      Chianti Classico DOCG 2019 (BIO)

Medium, radiant ruby red. The bouquet and taste are dominated by interesting notes of fresh cut flowers, sweet red berries, liquorice, mint, pine and cedar. As it progresses, the Chianti Classico shows a wonderful precision and sharpness, which is enveloped by a well-dosed extract sweetness. In the overall impression, its grace and open-hearted style is convincing with all its components and not least with its Radda-typical Sangiovese freshness. SUPERIORE.DE

"Located in the township of Radda, Volpaia's southeast- to southwest-facing vineyards reach 600 metres above sea level. The annata is crafted from diverse parcels planted between 1972 and 2004. Still subtle in its expression, this takes some time to open up, then reveals decisive fennel, red plum, white pepper and lavender. Velvety fruit is ripe yet crunchy, punctuated by herbal notes, while the discreet powdery tannins are youthful and grapey in natural. Modest yet delicious." Decanter

"Juicy cherry, strawberry and currant fruit abounds, along with a savory side sporting thyme, juniper and earth notes. It finishes with dusty tannins." Wine Spectator

"The 2019 Chianti Classico is an attractive, mid-weight wine. Silky and beautifully perfumed, this mid-weight Chianti Classico is a terrific example of the lithe style that is so typical of Radda. Crushed flowers, mint, sweet red berries and tobacco linger." Vinous

    • Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2018 (BIO)

Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2018 (BIO)

Chianti Classico Riserva Castello di Volpaia is a dark, powerful wine. Black cherry, smoke, liquorice, incense, mocha, menthol, lavender and leather give this virile, brooding Riserva plenty of character. On the palate, it is very aromatic with sweet red cherries, cedar and nuances of blood orange, yet very powerful and multi-layered with a terrificdepth and structure. A dream for Sangiovese lovers. SUPERIORE.DE

"Youthful crimson. Ripe cherry fruit with a hint of suave oak and bell pepper. Rich sour-cherry fruit with lots of acidity and finely grained but firm tannins. Very long and with animating, some would say tart, acidity, and still in need of further bottle ageing." Jancis Robinson

"Marked by ripe, fresh black cherry and black currant fruit, this red is fleshy and bright, with eucalyptus, tobacco and earth accents adding detail as this winds down on the solidly built finish." Wine Spectator

"Produced since 1967, Volpaia's Riserva is a selection of bunches from throughout the estate's 43 hectares in the township of Radda. Due to the slow start in 2018, harvest began a few days later than average, taking place during the first two weeks of October. With purity and precision, strawberry, tobacco, vanilla and forest earth emerge from the glass. This is well-proportioned and balanced in ripeness with a core of concentrated red cherry. Fresh acidity props it up and smooth, rounded tannins frame the whole." Decanter

"The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva is fabulous. There are more 'important' wines in the range, but the Riserva delivers superb quality for the money. Succulent dark cherry, plum, mocha, spice and cloves show a darker side of Sangiovese that is quite attractive. Ample and virile in feel, the 2018 has the stuffing to develop well for many years to come." Vinous

    • "Coltassala" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017 (BIO)

“Coltassala” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017 (BIO)

Coltassala Gran Selezione is an impeccable representative of the royal class in Chianti Classico. The immensely fragrant bouquet shows black fruits, spices and ploughed earth. All the aromas are on the dark and spicy side, but the wine always remains fresh, dense, buoyant and very linear. Shows rich volume and a strong personality and precision. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, rich ruby. Finely marked nose with notes of cherry, raspberry and cloves. Appealing play between juicy fruit and grippy tannin, long after cherries." Falstaff

"Lustrous ruby. Iron, tar and cherry with hints of cardamom. Generous, yet with a medium-bodied weight. Concentrated, tangy, dark fruit with polished tannins. Far from ready." Jancis Robinson

"A complex version, this red sports plum, blackberry, leather, earth, camphor and eucalyptus aromas and flavors. Though vivid and incisive with its core of fruit, dusty tannins grip the finish, where an oak spice element lingers. Be patient, here." Wine Spectator

"The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Coltassala is striking. Rich and ample, with tremendous depth, the 2017 shows all of the mystique that makes Sangiovese so alluring. Sweet dark cherry, dark plum, leather, licorice, menthol and tobacco build as the 2017 shows off its breadth and personality. The Coltassala has a bit more volume and oak influence than the other Volpaia wines, but it's an approach that works so well here." Vinous

"A real beauty, the 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Coltassala (made with organic fruit) shows medium-rich textural fiber with plenty of dark fruit, cherry, spice and leather. The important thing to mention here is how light and elegantly fragrant this wine remains despite the considerable heat and dryness of the growing season. In fact, all those fruit tones emerge with terrific purity and focus, backed by acidity and integrated structure, that invite an evening-long sampling with some medium-aged pecorino." Robert Parker

