• Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2019

      Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2019

The grapes for Poggio Anticos Rosso have always come from 100% Brunello sites and the wine is a real insider tip for Montalcino lovers. After some aeration, it beguiles the nose with overwhelming bouquet of spices, ripe red cherries and subtle leather notes. The palate is full, firm and fleshy, the structure very polished and balanced. A Rosso, which could well be a Brunello with some patience and further bottle maturity: precise, delicious and with a beautiful, long final full of depth and charming reverberation. SUPERIORE.DE

    • "Madre" Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

      “Madre” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

Madre is an elegant and yet juicy cuvée of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon matured in barrique. Its rich, slightly tobacco and leather coloured bouquet and the impressive, persistent taste give it great originality and character. SUPERIORE.DE

"Plenty of tar, earth, dried red plums, redcurrants, dried cedar, tobacco, vanilla and dark chocolate. Full body, ripe and round tannins and a chewy, drying finish." James Suckling

"This is a blend of equal parts Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2016 Madre most definitely benefits from extra oxygen (I tasted the wine at different intervals after I had first opened the bottle). It's still a bit tight and nervous at this young stage of its life, and this of course bodes well for the aging future of the wine. In fact, I recommend you wait a year or two before pulling the cork. This is a cool and elegant vintage that delivers sharp lines of blue and blackberry fruit with subtle tones of spice and underbrush. The acidity is noticeable, and the wine offers tart fruit nuances on the close. Give it time to unwind in the glass." Robert Parker

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012

Bright, rich ruby. Seductive nose with pronounced notes of ripe red and dark fruits, plenty of cherry and plum, plus fine spicy notes. Clear and straight on the palate, opens with a lot of firm tannin, is very polished and has a wide arch. Juicy and long in the finale. SUPERIORE.DE

"A layered and rich Brunello with chocolate, berry and cherry character. Full-bodied, very velvety and flavorful. Pretty and generous." James Suckling

"Mid ruby with orange tinges. Quite reluctant nose and a surprisingly open-knit palate of dark fruit and supple acidity. Fantastic, crunchy tannins on the finish. Can be approached now, but should be allowed to age." Jancis Robinson

"A fluid style, with pure cherry, raspberry and floral notes emanating from the vibrant structure. Leather, tobacco, spice and mineral details add depth as this unfolds into a long, expansive finish. The tannins are solid and integrated." Wine Spectator

"Paola Gloder's 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is a delightful wine with easy-drinking appeal and lots of energy and personality locked within. This Brunello delivers smooth consistency and dark concentration with a saturated garnet hue. The aromas lift off the bouquet with power and determination. They include black berry, spice, cola, tobacco and mild espresso. The wine shows well integrated fruit tannins with good richness and supple power. Like other wines from this vintage, the mouthfeel is slightly leaner and more compact, but this is nicely compensated by its overall balance and focus." Robert Parker

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013

Medium ruby red with orange reflections. In the nose beautiful cherry, raspberry and flower notes, in addition some espresso and spice notes. On the palate a smooth consistency, exciting depth and multi-layered fruity notes. It presents itself long and medium heavy, its elegance and the focused overall picture make it one of the best of the vintage. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, intense ruby garnet. Open and inviting nose, intense notes of plums and raspberries, followed by fine cloves. Round and supple in its base and course, opens with fine-meshed tannin in many layers, long aftertaste, crisp." Falstaff

"Round and transparent, lively and fresh. Very well balanced and confident. So clean and long!" Jancis Robinson

"The nose is a beauty, with pure, intense cherry aromas. The palate is rich but sleek, and marked by its brightness and freshness. The tannins are fine-grained, and the acidity gives intensity. The finish is fresh, balanced, and long." Decanter

"Bright red. Fresh and floral, offering straightforward red berry, herb and violet aromas and flavors with early appeal. Impeccably balanced and smooth on the long, violet-accented finish. A very elegant Brunello with sneaky concentration and depth." Vinous

"Elegant, even delicate, this red evokes leafy, floral, strawberry and cherry notes, all backed by a firm, bright structure. Linear yet long, with fine tension and juiciness." Wine Spectator

"Crushed aromatic herb, forest floor, woodland berry and blue flower mingle with a whiff of new leather. The elegant medium-bodied palate offers tart red cherry, juicy raspberry and star anise framed in tightly knit refined tannins. Bright acidity lends balance." Wine Enthusiast

"Here is a silky and smooth interpretation of Sangiovese from a cool and classic vintage. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino offers a balanced bouquet with equal parts dark fruit, spice and grilled herb. This wine delivers a soft and delicate approach with firm tannins that are well integrated within the greater flesh and texture of the wine." Robert Parker

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016

Fine, silky tannins frame a core of crushed berries, flowers, licorice and new leather. The wine's inner extract sweetness reveals itself only with time of aeration, adding harmony and class. Already, a super-elegant yet refined and open Brunello presents itself, always remaining graceful and fresh at the same time for all its fruit richness. Our perspective: With increasing bottle maturity the drinking pleasure of this first-class Sangiovese increases again! SUPERIORE.DE

