Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018
Bright ruby red with a light rim. Equally bright and very complex bouquet of wild berries, strawberries, dried fruits, tar and balsamic herbs. On the palate, a very attractive, supple texture, again a beautiful red berry fruit in the drink, plus traces of blackcurrant, blueberry and liquorice. In the long, squeaky clean finish, traces of well-integrated light wood and a very appealing silkiness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium to deep ruby red with orange highlights. Brooding but ripe on the nose. Lots of juicy cherry fruit and crisp tannins. A blockbuster, but a finely balanced one." Jancis Robinson
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is rich and haunting dark, with masses of cherry and raspberry sauce giving way to sweet violet flowers. The palate is velvety, with balsamic spice and red and black fruits lifted by cool acidity. It leaves a hint of primary concentration balanced by a touch of sour citrus, and finishes with smooth tannins and a strong power. There's a lot going on here, and it has the ability to age over the medium term." Vinous
"Aromas of fresh raspberries, sour cherries, lemons, walnuts and vanilla beans. It is juicy and flavourful with a medium body and creamy tannins. The tangy fruit transitions into creamy chocolate. Wonderfully drinkable." James Suckling
"A juicy style for the vintage, with aromas of cherries, raspberries, flowers, graphite and spices. Balanced and lively, with bright acidity and refined tannins for support. Shows lovely length." Wine Spectator
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino shows dark fruit and oak spice and tends towards the more powerful and voluminous side of the Brunello spectrum. The wine is open-knit and approachable. On the finish, it shows a softer side with polished tannins." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino “La Pieve” DOCG 2018
Clear, relatively cool, polished and deep nose with fine berry tones, a little dry herbs, pepper, hints of tobacco, ash and floral nuances. Taut, tart, fresh and precise fruit with noticeable acidity and present, fine tannins. Dense and persistent on the palate, smoky traces, some dried herbs, salt in the background, very good depth. For all its power, elegant style with a hint of bitter chocolate, very good, taut, tangy finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"This wine has aromas of cherry pits, plums, nutmeg, cedar and some balsamic. It is full-bodied with tangy acidity and spicy, fleshy layers of fruit accompanied by sinewy tannins. A little linear. Powerful finish." James Suckling
"The La Gerla 2018 Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve also shows a thicker and more concentrated side, similar to the Brunello annata. I would argue that this density even goes a step further, with more texture and weight perceived on the palate. This powerful, full-bodied approach is accompanied by ripe cherries, blackberries, smoked spices and leather. There is a hint of sour fruit on the finish." Wine Advocate
"Deep and savoury, this red shows aromas of black cherry, blackberry, eucalyptus, rosemary, iron and earth. With assertive tannins, this finishes with a chewy, compact feel." Wine Spectator
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve exudes ripe strawberry and blueberry fruit in the glass, accompanied by crushed stone and violet pastilles. It is silky-soft and supple, with a depth of ripe red and black berries supported by a core of vibrant acidity. The final is of great depth and length, along with classic tannins that slowly fade lavender-scented plums and a hint of cocoa. The 2018 La Pieve is a real charmer." Vinous
"Raw material of great crispness for this new jewel, result of Sergio Rossi's vision. Notes of red plums on the nose, hints of undergrowth and wild mint, rhubarb on the finish. The mouthfeel is juicy and taut, with succulent tannins, mentholated notes return on the finish." Luca Gardini

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna gli Angeli” Riserva DOCG 2012 · MAGNUM in OWC
Deep ruby red, on the nose aromas of red berries, cedar wood and some lime zest. Strong, firm body, straight tannins and a subtle acidity, which promise him balance, elegant structure and a long life. SUPERIORE.DE
"Intense, sparkling garnet red. Very appealing, open nose, of cranberries, blackberries and ripe cherries, graceful play, slightly resinous notes in the background. On the palate supple at the beginning, shows beautifully ripened berry fruit, some tobacco, substantial tannin, in the final beautiful play between ripe fruit and sweet melt. Falstaff
"Striking autumnal sous bois type character here. This is a remarkably suave and supple Brunello Riserva that stands out in the crowd in spite of the classic red fruit character. A silky long finish." James Suckling
