Great purity of raspberry and cherry fruit on the palate, carried by supple acidity and laced with bitter-sweet, grainy tannins. Very long with savoury spice notes on the finish." Jancis Robinson
"Sleek and focused, with blackberry, boysenberry and pomegranate flavors that are intense from beginning to end. Balanced and bracing." Wine Spectator

"Deep dark cherries on the nose with some dried meat, dark spices and geranium leading into a silky palate of dark sour cherries. Lively, juicy and polished." James Suckling
"The 2020 Nizza Montemareto is packed with wild dark cherries, rose petals, cherry, game, smoke, tobacco and incense. Deep and structured, the 2020 has a lot to offer. A year in the barrel is good to tame some of its natural wildness." Vinous

Ruby red with violet reflections. Intense notes of sour cherry, wild berries, chocolate, undergrowth and coffee on the nose. Velvety, structured, full and rich on the palate of dark spices, candied cherries and cocoa, finishes juicy and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Michele Chiarlo 2017 Nizza Riserva La Court is a beautifully enriched and generous wine that adds ample volume and depth to the Barbera grape. This kitchen-friendly option shows the dark fruit (blackberry and plum) that goes well with most pasta or meat dishes. It also offers just enough acidity to get through any recipe with lots of cheese or cream." Wine Advocate
"Aromas of dark fruit, cedar and scorched earth lead the nose. The structured, balanced palate offers Marasca cherry, blackberry jam and liquorice alongside polished tannins." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2017 Nice LaCourt is soft, supple, rich and open, but not at all heavy. Raspberry jam, mocha, spices, new leather - all build as this juicy Nice unfolds its considerable appeal. The 2017 hits just the right notes. It's a great effort from the Chiarlo family." Vinous
"Forest floor and farmyard on the nose, lots of dark fruit and wild herbs on the palate. Good intensity and freshness with a touch of volatile acidity, not in a negative sense, which gives the wine personality." Decanter

It combines the complexity and nuances of the Nebbiolo grape with a fruit-driven and engaging personality. The aromatic bouquet shows hints of sweetness and richness with a potpourri of blackberries, summer cherries and spices. On the palate it is powerful and immediate, the tannins are clear and tangible. Will continue to develop towards perfection, elegance and finesse over the next few years. SUPERIORE.DE

Barbaresco Asili DOCG 2020
Michele Chiarlo's Barbaresco Asili comes from vines that are about 30 years old and has a fragrant bouquet with bright and fresh aromas of wild cherry, blackcurrant, raspberry, blue flowers and gravel. This vintage shows a level of energy and vitality that makes it stand out from the crowd, and the wine is elegant and silky in texture. This is a particularly soft and polished expression of the famous Asili vineyard in Barbaresco. SUPERIORE.DE
"It is very fresh and racy with red and blue berries, crushed violets, lavender and walnuts. It is medium-bodied, structured and fleshy with solid tannins that are ripe and velvety, yet give the wine a firm backbone. The fruit is vibrant and pronounced with lots of floral and spicy notes." James Suckling
"From one of the appellation's best-known growing sites, the Michele Chiarlo 2020 Barbaresco Asili offers more savory spice and depth next to the Barbaresco Faset. There is a touch more power and muscle in this expression, and these two wines complement each other nicely, with the Faset showing more primary fruit and the Asili showing more texture." Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2019
Cannubi's loose, sandy soils always make for a special concentration of flavours, and this is particularly observable in this classic vintage. Clean bouquet of small red berries, violets and dried rose petals. In the multi-layered drink, a fine mineral note, a pinch of salt and lots of fruit and a clearly contoured tannin framework. A beautifully straight wine, powerful and elegant. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2019 Barolo Cannubi has notes of cherry brandy, cedar, dried leaves, mint and leather. There is a good bit of complexity here too, but these are the aromas and flavours I would expect from a slightly older wine. Sweet floral and spicy notes linger." Vinous
"The Michele Chiarlo 2019 Barolo Cannubi is a fleshed-out expression of Nebbiolo with a medium build and good structure. There is a dusty mineral tone on the bouquet that transitions to crushed rose, cassis, blood orange and violet. Enjoying excellent exposures on steep slopes, Cannubi is always a classic wine, but it is especially so in this balanced vintage." Wine Advocate
"A vineyard in the historic heart of Italy's oldest cru, rehabilitated with great agronomic skill. Notes of dogwood on the nose, then liquorice, a hint of humus and a slightly smoky finish. Spicy tannins on the palate, crisp and again with fruit and undergrowth notes." Luca Gardini

The founder of the winery, Michele Chiarlo, completed his oenology studies in Alba in 1955, which his father Pietro only allowed him to do on one condition: "I had to promise my father that I would pass every exam," the winemaker recalled with a grin in an earlier conversation. But thanks to his talent, he was soon at the top of his class and studied with the future protagonists of the Italian wine world, including Giacomo Tachis, the creator of the legendary Supertuscan Sassicaia.
After graduating, the ambitious Michele began to put his plans into practice. He planted his first vineyards between the hills of the Langhe and Monferrato and produced his first Barolo at the end of the 1950s. Thanks to his negotiating skills and his persistent pursuit of quality, he even acquired some of the best vineyards in Piedmont for his production of Barolo, Barbaresco and Barbera d'Asti in the following years.
It is not only since the death of Michele Chiarlo (†2023) that the founder's two sons have been responsible for the excellent qualities of the company. Alberto and Stefano, who took over a large part of the company's responsibilities back in the 1990s, are fortunate to have shared a long and eventful life with their father and are continuing the legacy of the "father of Barbera d'Asti and Moscato" with great passion. Michele's legacy is therefore in the best of hands.
The winery has a particular fondness for indigenous grape varieties - above all the Barbera grape, which used to be greatly underestimated by many producers. Before Michele experimented with this unique grape variety, Barbera was primarily known as a rustic table wine. Chiarlo drew inspiration for a finer style of wine from Burgundy and pressed his first fruity and velvety Barbera in 1974 with the help of malolactic fermentation. Enthusiastic work and the pursuit of excellence earned the grape variety the title "Queen of Piedmontese wines" and today the winery produces a range of outstanding Barbera d'Asti.
The quality level of the top category Nizza DOCG is comparable to that of Barbaresco and Barolo, which are regularly honoured by the trade press. Michele Chiarlo also produces wonderfully fruity white wines such as Gavi di Gavi and Roero Arneis as well as fruity, sparkling Moscato d'Asti with a wonderfully balanced residual sweetness.
From sustainable work in the vineyard to a CO₂-friendly supply chain, the winery is a flagship for the region. We are certain that the next generation will ensure that the Michele Chiarlo winery remains one of the best in Piedmont. SUPERIORE.DE
