In the Arbëresh dialect of Basilicata – the language that the Albanian immigrants of the 15th century brought with them to the south of Italy – verha simply means: the wine. Elena Fucci is best known for her Titolo, one of the finest Aglianico del Vulture wines in the world. The Contrada Catavatta is right next door – the same volcanic soils of tuff, ash and pumice, the same altitude at the foot of Monte Vulture, the same manual labour. The vines here, however, were threatened with decay. Elena Fucci saved them: Not with great ambitions, but with the simple conviction that good soil should not waste good wine. 100% Sauvignon Blanc, spontaneous fermentation, steel, no touch of wood. A white wine that tells the story of the Vulture terroir in a language that is rarely heard there: fresh, direct, mineral.

The slopes of the extinct Monte Vulture, at 600 metres above sea level – a terroir of compressed volcanic ash, tuff and pumice that gives each wine an unmistakable minerality. The vines of the Verha line lay fallow here for years until they were awakened by Elena Fucci to create a new small line. As a rule, Aglianico is not a grape variety that gives pleasure immediately (and very young). Anyone who knows Titolo knows this: structure, tannin, concentration – wines for years, not for tonight. Verha Rosso is Elena Fucci's other answer to the same volcano. From young vines in Contrada Catavatta, harvested by hand in small crates at the end of September, spontaneously fermented in steel, twelve days of maceration – no more. Six months in steel, six months in bottle. No wood to make the Aglianico heavier than it wants to be at this moment. The result is an Aglianico that is rarely encountered: lean, fresh, easy to drink – with fine tannins and that volcanic character that clearly localises this wine.

Nevertheless, it finishes remarkably fresh, leaving a subtle hint of mineral tannins that remind the Basilicata connoisseur that this is a young Aglianico in its purest form. The name says it all – and nothing less. Titolo is Elena Fucci's great promise: one of the most concentrated, structurally rich Aglianico del Vulture wines ever, from the oldest vines of the Contrada Solagna del Titolo at the foot of Monte Vulture. The Pink Edition is the same address, the same conviction – but a different phase in the life of the vine. For the Rosato, Elena Fucci chooses the youngest vines of the Titolo vineyard: vines between six and ten years old that give more fruit than structure, whose vigour gives the wine energy instead of heaviness. The grapes are deliberately harvested a little earlier than for Titolo Rosso – first week of October, by hand, in small crates, immediately into the cellar. This is followed by cooling, then four days of cold maceration on the skins – cryomaceration – to extract colour, aroma and the volcanic mineral character without taking away tannin or weight. Gentle pressing, steel tank, two and a half months maturation, unfiltered in the bottle.

In 2000, buyers were at the door. The Fucci family had almost given up on the six hectares of vineyards that their grandfather Generoso had acquired at the foot of Monte Vulture in the 1960s – the parents teachers, the children on their way into the world. At the last moment, daughter Elena decided otherwise. Not out of calculation, but out of a feeling that she herself later described as "a stab in the heart": she could not accept that a foreign name would do something great with the oldest vines of the Vulture while she watched.

Elena Fucci is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the winery in 2025 with this rare special edition Titolo from the 2021 vintage. 2021 was the last harvest that her grandfather was able to experience before his death. The grapes come from a vineyard plot that is over 80 years old. Unlike the famous Titolo Classico, it was refined for 24 months in a conical oak barrel and then matured for a further 12 months in the bottle.

Titolo Superiore is a selection that is refined for 12 months in tonneaux, followed by 12 months in used barrels and finally 12 months in the bottle. No writer could have better invented the story of Elena Fucci and her wine Titolo. Elena grew up in a house that stood amidst her grandfather's vineyards. Like her brothers, she wanted to study and leave the rather lonely area. When the first buyers came to the door to visit the vineyards, she changed her mind, convinced grandfather and father to keep the vineyards, commuted some time between her university in Pisa and Basilicata, came back as a doctor of oenology and founded a vineyard where she produced only one wine. And what a guy! Titolo. For years one of the highest awarded wines in Italy.

Titolo means title, heading. The wine is the headliner of Basilicata. The Aglianico grape variety grows at around 600 metres above sea level below the extinct Monte Vulture volcano. The variation here is called Aglianico del Vulture. This is also the name of the DOC area, which covers only 1,500 hectares in the province of Potenza. 7 hectares of which are Elena Fucci's refuge. The vines are around 60 years old and stand on ancient, weathered volcanic rock. Up here the wind always blows, the seasons change from quite cold winters to quite hot summers, as well as the temperature differences between day and night are quite extreme. Wind, mineral-rich volcanic soil and temperature changes - ideal conditions. Anyone who has ever seen her grapes will never forget them, they are real splendid specimens.
Decades ago Aglianico often landed in this area on the tables of the nobles. That's how he got the nickname "Barolo of the South". The comparison is not at all absurd, because elegance, color and structure as well as shelf life can quite resemble a powerful Barolo.