"This is so aromatic and floral with cedar, dried roses, and black cherries. It’s full-bodied, yet so refined and tight with silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Tight and focused. Needs time to open, but shows beautiful finesse and focus." James Suckling

"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino offers a pure and classic expression of the vintage with bright fruit tones, wild cherry, toasted nut, blue flower and forest floor. Whereas the other wines in the Poggio Antico portfolio undergo aging in smaller tonneaux, this wine is aged in large Slavonian casks instead. You taste the lift and brightness of the fruit, and it's all quite lovely. Grapes are sourced across a 13-hectare site at a very high 500 meters in elevation. The name of this area is I Poggi, and the soils here are a bit lighter and rockier with both schistous galestro and limestone alberese. I love the delicate approach here, the intensity of those floral aromas, and the silky nature of the mouthfeel. This classic Brunello really stands out." Robert Parker

    • Brunello di Montalcino "Altero" DOCG 2012

Brunello di Montalcino “Altero” DOCG 2012

A radiant bouquet of blackberries with a hint of leather in the background. Although it has a modern design, this wine from Montalcino is strongly attached to its homeland and gives the acidity typical of Montalcino's high altitudes the main role in its beguilingly generous taste. Attractive, smooth and wonderfully long-lasting! SUPERIORE.DE

"Nuances of red berries, violets and tobacco; compact structure with well integrated tannins, juice and perfectly integrated acidity, rich in finesse and with storage potential. It goes very well with game dishes." Vinum

"A pretty and ripe Brunello with lots of plum and cherry aromas. Full body, soft and chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Some dustiness within the texture. Dense and enticing." James Suckling

"Youthful ruby. Deep nose of fruit with hints of oak. Ripe, rich cherry fruit with a zesty, tangy core. Real interest and great tactile finish. Still firmly tannic for the moment." Jancis Robinson

"Here's a richly concentrated expression from one of the highest sites in Montalcino. The wine shows excellent balance and suppleness. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Altero flaunts the best characteristics of the hot vintage including beautifully saturated color intensity, seamless aromas and good texture richness. On that last point, I feel that the mouthfeel has been positively impacted by oak tannins. Dark cherry and dried blackberry are followed by spice, tar, licorice and grilled rosemary or Mediterranean herb. The wine is youthful and tight but should obtain a more polished approach with a few more years of bottle aging." Robert Parker

Brunello di Montalcino “Altero” DOCG 2013

Brilliant ruby red. The bouquet is beguiling with smoky notes, then some plum, blackberries, cloves. In drink Altero 2013 is very juicy with multi-layered fruit like blackberry and cherry. The fine tannin structure masterfully envelops the precise aromas. In the finish it is complex and not without some pressure - for us it is in balance and personality the archetype of the Poggio Antico style. SUPERIORE.DE

"Concentrated ruby with a slight garnet shimmer. Opened with notes of leather and dried porcini mushrooms, blackberries and cherry jam. Round and smooth on the palate, shows a lot of ripe fruit, raspberries, blackberries, the whole palette, opens with polished, fine tannin, shows many layers, rich finish." Falstaff

"Situated in the south of the zone, at 450 metres above sea level, the vineyards look southwest towards the Maremma coast, which sends warm afternoon breezes. Altero represents the estate's more modern Brunello, aged in 500 litre French tonneaux.. Inviting flavours of mint, blossom, plum and leather are joined by subtle toast. The oak is quite integrated, and the tannins are refined and smooth, while a sappy finish adds character." Decanter

"Ripe and rich aromas of dried fruits and figs with an orange undertone. Full body, chewy tannins and a rich finish. More fruit-forward style for this vintage." James Suckling

"This red is bright, with cherry, currant and Mediterranean scrub flavors accented by tar and tobacco. A beam of sweet ripe fruit is the focus, with the dense texture nicely integrated. The long finish is fresh and detailed, picking up graphite notes and a hint of blood orange." Wine Spectator

"The single-vineyard 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Altero boasts dark and saturated fruit with luscious cherry and blackberry aromas that have remained bright and balanced throughout the aging process. Those purple fruit tones are backed by light shadings of spice, leather, cola and balsam herb. This wine shows amazing depth and personality, and we can count on it to evolve gracefully over the next 10 years or more." Robert Parker

    • Brunello di Montalcino "Altero" DOCG 2015

Brunello di Montalcino “Altero” DOCG 2015

Altero - the flagship of the winery - is a beautiful, smooth wine with dark red cherries, cherry brandy, menthol, pine wood and spices. The silky finish is enveloped by sweet, floral notes. The top vintage 2015 is characterized by its fine texture and an impeccable overall balance with a high density. For us, it is one of the most rounded, precise and rich Brunello of this vintage, with an ageing potential that will satisfy every expectation. SUPERIORE.DE

"Engaging nose of raspberries and violets; the acidity accentuates, lots of juice and fullness, in short: a large, elegant Sangiovese with cut, fruitiness and length. Can mature." Vinum

