Felsina's single-varietal Sangiovese wines have been produced on the south-eastern edge of the Chianti Classico since 1967. The vineyards face south-west on ventilated slopes between 320 and 420 metres above sea level on geologically heterogeneous soils of quartz-rich sandstone, calcareous Alberese and clay. After hand-picking in the first three weeks of October, temperature-controlled fermentation takes place between 28-30°C with intensive maceration in stainless steel tanks for 12-15 days. Ageing lasts twelve months, mainly in traditional Slavonian oak barrels of medium size, supplemented by a small proportion of used barriques.

In the sun-drenched hills of Castelnuovo Berardenga, where Fèlsina has been one of the undisputed stars of Chianti Classico since 1966, the Poggiali family is writing another story: that of a world-class Tuscan Chardonnay. I Sistri – named after the traditional rattling instruments of the ancient mystery cults – epitomises the experimental passion that led Fèlsina to plant French Chardonnay clones on the nearby Farnetella vineyard back in the early 1980s. Between the Ombrone river and the Poggiolo farm, various plots with different clones, rootstocks and soil formations produce the grapes that have formed the heart of I Sistri since 1987.

A Tuscan rarity of a special kind: Felsina's experimental Spumante from the unusual cuvée of 60% Sangiovese, 20% Pinot Nero and 20% Chardonnay. The grapes come from vineyards at an altitude of 300 metres in Castelnuovo Berardenga, characterised by mineral-rich soils on the southern edge of the Chianti Classico zone. After careful manual harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented at a controlled temperature. The assemblage is bottled in spring with the addition of sugar and yeasts for the Presa di Spuma. After 20-22 months of bottle fermentation, dégorgement and dosage follow, followed by at least three more months of bottle ageing.

“Berardenga” Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2021
In 1966, when the Italian wine world was at a crossroads, Domenico Poggiali took the bold step of acquiring the then neglected lands of Castelnuovo Berardenga. His son-in-law Giuseppe Mazzocolin, the humanist professor and friend of Luigi Veronelli, subsequently turned this adventure into a legend. Together with the young OenologistFranco Bernabei, they created the first Berardenga in 1967 – a Sangiovese that epitomises the true essence of south-eastern Chianti Classico. The vineyards extend over the geologically heterogeneous terraces between 320 and 420 metres above sea level, where quartz-rich sandstone and calcareous Alberese in the upper areas meet sandstone and clay towards the Crete Senesi. This "Terra di Confine" – the borderland between Chianti Classico and the Colli Senesi – characterises the unmistakable character.

When French noble vines were planted in the Tuscan soil of Felsina's Podere Molinuzzo in 1998, a visionary experiment of extraordinary boldness began. Pinot Nero in Tuscany? A seemingly impossible endeavour in a region dominated by Sangiovese. But Giuseppe Mazzocolin and Franco Bernabei, who had already initiated the Sangiovese revolution with the legendary Fontalloro, once again dared to do the impossible: to cultivate the Burgundian king grape variety under the Tuscan sun. The vineyard, which covers just 2.5 hectares, is strategically located on the border between Felsina and Castello di Farnetella, on soils of sand and clay with a significant stony and calcareous component. This geological peculiarity, combined with the cooler microzone of Podere Molinuzzo, creates ideal conditions for a grape variety that elsewhere in Italy only thrives in the foothills of the Alps.

Just like the famous I Sistri, the "Collezione Privata" is a single-varietal Chardonnay. Bright, intense straw yellow colour with golden reflections. Delicately reductive nose of spices, peach and exotic fruit with restrained hints of vanilla. Creamy and full-bodied on the palate, the ideally balanced acidity gives it structure and the fresh juice combined with a mineral-salty note carries this complex white wine into an exciting and spicy finish of quince and orange. The clearly recognisable Burgundian style of this great Chardonnay will continue to develop as it matures in the bottle, not least due to the subtle barrique ageing. This artisan grappa rarity from Felsina is made from the finest Sangiovese grape marc from the legendary Fontalloro. The fresh, carefully selected vinacce are distilled using traditional steam distillation in a discontinuous copper alambic (pot still) – a centuries-old art that allows the highest concentration while retaining elegance. After careful distillation, the grappa matures for years in oak barrels, using natural decantation without refrigeration or mechanical filtration. This patient ageing process respects the balances that develop during the long resting period in barrels – a sign of true mastery.

In the vineyards of Rancia Piccola and Poggiolo, where Benedictine monks once prayed and the legendary Rancia took its Sangiovese roots, Felsina ventured another visionary experiment in the mid-1980s. Here, on soils neighbouring and similar to the famous Rancia terroir, the most famous red wine grape variety was to find its Tuscan interpretation. The name Maestro Raro – rare master – honours both the rarity of Bordeaux Cabernet Sauvignon in this Sangiovese stronghold and the masterful mastery of the terroir. Since 1987, the first vintage, this 100 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon has developed from a standing start into one of the region's most impressive super-Tuscans.

“Colonia” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018
When you hear the story of the effort that went into the Colonia vineyard, you have to wonder if the fine people of Fèlsina are absolutely crazy. It took them two years to remove the imposing rock that had forced previous generations of the Poggiali family to virtually abandon this noble site. But it is thanks to the ambitious Giovanni Poggiali that this spectacular vineyard (Vigneto Colonia) became what it is today. It has reddish-brown soils, is rich in magnesium and iron, and is thus quite different from all other Fèlsina sites.

Fontalloro and Rancia are wine icons of Tuscany. The Gambero Rosso counts Fèlsina among the ten most successful Italian wineries. You can hardly achieve much more in the Italian wine scene.
It was 1966 when the major shipowner Domenico Poggiali from Ravenna purchased the abandoned estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga in the southernmost corner of the Chianti Classico region. At that time the Fattoria di Fèlsina did not even have 10 hectares of land. The few vines were only used to supply the farmsteads of the village with wine. However, the new owner recognized the quality of the hilly land, which was located from the foothills of the Chianti Classico area near Siena to the eastern flanks of the Ombrone valley not far from Montalcino in the Colli Senesi (Sienese Hills). Gradually he acquired about 500 hectares of land, of which today about 95 hectares are cultivated with wine. The rest are olive groves, agricultural land and woods.
At the beginning of the 1970s Poggiali also built underground cellars to withstand the high temperature fluctuations. Together with his son Giuseppe he built the winery from scratch. In times when Italian viticulture and especially Chianti was going through its most difficult phase, this was more than brave. The whole family helped of course, including the daughter Gloria, who had married the professor of literature Giovanni Mazzocolin. And because he earned so little as a professor, he too was to work in the winery. Actually in sales. But the art-loving professor was more concerned with the quality of the wines. He met Franco Bernabei, an oenologist from the Veneto region who had studied in Conegliano, and implemented his suggestions. Reduction of yields, new education systems, later harvesting, riper grapes, more modern cellar technology - and a selection of different Sangiovese clones.
While half of Italy relied on Cabernet & Co, Fèlsina produced pure Sangiovese wines, Fontalloro and Rancia had their premiere in 1983 and were to make the Fattoria di Fèlsina world-famous. It was also decided in 1983 to produce wines as close to nature as possible in the future. More important to Mazzocolin than the level of the harvest yields was a high biodiversity in the vineyards in order to protect the cultivated areas from pests to a large extent.
Today the grandson of the founder, Giovanni Poggiali, manages the now newly built cellar and vineyards, but always remains true to the successful style. SUPERIORE.DE
"Fèlsina belongs to the cult labels of Tuscany. The pure wines, on the other hand, which want to know little about modern, short-lived fashions, shine with elegance and personality."Gambero Rosso
