Etna Bianco DOC 2022 (BIO)
Etna Bianco from Terre Nere offers a surprising level of depth and sophistication. The cuvée of Carricante, Catarratto, Grecanico, Inzolia and Minnella smells of grapefruit, quince, dried sage and wild mint. Fine mineral notes on the palate, develops elegantly with notes of lemon curd. The balance is wonderful. Seamless. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Etna Bianco is smoky in the glass, exciting the senses with a burst of crushed rocks and raw almonds before giving way to citrus-stringed peach. It’s soothingly soft and enveloping with weighty textures lifted by vibrant acidity. Masses of mineral-laden orchard fruits and sweet spices collide on the palate. The 2022 finishes remarkably fresh yet grippy and long, leaving the mouth watering for more. The level of complexity here is off the charts for an entry-level Etna Bianco. Yum!" Vinous
"It shows attractive aromas of citrus and stone fruit with hints of shellfish, with stony and ashy undertones. Medium-bodied, tangy and fresh with lively acidity and a sophisticated mineral backbone. Steady and concentrated with a crisp finish." James Suckling

“Le Vigne Niche Santo Spirito” Bianco Etna DOC 2021 (BIO)
This Carricante from vines up to 100 years old from a small single vineyard gives no indication of its varietal and terroir origin. Fine fruity aroma, mineral and with a fresh sea breeze. Powerful, well structured, fine wood note, balanced and long on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE
"A concentrated yet surprisingly lean nose with fragrant aromas of white flowers, and fresh apricots and lemons. The acidity dances on the tongue, giving the wine a nice drive. On the palate, slightly nutty flavours of green walnuts, orange and fennel. Filigree and juicy, a bit salty in the finish. An approachable, albeit complex and grippy wine." Vinum
"The 2021 Etna Bianco Le Vigne Niche Santo Spirito opens slowly in the glass, hinting at baked apples and autumnal spice lifted by the suggestion of fresh mint. It's elegant and silky on the palate, seamless is the word, with ripe orchard fruits and lemon complicated by savory herbal tones. It finishes long and potent, seaming to melt away from the palate slowly with Asian pear and spice notes." Vinous
"Inviting nose with flinty character and notes of lemongrass, pears and lilies. Medium-bodied with consistent acidity and rounded citrus notes. Focused, with a wonderful texture. Subtle spice on the finish." James Suckling
"The Etna Bianco Santo Spirito 2021 is brilliant and effervescent, with sharp contours and crisp lines. This single-vineyard expression shows floral notes of white rose and acacia." Wine Advocate

This single-vineyard Carricante comes from the small vineyard Montalto, situated on the southern slope of Etna at an altitude of approx. 950m. It is the most balanced and at the same time the most exciting of all Etna Bianco from Terre Nere in its overall impression and aroma, here the whole Etna package is present in exactly the right dose: Minerality, saltiness, fruitiness and a perfect hint of orange peel and flint on the nose. On the palate, it is vibrant and fine, of an almost Burgundian dimension, full of finesse and length. SUPERIORE.DE

Here comes a fairly new single-vineyard wine, similar in style to Santo Spirito, but with an "autumnal" component. Light ruby red, gravel, vanilla and a subtle hint of mint on the nose, plus some cranberry and cherry. Then fresh and exciting on the palate with a sweet and sour component and a delicate bitter vein. Compact tannin that certainly deserves a few more years of bottle ageing. The final is herbaceous, spicy and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"This is the third vintage made by Tenuta delle Terre Nere as a vineyard-designate wine, although Moganazzi has been farmed since 2009. The 2020 Etna Rosso Moganazzi shows a fun trajectory with grippy fruit tannins that lean into silky sensations over the palate. In fact, an appropriate word to describe this wine is caressing. The bouquet offers bright cassis, herb, flower and crushed stone. This site is located between Passopisciaro and Solicchiata at 700 to 730 meters in elevation. It offers a bit more volume and concentration in terms of mouthfeel." Wine Advocate
"It shows dark cherries, dried flowers, bitter cocoa, slate, nutmeg and mocha. It is medium to full-bodied with firm, creamy and very well integrated tannins. A lot of power. And yet everything under control. Long lasting. Only 4,000 bottles. Already fantastic, but even better after 2023." James Suckling

“Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro Delle Rose” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro Delle Rose smells of roses and small red berries. It is a heavy, tannic wine that requires a little patience but finds its balance with time. A wine of exceptional finesse and great intellect. SUPERIORE.DE
"Pure cherry fruit here, reminiscent of kirsch, with orange peel and an ashy, mineral backbone to it, almost like cracked flint or gunpowder. Similar aromas and flavors on both the nose and on the palate. Medium- to full-bodied, really tense and firm with chalky tannins and a lingering crushed granite and rock sensation on the palate. Seashells, too. Long. Try after 2025." James Suckling

