“Il Grigio” Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2017

Bright ruby red. Lively nose of small primary fruity red berries, subtle use of wood and a race and complexity that is impressive for the price. On the palate precise and firm, shows courage and determines its origin. Then a harmonious blend of tobacco, leather, cedar wood and of course cherry and plum. The finely tuned tannin carries this powerful and impressive Riserva into a long final. Impressive, not only because of its extremely moderate price! SUPERIORE.DE

"Sweet cherry, red plum, cedar, menthol, licorice, tobacco and leather all meld together in the Chianti Classico Riserva Il Grigio da San Felice. Silky tannins wrap it all together. This juicy, luscious Riserva can be enjoyed pretty much right out of the gate." Vinous

Pure power of aromas, dense and complex with black cherries, smoked ham, hearty herbs, tobacco, liquorice and many other nuances. Fascinating on the palate as well, firm tannins, impressive complexity and depth with noticeable potential for a maturing with potential for development. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense, dark ruby red. In the nose spicy and with finely drawn Amarena cherries underlined. Smooth and yet with a powerful trait, lively acidity, fresh on the tongue, fine spicy notes in the finish." Falstaff

"The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Grigio da San Felice is 80% Sangiovese and 20% other native grapes. Perfumed and lifted, with a touch more aromatic nuance than the straight Il Grigio, the 2015 has much to offer, even if the two wines aren't all that differentiated." VINOUS

"Here is a beautifully polished and elegant wine from the team at San Felice in Castelnuovo Berardegna. The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Grigio is a supple and silky expression that delivers ripe fruit tones that are framed by mineral tones with mild spice and fragrant red rose. The wine is structured and firm with delicately drying tannins on the close. Drink this accessible Gran Selezione within the next 10 years." Robert Parker

"Inviting aromas of ripe red-skinned fruit, baking spice, new leather, scorched earth and a whiff of tobacco fill the glass. Smooth and elegant, it boasts an almost weightless concentration, doling out ripe Morello cherry, star anise, black raspberry and white pepper alongside taut, velvety tannins." Wine Enthusiast

    • "Vigorello" Rosso Toscana IGT 2015

      “Vigorello” Rosso Toscana IGT 2015

Vigorello was already created in 1968 at the beginning of the Super Tuscan movement. It is a beautiful and extremely elegant wine that storms out of the glass with genuine tones of black fruits, liquorice, rose and dried lavender, Mediterranean herbs and a sweet hint of vanilla. The balance and complexity are outstanding and both point to the high level of 2015. It will develop even more complexity over time. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark, rich ruby. Intense and clear nose, of blackberries and dark currants. Powerful on the palate, dense tannins." Falstaff

"This is spicy, showing black pepper, saturated black cherry, plum, earth, iron and tobacco flavors. Dense and opaque, with a long aftertaste of dark fruit." Wine Spectator

"San Felice's 2015 Vigorello, a blend of the indigenous Pugnitello with Bordeaux varieties, is dark, unctuous and inviting. An infusion of crème de cassis, bittersweet chocolate, cloves, licorice, menthol and leather give Vigorello tons of character as well as personality. This is such a distinctive wine." Vinous

"Beautiful aromas of blackcurrants and blackberries with hints of lavender. Full body, chewy yet polished tannins and a slightly austere finish. This will turn out beautifully with a few years of bottle age." James Suckling

"A blend of 35% Pugnitello, 30% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2015 Vigorello seems to have the concept of vigor and strength at its very core. The wine opens to an inky dark appearance, with thick layers of dark fruit, spice, cured leather, camphor and campfire ash. You feel the sweet ripeness of the warm vintage in the soft and succulent quality of the background structure." Robert Parker

    • "Vigorello" Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

      “Vigorello” Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

A balsamic and enveloping bouquet, rich and mature Cassis scent, concentrated and deep on the palate, present tannins, nice juiciness and freshness, long. SUPERIORE.DE

"Full, dark ruby. Intense, present nose, smells of plums, cassis and mulberries, freshly chopped meat. The materiality of the base and course unfolds with notes of pomegranate, blueberry and plum, nice cardamom spice and a rich finish in the finale." Falstaff

"San Felice's 2013 Vigorello is a blend of Pugnitello, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Grilled herbs, lavender, mint, black cherry all flesh out in this deep, flavorful red. Silky tannins wrap around a core of plush fruit. This is an especially dense, rich style." Antonio Galloni

"The 2013 Vigorello is made with Bordeaux grapes (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot) blended with 35% of the recently rediscovered Pugnitello grape that was once more commonly planted across Central Italy. This is a dark and robust expression that boasts a very sharp and focused aromatic presentation. Like other wines from this classic vintage, this Tuscan red feels compacted and extra tight on the palate. It needs another few years before it fully opens and softens." Robert Parker

