A name with history: Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, the bold 15th century general, once lived on this estate – piero della Francesca immortalised him in a portrait that now hangs in the Louvre. After the devastation of the wars, the Ricci family began to rebuild the estate in the 1950s; the entire vineyard has been certified organic since 2021. Battista comes from vineyards at an altitude of 150 metres, characterised by brown, calcareous clay soils. The grapes are pressed immediately after the harvest to maximise freshness. Fermentation and ageing take place in stainless steel and three months on the fine lees give the wine a subtle fullness without heaviness.

Fiumana di Predappio – sangiovese has had its home here since the Middle Ages. The estate's lowest vineyards between 80 and 150 metres provide the grapes for the Federico, named after the family's long-time employee. Fermentation and nine months of ageing take place 70% in stainless steel and 30% in oak wood – enough structure without masking the fruit. Bright ruby red colour. The nose literally leaps out of the glass: fresh cherries, raspberries, a hint of herbs and violets. Lean and juicy on the palate, with fine tannins that invite you to take another sip. A charming Sangiovese that does not make you ponder, but is a pleasure to drink – uncomplicated in the best sense of the word, certified organic and exactly what an everyday wine should be. Pecorino? You know it as sheep's milk cheese! Here in the Marche region, pecorino is above all an indigenous grape variety with a centuries-old tradition on the slopes of the Piceno Apennines. And what Saladini Pilastri makes from it is beautiful – organically vinified and with the character that makes this underrated region so special. The Saladini Pilastri organic winery cultivates four hectares of Pecorino vines in the municipalities of Spinetoli and Monteprandone, 150 metres above sea level. Here, on alluvial soils rich in gravel, they grow in an east-north-east orientation – perfect for the natural acidity and minerality that characterise this variety. 4,200 vines per hectare in the Guyot system, hand-picked in the first week of September when the grapes have reached their optimum balance.

Organic wine from Italy.
Actually, there is no such thing as organic wine. It's wine made from grapes from organic farming. But it sounds too complicated. That's why everyone calls it organic wine. And if you're ever in the countryside, you can see the difference immediately. There are vineyards where the soil between the rows is brown. Well, sure, soil - you say now. True, but have you ever thought about why no weeds or blades of grass grow there?
And then there are vineyards that look like freshly combed greenery. Between the rows, greenery, flowers, herbs grow half a metre high. Well, because it is simply not sprayed to death. On the contrary, organic winegrowers sow their own mixtures of useful plants between the rows. This also helps with the moisture balance in the vineyard. And at the end of the year it is harvested - and thus becomes fertiliser again.
