      Sangiovese di Toscana IGT 2016

Wonderfully juicy and open Sangiovese from the Brunello winery Sesta di Sopra. Black cherries and plums merge with sweet spices and liquorice in an enjoyable wine that shows a lighter, but by no means banal side of the appellation. SUPERIORE.DE

"A fresh and very clean red with cherry and hints of chocolate character. Medium body, fresh acidity and a crisp finish. Bright and linear. Tiny production and from a top cult Brunello producer. Drink and enjoy." James Suckling

Intense, smoky blackberry nose, cherry, chocolate and plum on the palate; a beautiful fruit melt and handy tannin spread continuously and long to a serious introduction to the great wine world of Montalcino. SUPERIORE.DE

"The folks at Sesta di Sopra are releasing this wine later than usual. The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino is a terrific expression that acts and tastes like a full-fledged Brunello. The wine opens slowly in the glass, revealing budding complexity as it does. It shows bright berry intensity with grilled herb, pressed violet and potting soil. The mid-weight finish is elegant and tight." Robert Parker

Wow, this is more than the little brother of Brunello di Montalcino: Intense, smoky blackberry nose, cherry, chocolate and plum on the palate; a beautiful fruit melt and handy tannin spread continuously and long to a serious entry into the great wine world of Montalcino. SUPERIORE.DE

"Good full red color. Captivating aromas and flavors of ripe red cherry, savory herbs, and redcurrant jelly are laced with bright licorice and blood orange nuances. An exceptional Rosso, nicely combining richness with vivacity in a remarkably harmonious way. Closes creamy yet refined. One of the top three-four Rossos of the vintage and better than many Brunellos." Vinous

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012

There are no 8,000 bottles of this great Brunello 2012, a powerful yet elegant wine. Ettore and Enrica Bandirola learned how to make wine from scratch at no less than Giancarlo (Siro) Pacenti. Insider tip! SUPERIORE.DE

"Nose with notes of stone fruit and dark chocolate; in the mouth compact, with a lot of melting and beautiful course to aromas of juicy stone fruit. Harmonious." Vinum

"The Sesta di Sopra 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is a rich and savory wine. It opens to a beautifully saturated ruby color and a dark appearance. The bouquet is redolent of cherry, wild raspberry, spice, toasted almond and spicy tobacco or cured leather. The quality and the intensity of the bouquet is excellent. But like many of the best Brunellos of the vintage, the mouthfeel is not as long or deep as you might expect, given the generous abundance of the aromas released." Robert Parker

"Beautiful aromas of raspberries, strawberries and flowers. Very intense and focused. Full-bodied, silky and flashy with lots of fruit and firm and tight tannins. Needs time to open but already fantastic." James Suckling

"Bright dark red. The terroir-driven nose offers raspberry, cherry, and iron aromas, complicated by oak-derived coffee and sweet spice tones. Utterly seamless in texture, featuring very precise and highly energetic smoky red cherry and raspberry jelly flavors. The slowly mounting, suave finish shows outstanding length and a refined touch to the tannins." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

"Mature black-skinned fruit, menthol and dark spice aromas carry over to the savory, full-bodied palate, joining juicy black cherry, raspberry compote and dried herb flavors. Firm, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity offer support and a seamless feel." Wine Enthusiast

"The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino shows impressive balance with a dark appearance that is not heavy and a compact texture that remains light and elegant all at once. Bold cherry fruit segues to licorice, tar and tangy cedar wood. The wine is silky and fresh with moderate to long persistence." Robert Parker

"Dark and mysterious, this red offers plum, black cherry, leather, leafy tobacco and tar flavors. Fresh and lifted up by a layer of beefy tannins, lingering with a spicy, underbrush aftertaste." Wine Spectator

"A red with plenty of ripe and floral fruit on the nose as well as orange peel and cherry. Full body, linear and very fine with beautiful fruit. White pepper, too. Shows energy." James Suckling

"Elegantly scented, this fragrant red opens with scents of perfumed berry, iris, pipe tobacco and exotic spice. The vibrant linear palate evokes juicy cranberry, sour cherry and star anise framed in tightly wound fine-grained tannins while bright acidity provides balance. A savory saline note lingers on the finish." Wine Enthusiast

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

Our insider tip for years - only 9,000 bottles are coming onto the world market this year from the 2015 vintage! What hardly anyone knows: Enrica and Ettore learned how to make wine from none other than Giancarlo Pacenti.

The grapes for this vinophile masterpiece come from a small vineyard in Castelnuovo dell'Abate. Deep, full-bodied expression with warm aromatic layers that give an impressive intensity to the bouquet of dark plum, blackberry, dried cherry, liquorice, tar, black truffle and leather. Then on the palate a beguiling extract sweetness, again very complex and resonant, in silent harmony with the characteristics of the exceptional terroir. The 36 months very slow aging in large oak barrels sort for a wonderful harmony and a very good aging potential. SUPERIORE.DE

"Ample and round, sporting cherry, plum, earth and saline flavors. Well-mannered tannins are integrated, lending an overall impression of freshness. Fine length. Best from 2023 through 2040." Wine Spectator

"Deep red-ruby. Almost hypnotic aromas of ripe red cherry, black cherry-cola, incense, violet, dried rose and minerals. Structured and sweet red and darker fruit flavors are graceful and finely etched, picking up savory spice and floral elements with aeration. Perhaps a touch less multifaceted than some other Brunellos from this estate, but brimming with early appeal and enough balance to easily last another fifteen to twenty years in a good cellar." Vinous

"Beautiful ripeness, but also balance on the nose, which features cinnamon, dried cedar, dried plums, dark chocolate and licorice. Expansive and comprehensive on the palate with outward-veering tannins and lots of treacle-tart undertones. Chewy and decadent. Drink from 2025." James Suckling

    Sesta di Sopra
    Tuscany | Montalcino
    Sesta di Sopra

An Ethhruscan symbol of the sun found on the farm is a trademark along with the name of the country estate dating back to the 13th century. The 44 hectare estate Sesta di Sopra, southwest of Montalcino and about four kilometers from Castelnuovo dell'Situated in Abate, it was acquired by the Spina family in 1980. First the main house, probably originally an old lookout tower, was renovated, before a two-hectare area covered with olive trees was built. After that, vines were planted on a further two hectares of land. In less than ten years, Sesta di Sopra has become a leading Brunello producer. The first vintage of aristocratic wine was pressed in 1999.

Sesta di Sopra is located in an area that is extremely suitable for viticulture. Situated near the river Orcia, the calcareous soil and the microclimate are particularly favourable for the vines to thrive. Ettore Spina attaches great importance to planting and operating the vineyards according to the latest knowledge of viticulture. The vineyards planted in the early 1990s with a mixture of different clones of the Sangiovese grosso variety are not productive, but produce very high-quality grapes.

After they have been harvested, the grapes are placed in crates to protect them from damage. Arrived at the tiny winery, the grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled steel tanks according to traditional methods. The Brunello is aged in traditional Slavonian oak barrels with a capacity of 30 hectolitres. The Rosso is matured in French oak barrels.

In the preparation of Brunello and Rosso as well as in the ageing of both plants, Ettore Spina can always rely on the professional advice and commitment of his good friend Giancarlo Pacenti, until recently Vice President of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. SUPERIORE.DE

“The wines of this small family farm, whose vineyards are located in the upper part of the Sesta zone, are unmistakably committed to their terroir.”Gambero Rosso
