Bright ruby red colour and the typical vinous, slightly grassy bouquet of the Pinot Noir. The taste is elegant and refined, pleasantly full-bodied and balanced. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Pinot Nero Red Angel captivates with a dusty and floral mix of peppery wild strawberries, sage and lavender. This is soft textured with a pretty inner sweetness complementing ripe cherries and inner rose tones. "Wine should move us, trigger emotions and be authentic," says the Jermann winery, whose bottles can deliver on precisely this promise. What began in Friuli more than 140 years ago with the Austrian winemaker Anton Jermann was continued by his great-grandchild Silvio from the 1970s onwards with a uniquely avant-garde approach.
Even as a young winemaker, Silvio strove to swim against the tide of Italian traditions in order to produce wines according to his own vision and without depending on market trends. During his oenology studies and several trips overseas, he learned very innovative production techniques for the then conservative Italian wine world, which would later enable him to set new quality standards in the Friulian wine scene.
His first white wine blend, "Vintage Tunina", made from Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana and Picolit grapes, ushered in a new era for the Jermann winery - and for Friuli Venezia Giulia as a whole - in which the wines became much more flavourful and aromatic. Silvio Jermann was one of the first winemakers in the region to blend local grape varieties with international ones and, moreover, to dispense with the maturation period in wooden barrels.
In the meantime, his other white wines such as "Capo Martino", "Così Sia", the Chardonnay "W ... Dreams" and the Riesling "Afix" have also become absolute cult wines of the region. The winery from the southern Collio region received the individual award "Best White Wine of the Year" from the wine guide Gambero Rosso in 2018 for its "Capo Martino" 2016. However, Jermann pursues an equally incomparable production philosophy in the red wine sector. Among the most impressive reds of the house are without doubt the autochthonous "Pignacolusse", the Pinot Noir "Red Angel" and the Blaufränkisch "Blau&Blau", which recalls Jermann's Austrian roots.
Goal-oriented and without compromising on quality, Silvio was destined to make a lasting impression in the wine world from the very beginning. To enjoy his well-deserved retirement, the talented winemaker sold some shares in his family business in spring 2021. The new co-owners of one of the most famous and largest wineries in Friuli is now the noble Marchesi Antinori family. The Florentines continue to manage the vineyard area of over 175 hectares, which extends to the main vineyard in Farra d'Isonzo in the province of Gorizia and to the Ruttars vineyard in the paradisiacal Collio DOC area, which Silvio acquired in 2007.
Jermann thus fits ideally into Antinori's international portfolio of unique wineries and will continue to be able to successfully meet the challenges of the times in the form of a family business. Under this excellent leadership, there is no doubt that the Jermann name will continue to produce great wines that can duly represent Friuli and delight the international wine connoisseur world.