Guardiola is an intoxicating Etna Rosso with great aromas of spices, crushed red and black cherries, wet stones and mineral hints. The palate is persistent, with great fruit and full of subtle elegance. The tension here adds beautiful energy and power to the palate. A terroir-typical masterpiece, be sure to aerate beforehand! SUPERIORE.DE
"Depths of black cherry, clove, sage, rosemary and ashen stone make resisting the 2021 Etna Rosso Guardiola impossible. This is an especially lifted and mineral effort, with crisp raspberry and cranberry fruits that take on a crunchy sensation as they travel across the palate. Vibrant acidity maintains a lovely balance, cutting through the 2021’s silken textures like a hot knife through butter. This tapers off long, sinewy and structured, and yet the mouth is left watering for more." Vinous
"The nose is dusty with notes of vibrant red cherry, candied orange peel and pomegranate skin with crushed terracotta brick and dried flowers. Textured and polished with dusty tannins evenly distributed across the palate offering a mineral, granite presence on the palate with attractive red fruits underneath. Tense and persistent." Santo Spirito is a wonderfully complex wine that always remains in balance. It combines firmness, power, structure and density with the aromas of dark cherries, pomegranate, blood oranges and spicy herbal notes and closes with a furiously long final. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Santo Spirito is dark and dusty in character, yet impossible to resist. It slowly unleashes a core of crushed raspberries, mint leaf and sage. It’s silky and refined, with cooling acidity and pretty strawberry fruits complemented by rosy inner florals. A cascade of licorice and crunchy tart cranberry defines the finale, as the 2021 tapers off youthfully tense, nearly puckering the cheeks, yet only lightly structured. Patience is recommended, yet it will be hard to maintain." Vinous
"This wine shows notes of dark berries with red liquorice and fresh, ripe peaches. Intense with hints of wet clay soil and undertones of bark. Full and consistent on the palate with a firm backbone of chalky tannins that continue for minutes. Lots of tension and energy. Lingers on the palate for a long time and transitions into a rather soft and powdery mouthfeel. Needs some more time. Taste after 2025." James Suckling

"The 2021 Etna Rosso Moganazzi is quite delicate and coy. It slowly evolves with a nuanced blend of incense, dried roses and exotic citrus. This is supple, round and medium-bodied, with zesty acidity and a crystalline core of minerals that add traction as tart wild berry fruits slowly saturate. It finishes a bit short, yet impactful, leaving a bitter raspberry tinge and grippy tannins that tug the cheeks." Vinous
"It has a fresh and fragrant nose with beautiful cherries and raspberries as well as rose petals, liquorice and crushed stones. The palate is firm and straightforward, with medium body and lively acidity. It's hard to draw a line between the tannins and the earthy, mineral aspect, as both create a chalky mouthfeel and lead to a long, textured finish. I like the finesse of this wine, although it is still quite dense and firm." James Suckling

Every year one of the great single-vineyard wines of the Tenuta, representing in a highly complex way the special terroir of the high altitudes on Etna. Dark red fruits, orange peel and flowers on the nose. Then juicy fruit, wonderful depth and a finely chiselled tannin structure. A subtle spiciness on the finish and always present the outstanding structure, length and elegance! SUPERIORE.DE
"From the moment the glass is tilted, the 2021 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana Vineyard shines through as crushed stones, ash and sweet smoke give way to vivid black cherries and autumnal spice. The 2021 Etna Rosso is elegant, silky and deeply textural, with salty mineral tones and gobs of red and black fruits, all perfectly maintained by a core of vibrant acidity. This is complex yet full of energy and sultry depths, tapering off saline and structured with grippy tannins that frame a lasting resonance of licorice and plums. These old vines handled the drought of the vintage beautifully, showing only in the grit of its tannins. Otherwise, the 2021 is pure magic." Vinous
"This wine is livelier with red berries, blood oranges, light spices and a hint of terracotta. Medium-bodied, juicy and fruit-driven with tangy acidity and dusty tannins. A hint of bitter orange on the finish. Long and chalky, but very attractive and enjoyable now." James Suckling

“San Lorenzo” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Strictly limited in each vintage, the Cru San Lorenzo comes from 4 hectares of vineyards in the district of the same name in the town of Randazzo. The vines are over 70 years old and grow about 750 metres above sea level, the soil consists almost exclusively of fine volcanic sand. The terroir in the small Contrada San Lorenzo was formed by lava flows and deposits of volcanic origin, which were formed between 60,000 and 15,000 years ago. This exceptional wine is particularly rich, fruity and has very soft tannins that make it velvety and lush on the palate and provide a never-ending finish. Great! SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo seduces with its perfumed blend of roses, sour cherries, tangerine and a cinnamon dusting. This is pure elegance, lifted and refined, with dazzling acidity and a wave of pure mineral-tinged fruits that crackle and pop across the palate. It’s complex yet truly delicious and maintains marvelous energy, even as a web of fine-grained tannins reminds the taster of its youthful state. Even today, the 2021 San Lorenzo is dreamy and a total pleasure. That said, the future remains very bright." Vinous
"This wine shows a very attractive spicy character with red cherries and raspberries accompanied by dried summer herbs, candied oranges and red spices. Also dry earth. Medium to full-bodied. Very even and seamless tannin structure. Refined and polished with a dusty earthiness leading to a dry, delicate finish." James Suckling

