![Etna Rosato DOC 2025]()
Etna Rosato DOC 2025
The Rosato was born in 2007 – because Marco de Grazia’s three-year-old daughter, Elena, insisted on it. There was a red wine, there was a white. Why not one in pink too? The winery was already painted pink. All that was missing was the wine. De Grazia, who had not planned to make a Rosato until then, set to work. The result is no frivolous summer wine, even if it is often enjoyed in summer. De Grazia’s stated ideal for his Rosato is: "il corpo di un bianco e l’anima di un rosso". And he adds: "gioioso senza essere frivolo; tensione senza essere austero." Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio from vines aged between 25 and 60 years on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, at altitudes of between 600 and 900 metres, on volcanic soils from the estate’s various vineyards.

Etna Bianco DOC 2025 (BIO)
In the early 2000s, Marco de Grazia, an American wine merchant with Tuscan roots, began systematically buying land on Mount Etna. It wasn’t because the volcano was the talk of the town at the time – it wasn’t. But because de Grazia, who had been importing Sicilian wines into the US since the 1990s, recognised something that many locals had not yet seen: that these soils, these Alberello vines, these altitudes between 600 and 900 metres, possessed something that could not be found anywhere else on the island. Tenuta delle Terre Nere – the Black Earths – was one of the sparks that ignited the Etna phenomenon. The Etna Bianco is the cornerstone of this vision: a blend of four indigenous grape varieties – carricante, Catarratto, Grecanico and Minnella – from several vineyards on the cool northern slope of the volcano, at altitudes of 600 to 900 metres. The soil is black volcanic earth, rich in minerals but low in nutrients – — ideal for vines that need to dig deep. Hand-harvested in early October, cold sedimentation, fermentation at 13 to 15°C in stainless steel tanks.

"There are around 1,500 olive trees on our estate. Many of them are centuries old. And in their presence, we feel a sense of duty to a historical memory that flows through our veins today. I would never dare to say that our oil is the best in the world. There is no such thing as the best oil in the world. “Le Vigne Niche Caselle” Bianco Etna Superiore DOC 2024 (BIO)
Milo is the only municipality on the entire slopes of Mount Etna whose white wines are permitted to bear the suffix ‘superiore’. This distinction was enshrined in the DOC regulations in 1968 – and which takes account of the microclimate of this eastern flank: twice the rainfall compared to the northern side, an eastern exposure towards the Ionian Sea, cooling sea breezes, and volcanic soils composed of ash and Ripiddu lapilli. Amidst the mists of the summer nights that Marco de Grazia describes in his writings on Milo, the Carricante grape ripens here to a level of precision it achieves nowhere else on the volcano.

“Le Vigne Niche Salice” Bianco Etna Superiore DOC 2024 (BIO)
The area around the small town of Milo is the only vineyard site on Mount Etna where an Etna Bianco may be bottled as a ‘Superiore’ – and for good reason: on this steep vineyard, consisting of dozens of small terraces, only Carricante may be planted. The vines are trained like small saplings on chestnut wood stakes. The east-facing aspect and the proximity of the sea allow the grapes to ripen late, resulting in very consistent acidity levels and, ultimately, a white wine of aromatic finesse and freshness that is unrivalled even on Mount Etna. More floral and citrusy on the nose than the standard Carricante, the Superiore also exhibits slightly more body, acidity, depth and finesse. Its elegant acidity makes it vibrantly fresh and long-lasting, ensuring an exciting drinking experience and excellent ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE

“Le Vigne Niche Santo Spirito” Bianco Etna DOC 2024 (BIO)
It was 2007 when Marc de Grazia tasted a 42-year-old Carricante for the first time – and that moment changed everything. Three different occasions, three different bottles, but always the same revelation: a wine of such impeccable beauty and youthful vigour despite its venerable age that the Etna pioneer knew immediately: he wanted to create a wine like this himself. This vision gave rise to Le Vigne Niche Santo Spirito, a homage to the past and at the same time a manifesto for the future. In the Contrada Santo Spirito, at an altitude of 700 to 800 metres in Castiglione di Sicilia, the Carricante vines thrive on deep black volcanic soil, rich in ash from past eruptions. Here, where for centuries only red grapes were cultivated, Marc dared to do the seemingly impossible: world-class, single-varietal white crus.