"Transparent and linear with currant and cherry aromas and flavors. It's beautifully fine and bright with crushed cherries and berries and hints of strawberries. Pine needles and fresh herbs, too. Very silky tannins and a palate that shows poise and polish." James Suckling

    • "Il Puro" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2016 (BIO) <br>0,75l in OWC

“Il Puro” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2016 (BIO) · 0,75l in OWC

Volpaia's flagship Il Puro shows beautiful fruit, elegance and a certain austerity that are indicative of this balanced vintage. The texture of the wine is dense and voluptuous and there is dark, plummy fruit, leather and cloves that meld into a wonderful drinking flow. Oak spice, tar and campfire ash on the long and rich finish. Only 2,000 bottles exist of this profound archetype of a Sangiovese that could hardly be better. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, intense ruby. Compact nose with notes of ripe dark cherries and wild raspberries, discreet resinous notes in the background. Polished and fine on the palate, shows lots of juicy fruit, opens with fine-meshed tannin in many layers, very long finish." Falstaff

"Mid garnet. Densely savoury, 'agricultural' Sangiovese notes on the nose and just the right amount of fruit concentration (not skinny but not forced). Excellent acidity and very true to the variety. Bone-dry finish. Quintessential food wine. Not flashy. Well named." Jancis Robinson

"Puro refers not just to the fact that this is made from 100% Sangiovese, but also that the vines represent 25 clones native to the area of Volpaia. They are grown in a small plot of the estate's south facing Casanova vineyard. Aged in 100% new French barriques, this leads with freshly ground coffee and sandalwood then reveals licorice, lavender and red cherry. The palate is sophisticated and smooth with fine svelte tannins and a racy core." Decanter

"The Volpaia 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Casanova Il Puro is profound, mature and ready to drink. It is made with organic fruit and packaged with lengths of twine that are affixed to the front of the bottle with an elegant red wax seal. From a classic vintage, this wine opens to evolved and spicy aromas of dried fruit, prune, leather and dark licorice root. The presentation is more oxidative that I would expect for a 2016, but yet the wine is open and ready to drink. I see little need to hold out for longer aging." Robert Parker

"A rich, layered red that shows the strength of the vintage, offering blackberry, black-olive and stone aromas and flavors. It's full-bodied, chewy and pretty." James Suckling

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Casanova Il Puro is a wine for the cellar. Bright acids and beams of tannin shape this powerful, classically austere Gran Selezione from Volpaia. Lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and cloves start to emerge with some coaxing, but the 2016 is very clearly not ready to show all its cards just yet. Even so, this is a fine edition of the Puro." Vinous

"Dense and firmly structured, this red is saturated with black cherry, black currant, mineral, spice, tar and tobacco flavors. Though balanced, with refined tannins and lively acidity, the fruit is muted now and seems to be shutting down. Fine length shows the potential, but be patient." Wine Spectator

    Castello di Volpaia

North of the town of Radda you will find the highest vines in the entire Chianti Classico region, almost all of which belong to the picture-book winery Castello di Volpaia. This once walled and hilltop medieval village is one of the best preserved of its time and is a historic founding member of the "Lega del Chianti", Volpaia's winemaking tradition dates back to 1172.

The traditions and values of aristocratic country life have been preserved here since the early 1970s by the admirable Giovanna Stianti and her family. Most of the winery's employees now live within the village walls that still partially surround the fortress and which the family, originally from Florence, restored for this purpose.

The winery comprises 45 hectares of vineyards that climb steeply up to the impressive village. The fact that the skeletal subsoil found there is very different from the soils in the rest of the Chianti Classico region is expressed in the elegant wines. A lower clay content and the obviously higher proportion of sand and sandstone make for far less rustic but very finely structured Sangiovese wines.

Giovanna and her husband Carlo Mascheroni, who died in 2017, were the first to make use of modern techniques such as temperature-controlled fermentation within Chianti Classicos. Thanks to their pioneering spirit, which remains unbroken to this day, the wine cellar of Castello di Volpaia continues to be equipped with the most innovative winemaking technologies every five years.

The resulting fine wines reflect the character of the enchanting place and of Sangioveto - the local clone of Sangiovese. They correspond to the refined style of the so-called "Alto Chianti" wines, which is partly due to this special clone selection. The vines here are partly cultivated on steep slopes at a dizzying 450 to 650 metres above sea level using organic farming methods.

The Stianti-Mascheroni family has always been committed to sustainable and environmentally friendly cultivation, where no pesticides or synthetic chemicals are used. For this reason, it is said almost succinctly from the winery that the official conversion to organic viticulture in 2000 was mainly a matter of bureaucracy.

The wines show a very appealing interplay of acidity, tannin and alcohol, which they achieve thanks to the expert hands of the talented oenologist Lorenzo Regoli and the support of the "flying winemaker" Riccardo Cotarella. From the young Chianti Classico to the Riserva wines aged in large wood and the sophisticated Gran Selezione: the wines from Castello di Volpaia are clearly among the best in the region. SUPERIORE.DE
