“Nerina” Bianco Etna DOC 2019
Multi-layered aroma profile of dried apple, pear, camomile, exotic fruits and ash. On the palate full of grace, dry, fruity and intense, a delicate acidity and the fine minerality give freshness. Very elegant and attractive white from Etna with good potential and never-ending experience factor: every sip opens up new facets of this very special wine. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Girolamo Russo 2019 Etna Bianco Nerina is a charming white wine from volcanic soils with some of the softness and floral intensity of these indigenous grapes and the salty or mineral notes that come thanks to this volcanic territory." Robert Parker

“San Lorenzo” Bianco Etna DOC 2019
Giuseppe Russo farms part of the 12-hectare San Lorenzo vineyard at an altitude of about 750 metres on the slopes of Mount Etna near Randazzo. The lava flows of recent decades have created a porous soil here that is rich in volcanic rock and therefore provides excellent drainage.
Just 1,200 bottles were filled from this first vintage. The vines, which are over 80 years old, produce an extremely low yield, which makes the result all the more complex and multi-layered. Fine saltiness, light stone fruit and a well-dosed extract sweetness flow from the glass. On the palate, a good structure, the acidity and the noticeable minerality support the discreet aromas of white peach and grapefruit. The finish is smoky and has a nice salty note. It is at its best at 12°, and in a few years it will be even better! SUPERIORE.DE
"Carricante is one of Italy's most promising grapes, and I'm so happy to see it in the hands of one of my all-time favorite producers. The other white wine made by Girolamo Russo is a blend of white grapes, and the 2019 Etna Bianco San Lorenzo perfectly complements this portfolio with a more structured, age-worthy and oak-aged alternative. This old-vine expression offers white peach, citrus and melon, but the standout aromas here are those distinctive Etna overtones of ash, smoke and mineral. This is a sharp and beautifully etched white wine. Fruit comes from the lower part of the San Lorenzo vineyard at 740 meters in elevation. Only 1,200 bottles were released, and this is the inaugural vintage of Giuseppe Russo's newest creation." Robert Parker

“Feudo” Rosso Etna DOC 2017
Feudo - in radiant ruby garnet - shows lively aromas of raspberry, mint, minerals and flowers that continue on the palate full of energy. This richness, harmony and freshness also accompany the almost endless finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Cask sample. Just mid crimson. Deep, aromatic raspberry fruit with hints of stalks. Sweet, intense raspberry fruit palate wrapped up in powdery tannins. Elegantly built but at the same time lots of concentration." Jancis Robinson
"The 2017 Etna Rosso Feudo launches up from the glass with an intense and rich display of crushed black cherries, balsamic-tinged brown spice and incense. Its textures are silky, even fleshy in feel, with a saturating mix of citrus-tinged, tart red and black fruits, all motivated by vibrant acidity. This boasts tremendous concentration yet carries it well, as a coating of fine tannin struggles to emerge, creating a push and pull of sweet and sour tension." Vinous
"I love the spice and tangy fruit you get in the 2017 Etna Rosso Feudo, which is spicier and more exotic in character compared to past vintages. The effect is lovely, because the wine is well balanced by very crisp, crunchy wild berry fruit. This is one of the most beautiful, delicate and yet fragile expressions you can get from Etna. The wine is brimming with finesse and elegance. I tasted it right after opening the bottle and again about 24 hours later, and its evolution is impressive and multifaceted, adding more complexity and intensity the longer the wine is in the glass." Giuseppe Russo farms part of the 12-hectare San Lorenzo vineyard at an altitude of about 750 metres on the slopes of Mount Etna near Randazzo. The lava flows of recent decades have created a porous soil here that is rich in volcanic rock and therefore provides excellent drainage.
San Lorenzo, named after the Roman deacon and martyr, comes up trumps with irresistible aromas of red cherry, marzipan, quinine, blood orange and mineral stones. Superbly nuanced on the palate with polished tannins, remarkable length and great elegance. San Lorenzo from Etna - a confession and one of many examples that the red wines from Etna can definitely keep up with the fine elegant representatives of Nebbiolo. SUPERIORE.DE
"Cask sample. Just mid crimson. Minerally raspberry with iron hints and notes of orange skin. Concentrated yet really fine and with bags of powdery tannins that never overpower the fruit. Very long and poised. A real cru." Jancis Robinson
"Wet stone, wild strawberries and nuances of sweet spice waft up from the 2017 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo. This pretty and soft-textured effort seduces with its ripe and fleshy red fruits and rosy inner floral tones. There's not a hard edge in sight, yet balance remains firmly intact as the 2017 leans more toward sour cherry and licorice through the long, dramatic finale." Vinous
"The 2017 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo is beautifully balanced and bright. Indeed, San Lorenzo is often my favorite single-vineyard expression from Beppe Russo, although I preferred some of the other expressions in this unique vintage. The wine shows elegance and purity, all clearly within the context of a warm growing season that produced overripe aromas in many of the red wines made on Etna. This expression holds back in terms of that overt ripeness, stopping cautiously at black fruit, sweet spice and volcanic ash. Pull this one out for a grilled veal or pork dinner." Robert Parker

