The grapes for Poggio Anticos Rosso have always come from 100% Brunello vineyards and the wine is a real insider tip for Montalcino lovers. Several of the vineyards have been certified organic since 2022. After some aeration, it beguiles the nose with an overwhelming bouquet of spices, ripe red cherries and fine leather notes. Full, firm and fleshy on the palate, the structure is very polished and balanced. While the other wines in the portfolio mature in smaller tonneaux, this wine is aged in large Slavonian barrels. We like the energetic lift and the simultaneous brightness of the fruit - the winery achieves this like no other. As the wine progresses, the approach is very delicate with a convincing intensity of floral aromas and a silky mouthfeel. Situated on a rocky promontory, the Poggio Antico winery in the heart of Montalcino offers a splendid south-westerly view. The earliest written records of the estate date back to the early 19th century, but until the 1970s there was no serious thought of viticulture. However, after the Milanese Giancarlo and Nuccia Gloder had acquired the 200 hectare estate in 1984, it progressed rapidly. Until 2017, Poggio Antico was managed with a sure hand by its youngest daughter Paola and her husband Alberto Montefiori. Today, the winery belongs to a Belgian investor who will continue to accompany it on its way to the top. With Paola Gloder and the oenologist Claudio Ferretti he is given maximum support.
Paola, who in the last 20 years has made a name for herself as one of the few women in the Brunello scene, has thoroughly cleaned up the vineyards and carried out radical renovations in the cellar. With these measures it has led the winery into the elite of Montalcino. The 32.5 hectares of vineyards, all located at higher altitudes at an average altitude of 450 metres above sea level, are densely planted and, thanks to their exemplary cultivation, always produce healthy and mature grapes that are selected with particular care in some vintages. Around the turn of the millennium, the vineyard had been extended by more than 17 hectares, all of which were approved for Brunello production.
The cellar contains the most modern preparation equipment. These include conical, temperature-controlled fermentation tanks, which form a perfect alliance with barrels of different sizes for the maturation of the Brunellos. The style of the wines pressed in Poggio Antico impresses with an outstanding basic quality. Depending on the typology, the plants differ depending on the barrel insert and the fermentation methods used. While the IGT wines Madre and Brunello di Montalcino Altero appear modern, the vintage wines of Brunello di Montalcino and Riserva can be classified more in the classical style. In the rankings of the European and American wine critics, the wines from Montalcino always occupy a safe top position. SUPERIORE.DE
