• Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2018

Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2018

The grapes for Poggio Anticos Rosso have always come from 100% Brunello sites and the wine is a real insider tip for Montalcino lovers. After some aeration, the nose is enchanted by an overwhelming bouquet of spices, ripe red cherries and fine leather notes. Full, firm and fleshy on the palate, the structure very polished and balanced. A Rosso that, with a little patience and further aging in the bottle, could well be a Brunello: precise, delicious and with a beautiful, long final full of depth and youthful maturity. SUPERIORE.DE

• "Lemartine" Rosso Toscana IGT 2017

“Lemartine” Rosso Toscana IGT 2017

Lemartine, a striking blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, shines in a stunningly beautiful red. Dark fruity aromas, pomegranate and cinnamon emanate from its dense, expressive bouquet and continue on the palate. Refined opulence and a Supertoscan in pure culture! SUPERIORE.DE

"A blend of 50% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Petit Verdot, the Poggio Antico 2017 Lemartine achieves one important goal. It delivers loads of Tuscan charm packaged neatly into one very approachable and forthcoming wine. You get generous purple and black fruit flavors. The hot growing season has no doubt contributed to the immediately soft and fruity character of the blend. Perhaps this hot vintage expression lacks more meaningful depth or width, however the wine drinks beautifully straight out of the gate and would pair with a classic Tuscan dish of pappardelle with wild boar ragù."

• "Madre" Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

“Madre” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

Madre is an elegant and yet juicy cuvée of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon matured in barrique. Its rich, slightly tobacco and leather coloured bouquet and the impressive, persistent taste give it great originality and character. SUPERIORE.DE

"Plenty of tar, earth, dried red plums, redcurrants, dried cedar, tobacco, vanilla and dark chocolate. Full body, ripe and round tannins and a chewy, drying finish." James Suckling

"This is a blend of equal parts Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2016 Madre most definitely benefits from extra oxygen (I tasted the wine at different intervals after I had first opened the bottle). It's still a bit tight and nervous at this young stage of its life, and this of course bodes well for the aging future of the wine. In fact, I recommend you wait a year or two before pulling the cork. This is a cool and elegant vintage that delivers sharp lines of blue and blackberry fruit with subtle tones of spice and underbrush. The acidity is noticeable, and the wine offers tart fruit nuances on the close. Give it time to unwind in the glass." Robert Parker

• Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012

Bright, rich ruby. Seductive nose with pronounced notes of ripe red and dark fruits, plenty of cherry and plum, plus fine spicy notes. Clear and straight on the palate, opens with a lot of firm tannin, is very polished and has a wide arch. Juicy and long in the finale. SUPERIORE.DE

"A layered and rich Brunello with chocolate, berry and cherry character. Full-bodied, very velvety and flavorful. Pretty and generous." James Suckling

"Mid ruby with orange tinges. Quite reluctant nose and a surprisingly open-knit palate of dark fruit and supple acidity. Fantastic, crunchy tannins on the finish. Can be approached now, but should be allowed to age." Jancis Robinson

"A fluid style, with pure cherry, raspberry and floral notes emanating from the vibrant structure. Leather, tobacco, spice and mineral details add depth as this unfolds into a long, expansive finish. The tannins are solid and integrated." Wine Spectator

"Paola Gloder's 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is a delightful wine with easy-drinking appeal and lots of energy and personality locked within. This Brunello delivers smooth consistency and dark concentration with a saturated garnet hue. The aromas lift off the bouquet with power and determination. They include black berry, spice, cola, tobacco and mild espresso. The wine shows well integrated fruit tannins with good richness and supple power. Like other wines from this vintage, the mouthfeel is slightly leaner and more compact, but this is nicely compensated by its overall balance and focus." Robert Parker

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013

Medium ruby red with orange reflections. In the nose beautiful cherry, raspberry and flower notes, in addition some espresso and spice notes. On the palate a smooth consistency, exciting depth and multi-layered fruity notes. It presents itself long and medium heavy, its elegance and the focused overall picture make it one of the best of the vintage. SUPERIORE.DE

