!["Perano" Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2022]()
“Perano” Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2022
The "Riserva" is the ageing category prescribed by the Chianti Classico production regulations, requiring a minimum of 24 months' total ageing, of which at least three months must be spent in the bottle. At Tenuta Perano near Gaiole, the historic heart of the appellation, the estate has also opted for 24 months in wooden barrels – a choice made by the estate rather than a requirement of the regulations – which gives the Sangiovese and Merlot their elegant, refined character. The vines grow at an altitude of 500 metres, in a natural south-west-facing amphitheatre whose microclimate bestows upon the grapes exceptional ripeness and freshness in equal measure. Selected by hand, the wine ferments in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with frequent pumping over of the cap to ensure complete phenolic extraction, before undergoing 24 months' ageing in wooden barrels followed by a further period in the bottle.

!["Rialzi" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2021]()
“Rialzi” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2021
In 2014, Tenuta Perano near Gaiole became the first Frescobaldi estate in Chianti Classico – the appellation's historic heartland, where the family had not previously owned an estate of its own. Rialzi takes its name from the three natural terraces on which it grows, at an altitude of 500 metres and above, in south-west-facing Alberese soils, nestled within a natural amphitheatre of steep slopes. Harvested by hand and selected again in the cellar, the Sangiovese ferments in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with skin contact and gentle pumping over to ensure gentle extraction. This is followed by 24 months in barriques, before a further period in the bottle completes the 36-month ageing process, thereby significantly exceeding the minimum ageing period of 30 months required for the Gran Selezione.

Anyone driving up from Gaiole in Chianti to Tenuta Perano quickly understands why Frescobaldi does not regard this place as just another estate. The vineyards lie high, the slopes are steep and the vines form a natural amphitheatre opening towards the southwest. At around 500 metres, intense sunlight meets cooler air and pronounced temperature differences – conditions that are demanding yet highly promising for late-ripening Sangiovese.
For the Frescobaldi family, Perano marked the entry into the historic heart of Chianti Classico. Frescobaldi acquired the estate and its vineyards between Radda and Gaiole in 2014. The place itself reaches much further back: as early as 1716, Perano lay within the historic Chianti zone officially delimited by Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici. The focus here is therefore less on a long Frescobaldi history than on a very clear idea: to let a special place speak through Sangiovese as precisely as possible.
Between Radda and Gaiole – Sangiovese at 500 metres
Tenuta Perano lies at around 500 metres in the heart of Chianti Classico. For red grape varieties, this is already a demanding altitude, and particularly so for late-ripening Sangiovese. Yet the shape of the vineyards creates a crucial balance: the natural amphitheatre, open towards the southwest, captures light and warmth, while altitude, steep slopes and air movement help the grapes preserve their freshness.
Stony soils add another defining element to this landscape. Together with the altitude, they create conditions in which Sangiovese can ripen slowly while retaining tension. Sheer opulence is therefore not the key theme of this place, but rather the balance between ripeness, freshness and structure.
This combination is precisely what makes Gaiole so interesting for Sangiovese. The grapes receive enough time and light to ripen fully without losing the influence of altitude. Structure and ripe fruit therefore meet the freshness and tannic precision that are among the characteristic strengths of Chianti Classico.
Three wines, three levels of focus on Chianti Classico
The estate's range is pleasingly concentrated. Tenuta Perano Chianti Classico, the Riserva and Rialzi do not simply represent three arbitrary levels of ageing, but bring origin and selection into increasingly precise focus.
Tenuta Perano Chianti Classico forms the starting point. It brings together the estate's different vineyards and thus offers the most immediate impression of how Frescobaldi interprets this high-altitude part of Chianti Classico. The Riserva takes the idea a step further, focusing more closely on structure, depth and development without losing sight of the character of the altitude.
This creates a clear progression without requiring the wines to explain or replace one another. Each has its own role – from the broader picture of the estate to an increasingly concentrated focus on particularly suitable parcels.
Rialzi – Sangiovese with maximum precision of origin
This idea reaches its most precise expression with Rialzi. The name refers to the terraced rises that characterise parts of Perano's vineyards. As a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, the wine places Sangiovese entirely at the centre and focuses particularly closely on the distinctive features of this high-altitude part of Gaiole.
Rialzi is therefore not simply the most powerful version of Perano, but the estate's narrowest definition of origin. While Tenuta Perano and the Riserva paint a broader picture of the vineyards, here the idea is condensed into a particularly clearly defined expression of Sangiovese and place.
That is precisely where Tenuta Perano's strength lies. It does not need a large number of grape varieties and styles to demonstrate diversity. The differences arise within Sangiovese itself – through altitude, slope, soils, selection and an increasingly precise concentration on origin.
A young Frescobaldi estate with an old Chianti soul
Within the Frescobaldi world, Perano therefore occupies a special position. The estate has belonged to the family only since 2014, yet it lies in a landscape whose winemaking history is among the oldest and best known in Tuscany. Rather than imposing a new stylistic idea on this history, Frescobaldi consistently focuses on the place itself.
The natural amphitheatre, the altitude, the stony slopes and late-ripening Sangiovese already provide more than enough character. Tenuta Perano, the Riserva and Rialzi simply translate it with different levels of focus.
Perhaps that is precisely the estate's most convincing quality: Perano does not need to taste like Nipozzano, Pomino, CastelGiocondo or Castiglioni in order to belong unmistakably to Frescobaldi. It is enough for the estate to taste as clearly as possible of Gaiole and Chianti Classico. SUPERIORE.DE
