“Perolla” Vermentino Toscana IGT 2022
Light straw yellow with greenish reflections. On the nose, some grapefruit, white flowers and freshly cut grass - the addition of a few percent Sauvignon Bianco gives it aromatic intensity and a certain depth. A sparkling white that finishes cheerfully with a light citrus note, making it a perfect terrace wine - solo or with light antipasti served cold. SUPERIORE.DE
"Fresh pears, green apples and hints of stones and jasmine on the nose. A medium-bodied and textured Vermentino with notes of lemon zest and a clean, pithy finish. Elegant." James Suckling

Chianti Classico DOCG 2021
Bright ruby red, open-hearted notes of cherry, raspberry and violet, paired with green pepper and cloves. Delicate on the palate, with a nice draw. Delicately fine tannins, lively supported by a fresh acidity framework with subtle extract sweetness, round off the immensely authentic and juicy Tuscan experience. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Chianti Classico is bright, floral and fruity, giving it great immediacy. Crushed flowers, cedar, tobacco and mint play with a core of vibrant Sangiovese fruit in this charming, mid-weight offering from San Felice." Vinous
"A fresh and delicious Chianti Classico with a lightness and crispness. Sour cherries and light orange blossom. Light and beautiful." James Suckling
"The 2021 Chianti Classico proves to be a versatile wine and a fundamentally food-friendly choice with lots of purple and blue fruits with hints of fragrant wild rose. The wine supports medium weight and lots of fresh acidity to cut through cream or butter-based cooking ingredients." Wine Advocate

“Il Grigio” Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2020
Radiant ruby red. Lively nose of small primary fruity red berries, discreet use of wood and an impressive breed and complexity for the price. Precise and taut on the palate, boldly and definitely showing its origin. Then a harmoniously balanced mix of tobacco, leather, cedar and of course cherry and plum. The finely tuned tannin carries this powerful and impressive Riserva into a long final. Impressive, and not only because of its exceedingly moderate price! SUPERIORE.DE
"The Chianti Classico Riserva Il Grigio da San Felice 2020 is a powerful, heady wine. Juicy black plum, leather, tobacco, menthol and oak are amplified in this decidedly rich Riserva. The 2020 isn't exactly subtle, but it's beautifully made, all style." Vinous
"Aromas of black cherry, bark and cedar follow through to a medium body, with firm and chewy tannins and a juicy finish. Still a little austere, but will develop magnificently with a year or two of bottle age." James Suckling
"Reverting to a spicy and savory taste profile, the 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Grigio shows a dark, mid-weight texture with extra heft that comes in the form of baked plum, candied cherry and spice." Wine Advocate
"Bright and fruity, with aromas of cherries, strawberries, roses and Mediterranean bushes. It does not lack structure, it remains balanced and long. Tobacco and mineral elements show on the finish." Wine Spectator

“Il Grigio” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2019
Dark shining ruby with garnet. Pure power of aromas, dense and complex of black cherries, smoked ham, savoury herbs, tobacco, liquorice and many other nuances. Equally fascinating on the palate, firm tannins, impressive complexity and depth with noticeable potential for developmental ageing. SUPERIORE.DE
"Discreet scents of undergrowth and damp earth mingle with tea, tobacco and thyme. The wine is round and flattering and coats the palate. As it expands, it shows its power. The dry tannins on the edges should soften with time, but it is still immediately inviting." Decanter
"It is spicy and racy with dark cherries, currants, savoury herbs, walnuts and sandalwood. Medium to full-bodied with ripe, powdery tannins, juicy acidity and a mineral backbone on the palate. Bright and fruit-driven on the finish." James Suckling
"A supple red with a firm grip that wraps around dark black cherry, blueberry and earth flavours. Lively, with a slight ridge to the chalky tannins on the ferruginous finish." Wine Spectator
"The San Felice 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Grigio stands out due to its velvety richness and expressive flavor profile. The wine delivers measured intensity with bright purple and black fruits, a good sense of energy and drive, and some lingering spiciness on the close. It is rich but not heavy." Wine Advocate

“Vigorello” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018
Vigorello was created in 1968 at the beginning of the Super Tuscan movement. It is a powerful yet finessed wine that storms from the glass with unadulterated tones of black fruits, liquorice, rose and dried lavender, Mediterranean herbs and a sweet hint of vanilla. The balance and structure are outstanding and it will develop even more complexity with time. SUPERIORE.DE
"Exuberant bouquet with aromas of black cherries. Licorice, leather, also pepper and fine tobacco spice; perfectly balanced tannin-acid framework with discreetly salty minerality, ell-long fruit finish." Vinum
"The 2018 Vigorello is a blend of Pugnitello, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. Ripe, racy and exuberant, the 2018 is laced with super-ripe red cherry, kirsch, mint, rose petal, blood orange and a kiss of new French oak. All the elements are nicely balanced. Even so, I would give the 2018 at least a year or two to come together." Vinous
"Very attractive blackberries and currants with hints of chocolate and fresh herbs, such as lemon grass. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and a fresh finish. Will age nicely, but why wait?" James Suckling
"When the wine was first produced in 1968, it started off as a Sangiovese-based blend. Cabernet Sauvignon was added in 1979, and Merlot came later. Recently, Pugnitello and Petit Verdot were introduced and the Sangiovese was taken out completely. This is a generous, full-bodied wine. The Pugnitello (a grape named after the Italian word for "fist" due to its tight concentration) underlines the wine's black color and earthy notes of black truffle. The other grapes add concentration, structure and black fruit flavors." Wine Advocate
"Still marked by vanilla and new oak, but this has loads of blackberry, black cherry and plum fruit. It's rich without overextraction, boasting dense tannins, superb balance and a long finish." Wine Spectator