"Pipe tobacco, blue flower, plum and dark culinary spice are some of the aromas you'll find on this full-bodied red. The aromas carry over to the firmly structured palate along with dried cherry, orange zest and star anise. Firm fine-grained tannins provide the backbone." Wine Enthusiast
"Here is a dense and meaty Tusan red that flaunts its immediate power, structure and intensity. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli is robust and deep thanks to a generous offering of dark fruit, spice and tar-like aromas. Fruit is carefully selected for this wine, and the grapes are fermented in stainless steel. Post fermentation, the wine goes into large Slavonian oak casks for four years. The finish is soft and supple with sweet berry flavors. This wine has made an impressive jump forward in this vintage." Wine Advocate
"Bright red. Pure and very flinty nuances complement aromas and flavors of strawberry-rhubarb and wild berries on the nose and palate. Dense and juicy and boasting a focused, penetrating mouthfeel, this finishes long and clean with a very strong note of licorice. Best classico Brunello from La Gerla in some time." Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna gli Angeli” Riserva DOCG 2015 · MAGNUM in OWC
Here comes the archetype of the perfectly balanced 2015 vintage in Montalcino: seductive scent of wild berries, mint, orange peel and undergrowth. Fleshy in the drink with a firm, well-proportioned core, fantastically fresh and integrated acid wire, the fruit carpet rolls out full of cherries and small red berries in the glass. These impressive primary aromas are skilfully surrounded by notes of cedar, tobacco and sweet herbs, sip by sip the whole drama of this exceptional wine becomes more and more present and inevitably casts its spell. May the bottle never be empty - and may the discipline be there to hold back a few bottles of this exceptional wine to enjoy it in the coming years on its way to full bloom! SUPERIORE.DE
"Shiny, rich ruby with garnet rim. Very finely marked nose, of plums and cranberries, slightly resinous components, some cardamom. Ripe, juicy fruit on the palate, lots of cherry, opens up with fine-meshed tannin, sturdy and long." Falstaff
"The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gli Angeli is drop-dead gorgeous, as it keeps you coming back to the glass over and over to take in its alluring display of rich dark fruits with sweet mint, mulling spice and a grounding hint of flowery undergrowth. Its textures are seamless, coasting across a core of vibrant acids, which enliven its flavors of black cherry and currants. You can almost forget how youthful the 2015 is today, as it comes across as juicy at times. That said, there's plenty of structure here to carry it for many years in the cellar. Notes of licorice, tobacco and sweet herbs linger long over a gentle coating of fine tannin. This may be dangerously delicious today; yet after just a few years of cellaring, I expect the Riserva Gli Angeli to fully blossom and provide a long and open drinking window." Vinous
"New leather, forest floor and ripe woodland-berry aromas make their way to the forefront together with whiffs of violet and pipe tobacco. Full bodied and firmly structured, the palate offers finesse and concentrated flavors including crushed raspberry, morello cherry, licorice and truffle framed in tightly knit, polished tannins." Wine Enthusiast
"The La Gerla 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli is a softly textured and fleshed out wine that shows darker and deeper fruit (compared to the 2016 Brunello that I tasted at the same time). This wine makes a great first impression, mostly thanks to that sense of quiet balance. As it opens in the glass, I notice the pretty ripeness of the vintage with dark cherry and summer plum. In all, this Riserva gives us an accessible and rich expression that will perform nicely upon release." Wine Advocate
"Rich and round, here is a red full of macerated plum and cherry flavors, with almond, leather, spice and earth accents. Firms up on the finish, where the vibrant fruit echoes." Wine Spectator
"Sweet berries and cherries with flowers, orange peel and hints of leaves. Sandalwood and meat, too. It's full-bodied with chewy tannins that are polished and beautiful. Great finish. This is really impressive at the end. Best ever? So gorgeous now, but will be even more impressive in two or three years." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna gli Angeli” Riserva DOCG 2016 · MAGNUM in OWC
