paste, honey and night-blooming jasmine. What I like about this expression of air-dried Moscato Bianco is that the wine is never cloying or overly sweet. This opens the wine to more ambitious pairing possibilities such as aged or sharp cheeses or salty cold cuts. The wine sports a generous mid-weight style with nicely balanced acidity. This vintage shows nice fruit concentration too." Robert Parker

Without the drive and clear quality ideas of Francesca, Alessio and Santi Planeta, Sicily would perhaps not be one of Italy's most interesting wine regions today. For among the first Sicilian wines to free the Mediterranean island from its reputation for cheap mass-produced wine was none other than Planeta's magnificent and now world-famous Chardonnay.
The background to why the cousin trio did not immediately choose one of the many Sicilian grape varieties, but first chose a French one, is that in the 1980s the indigenous varieties were predominantly used for the production of cheap bulk wines. The ideal recipe for success was therefore to bring the unique island terroir to the outside world first and foremost with the help of grape varieties that were already internationally known – which ultimately secured the Sicilian winery a well-deserved ticket to the world's wine markets.
Planeta's Chardonnay thus demonstrated that Sicily has much more to offer than simple bulk wine. Over the past two decades, the three young winemakers have established themselves among the most important producers on the island thanks to their high quality standards. With over 390 hectares, the focus is now also on the incredibly exciting autochthonous grape varieties, which are cultivated by the family in the predestined wine regions of Sicily.
After a long period of research in the main wineries Ulmo and Dispensa near Menfi – where they still focus mainly on the production of international grape varieties – the Planetas also expanded further south to the area of Vittoria with the Dorilli winery and later to Noto with the construction of the Buonivini winery. These locations are mainly reserved for the indigenous grape varieties, such as Frappato or the popular Nero d'Avola. However, in the search for the most demanding cultivation zones on the island, they could not refrain from also settling on the lava-spitting Etna to create outstanding volcanic wines in the Feudo di Mezzo estate. Last but not least, the youngest winery, La Baronia, is located in Capo Milazzo, opposite the Aeolian Islands, where the ancient grape variety Nocera thrives. Grinning, Francesca tells us in conversation, "And we tell ourselves every year that this will be the last winery."
So from west to east, the Planeta name is spread across a whole six boutique wineries. In order to inspire with more top Sicilian wines, the philosophy of the business puts the preservation and exploration of the breathtakingly beautiful territory at the very top of the list. Their rich and unique wine selection, with uncompromising quality and a Mediterranean flavour, undoubtedly reflects the true potential of the popular Italian wine island. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the Sicily brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate. Enormous credit goes to them." Robert Parker