“San Lorenzo” Rosso Etna DOC 2018
Giuseppe Russo farms part of the 12-hectare San Lorenzo vineyard at an altitude of about 750 metres on the slopes of Mount Etna near Randazzo. The lava flows of recent decades have created a porous soil here that is rich in volcanic rock and therefore provides excellent drainage.
San Lorenzo, named after the Roman deacon and martyr, comes up trumps with irresistible aromas of red cherry, marzipan, quinine, blood orange and mineral stones. San Lorenzo from Etna - a confession and one of many examples that the red wines from Etna can definitely keep up with the fine elegant representatives of Nebbiolo. SUPERIORE.DE
"Just mid ruby and the palest of the 2018 Girolamo Russo wines so far. Still tight nose with hints of black pepper, raspberry and liquorice and hints of raw meat. Gorgeous complexity but still a little unyielding. Tightly built, embryonic fruit palate with long powdery tannins. Jewel-like acidity framing the compact raspberry fruit. Elegant and with a compact build. Lots of class here." Jancis Robinson
"A deep nose with ripe fruit, almost wild-strawberry and raspberry jam, together with dark minerals and a hint of dried herb. Medium-bodied with good acidity drive, ultra fine tannins and clean fruit flavors that last long. Not overly complex, but very clean and fresh." James Suckling
"Aromas of red berries, Mediterranean scrub, damp earth and floral notes waft out of the glass. Elegant to the point of being ethereal, the vibrant, tangy palate offers juicy wild cherry, blood orange, spice and saline alongside lithe tannins. Bright acidity keeps it balanced." Wine Enthusiast"Beautifully light and graceful as it pours from the bottle, this is another epic wine from Giuseppe Russo of Girolamo Russo. His 2018 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo is firm and structured, even more so than the other single-vineyard expressions from this vintage. The San Lorenzo parcel measures eight hectares at 730 to 770 meters in altitude and is planted to 70-year-old vines. The bouquet is detailed and fine, and it takes a minute or two to compose a list of adjectives to describe it. There is wild berry and blue flower for sure, and the wine fleshes out nicely with mineral aromas, smoke and tar. This release of 4,000 bottles is a journey under the volcano." Robert Parker

Bright ruby red. Refined raspberry and red cherry on the nose, along with quinine and floral notes that develop with further aeration. Fresh aromas of red berries and smoked beef, plus hints of violets and orange zest. Downright exotic on the palate with plenty of lush extract sweetness and a fine tannin and fresh, mineral dry finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"A fresh and clean red with cherry, clove, orange-peel and thyme aromas and flavors. Medium body. Very balanced and vivid." James Suckling
"What a beauty this wine is. The 2017 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo offers a delicate embroidery of wild berry fruit, mountain herbs, blue flowers, wild rose, sweet almond and candied tangerine. You feel some of the heat of the vintage, but in the relatively cool climate of Etna and with the late-ripening Nerello Mascalese grape, this hot vintage has added to the intensity and the complexity of the wine. The hot vintage is an important asset in this case. I love the depth and definition and nervous tension you get here." Robert Parker

“Calderara Sottana” Rosso Etna DOC 2017
Only 1,800 bottles of this vintage were bottled. Extremely complex bouquet of blackberry, currant and sour cherry, with perfectly integrated notes of Mediterranean herbs. Broad and elegant on the palate, supported by a filigree acid wire that makes it fresh and lively. A great wine of excellent structure and with remarkable persistence and depth in taste. SUPERIORE.DE
"Cask sample. Just mid crimson. Deep, brooding, sweet and intense. Ripe, deep fruit palate. Long and perfumed and with plenty of velvety tannins. The high acidity indicates this hasn’t gone through malo yet." Jancis Robinson

Passopisciaro is the name of the small village on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. From here the resurrection of Etna Rosso developed. Situated between Randazzo and Solichiata, it is home to some of the very best sites at 600 to 900 metres above sea level, created on pure lava. Only 30 kilometres as the crow flies from Taormina or Catania. Ancient stock cultures, called Albarello, which can be quite a hundred years old, are rooted here directly in the volcanic rock. Hence the name of the place, in regional dialect means "Sciara" viz. "lava". So you could do Passopisciaro with "Goes on the lava" Translate. If you continue to think freely, you'll also be able to "lava-rooting" and can also be applied to humans.
That's the kind of guy Giuseppe Russo is. He comes from Passopisciaro and is deeply rooted here. And he doesn't want to be anywhere else. That's why he has been building a new winery called Girolamo Russo with old vines since 2005 with joy, a lot of effort and an unbelievable amount of work. Slowly and steadily, and again and again long negotiated, if one of the "old" of the place and no descendants were there or had long since moved to the city. Then Giuseppe tried to buy or lease these old vineyards. Together with the property of his father, after whom the vineyard is named, it now covers 15 hectares, surrounded by hazelnut bushes and olive trees.
With the minimal yields that such ancient Albarello wine trees still deliver, you almost have to fight for the bottles, so rare - and so much in demand - they are now. No wonder, because Giuseppe Russo works out the fine differences of the floors like hardly anyone else. Different old lava flows produce different mineral notes, which then produce these fine differences in the equally different microclimate. Of course, such a meticulous winemaking can only be carried out with appropriate organic soil management. Hardly anyone uses less spray than Giuseppe. And manual work is necessary anyway, as these old poles could not be machined even if they did not stand on these steep terraces.
"Wine from Etna couldn't be more typical." wrote a wine journalist the other day. And hit the nail on the head. Who wants to know how such a wine from the volcano, how such a Nerello Mascalese actually tastes, whether it can really be as elegant as Barolo or Burgundy, whether this wine is really as elegant as Barolo or Burgundy, whether it is as good as a wine from the volcano, or whether it is as elegant as a Nerello Mascalese. "hype" is really justified, he once afforded a wine from Girolamo Russo. But be careful. Repeat orders are almost guaranteed. SUPERIORE.DE