Great Riserva from a great vintage! Seductive scent of wild berries, mint, orange peel and undergrowth. Fleshy in the drink with a firm, well-proportioned core, fantastically fresh and integrated acid wire, the fruit carpet rolls out full of cherries and small red berries in the glass. These impressive primary aromas are skilfully surrounded by notes of cedar, tobacco and sweet herbs. "Sparkling, medium dense ruby garnet. Opens with notes of mocha, plus ripe dark cherries, some cranberry. On the palate ripe plum, plus fine clove and some cinnamon, shows polished tannin." Falstaff
"A hint of bacon and brooding richness, as if the fruit is in a straitjacket. Creamy fruit that suggests lots of new oak has come into play. The oak is a little obvious but the fruit is pure and juicy with a fantastic tannic structure. Very long and concentrated and juicy, while the gripping tannins add tactile fireworks." Jancis Robinson
"This densely woven red wine shows notes of milk chocolate and spicy oak wrapped in cherry and redcurrant fruit. It's a little quieter on the finish now, but still has vibrant fruit and length." Wine Spectator
"The La Gerla 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli is polished and tightly woven with plenty of silky sheen inside. The fruit shows good primary intensity with dried cherry and cassis, but this Riserva also harbours some tertiary or aged aromas of spice, leather and tar. Earthy tones, cola and wild roses blend into this fresh and elegant Sangiovese. There are some smoky oak tones that are a little aggressive at first, but they largely subside." Wine Advocate
"Inviting aromas of wild berries, baking spice, new leather and charcuterie come to the forefront. Full-bodied and elegantly structured, the smooth palate features dried cherry, baked plum, vanilla and mocha framed in fine-grained tannins." Wine Enthusiast
"Perfumed with cherries, berries and flowers. Medium-bodied with ripe fruit on the palate and undertones of pralines, nuts and nougat. Rich and delicious, yet it remains intense and concentrated. Spicy on the finish. Drinkable now, but even better from 2025." James Suckling
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gli Angeli glows with remarkable depth, revealing a blend of spicy citrus peel and minty herbs that give way to an abundance of black cherries, strawberries, hints of iodine and smoke. The texture of this wine is exciting, feeling velvety and almost heavy as it strikes a wonderful balance between its vibrant acidity, tart wild berries and savoury spices that unleash on the palate. Hints of mocha combine with sour cherry and almond jam on the impressively long and classically structured final. Ultimately, the 2016 Gli Angeli is the total package. This Riserva is a single vineyard bottling from the northern vineyard of La Gerla in Montalcino, planted by Biondi-Santi in 1968." Vinous

On the gentle slopes below the wine village of Montalcino, Sergio Rossi has lovingly grown his vines for almost forty years. The former director of an advertising agency and owner of the small winery La Gerla has managed to quickly establish his company as a recognized Brunello producer in the wine world. Rossi skillfully combines state-of-the-art cellar technology with the wisdom of a down-to-earth winemaker. Before he took it over and restructured it in 1976, the property at 320 meters above sea level and covering a good 28 hectares belonged to the company with the distinctive name "Colombaia" (too German: "dovecote") of the Biondi Santi family, who are known for their best Brunelli.
In the small cellar there are about twelve hectares with vines. The vineyards are located at Canalicchio in the northeast and at Castelnuovo dell'Abate in the southeast. In his daily work Rossi is supported by a top-class team. The oenologist Vittorio Fiore, for example, has been a friend from the very beginning. Alberto Passeri is an agronomist who supervises the vineyards and also acts as the director of the estate. The wines produced in La Gerla are not only regularly awarded prizes by the relevant wine guides and trade journals, but are also highly esteemed in wine shops and restaurants.
The Tuscan farm has three wine cellars, two of which are intended for the ageing of the noble plants. The main underground cellar with optimal conditions for temperature and humidity is located in an impressive 15th century tower. It contains, among other things, the most precious bottles of the first vintage 1978 and houses the wine library. A new cellar, partly underground, contains large oak barrels of 50 and 100 hectolitres (hl) volume. There the Supertoscan Birba ages in about 50 barriques (Allier and Vosges). In the modern, temperature-controlled cellar, which is reserved for winemaking, there are stainless steel tanks with a capacity of 1,700 hectolitres. The storage, labelling and filling areas are located in the immediate vicinity. SUPERIORE.DE
