    • "Berardenga" Chianti Classico DOCG 2017

      “Berardenga” Chianti Classico DOCG 2017

Sangiovese in its purest form: Medium ruby, rich in fruity and floral aromas, complex, deep and well-cut with further development potential. A full-bodied and harmonious Chianti-Classico of highly authentic design. SUPERIORE.DE

"Shining, rich ruby. In the nose after elderberries and black currants, underlined by noble herbal spice notes. Balanced and clear in the drink, a juicy dress stretches out, delicate melting with a salty finish. Falstaff

"Mid ruby. Inviting cherry and iron nose with a hint of liquorice. Supple cherry palate with plenty of coating tannins. Succulent and suave." Jancis Robinson

"The 2017 Chianti Classico Berardenga is an absolutely gorgeous wine. Racy, powerful and sumptuous in the glass, the 2017 offers terrific depth and textural resonance. Sweet black cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and spice bring out the darker side of Sangiovese. Bold and racy, the 2017 will drink beautifully right out of the gate." Vinous

"The 2017 Chianti Classico Berardenga is a fine and precise wine that shows some of the warmth, good cheer and exuberance of the vintage, but that ultimately proves to be better contained and more carefully etched than I would have anticipated. The bouquet starts off with black fruit and light shadings of spice, but the best part is in those mineral aromas of flint and slate. Serve it with stuffed red peppers." Robert Parker

"Rich, with black cherry, plum, iron and violet aromas and flavors, this red is suave and multidimensional. Vibrant and balanced, featuring a lingering finish that echoes the fruit and adds a spice accent." Wine Spectator

"Aromas of plum, exotic spice, eucalyptus and a hint of violet form the nose. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly structured and has nice tension, offering mature black cherry, blackberry compote and licorice accompanied by polished tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"A very fresh 2017 with plenty of tight and linear tannins that give the wine energy and drive. Medium to full body. Racy finish. This is impressive. Fantastic texture and complexity on the palate with purple fruit and wet earth." James Suckling

    • "Berardenga" Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2016

“Berardenga” Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2016

In the dream year 2016 unsurpassably good: haunting and wonderfully clear in colour, the Chianti Classico Riserva unfolds its inviting fragrance reminiscent of ripe cherries with notes of spices. Dense and extremely juicy in taste, with a good tannin pack, full of personality and authenticity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Noble, bright ruby red. In the nose of rich cherries, raspberry jam and sugared strawberries. On the palate balanced and with juicy tannin, spicy bouquet, harmonious in the beginning and course. Falstaff

"This is a very cedary Chianti Classico, the wood showing prominently, but also showing beautiful dried rose petals and orange rind. Full-bodied with structured tannins and a chewy finish." James Suckling

"Aromas of exotic spice and black plum mingle with notes of wild herb and a whiff of oak. On the tight elegant palate, firm close-grained tannins support red cherry, pomegranate, chopped mint and star anise while bright acidity lends balance. It's still youthfully austere so give it time to fully develop." Wine Enthusiast

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva shows all the quality and pedigree of the year in its layered personality and overall nuance. Cedar, dried cherry, game licorice and tobacco convey the darker, gamier side of Sangiovese that is such a signature at Fèlsina. The 2016 finishes with terrific energy and bright acids that suggest it will enjoy a long life in the cellar, but readers should plan on giving it at least a few years in bottle." Vinous

"This red offers density and focus, creating an ideal frame for the cherry, strawberry, almond, leather and earth flavors. A firm backbone of tannins lends structure and the finish persists, leaving an accent of bitter almond." Wine Spectator

"Streamlined and elegant, this mid-weight red trots out notes of grilled herb and dark fruit nuances that segue to spice, tilled earth and savory tobacco, with great complexity. This 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardenga is still a bit closed and tight, but this beautiful wine boasts all the best qualities of this vintage. It shows elegance and power, two contrasting characteristics that only work well together in the world's most achieved expressions. The most satisfying aspect of this Riserva is the crisp acidity on the close that keeps the palate refreshed and ready for the next sip." Robert Parker

The Spumante Edition Millesimato 2012 - carefully matured in the Metodo Classico process - is juicy, floral and creamy and shows a nice acidity. It's a stuff dreams are made of. SUPERIORE.DE

"Fèlsina's 2012 Millesimato Metodo Classico Brut shows tight and tonic lines with a generous personality. Peach and stone fruit aromas are found at its core and the wine also offers delicate mineral tones and a pretty touch of baked bread. This was a warm vintage, and you get extra padding or textural definition as a result. The finish is silky, and both these sparkling wines from Fèlsina offer delicate perlage that is not too spicy or sharp." Robert Parker