"Round and transparent, lively and fresh. Very well balanced and confident. So clean and long!" Jancis Robinson

"The nose is a beauty, with pure, intense cherry aromas. The palate is rich but sleek, and marked by its brightness and freshness. The tannins are fine-grained, and the acidity gives intensity. The finish is fresh, balanced, and long." Decanter

"Bright red. Fresh and floral, offering straightforward red berry, herb and violet aromas and flavors with early appeal. Impeccably balanced and smooth on the long, violet-accented finish. A very elegant Brunello with sneaky concentration and depth." Vinous

"Elegant, even delicate, this red evokes leafy, floral, strawberry and cherry notes, all backed by a firm, bright structure. Linear yet long, with fine tension and juiciness." Wine Spectator

"Crushed aromatic herb, forest floor, woodland berry and blue flower mingle with a whiff of new leather. The elegant medium-bodied palate offers tart red cherry, juicy raspberry and star anise framed in tightly knit refined tannins. Bright acidity lends balance." Wine Enthusiast

"Here is a silky and smooth interpretation of Sangiovese from a cool and classic vintage. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino offers a balanced bouquet with equal parts dark fruit, spice and grilled herb. This wine delivers a soft and delicate approach with firm tannins that are well integrated within the greater flesh and texture of the wine." Robert Parker

• Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

2015 was a very balanced and perfect year for many winemakers from Montalcino. This is also how the current edition of the noble Poggio Antico presents itself: fine, silky tannins frame a core of crushed berries, flowers, liquorice and new leather. The inner extract sweetness of the wine reveals itself only with the time of aeration, giving it harmony and class. Already today, a super-elegant and at the same time refined and open Brunello presents itself, which, for all its fruitiness, always remains graceful and fresh at the same time. Our perspective: As the wine matures in the bottle, the drinking pleasure of this first-class Sangiovese increases even more! SUPERIORE.DE

"Shiny, rich ruby with a garnet sheen. A lot of ripe and present fruit after dark plums and cherries, some cloves, classic. A lot of ripe and sweet fruit on the palate, opens with fine, dense tannin, nice melting, juicy in the aftertaste." Falstaff

"Cherry, plum, earth, wild scrub and salty flavors are the hallmarks of this dense, hefty red. An iron note becomes more prominent as this evolves on the palate. Well-balanced, with the ripe fruit and saline elements lingering on the finish." Wine Spectator

"Bright red with a pale rim. Captivating aromas of ripe red fruits, blueberry nectar, marzipan and Oriental spices. Boasts outstanding inner-mouth perfume and precise flavors of ripe red cherry, redcurrant jelly, potpourri and minerals. Finishes long and seamless. This is one of the best non-single vineyard Brunellos of the vintage and one of the better wines from Poggio Antico in some time." Vinous

"Poggio Antico brings us a classic expression of Sangiovese in its 2015 Brunello di Montalcino. The warm vintage has shaped more density and volume in the fruit, but fundamentally this wine holds tight to the bright and fresh taste profile that is characteristic of Brunello. The key is the acidity that remains an integral and important element in the fundamental architecture of this wine. That natural crispness serves to underline lively fruit flavors of wild cherry and pressed violets. Background tones of earth and black licorice also appear. The team at Poggio Antico, located at one of the highest altitudes in the appellation (from 500 to 550 meters above sea level), has worked well to preserve the cool climate characteristics in this very warm and sunny vintage." Robert Parker

"This understated Brunello delivers dried cherries, cumin, terracotta, rust and bark. The full-bodied palate presents an intricately detailed tapestry of finely interwoven tannins, interspersed with compressed, vibrant cherries and gilded in colorful, gleaming acidity. The finish is vivacious and polished and very long." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino “Altero” DOCG 2012

A radiant bouquet of blackberries with a hint of leather in the background. Although it has a modern design, this wine from Montalcino is strongly attached to its homeland and gives the acidity typical of Montalcino's high altitudes the main role in its beguilingly generous taste. Attractive, smooth and wonderfully long-lasting! SUPERIORE.DE