This single-vineyard Carricante comes from the small Montalto vineyard on the southern slope of Etna at an altitude of around 950 metres. It is the most balanced and at the same time most exciting of all Etna Bianco from Terre Nere in terms of its overall impression and flavour; the whole Etna package is present here in exactly the right dose: Minerality, salinity, fruitiness and a perfect hint of orange peel and flint on the nose. “Le Vigne Niche Calderara Sottana” Bianco Etna DOC 2024 (BIO)
While Santo Spirito unfolds its floral elegance at an altitude of 700 to 800 metres, Calderara Sottana is rooted in a completely different world. Only a few kilometres away, yet geologically different, this contrada lies at an altitude of 620 to 670 metres directly next to the winery – and here the extraordinary complexity of the Etna terroir is revealed. Marc de Grazia discovered one of Sicily's rarest treasures in Calderara Sottana: pure elliptical terroir, formed 60,000 years ago by volcanic eruptions. Of the hundreds of contrade on Etna, only three have this pristine geological fingerprint and Calderara is one of them. While the Santo Spirito impresses with its crystalline minerality and maritime freshness, the Calderara Sottana is more opulent, creamy and warmer.

Whilst neighbouring Guardiola struggles with barren, stony soils, Santo Spirito boasts lush vegetation – deep, rich volcanic ash that nourishes a luxuriant carpet of grass and vigorous vines that display their bountiful vigour.

In 2007, Marco de Grazia discovered a tiny plot in Moganazzi – one of the two vineyards which, together with Guardiola, have always been regarded as the finest terroirs in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia. He bought it without hesitation. The problem: just three barriques of wine. Too little for the market. Too good not to be made into wine. De Grazia decided to donate all the bottles to a charity project run by the Meyer Children’s Hospital in Florence. He had his daughter Elena design the labels. The first ones were created when she was two years old. For ten years, Moganazzi was a gift to sick children. Then, in 2017, de Grazia managed to buy a neighbouring plot and lease another one. For the first time, Moganazzi appeared as an official Terre Nere cru.

“Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro Delle Rose” Rosso Etna DOC 2024
Feudo di Mezzo is perhaps the largest Contrada in the entire Etna DOC – in terms of its homogeneous character, yet with marked differences in quality from plot to plot. Marco de Grazia compares it to the Clos de Vougeot in Burgundy: a vast area capable of producing great wine in its finest parts, and merely good wine in its weaker ones. The best plot in Feudo di Mezzo – de Grazia’s plot – is called: Il Quadro delle Rose. The Rose Plot. Castiglione di Sicilia, 650 metres, north-facing. 1.5 hectares, vines aged between 40 and 80 years on deep, ash-rich volcanic soils. 5,500 bottles per vintage. Il Quadro delle Rose is always the first vineyard to be harvested – and de Grazia explains why this shapes its character: the earlier harvest yields the most open, generous and soft wines of the entire estate.

“Guardiola” Rosso Etna DOC 2024
Where it all began. 2002 – the first vintage of Tenuta delle Terre Nere – did not come from just any plot. It came from Guardiola: the estate’s highest vineyard, the most challenging, the oldest. For the first Etna wine of his life, Marco de Grazia chose the toughest start he could find. And he gave it two further firsts: the first time an Etna Rosso bore the Contrada name on the label. And the first time it was bottled in a Burgundy-style bottle. The Contrada Guardiola lies at an altitude of 900 to 1,000 metres – at the very edge of the Etna DOC. Any higher up, there are no more grapes. The soils are poor: sand, volcanic pumice, basalt scree – – the bare minimum a vine needs. The terraces become narrower with increasing altitude; vineyard work there is carried out exclusively by hand and is exceptionally difficult. The vines have stood on this soil for over a hundred years – on their own roots, ungrafted, because phylloxera never reached these heights on Etna. Pre-phylloxera. Alive.

