Lagrein Rosé Alto Adige DOC 2025
The autochthonous Lagrein grape grows in the middle hills between 250 and 400 metres, where clay meets calcareous inclusions, to produce one of the most characterful rosés in South Tyrol. The traditional Tramin winery, founded in 1898 by the visionary priest Christian Schrott, preserves a centuries-old South Tyrolean tradition with its Lagrein Kretzer. Pink to light ruby red in colour, the wine shimmers in the glass and develops a delicate, pleasantly fruity bouquet. The extreme interplay between sunny, Mediterranean-influenced days and cold down winds from the mountains gives it that lively freshness that is stimulating and invigorating on the palate. A classic South Tyrolean rosé with an authentic character. SUPERIORE.DE

Lagrein Alto Adige DOC 2025
Autochthonous power from the heart of South Tyrol – lagrein embodies the soul of the Bolzano valley floor like no other grape variety. In Gries and the surrounding slopes, the vines thrive on warm, sandy alluvial soils, where extreme temperature fluctuations between day and night create the complexity that characterises this classic. Intense ruby red colour with violet reflections. Ripe cherries and blackberries on the nose, framed by floral notes of violets and lilacs, while the typical cocoa flavour reveals its origins. The palate reveals the full structure of the grape variety: intense and persistent, with well-integrated tannins and that elegant spiciness that makes Lagrein unmistakable. An authentic ambassador of South Tyrolean wine culture. SUPERIORE.DE

Lagrein Alto Adige DOC 2024
South Tyrol's very own red wine variety, vinified by a master of his trade. Peter Zemmer cultivates his Lagrein on the warm clay soils of the municipality of Auer in the South Tyrolean lowlands – where the indigenous grape variety has been at home for centuries. The outstanding location and careful cultivation of the vineyards create ideal conditions for grapes of particular concentration. After fermentation, the must is kept in contact with the skins through regular pumping over and gentle crushing, which ensures optimum colour yield and accentuated fruitiness. 70% of the wine is then matured in large oak barrels, the remaining 30% in two- to three-year-old barriques. Further bottle ageing follows the assemblage.

Lagrein Rosé Alto Adige DOC 2025
Kretzer – this is what the rosé from Lagrein has been called in South Tyrol for centuries. The name sounds more determined than Rosato, and it is: Lagrein is one of the most independent grape varieties in the country, almost exclusively at home in South Tyrol, with an aroma that no other rosé grape displays in the same way. Wild berries, violets, a hint of dark spice – and the freshness that comes from vinification as a rosé. Martin Foradori aptly describes this wine as a character type between two worlds: "the freshness and fragrance of a white wine, the fruity juiciness and delicate spiciness of a red that can be drunk young".

Lagrein Alto Adige DOC 2025
Lagrein is the quintessential red wine of South Tyrol. This grape variety is grown in any significant quantity almost nowhere else in the world – it is so intrinsically linked to this region that its name still evokes the Adige Valley to this day. Kellerei Tramin sources its Lagrein from Auer, the warmest part of the growing region, where the Ora breezes from Lake Garda sweep through the valley every day and the vines reach full maturity in a climate that Lagrein clearly thrives in. The winery was founded in 1898 by the parish priest of Termeno. Since then, it has remained true to its commitment to getting the very best out of every vineyard – from the highest Gewürztraminer plots to the warm Lagrein vineyards on the valley floor in Auer.

Lagrein Alto Adige DOC 2024
The history of Lagrein cultivation in Alto Adige dates back to the 14th century. The Lagrein from St. Michael-Eppan is a characterful representative of its grape variety - powerful, but well-managed, with regional typicity and a clear profile. Grown on brooding, sandy-loamy soils in the Bolzano and Appiano area, the wine shows what South Tyrol's indigenous red wine variety can achieve in good hands. The 2024 vintage brought a balanced ripeness that allowed for freshness and depth in equal measure. After the classic mash fermentation, the wine matured for several months in large wooden barrels, which lends structure without overpowering the fruit.

