      Etna Rosso DOC 2018 (BIO)

Dark, bright ruby red. Pure and elegant, with spicy herbal aromas and fresh fruity notes of cherry and currant. Subtle with a beautiful fruity play, delicate salt vein, yet compact and full of harmony. A Rosso with the almost Burgundian finesse and length of a Pinot Nero. SUPERIORE.DE

    • Etna Bianco DOC 2018

      Etna Bianco DOC 2018

Etna Bianco by Terre Nere offers a surprising amount of depth and sophistication. The cuvée of Carricante, Catarratto, Grecanico, Inzolia and Minnella smells of grapefruit, quince, dried sage and wild mint. On the palate fine mineral notes, develops elegantly with notes of lemon quark. Excellent quality at a very attractive price. SUPERIORE.DE

"Luminous medium-dark straw yellow. Aromas and flavors of chamomile and balsamic oils along with hints of pear and minerals on the inviting nose. Enters a little subdued, but finishes very strong and long. This builds on you slowly; think of it more like a marathon runner rather than a 100 yards sprinter." Vinous

"A depth of dried apples, lemons and crushed sea salt follows through to a full body, layers of fruit and a flavorful finish. Shows length and depth." James Suckling

“Le Vigne Niche Calderara Sottana” Bianco Etna DOC 2016 (BIO)

Fantastic Etnakreszenz of up to 60 years old vines from small single vineyard with wonderfully balanced iodine and citrus aromas. Softly flowing on the palate, deep in the taste, the fine acidity and delicate wood note well integrated into the overall concept. SUPERIORE.DE

"Aromas of Spanish broom, Mediterranean brush, citrus zest and a subtle whiff of oak slowly take shape. On the palate, bright acidity frames ripe lemon, golden apple, coffee bean and minerality. This is a serious white made to be paired with savory first courses as opposed to a simple aperitif." Wine Enthusiast

"A broad, medium-bodied white that expands on the palate with flavors of pear and peach skin, hazelnut and lemon parfait, while well-cut acidity and a spicy mineral note focus this through to the lasting finish." Wine Spectator

This Carricante of up to 100 year old vines from small single vineyard does not let anything come to its variety and terroir origin. Fine fruity scent, mineral and with a fresh sea breeze. Powerful, well structured, fine wood note, balanced and long in taste. SUPERIORE.DE

"The finest Etna Bianco I have ever tasted; 100% Carricante, aged in oak with great depth of fruit; a powerful white that should drink well for another 5-7 years, but perhaps even longer." Tom Hyland, Forbes Magazine

"Brilliant straw yellow with green nuances. Cool nose, opened with notes of grapefruit and rosemary, some flint. Develops on the palate firm pressure, lots of yellow fruit, pronounced salty." Falstaff

"Compared to the Carricante from the Calderara Sottana cru, the 2017 Etna Bianco Santo Spirito (Cuvée delle Vigne Niche) is more mineral-driven in my opinion (by a small margin). Both wines were vinified and aged in the exact same way, so the very subtle differences you taste between the two are wholly territory-driven. The bouquet is crystalline and direct with briny sea aromas, summer peach and sun-dried lemon zest. Some 5,000 bottles were made." Robert Parker

"Aromas of hot stones, sliced apples and lemons follow through to a full body, oily texture and a rich and flavorful finish. From organically grown grapes." James Suckling

"Luminous golden-tinged straw yellow. Minerals and a hint of white flowers on the saline accented nose. Rich round and smooth, with very deep, complex flavors of honey and pomaceous orchard fruit. Finishes long and vibrant, this is absolutely a knockout." Vinous

"Sparkling straw yellow. Fine nose with fresh notes of juicy peach, apricot, in the background some grapefruit and flint. Great play on the palate, many salty-mineral components, after Mirabelle, long and persistent, very fine." Falstaff

"The 2017 Etna Bianco Calderara Sottana is identified as Cuvée delle Vigne Niche on my technical sheet, although I do not see that single-vineyard designation identified on the bottle label. This is a beautiful white wine with lasting aromas of citrus, passion fruit and crushed mineral. This compact white wine hits the palate with sharp and linear focus. That tightness you get at this young stage should evolve and flesh out over the next 5 years of bottle aging. This wine is fermented in stainless steel at low temperatures and it completes malolactic fermentation before going into large oak casks for ten months. Some 9,000 bottles were made." Robert Parker