"Bright, rich ruby grenade. Intense and clear nose, of violets and dark cherries, with cranberries in the background. Lots of crisp cherry on the palate, polished, well-integrated tannin, smooth and long." Falstaff

"One of the first things I notice in the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Altero is the increased richness or concentration (especially compared to the estate's classic Brunello from the same vintage). That wine is slightly more streamlined and contoured compared to the Altero that wears a heavier mantle made with thicker fiber and texture. This impression is especially evident on the bouquet where you pick up a hint of extra softness or ripeness that comes thanks to this warm vintage. The bouquet offers sensations of dried cherry skin or plum with sweet spice and moist potting soil." Robert Parker

"A beautiful cascade of blue and darker fruit precedes generous, enticing notes of saffron, dried orange rind, cumin, roasted thyme and nutmeg. Balanced and tightly framed on the medium-to full-bodied palate with mouthwatering fruit and crunchy acidity, coloring an ornately woven structure of silky tannins. Very long and velvety on the finish. Everything is where it should be." James Suckling

"I love the decadent edge to the ripe black cherries, cherries and cedar with some sandalwood. It’s full-bodied and very tight with polished, refined tannins that give the wine wonderful length and focus. So long and exquisite." James Suckling

"If you have visited the site that gives birth to this wine, it's impossible to forget the view. This is one of the only (maybe the only) vineyard in Montalcino from which you can see the twinkle of light that reflects off the Tyrrhenian Sea in the far distance. That altitude, exposure and open panorama shapes the very elegant Poggio Antico 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Altero. Specifically, the fruit comes from Il Vignone, located in the I Poggi area, at 500 meters in altitude (very high for Montalcino). Il Vignone measures just under five hectares and sees loose, well-draining soils. The wine reveals dark fruit intensity and concentration with black cherry, plum and tilled earth. There's a tangy hint of tilled earth or dried lilac as well. The character of this wine is more robust for sure, but that elegance that we saw in the classic Brunello is also present here." Poggio Anticos Riserva from the sunny and very balanced 2015 vintage is not initially dense, firm and closed like previous vintages. Rather, it captivates with its elegance, finesse and richness shortly after opening. Wonderful layers of wild berries, almonds, plums, herbs and cassis. Then very complex on the palate with textbook fruit composition and a fine spicy nerve that adds tension and complements the wonderfully chirpy arc of tannin, acidity and warm melting. As few as 9,000 bottles of the single vineyard Il Vignone are sold. SUPERIORE.DE

"A very opulent style with loads of black-cherry, plum, chocolate, cookie, and dark-chocolate aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied and very layered with loads of fruit and spices. Extremely long and flavorful. Needs time to come completely together, but so gorgeous." James Suckling

"The Poggio Antico 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a thickly textured and rich wine with fruit-driven flavors and extra fiber. The wine sings with the characteristics of this vintage that will be remembered for the sunshine, the warmth and the picture-perfect fruit. Each cluster hung from the vine with glorious perfection. There is more warmth and dark plum intensity here for sure, and you also get greater latitude in terms of those savory tones of leather, tobacco and tilled earth. The Riserva is sourced from the Il Vignone site at a high 500 meters above sea level where summer breezes keep the grapes healthy and ripe." Robert Parker

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016 · MAGNUM

About the winemakersPoggio AnticoTuscany | Montalcino
    Poggio Antico

Situated on a rocky promontory, the Poggio Antico winery in the heart of Montalcino offers a splendid south-westerly view. The earliest written records of the estate date back to the early 19th century, but until the 1970s there was no serious thought of viticulture. However, after the Milanese Giancarlo and Nuccia Gloder had acquired the 200 hectare estate in 1984, it progressed rapidly. Until 2017, Poggio Antico was managed with a sure hand by its youngest daughter Paola and her husband Alberto Montefiori. Today, the winery belongs to a Belgian investor who will continue to accompany it on its way to the top. With Paola Gloder and the oenologist Claudio Ferretti he is given maximum support.

Paola, who in the last 20 years has made a name for herself as one of the few women in the Brunello scene, has thoroughly cleaned up the vineyards and carried out radical renovations in the cellar. With these measures it has led the winery into the elite of Montalcino. The 32.5 hectares of vineyards, all located at higher altitudes at an average altitude of 450 metres above sea level, are densely planted and, thanks to their exemplary cultivation, always produce healthy and mature grapes that are selected with particular care in some vintages. Around the turn of the millennium, the vineyard had been extended by more than 17 hectares, all of which were approved for Brunello production.

The cellar contains the most modern preparation equipment. These include conical, temperature-controlled fermentation tanks, which form a perfect alliance with barrels of different sizes for the maturation of the Brunellos. The style of the wines pressed in Poggio Antico impresses with an outstanding basic quality. Depending on the typology, the plants differ depending on the barrel insert and the fermentation methods used. While the IGT wines Madre and Brunello di Montalcino Altero appear modern, the vintage wines of Brunello di Montalcino and Riserva can be classified more in the classical style. In the rankings of the European and American wine critics, the wines from Montalcino always occupy a safe top position. SUPERIORE.DE