"Nuances of red berries, violets and tobacco; compact structure with well integrated tannins, juice and perfectly integrated acidity, rich in finesse and with storage potential. It goes very well with game dishes." Vinum

"A pretty and ripe Brunello with lots of plum and cherry aromas. Full body, soft and chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Some dustiness within the texture. Dense and enticing." James Suckling

"Youthful ruby. Deep nose of fruit with hints of oak. Ripe, rich cherry fruit with a zesty, tangy core. Real interest and great tactile finish. Still firmly tannic for the moment." Jancis Robinson

"Here's a richly concentrated expression from one of the highest sites in Montalcino. The wine shows excellent balance and suppleness. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Altero flaunts the best characteristics of the hot vintage including beautifully saturated color intensity, seamless aromas and good texture richness. On that last point, I feel that the mouthfeel has been positively impacted by oak tannins. Dark cherry and dried blackberry are followed by spice, tar, licorice and grilled rosemary or Mediterranean herb. The wine is youthful and tight but should obtain a more polished approach with a few more years of bottle aging." Robert Parker

Brunello di Montalcino “Altero” DOCG 2013

Brilliant ruby red. The bouquet is beguiling with smoky notes, then some plum, blackberries, cloves. In drink Altero 2013 is very juicy with multi-layered fruit like blackberry and cherry. The fine tannin structure masterfully envelops the precise aromas. In the finish it is complex and not without some pressure - for us it is in balance and personality the archetype of the Poggio Antico style. SUPERIORE.DE

"Concentrated ruby with a slight garnet shimmer. Opened with notes of leather and dried porcini mushrooms, blackberries and cherry jam. Round and smooth on the palate, shows a lot of ripe fruit, raspberries, blackberries, the whole palette, opens with polished, fine tannin, shows many layers, rich finish." Falstaff

"Situated in the south of the zone, at 450 metres above sea level, the vineyards look southwest towards the Maremma coast, which sends warm afternoon breezes. Altero represents the estate's more modern Brunello, aged in 500 litre French tonneaux.. Inviting flavours of mint, blossom, plum and leather are joined by subtle toast. The oak is quite integrated, and the tannins are refined and smooth, while a sappy finish adds character." Decanter

"Ripe and rich aromas of dried fruits and figs with an orange undertone. Full body, chewy tannins and a rich finish. More fruit-forward style for this vintage." James Suckling

"This red is bright, with cherry, currant and Mediterranean scrub flavors accented by tar and tobacco. A beam of sweet ripe fruit is the focus, with the dense texture nicely integrated. The long finish is fresh and detailed, picking up graphite notes and a hint of blood orange." Wine Spectator

"The single-vineyard 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Altero boasts dark and saturated fruit with luscious cherry and blackberry aromas that have remained bright and balanced throughout the aging process. Those purple fruit tones are backed by light shadings of spice, leather, cola and balsam herb. This wine shows amazing depth and personality, and we can count on it to evolve gracefully over the next 10 years or more." Robert Parker

Brunello di Montalcino “Altero” DOCG 2015

Altero - the flagship of the winery - is a beautiful, smooth wine with dark red cherries, cherry brandy, menthol, pine wood and spices. The silky finish is enveloped by sweet, floral notes. The top vintage 2015 is characterized by its fine texture and an impeccable overall balance, while maintaining a high density. For us, it is one of the most rounded, precise and richest Brunello of this vintage, with an ageing potential that will satisfy every expectation. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, rich ruby grenade. Intense and clear nose, of violets and dark cherries, in the background cranberries. Lots of crisp cherry on the palate, polished, well-integrated tannin, smooth and long." Falstaff

"One of the first things I notice in the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Altero is the increased richness or concentration (especially compared to the estate's classic Brunello from the same vintage). That wine is slightly more streamlined and contoured compared to the Altero that wears a heavier mantle made with thicker fiber and texture. This impression is especially evident on the bouquet where you pick up a hint of extra softness or ripeness that comes thanks to this warm vintage. The bouquet offers sensations of dried cherry skin or plum with sweet spice and moist potting soil." Robert Parker