On the far north-western edge of the Etna DOC, where the cold reigns and time seems to stand still, lies San Lorenzo – one of the volcano’s three holy grails. Here, at an altitude of 750 metres in the municipality of Randazzo, we encounter a geological marvel: a pure elliptical terroir, formed 60,000 years ago by the explosive activity of the Ellittico crater. Marc de Grazia recognised something extraordinary in San Lorenzo – a place of aristocratic purity. Of the hundreds of contrade on Mount Etna, only three possess this unadulterated elliptical heritage: Bocca d’Orzo, Calderara and San Lorenzo. Millennia of lava flows have buried all the older soils, leaving behind only tiny, precious fragments of these ancient volcanic sands.

In the heart of the northern Etna amphitheatre, where time seems to be carved in stone, lies Calderara Sottana, the realm of black stones. Here, at an altitude of 600 to 650 metres in the municipality of Randazzo, one of the volcano’s geological mysteries is revealed: a terroir so rich in stones that, in the most characteristic areas, the soil disappears beneath them – fist-sized, light chunks of black pumice and basalt. The name Calderara evokes the warmth that the black stones absorb during the day and release back into the earth during the cold nights. Marc de Grazia recognised Calderara Sottana as one of the three sacred contrade of the pure elliptical heritage – —that precious geological legacy resulting from the activity of the Ellittico crater between 60,000 and 15,000 years ago. Of all the crus within the Etna DOC, these are undoubtedly the stoniest soils, even stonier than the aristocratic San Lorenzo to the west. Here, ancient vines aged between 50 and 100 years take root in this mineral labyrinth of volcanic rock, where every plant fights for every centimetre of fertile soil.

“Calderara Sottana Edizione Speciale” Rosso Etna DOC 2021 late release
Between 60,000 and 15,000 years BC, Mount Etna eroded its old centre – the Ellittico eruptive complex collapsed in on itself. What remains are some of the oldest surface soils on the volcano that can still be cultivated. Subsequent lava flows buried the older layers beneath them; only small, rare plots of the Ellittico survived on the surface. On the northern side of Mount Etna, there are three contrade with pure Ellittico terroir: Bocca d’Orzo, Calderara and San Lorenzo. Three out of hundreds. Calderara – the name evokes warmth. The stones here, fist-sized and light, a mixture of black pumice and basalt, absorb the sun’s heat during the day and slowly release it back into the soil during the cold nights. Without this invisible thermal balance, the ripening process at an altitude of 600 to 650 metres would be quite different. Don pep, who tended these vineyards for seventy years, found the most precise word to describe the wines from this site: ‘cremosi’. It’s true – and it couldn’t be put any better.

The Contrada Bocca d'Orzo – , long celebrated as one of the most significant vineyards on the entire volcano, together with the neighbouring San Lorenzo – , vanished beneath the lava. And because no one had bottled Bocca d’Orzo separately before 1981, its history vanished with it. There are no bottles, no notes, no reference material. Only the memory – and the eyes of old farmers, which light up when you ask them. What the wines from there must have been like can be gauged from a single fact: as the lava cooled, half a dozen winegrowers, whose plots had been buried, covered the solidified lava flow with tonnes of earth and replanted – in the hope of regaining their lost greatness. That is not a rational act. That is faith.

“Prephylloxera” Rosso Etna DOC 2024
In the tranquil eternity of Calderara Sottana, where time follows its own rules, lies a sanctuary: La Vigna di Don pep. Here, on barely 0.8 hectares of ancient volcanic soil, the vines have worked a miracle: they survived the great phylloxera disaster that ravaged the whole of Europe more than a century ago and destroyed millions of vineyards. These few rows of ungrafted Nerello Mascalese vines, which have been rooted in the stony soils of the elliptical terroir since 1880, are living witnesses to over 140 years of viticultural history. They stand there like aged princesses in a royal garden; their charming wrinkles tell of generations they have seen come and go, whilst they themselves have remained steadfast.