"The 2019 Etna Rosso Moganazzi is spicy and intense, blasting up from the glass with crushed ashen stone, red currants, wild strawberries, sage and hints of cedar. It’s rich and pliant upon entry, yet quickly firms up through a mix of mineral-tinged berries, brisk acids and grippy tannins that arrive quite early and hold firm. That said, there is plenty of primary fruit and depth to balance, as it tapers off structured and long, leaving hints of licorice and inner rose to linger. The cheeks pucker, saturated with youthful tannin, as the 2018 Calderara Sottana clamps down hard, leaving only a hint of licorice and tart red berries in its wake. Close your eyes, and you might think this was a young, top-shelf Serralunga Barolo." Vinous
"So floral and fresh with cherries, watermelon, apples, crushed stone and flowers on the nose. It's medium-to full-bodied with firm tannins and fresh, vivid acidity that takes you down the palate." James Suckling

“Calderara Sottana” Rosso Etna DOC 2019 · MAGNUM
Every year one of the great single-vineyard wines of the Tenuta, representing in a highly complex way the special terroir of the high altitudes on Etna. Dark red fruits, orange peel and flowers on the nose. Then juicy fruit, wonderful depth and a finely chiselled tannin structure. A subtle spiciness on the finish and always present the outstanding structure, length and elegance! SUPERIORE.DE
"Aromas of French oak, camphor and Mediterranean brush lead the nose. Reflecting the aromas, the linear palate features coconut, vanilla, raw oak and cranberry before a saline finish. Taut, fine-grained tannins provide support." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2019 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana slowly blossoms in the glass, unfurling with a layered and deep display of black cherries, licorice camphor and pine. Further swirling unlocks balsam herbs, plum sauce and dusty rose. It rushes the palate with a wave of silken textures, filling the senses with red currants, blueberry and hints of candied citrus. Fine tannins emerge through the finale, previously masked by ripe inner fruits, making for a lightly structured finish. A salty flourish gives way to hints of graphite and black licorice that linger on and on. While I’m accustomed to Calderara Sottana being one of the more structured and backward wines from the Terre Nere portfolio, the 2019 possesses an early appeal that I find quite attractive. That said, there’s an underlying power here that only cellaring will unlock." Vinous
"If you love big Barolos, then this Etna red is a wine for you! Packed with ripe damson-plum character, this is rich, concentrated and well-structured with concentrated tannins that build on the moderately dry, silky finish." James Suckling
"Sottana lies on an ancient lava flow and hosts centenarian vines. Spice and graphite blends with aromas of violet, berry fruits and Mediterranean scrub. Long and dynamic in the mouth, with a splendid savoury note a flinty, mineral undercurrent and lithe, polished tannins. Captivating complexity." Decanter

“Prephylloxera” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Etna Rosso Prephylloxera Vigna di Don pepis a breathtakingly elegant Etna Rosso in miniature. Dazzling pure dark red and infinitely wide fruit aroma. Of impeccable balance and structure on the palate. The tannins are present yet wonderfully elegant and balanced. An explosive wine made from 100 percent Nerello Mascalese - and from ancient vines in Calderara and Santo Spirito. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Prephylloxera La Vigna di Don pepCalderara Sottana is something to behold. The color alone baffles the mind: a translucent ruby that misleads the taster to expect a delicate and lifted effort. This opens slowly in the glass, smoky and intense, evolving with ash and rosemary suggestions. A core of crushed wild berries and exotic spice comes to the fore. It’s deeply textural yet deceptively energetic, with silken waves of dark red fruit that wash across the palate, leaving a salty staining of minerals and savory herbs in their wake. A complex web of fine-grained tannins clamps down hard, balanced by a twang residual acidity, as inner florals and hints of tangerine slowly dissipate. Patience will be required." Vinous
"This wine has impressive depth and complexity with an array of red and dark berries mixed with dark chocolate, ground spices and burnt orange peel. All these scents sit on a bed of smoked, ashy dark stones and wet asphalt undertones. Full and deep with very fine, silky tannins. So much tension and power here. It lasts for minutes and finishes with a seamless, textured finish. From old vines from before the phylloxera plague. Try it now, but it will age beautifully. Best after 2026." James Suckling