"A beautiful cascade of blue and darker fruit precedes generous, enticing notes of saffron, dried orange rind, cumin, roasted thyme and nutmeg. Balanced and tightly framed on the medium-to full-bodied palate with mouthwatering fruit and crunchy acidity, coloring an ornately woven structure of silky tannins. Very long and velvety on the finish. Everything is where it should be." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2012

Top riservas from a great vintage. Dark ruby, sweet fruity plum aroma in the nose, followed by vanilla, fig and chocolate, the taste very dense, concentrated and fruity. A wine of good structure and balance with a remarkable finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant, intense ruby with a garnet shimmer. Fine, intense nose, with rose petals, dark cherries and cranberries, slightly resinous notes in the background. It shows itself very polished in the beginning and course, rich, ripe fruit, fine enamel, shows itself tight in the final." Falstaff

"Soft, velvety fruit opens the nose of the ripe and very luscious 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. This hot-vintage Sangiovese exudes dark fruit, prune and black plum. There are sweet notes of spice, leather and tobacco at the back. This Brunello plays its best cards in the mouth. It offers crisp contours and lots of textural richness and fruity fiber throughout." Robert Parker

"This is plush, boasting cherry, plum, leather, mineral and tobacco flavors. Vibrant and solidly built, with a long, expansive and spicy aftertaste. Needs some time, but this should come together nicely in three to five years." Wine Spectator

"Enormous concentration, bright acidity and a stunning tannic structure make this wine stand head and shoulders above the crowd in the excellent 2012 vintage. Very dark fruits, but no hint of overripeness. Fine cocoa powder, licorice and black tea too. The complex and refined finish echoes down the valleys!" James Suckling

• Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015
MAGNUM in OWC

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015 · MAGNUM in OWC

• Brunello di Montalcino "Altero" DOCG 2015
MAGNUM in OWC

Brunello di Montalcino “Altero” DOCG 2015 · MAGNUM in OWC

About the winemakers
Poggio Antico
Tuscany | Montalcino
Poggio Antico

Situated on a rocky promontory, the Poggio Antico winery in the heart of Montalcino offers a splendid south-westerly view. The earliest written records of the estate date back to the early 19th century, but until the 1970s there was no serious thought of viticulture. However, after the Milanese Giancarlo and Nuccia Gloder had acquired the 200 hectare estate in 1984, it progressed rapidly. Until 2017, Poggio Antico was managed with a sure hand by its youngest daughter Paola and her husband Alberto Montefiori. Today, the winery belongs to a Belgian investor who will continue to accompany it on its way to the top. With Paola Gloder and the oenologist Claudio Ferretti he is given maximum support.

Paola, who in the last 20 years has made a name for herself as one of the few women in the Brunello scene, has thoroughly cleaned up the vineyards and carried out radical renovations in the cellar. With these measures it has led the winery into the elite of Montalcino. The 32.5 hectares of vineyards, all located at higher altitudes at an average altitude of 450 metres above sea level, are densely planted and, thanks to their exemplary cultivation, always produce healthy and mature grapes that are selected with particular care in some vintages. Around the turn of the millennium, the vineyard had been extended by more than 17 hectares, all of which were approved for Brunello production.

The cellar contains the most modern preparation equipment. These include conical, temperature-controlled fermentation tanks, which form a perfect alliance with barrels of different sizes for the maturation of the Brunellos. The style of the wines pressed in Poggio Antico impresses with an outstanding basic quality. Depending on the typology, the plants differ depending on the barrel insert and the fermentation methods used. While the IGT wines Madre and Brunello di Montalcino Altero appear modern, the vintage wines of Brunello di Montalcino and Riserva can be classified more in the classical style. In the rankings of the European and American wine critics, the wines from Montalcino always occupy a safe top position. SUPERIORE.DE

"All the wines presented, in their elegant, sober manner, which does without any showmanship, are an image of this region."Gambero Rosso