You need good shoes if you want to go to your vineyards with Marco de Grazia. Best mountain boots. Because that's where you actually go mountaineering. Yeah, you could call it climbing in some places.
Marco de Grazia is well known in the international fine wine scene. You could say worldwide. He was one of the first in Italy to bring together several up-and-coming wineries and was thus able to achieve remarkable export successes. He was co-inventor and engine of the Barolo Boys.
In his constant search for good and authentic wines, he arrived in Sicily in 2002 and tasted Rosso dell'Etna - red wine from Etna. And was fascinated. From the wine, from the bizarre landscape with the black soils and from the introverted people who harvested there in many working hours the lowest yields of gnarled ancient wine trees. That's why there weren't twenty wineries left. Today there are ten times as many and wine from Etna is a sought-after speciality.
Marco and his brother Iano de Grazia, who joined in, are not innocent of this at all. Their commitment and fairly rapid success sparked the interest of some major wine producers, who eventually all invested around Etna.
The highest sites of the Tenuta delle Terre Nere stretch almost up to one third to the northern flank of the mighty towering and always smoking volcano Etna. From about 600 m up to almost 1,000 m above sea level. The higher, the steeper it gets. And rockier. The highest sites - called Contrade here - are real rock terraces. These "rocks" are black. Weathered lava. Hence Tenuta delle Terre Nere. The manor with the black floors.
You could write a book when Marco pulls his floppy hat into his face and starts telling stories. Because he has a lot to tell. From his locations, which he also likes to call "cru" and with which he draws comparisons with Burgundy. If one compares the wines, one also understands this, because "Rosso dell'Etna" from individual sites (Cru or here Contrade) could be understood as a combination of Barbaresco and Burgundy.
The winery is located on the northern slopes of the volcano, between Solicchiata and Randazzo. In the middle of the combed green of the vine rows on black soil lies the striking red house with the cellar. And here it is again, the comparison with Burgundy - "if one would compare the wine-growing area around Etna with Burgundy, then these sites would be here the Côte d'Or des Etna" says Marco de Grazia.
Already in his first vintages (2002) Marco de Grazia decided to vinify the individual "Crus" separately, because the soils and microclimates are so different. Even within a single small plot, which may have one hectare, the differences can be considerable due to the former eruptions and lava flows, the soils being of different ages - and a height difference of 200 metres.
Due to the altitude, it is relatively cool and always windy, even in midsummer. Offshore wind - after all, Mount Etna is 3,350 m high. And during the day the winds blow from the nearby sea across the land. All sites have been farmed organically since the beginning, some of them have been in organic farming for generations.
Feudo di Mezzo is the largest site in the region, which is why its volcanic soil is interspersed with various ancient lava flows. 600-700 m above sea level with 40-80 year old vines. The heart is called "Il Quadro delle Rose", from here comes a very elegant and complex Etna Rosso DOC, from Nerello Mascalese.
Caldera Sottana is the steepest and hardest rocky vineyard. Grapes - 50 to 100 years old - only 5 tons per hectare. 14 ha red (98% Nerello Mascalese, 2% Nerello Cappuccio) and 3.5 ha white (Carricante). A floor made of volcanic ash, black pumice stone and solid volcanic rock.
One hectare of it, divided into two small plots next to the cellar, is called "La Vigna di Don Peppino". These vineyards have survived the phylloxera and are still root true vines, more than 130 years old. A man cared for her all her life, for more than 70 years; without him they would hardly have survived. Today they are magnificent little trees. Low yield, but elegant and structured. Thanks to Don Peppino.
Santo Spirito is the most scenic location with a great view. At 700-760m above sea level, 40-100 year old vines grow on "younger" volcanic soils rich in nutrients and minerals. Around the vineyards grows a lot of green, meadows and wild herbs, and so are the wines from this location. Quite intense and finely spicy.
San Lorenzo is the "newcomer", but with sticks up to one hundred years old. 4 hectares of magnificent Nerello grapes on volcanic and rocky soils. At about 750 m above sea level you can reach mini yields of about 5 t/ha. These small berry grapes produce complex, finely structured and elegant red wines that are among the best in the region.
Guardiola is the highest "Contrada". One of the first vineyards to be purchased by Marco di Grazia and his brother Iano. 800 to almost 1,000 m above sea level, windy, cool, barren. Volcano, basalt, hard and steep. Extreme handwork, many hours of work for just three and a half to four and a half tons of grapes. This effort is only worthwhile for lovers, because they appreciate this herbal spice, this wonderful, clear dark fruit, structure and complexity, as well as elegance and potential for many years. "The wines of Marco di Grazia have helped to put Etna at the top of the geological map. Its consistency in winemaking is one of the most important guarantees for the future of this up-and-coming wine region". Robert Parker