You need good shoes if you want to go to your vineyards with Marco de Grazia. Best mountain boots. Because that's where you actually go mountaineering. Yeah, you could call it climbing in some places.
Marco de Grazia is well known in the international fine wine scene. You could say worldwide. He was one of the first in Italy to bring together several up-and-coming wineries and was thus able to achieve remarkable export successes. He was co-inventor and engine of the Barolo Boys.
In his constant search for good and authentic wines, he arrived in Sicily in 2002 and tasted Rosso dell'Etna - red wine from Etna. And was fascinated. From the wine, from the bizarre landscape with the black soils and from the introverted people who harvested there in many working hours the lowest yields of gnarled ancient wine trees. That's why there weren't twenty wineries left. Today there are ten times as many and wine from Etna is a sought-after speciality.
Marco and his brother Iano de Grazia, who joined in, are not innocent of this at all. Their commitment and fairly rapid success sparked the interest of some major wine producers, who eventually all invested around Etna.
The highest sites of the Tenuta delle Terre Nere stretch almost up to one third to the northern flank of the mighty towering and always smoking volcano Etna. From about 600 m up to almost 1,000 m above sea level. The higher, the steeper it gets. And rockier. The highest sites - called Contrade here - are real rock terraces. These "rocks" are black. Weathered lava. Hence Tenuta delle Terre Nere. The manor with the black floors.
You could write a book when Marco pulls his floppy hat into his face and starts telling stories. Because he has a lot to tell. From his locations, which he also likes to call "cru" and with which he draws comparisons with Burgundy. If one compares the wines, one also understands this, because "Rosso dell'Etna" from individual sites (Cru or here Contrade) could be understood as a combination of Barbaresco and Burgundy.
The winery is located on the northern slopes of the volcano, between Solicchiata and Randazzo. In the middle of the combed green of the vine rows on black soil lies the striking red house with the cellar. And here it is again, the comparison with Burgundy - "if one would compare the wine-growing area around Etna with Burgundy, then these sites would be here the Côte d'Or des Etna" says Marco de Grazia.
Already in his first vintages (2002) Marco de Grazia decided to vinify the individual "Crus" separately, because the soils and microclimates are so different. Even within a single small plot, which may have one hectare, the differences can be considerable due to the former eruptions and lava flows, the soils being of different ages - and a height difference of 200 metres.
Due to the altitude, it is relatively cool and always windy, even in midsummer. Offshore wind - after all, Mount Etna is 3,350 m high. And during the day the winds blow from the nearby sea across the land. All sites have been farmed organically since the beginning, some of them have been in organic farming for generations.
Feudo di Mezzo is the largest site in the region, which is why its volcanic soil is interspersed with various ancient lava flows. 600-700 m above sea level with 40-80 year old vines. The heart is called "Il Quadro delle Rose", from here comes a very elegant and complex Etna Rosso DOC, from Nerello Mascalese.
Caldera Sottana is the steepest and hardest rocky vineyard. Grapes - 50 to 100 years old - only 5 tons per hectare. 14 ha red (98% Nerello Mascalese, 2% Nerello Cappuccio) and 3.5 ha white (Carricante). A floor made of volcanic ash, black pumice stone and solid volcanic rock.
One hectare of it, divided into two small plots next to the cellar, is called "La Vigna di Don Peppino". These vineyards have survived the phylloxera and are still root true vines, more than 130 years old. A man cared for her all her life, for more than 70 years; without him they would hardly have survived. Today they are magnificent little trees. Low yield, but elegant and structured. Thanks to Don Peppino.
Santo Spirito is the most scenic location with a great view. At 700-760m above sea level, 40-100 year old vines grow on "younger" volcanic soils rich in nutrients and minerals. Around the vineyards grows a lot of green, meadows and wild herbs, and so are the wines from this location. Quite intense and finely spicy.
San Lorenzo is the "newcomer", but with sticks up to one hundred years old. 4 hectares of magnificent Nerello grapes on volcanic and rocky soils. At about 750 m above sea level you can reach mini yields of about 5 t/ha. These small berry grapes produce complex, finely structured and elegant red wines that are among the best in the region.
Guardiola is the highest "Contrada". One of the first vineyards to be purchased by Marco di Grazia and his brother Iano. 800 to almost 1,000 m above sea level, windy, cool, barren. Volcano, basalt, hard and steep. Extreme handwork, many hours of work for just three and a half to four and a half tons of grapes. This effort is only worthwhile for lovers, because they appreciate this herbal spice, this wonderful, clear dark fruit, structure and complexity, as well as elegance and potential for many years. SUPERIORE.DE
"The wines of Marco di Grazia have helped to put Etna at the top of the geological map. Its consistency in winemaking is one of the most important guarantees for the future of this up-and-coming wine region". Robert Parker