"Aromas of yogurt, cream and dried pineapple follow through to a full-bodied, round and layered palate with lots of fruit and flavor. Hints of bitter lemons and cooked apples. Slightly oily. From organically grown grapes." James Suckling

"Vibrant deep yellow. Deep, round and complex, this enters sweet then turns mineral and steely, with refined lemony, apple and chamomile flavors. Finishes long, very austere and stony, but manages the neat trick of tasting luscious and ripe at the same time. Deeper and more complex than the other 2017 whites I tasted from Terre Nere this year. This 100% Carricante, mostly from 60 years old vines, may well be the best white wine from owner Marc de Grazia’s Terre Nere estate I have ever tried at a similar stage of development." Vinous

    • "Una Tantum" Bianco Etna DOC 2017

“Una Tantum” Bianco Etna DOC 2017

Una Tantum is a special cuvée that Marco de Grazia bottled with a strictly selected batch of his best Carricante grapes from the 2017 harvest. The name was chosen in order to emphasise the exceptional nature of the wine and at the same time to emphasise that it will probably remain a unique project wine.

Golden yellow colour, yellow flowers in the wide fragrance and some citrus. On the palate a soft acidity unfolds with a fine salt vein, accompanied by a spicy herbal note. In the final again salty with a mineral component, very long and impressively different. SUPERIORE.DE

"A rather deep, slightly herbaceous-planty, delicately smoky and clearly mineral scent with restrained yellow-fruity aromas, floral hints and a hint of bacon. Rather firmly worked, restrained, tart, fine juicy, noble fruit, yeasty, somewhat herbaceous planty, smoky and clearly mineral notes, very fine acidity, a hint of nut and butter in the background, still young, good depth, fine handle, best balance, very good, firm finish, again with restrained, noble yellow fruit, intensive minerality and smoky notes." Marcus Hofschuster

"Pale lemon. More evident almond nut and cinnamon oak tones, with some white-peach richness alongside lemon fruit. Chalky minerality. Ripe lemon, chalk, smoky minerality and some apple skin, with phenolic texture and a touch of salinity." Jancis Robinson

    • "Santo Spirito" Rosso Etna DOC 2017

“Santo Spirito” Rosso Etna DOC 2017

Santo Spirito is a wonderfully complex wine. It combines firmness, strength, structure and density with the aromas of dark cherries, pomegranate, blood oranges and spicy herbal notes and concludes with a furiously long final. SUPERIORE.DE

"Pale-medium ruby. Crushed rock, vanilla scent and something almost minty. Cranberry and red-cherry fruit. Sweet-sour palate fruit with a bitterness reminiscent of Campari. Compact, fairly firm, chalky tannins that need time to unwind. Long, dried herb and spice finish." Jancis Robinson

"A fragrant, medium- to full-bodied red that shows impeccable balance and integration, layering fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity with flavors of ripe strawberry, cured tobacco and star anise, balanced by a bright hint of pomegranate. The sculpted tannins show more presence on the long, minerally finish." Wine Spectator

"Sour cherries, ripe strawberries, heather, rosemary, cedar, sweet tobacco and red licorice all spring from the glass. The full-bodied palate remains racy throughout, painting a precisely framed, confident portrait of subtle berries with loads of acidity crunch." James Suckling

    Tenuta delle Terre Nere

You need good shoes if you want to go to your vineyards with Marco de Grazia. Best mountain boots. Because that's where you actually go mountaineering. Yeah, you could call it climbing in some places.

Marco de Grazia is well known in the international fine wine scene. You could say worldwide. He was one of the first in Italy to bring together several up-and-coming wineries and was thus able to achieve remarkable export successes. He was co-inventor and engine of the Barolo Boys.

In his constant search for good and authentic wines, he arrived in Sicily in 2002 and tasted Rosso dell'Etna - red wine from Etna. And was fascinated. From the wine, from the bizarre landscape with the black soils and from the introverted people who harvested there in many working hours the lowest yields of gnarled ancient wine trees. That's why there weren't twenty wineries left. Today there are ten times as many and wine from Etna is a sought-after speciality.