    • "Colonia" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2013

“Colonia” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2013

Felsinas Chianti Classico Gran Selezione from Vigneto Colonia is a project of the Poggiali family that has lasted for three generations. The vineyard has reddish-brown soils, rich in magnesium and iron on boulders of limestone and limestone marl, quite different from all the other sites of Fèlsina. The wine is impressive dark ruby, smells expressive mineral and pure, with aromas of dark cherry and black currant. Pure elegance, refinement and harmony in just 3,000 numbered bottles for true Sangiovese lovers! SUPERIORE.DE

"Complex aromas of raspberries, blueberries, red plums and hot stones. Some new wood, too. Medium to full body, ripe and velvety tannins and a long very crisp finish. I like the intensity and the style here." James Suckling

"This wine opens to rich intensity and a dark purple-blackish color that is simply gorgeous to behold. The 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colonia is a superb expression that delivers so much joy on almost every measurable level. This vintage offers superb density and intensity with sharply defined aromas of black cherry, ripe blackberry, spice, leather and moist tobacco. There is a sweet note on the close that lasts for a minute or two before returning your taste buds to sophisticated and savory flavors. This is a gorgeous, gorgeous achievement." Robert Parker

"Volume, power and breadth are the signatures of the 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colonia. This is the first vintage in which Colonia falls in line with the rest of the Fèlsina range from a stylistic standpoint. Among other things, the use of French oak is much more measured than it was in Colonia's first vintages. Next to the flagship Rancia, Colonia is a sleeker, and perhaps a bit more polished, although it doesn't quite offer the same direct expression of Sangiovese." Antonio Galloni

"The Colonia vineyard boasts a very rocky galestro soil rich in magnesium and iron. Though planted in 1993, it wasn't made as a separate bottling until 2006, and less than 3,000 bottles are produced. It's aged mostly in used barriques , and the 2013 is a heady tangle of underbrush, incense, ripe cherry, mint and fragrant fennel. It's very polished but true to its origins; dense, savoury and mineral with layers of tactile, powdery tannins that will carry the wine for a couple of decades." Decanter

Fontalloro and Rancia are wine icons of Tuscany. The Gambero Rosso counts Fèlsina among the ten most successful Italian wineries. You can hardly achieve much more in the Italian wine scene.

It was 1966 when the major shipowner Domenico Poggiali from Ravenna purchased the abandoned estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga in the southernmost corner of the Chianti Classico region. At that time the Fattoria di Fèlsina did not even have 10 hectares of land. The few vines were only used to supply the farmsteads of the village with wine. However, the new owner recognized the quality of the hilly land, which was located from the foothills of the Chianti Classico area near Siena to the eastern flanks of the Ombrone valley not far from Montalcino in the Colli Senesi (Sienese Hills). Gradually he acquired about 500 hectares of land, of which today about 95 hectares are cultivated with wine. The rest are olive groves, agricultural land and woods.

At the beginning of the 1970s Poggiali also built underground cellars to withstand the high temperature fluctuations. Together with his son Giuseppe he built
the winery from scratch. In times when Italian viticulture and especially Chianti was going through its most difficult phase, this was more than brave. The whole family helped of course, including the daughter Gloria, who had married the professor of literature Giovanni Mazzocolin. And because he earned so little as a professor, he too was to work in the winery. Actually in sales. But the art-loving professor was more concerned with the quality of the wines. He met Franco Bernabei, an oenologist from the Veneto region who had studied in Conegliano, and implemented his suggestions. Reduction of yields, new education systems, later harvesting, riper grapes, more modern cellar technology - and a selection of different Sangiovese clones.

While half of Italy relied on Cabernet & Co, Fèlsina produced pure Sangiovese wines, Fontalloro and Rancia had their premiere in 1983 and were to make the Fattoria di Fèlsina world-famous. It was also decided in 1983 to produce wines as close to nature as possible in the future. More important to Mazzocolin than the level of the harvest yields was a high biodiversity in the vineyards in order to protect the cultivated areas from pests to a large extent.

Today the grandson of the founder, Giovanni Poggiali, manages the now newly built cellar and vineyards, but always remains true to the successful style. SUPERIORE.DE

"Fèlsina belongs to the cult labels of Tuscany. The pure wines, on the other hand, which want to know little about modern, short-lived fashions, shine with elegance and personality."Gambero Rosso