    • "Pugnitello" Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

      “Pugnitello” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

Deep dark ruby violet. Pugnitello inspires with intense notes of elderberry and blackberry, with subtle smoky notes in between, slightly peppery in the background. A juicy attack with a well-structured body, dense, gripping tannins, long and persistent with a salty component. SUPERIORE.DE

"Impressive, solid red with aromas and flavors of blackberries, licorice, tar and cedar. Full body. Chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Solid wine from this unique grape." James Suckling

"All the best elements of the San Felice house style come together in the 2016 Pugnitello. Inky, dark and racy, with superb depth, and 2016 packs a serious punch. Gravel, dried herbs, menthol, licorice, chocolate, blood orange, lavender and new French oak give this extroverted red tons of character. This is not a shy wine, by any means." Vinous

"This is a handsome bottle, both in terms of its label design and its contents. The 2016 Pugnitello is an inky dark expression with a finely chiseled bouquet that sees black fruit, spice and dusty mineral overtones. The mouthfeel offers mild dimension and depth, but there's enough beautiful intensity on the bouquet to make up for that. I'm not sure what to suggest as a drinking window, although I wouldn't push this wine for more than ten years. Indeed, it is best consumed when that bouquet is still so bright and intense, served with chicken-liver pate on crostini. Only 8,000 bottles were released." Robert Parker

"Powerful ruby, shining. Intense and appealing nose with many ripe cherries, blackberry, also a little raspberry, nice play, some liquorice. On the palate it shows a lot of fine-meshed tannin, covered with sweet enamel, juicy, very well integrated acidity, clear and straightforward". Falstaff

"This is a big and linear Chianti Classico with plenty of structure and depth. Chocolate, walnut and berry character. Medium to full body, chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish." James Suckling

"The 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Poggio Rosso is packed with intensity and dark fruit that peels back in thick layers. The wine ferments on the skins for up to 25 days followed by malolactic fermentation and aging in French oak for 20 months. It sees another 15 months in bottle before its commercial release. This is a robust and thickly textured expression of 100% Sangiovese that opens to inky garnet saturation. This wine is tight at its core but is well padded with generous layers of dark fruit and plum. It needs a few more years to relax and shed some of that youthful, nervous tension. San Felice

Actually, it's a whole village, not just a vineyard. Antica Pieve San Felice in Pincis, a historic complex with church and rural settlement near Castelnuovo Berardenga in southern Chianti Classico, dates back to the Etruscans, later hotly embroiled in the wars between Florence and Siena. Throughout history it has been owned by various local families, most recently the Grisaldi del Taja, co-founder of the Consorzio Chianti Classico. For centuries, olives and vines have been cultivated on the vast areas of woodland and agriculture.

As early as 1968, the company began to abandon the use of white grapes, as prescribed in the Chianti Classico, and pressed the Vigorello, the "expressive". Today it is often referred to as the first Supertuscan. The following year, the Il Grigio came onto the market, which was to set the trend for the development of the San Felice winery. The idea of pressing a wine only from Sangiovese was absolutely right.

So it was only logical that at the end of the 1970s, when the winery came into the possession of the Allianz Group, the first Cru, i.e. a Chianti Classico from a single vineyard, should also be produced; this vineyard is called Poggio Rosso, as is the wine of the same name.

The vineyards of San Felice are situated at an average altitude of about 400 metres above sea level in a rocky hilly area made up of different layers of rock, from Galestro to limestone and clay. The interplay of cool offshore winds at night and mild sea breezes during the day develops the fruity, elegant aroma.

In addition to Sangiovese, the long-term oenologist Leonardo Bellaccini also dedicates himself to many autochthonous grape varieties, many of which he has saved from extinction in collaboration with the Universities of Pisa and Florence. The "vicitiarium" cultivates more than a hundred grape varieties and has become a showcase project. Some of the old grape varieties are used as blending partners in Chianti Classico, the "Pugnitello" has become a rare and sought-after wine from the grape of the same name.

In the last decades a lot has been invested and lovingly restored. Not only in the vineyards and the cellar, but also in the historical building fabric. This is how Borgo San Felice, Relais & Chateaux with hotel, restaurant, osteria, wellness as well as event and conference facilities.

For some years now, the small Perolla winery near Massa Marittima in the Maremma has been part of the San Felice estate. Here red wines are produced as well as Rosato from Cabernet, Merlot, Ciliegiolo and Sangiovese, like the often excellent Poggibano. The white wine produced from the Maremannic grape variety Vermentino, which thrives particularly well in the Mediterranean climate near the Tyrrhenian coast, is particularly exciting.

San Felice also includes Campogiovanni in Montalcino, where excellent Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino have been built since the mid-1980s, as well as the young Bolgheri estate Bell.'Aja, where Bolgheri Rosso and Bolgheri Superiore are created, which you can also find in our assortment.