“Pugnitello” Rosso Toscana IGT 2019
Deep dark ruby violet. Pugnitello delights with intense notes of elderberry and blackberry, subtle smoky notes in between, slightly peppery in the background. Juicy approach with a well-structured body, dense, gripping tannins, long and persistent with a salty component. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2019 Pugnitello is an intriguing wine. It offers up copious dark cherry fruit, plum, leather, coffee, licorice and dried herbs, showing notable depth and concentration. There's plenty of tannic heft, but this is Pugnitello, after all." Vinous
"A rich and dense red, showing some roasted sesame from the oak with red chili chocolate, dark olives, blackberries and hints of purple flowers and spice. Full and compact, with tons of fine-grained tannins rounding off the fruit. An outstanding pugnitello here. Drinkable now, but better after 2023." James Suckling
"This is a beautifully made wine and a special expression of one of Tuscany's great under-the-radar grapes. The 2019 Pugnitello stands proud as a monovarietal wine thanks to its dark concentration, soft ripeness, blackberry preserves, earth, black truffle and crushed rose. The full-bodied mouthfeel is extracted but also soft, giving this wine a medium-term drinking window. In fact, it is preferable to drink this bottle up until the 10-year mark when that velvety primary fruit is in its prime." Wine Advocate

The finely tuned tannin carries this powerful and impressive Riserva into a long final. Impressive, not only because of its extremely moderate price! SUPERIORE.DE
"Characterful stone fruit bouquet, aromas of undergrowth, pepper and porcini mushrooms; the attack is compact, finishing on notes of fresh fruit, also balsamic components." Vinum
"The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Grigio da San Felice is vibrant, fleshy and super-expressive. Bright acids lend brightness as this mid-weight, translucent Riserva opens in the glass. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, cinnamon, leather and rose petal are nicely layered. The 2019 is not a big Riserva, but it is elegant and impeccable in its balance." Vinous
"This has an initially shy nose that slowly reveals whiffs of camphor, underbrush, coconut and pipe tobacco. The tight, linear palate offers dried cherry, steeped prune, licorice and powdered sage alongside dusty tannins." Wine Enthusiast
"Il Grigio is one of the iconic Chianti Classico Riservas – and great value. Textbook aromas of worn leather, blackberries, raw cocoa and smoke define the delineated nose. Plump dark fruits exude the warmth and generosity of the Castelnuovo Berardenga sub-zone, while bright acidity and slightly powdery tannins lend mid-term cellaring potential." Decanter
"This juicy red revolves around a cherry core, with accents of earth, mint, stone and tobacco. Balanced, needing another couple of years to hit its stride. Best from 2024." Wine Spectator
"This is a terrific value. Showing a lively but saturated ruby color, the San Felice 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Grigio offers a flurry of aromas, including red fruit, dried cherry, grilled rosemary, crushed stone and wet brick. The wine is all Sangiovese, although a pinch of Pugnitello is used in some vintages, with only the best berries selected by an optical sorter. This vintage is especially vertical and forthcoming compared to past editions." Wine Advocate
"Fairly complex, but still bright, with spiced red plums and cherries, bark, leather and a hint of mushroom savoriness. Quite integrated and silky with a medium to full body, rounded by firm but velvety tannins. Long, yet subtle and fruit-expressive. Already delicious now, but you should hold this for two years and wait for additional complexity to emerge." James Suckling
"One of the most iconic labels of the typology, a territorial symbol in Castelnuovo Berardenga. Small fruits on the nose, raspberry jam, cinnamon touches and iris. Iodine-tannins on the palate, fruity-floral return, very pleasant and elegant drinkability." Luca Gardini

“Poggio Rosso” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017
Poggio Rosso Gran Selezione has an enormous richness of fruit that layers beautifully. Very beautiful interpretation of the Sangiovese grape with a dense core and lots of padding around it. Rich ruby garnet, very fine texture and structure on the palate, which only fully reveals itself with the necessary time in the glass. It is tense and powerful in its youthful years, the acidity and also the well-built tannin are programmed to develop, for only in a few years will it fully reveal its full elegance and greatness. SUPERIORE.DE
"This is broad, evoking leather, iron, sanguine, plum and cherry flavors. Open-knit and amply structured, revealing equilibrium and length. The aftertaste persists with a spicy finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Poggio Rosso is a bold, powerful wine. A blast of intense red fruit, scorched earth, licorice and new oak make a strong first impression. The 2017 is not a subtle wine in any way, but it has the vibrancy and intensity to drink well for a number of years." Vinous
"The San Felice 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Poggio Rosso is a standout wine with a near or medium-term drinking window. Despite the heat of the vintage, this wine is unexpectedly tonic and tight from the start with lots of bold primary intensity contrasted against tobacco, cigar box and earthy spice. This full-bodied wine shows the best side of a challenging vintage, and although there is a hint of openness or oxidation, it drinks very nicely right now. Fruit is sourced from across a 2.5-hectare plot along the forest line that was planted primarily to Sangiovese in the 1970s." Wine Advocate
"Very floral with sweet berry and cherry character, as well as sage and lavender. Full-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and a long, fresh finish. Compact and beautiful. Racy finish. Already polished and tight, but better after 2023." James Suckling

