“Piandorino” Rosso Toscana IGT 2019
They could hardly have come from more different places: Caroline Pobitzer grew up in South Tyrol, in a Renaissance castle, and was the guardian of a 600-year-old wine cellar there for decades – the oldest and largest in Europe. Jan Hendrik Erbach came from Karlsruhe, studied viticulture and oenology and gained experience in France. In 1997, the two of them jointly founded Pian dell'Orino – a small estate of just under six hectares of Sangiovese, right on the border of Montalcino's most famous address: the Tenuta il Greppo of the Biondi-Santi family. Not a bad neighbour. Biodynamic since 2003, Demeter-certified since 2018. 22 different Sangiovese clones on seven plots, lunar calendar for pruning, nettle and camomile tea for the soil. Jan and Caroline work on an area that only allows for around 17,000 bottles a year – for all the estate's wines combined.

“Piandorino” Rosso Toscana IGT 2021
Piandorino, the "entry-level wine" from Pian dell'Orino, represents its noble origins with great class. Light, bright ruby red in colour, with a beautiful bouquet of dark cherry, fresh plum, peppery notes and delicate vanilla tones. Juicy fruit on the palate, accompanied by a flattering woody note, finely balanced tannins and good length. This wine is fine and beautifully delicate on the finish. The grapes for Piandorino come from the estate's younger Brunello vines and around 3,000 bottles are produced each year. SUPERIORE.DE

Bright red colour. Sweet spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla complement the aromas of dark red and black cherries on the fresh, sexy nose. Lively, juicy and sweet on the palate, but with a tactile mouthfeel and spicy flavours of red cherries, herbs and sassafras. The youthful, crisp finish, which emphasises notable but polished oak nuances, is pleasantly persistent. A real plus point is the balance of this wine, it is a spicy, well-structured Rosso on a clear Brunello level and a real beauty! SUPERIORE.DE

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigneti del Versante” DOCG 2020
The name says it all: wines of the slopes. Vigneti del Versante is made from grapes from the Cancello Rosso parcel and the lower part of Pian Bassolino – sites, which lie at an altitude of 350 metres and have a soil of exceptional geological diversity. Calcareous clay, slightly decomposed marl, sandstone, flysch – layers from the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods, interspersed with volcanic influences from nearby Monte Amiata. In the Cancello Rosso vineyard, an increased proportion of sand in the topsoil provides the typical spicy and nutty flavours of the berries; Pian Bassolino contributes with a calcareous density. Jan Erbach sees the Vigneti del Versante as the search for a harmony that is more than the sum of its parts – like the different voices of an orchestra that only find their sound together. Spontaneous fermentation, strict selection of grapes on the table, no technological additives, maturation in large oak barrels without filtration.

Great fibre and density on the palate, with much of this power coming from the heavier soils of the vineyards. The overall expression is profound and precise, with pungent aromas of wild berries, liquorice, lavender and lightly toasted almonds. Violets on the finish, supported by a silky, fine texture. Brunello di Montalcino “Bassolino di Sopra” DOCG 2019
There are vineyards that make no compromises. Bassolino di Sopra comes from the highest section of the Pian Bassolino vineyard – a single, clearly defined microclimate at 330 to 390 metres, south to south-west facing, with a view of Monte Amiata. The soil belongs to the Santa Fiora geological formation, which characterises the south-eastern slope of Montalcino: slatey siltstone with calcareous deposits, interspersed with clay and marl, with volcanic specks from the eruptions of the nearby volcano. An earth that carries millions of years – and shows it in every sip. Caroline and Jan only vinify Bassolino di Sopra in exceptional vintages. The selection is rigorous: multiple selections in the vineyard, double hand-picking, spontaneous fermentation on natural yeast, weeks of maceration on the skins, then years of ageing in large oak barrels. No intervention that is not mandatory.

The small but fine Brunello vineyard Pian dell'Orino is located on traditional land in the immediate vicinity of the estate of the famous Biondi-Santi family. It was founded in 1996 by Caroline Pobitzer out of love for Tuscany and out of joy in viticulture. After Jan Hendrik Erbach from Karlsruhe, graduate of the renowned Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences, fell in love with the estate owner from South Tyrol in the winery, both expanded and modernised the estate with a great deal of passion and wine knowledge and finally made it one of the leading wineries in Montalcino.
The wines come from four different vineyards which cover a total of six hectares and are cultivated according to the biodynamic guidelines of Rudolf Steiner. In order to be able to press individual and recognizable drops from each location in the new wine cellar completed in 2007, the two winegrowers have carefully studied the individual soil structures in recent years. From the very beginning they have concentrated on the local Sangiovese grosso grape variety. In addition to the near-natural cultivation, mini yields, hand-picked grapes and an appropriate maturation in wood in Pian dell'Orino plants are created that are extremely complex and have a broad spectrum of aromas.
For Caroline and Jan Hendrik, moon phases that have an effect on life and nature are important decision-making aids for their work, as they regulate the growth of the vines and consolidate the quality of the wines. In the cellar, the energy consumption is kept within limits according to a well-thought-out system of supply and exhaust air. The materials used throughout the operation promote optimum exchange of humidity and air.
The impressive development of Pian dell'Orino have long been duly honoured by relevant wine critics. For exampleRobert Parker, Brunello des on the way between Montalcino and Castelnuovo dell'Abate in an outstanding microclimatic location have already been awarded a fabulous 97 points. SUPERIORE.DE
"It is admirable what Pian dell'Orino in just a few years ... In this winery, the Sangiovese wine stands out for its striking finesse and crystalline purity."Robert Parker