Marco and his brother Iano de Grazia, who joined in, are not innocent of this at all. Their commitment and fairly rapid success sparked the interest of some major wine producers, who eventually all invested around Etna.

The highest sites of the Tenuta delle Terre Nere stretch almost up to one third to the northern flank of the mighty towering and always smoking volcano Etna. From about 600 m up to almost 1,000 m above sea level. The higher, the steeper it gets. And rockier. The highest sites - called Contrade here - are real rock terraces. These "rocks" are black. Weathered lava. Hence Tenuta delle Terre Nere. The manor with the black floors.

You could write a book when Marco pulls his floppy hat into his face and starts telling stories. Because he has a lot to tell. From his locations, which he also likes to call "cru" and with which he draws comparisons with Burgundy. If one compares the wines, one also understands this, because "Rosso dell'Etna" from individual sites (Cru or here Contrade) could be understood as a combination of Barbaresco and Burgundy.

The winery is located on the northern slopes of the volcano, between Solicchiata and Randazzo. In the middle of the combed green of the vine rows on black soil lies the striking red house with the cellar. And here it is again, the comparison with Burgundy - "if one would compare the wine-growing area around Etna with Burgundy, then these sites would be here the Côte d'Or des Etna" says Marco de Grazia.

Already in his first vintages (2002) Marco de Grazia decided to vinify the individual "Crus" separately, because the soils and microclimates are so different. Even within a single small plot, which may have one hectare, the differences can be considerable due to the former eruptions and lava flows, the soils being of different ages - and a height difference of 200 metres.
Due to the altitude, it is relatively cool and always windy, even in midsummer. Offshore wind - after all, Mount Etna is 3,350 m high. And during the day the winds blow from the nearby sea across the land. All sites have been farmed organically since the beginning, some of them have been in organic farming for generations.

Feudo di Mezzo is the largest site in the region, which is why its volcanic soil is interspersed with various ancient lava flows. 600-700 m above sea level with 40-80 year old vines. The heart is called "Il Quadro delle Rose", from here comes a very elegant and complex Etna Rosso DOC, from Nerello Mascalese.

Caldera Sottana is the steepest and hardest rocky vineyard. Grapes - 50 to 100 years old - only 5 tons per hectare. 14 ha red (98% Nerello Mascalese, 2% Nerello Cappuccio) and 3.5 ha white (Carricante). A floor made of volcanic ash, black pumice stone and solid volcanic rock.

One hectare of it, divided into two small plots next to the cellar, is called "La Vigna di Don Peppino". These vineyards have survived the phylloxera and are still root true vines, more than 130 years old. A man cared for her all her life, for more than 70 years; without him they would hardly have survived. Today they are magnificent little trees. Low yield, but elegant and structured. Thanks to Don Peppino.

Santo Spirito is the most scenic location with a great view. At 700-760m above sea level, 40-100 year old vines grow on "younger" volcanic soils rich in nutrients and minerals. Around the vineyards grows a lot of green, meadows and wild herbs, and so are the wines from this location. Quite intense and finely spicy.

San Lorenzo is the "newcomer", but with sticks up to one hundred years old. 4 hectares of magnificent Nerello grapes on volcanic and rocky soils. At about 750 m above sea level you can reach mini yields of about 5 t/ha. These small berry grapes produce complex, finely structured and elegant red wines that are among the best in the region.

Guardiola is the highest "Contrada". One of the first vineyards to be purchased by Marco di Grazia and his brother Iano. 800 to almost 1,000 m above sea level, windy, cool, barren. Volcano, basalt, hard and steep. Extreme handwork, many hours of work for just three and a half to four and a half tons of grapes. This effort is only worthwhile for lovers, because they appreciate this herbal spice, this wonderful, clear dark fruit, structure and complexity, as well as elegance and potential for many years. "The wines of Marco di Grazia have helped to put Etna at the top of the geological map. Its consistency in winemaking is one of the most important guarantees for the future of this up-and-coming wine region". Robert Parker