Poggio Rosso Gran Selezione from the top year 2016 is a paragon of intensity and a fullness of fruit that layers beautifully. "Bright ruby red. In the nose of ripe forest fruits underlined by delicate leather spice. On the palate gripping with wide-meshed tannin, delicate dryness, but has plenty of salt, seems mineral, can and should still mature." Falstaff
"From a parcel originally planted in the 1970s with selected Sangiovese clones. Appropriately developing in its aroma profile, this doles out tobacco, bay leaf, leather, dried thyme and a suggestion of chestnut. The palate is bright with sour cherry, tart redcurrant, and a kick of tangy acidity. The tannins are compact and dense - still quite chewy, this could do with another year or so in the cellar." Decanter
"This bright red features cherry, raspberry, floral and spice aromas and flavors allied to a silky texture. Iron, sanguine and toasty accents add complexity. Firm and built to age, with a terrific finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Poggio Rosso is a powerful, bold wine that captures all the natural intensity of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, espresso, lavender and French oak are all amped up. Exuberant and generous in the glass, with superb richness, the 2016 has so much to offer. The style is extroverted - there is no doubting that - but all the elements are impeccably balanced." Vinous
"The San Felice 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Poggio Rosso shows a saturated appearance with dark garnet and ruby colors. Following that beautiful appearance in the glass, the wine opens to cassis, wild cherry, spice and toasted wood. The oak element is an important component of the mouthfeel that shows solid, mid-weight heft and long, polished tannins that would be a nice accompaniment to a filet mignon." Wine Advocate
"A beautiful, soft-textured Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, showing currant, berry and black-cherry aromas with some floral and lavender undertones. It's full-bodied, yet balanced and refined. Super quality." James Suckling

Actually, it's a whole village, not just a vineyard. Antica Pieve San Felice in Pincis, a historic complex with church and rural settlement near Castelnuovo Berardenga in southern Chianti Classico, dates back to the Etruscans, later hotly embroiled in the wars between Florence and Siena. Throughout history it has been owned by various local families, most recently the Grisaldi del Taja, co-founder of the Consorzio Chianti Classico. For centuries, olives and vines have been cultivated on the vast areas of woodland and agriculture.
As early as 1968, the company began to abandon the use of white grapes, as prescribed in the Chianti Classico, and pressed the Vigorello, the "expressive". Today it is often referred to as the first Supertuscan. The following year, the Il Grigio came onto the market, which was to set the trend for the development of the San Felice winery. The idea of pressing a wine only from Sangiovese was absolutely right.
So it was only logical that at the end of the 1970s, when the winery came into the possession of the Allianz Group, the first Cru, i.e. a Chianti Classico from a single vineyard, should also be produced; this vineyard is called Poggio Rosso, as is the wine of the same name.
The vineyards of San Felice are situated at an average altitude of about 400 metres above sea level in a rocky hilly area made up of different layers of rock, from Galestro to limestone and clay. The interplay of cool offshore winds at night and mild sea breezes during the day develops the fruity, elegant aroma.
In addition to Sangiovese, the long-term oenologist Leonardo Bellaccini also dedicates himself to many autochthonous grape varieties, many of which he has saved from extinction in collaboration with the Universities of Pisa and Florence. The "vicitiarium" cultivates more than a hundred grape varieties and has become a showcase project. Some of the old grape varieties are used as blending partners in Chianti Classico, the "Pugnitello" has become a rare and sought-after wine from the grape of the same name.
In the last decades a lot has been invested and lovingly restored. Not only in the vineyards and the cellar, but also in the historical building fabric. This is how Borgo San Felice, Relais & Chateaux with hotel, restaurant, osteria, wellness as well as event and conference facilities.
For some years now, the small Perolla winery near Massa Marittima in the Maremma has been part of the San Felice estate. Here red wines are produced as well as Rosato from Cabernet, Merlot, Ciliegiolo and Sangiovese, like the often excellent Poggibano. The white wine produced from the Maremannic grape variety Vermentino, which thrives particularly well in the Mediterranean climate near the Tyrrhenian coast, is particularly exciting.
San Felice also includes Campogiovanni in Montalcino, where excellent Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino have been built since the mid-1980s, as well as the young Bolgheri estate Bell.'Aja, where Bolgheri Rosso and Bolgheri Superiore are created, which you can also find in our assortment.