Lagrein Rosé Alto Adige DOC 2025
The "Kretzer" is South Tyrol's most traditional rosé. It is produced on calcareous clay soils between 260 and 380 metres above sea level from the autochthonous king grape variety par excellence. The name Kretzer comes from the medieval vinification process – the "Kretze", a woven wicker basket, was once used to separate must and berry skins. This historic rosé wine tradition is continued today using state-of-the-art cellar technology: The Lagrein grapes undergo traditional rosé vinification at a controlled temperature in stainless steel, where brief contact with the skins gives the wine its characteristic salmon red colour.

A more than respectable performance for a so-called basic Lagrein: minty freshness, accentuated by floral notes and a hint of white pepper. The 2022 Lagrein still seems a little hesitant to show its full potential today, but the first sip already reveals a deep, silky texture. This is matched by a crisp red and black fruit flavour, driven by juicy acidity and plenty of pressure. Very impressive and with potential! SUPERIORE.DE

Lagrein Alto Adige DOC 2023
Documented since 1370, Lagrein epitomises authentic South Tyrol like no other grape variety. This autochthonous variety, related to Syrah and resulting from a natural cross with Teroldego, finds optimal conditions in the alluvial soils of Bolzano, Ora and Magreid. The natural cultivation of the selected partner farms respects the characteristic intensity of this Burgundy-coloured variety. Traditional mash fermentation at a controlled temperature in steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation and twelve months of ageing in large wooden barrels, results in a Lagrein with a classic character.

South Tyrol's autochthonous king grape variety finds its ancestral terroir on the permeable gravel and crushed stone soils of the Bolzano valley floor at 250 metres. Sand. The name is geology – and programme. The Lagrein vineyards are located in Gries, a district of Bolzano, at 250 metres above sea level in a closed basin that is one of the warmest locations in South Tyrol. Sandy alluvial soils of the Talfer river, interspersed with porphyry – a subsoil that stores heat, releases it slowly and gives the Lagrein the depth it needs to develop to its full potential. Mediterranean, hot, with an intensity not found at the cooler altitudes of the mountains. Lagrein is the autochthonous grape par excellence of South Tyrol. Lagrein – the "local hero" of South Tyrol, as cellar master Rudi Kofler calls it. Originally native to Bolzano, this indigenous grape variety has long since found a home in the Terlan area. Founded in 1893, the winery, the first co-operative in the village and today one of the most prestigious addresses for South Tyrolean white wines, also cultivates this traditional red variety with its own meticulousness. ![Lagrein Turmhof Alto Adige DOC 2023]()
Lagrein Turmhof Alto Adige DOC 2023
Lagrein is the great autochthonous red wine variety of South Tyrol – and at Tiefenbrunner it finds ideal conditions. The grapes come from the slopes of Entiklar and Margreider Leiten, at an altitude of 220 to 350 metres, where limestone gravel soils from moraine deposits provide mineral depth. Some of the vines were planted back in 1967 – experience you can taste. Maceration in stainless steel is followed by malolactic fermentation, after which the wine matures for eight months in large and small wooden barrels. The result: a Lagrein that combines power with elegance.

“Conus” Lagrein Mitterberg IGT 2021 (BIO)
The Lageder family has only been cultivating Lagrein on the geologically fascinating Margreider Schuttkegel for around ten years – thus opening up a completely new terroir for this indigenous grape variety. Conus, Latin for cone, refers to this unusual formation of dolomite limestone and gravelly sand between 230 and 320 metres. The biodynamic Demeter cultivation of the site promotes vines of particular stability and depth. After spontaneous fermentation, the Lagrein matures for twelve months, partly in stainless steel and partly in small wooden barrels.

Lagrein Alto Adige DOC 2023
Lagrein is one of the autochthonous grape varieties of South Tyrol and finds its ideal conditions at Franz Haas in sunny locations between 220 and 250 metres above sea level. Here, significantly lower than the white wine sites, the late-ripening variety benefits from warm, broodingalluvial soils with a high gravel content. The south-south-west exposure guarantees optimal sunlight until the late harvest – this is crucial for the full phenolic ripeness of this demanding grape variety. After careful manual harvesting, the grapes are carefully destemmed and fermented in open stainless steel tanks. The grape skins are gently and not too frequently submerged so as not to risk excessive tannin extraction. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine matures for 10 to 12 months in tonneau, where malolactic fermentation also takes place. A few months of bottle ageing round off the development before the Lagrein is released onto the market.

Ambassador for a region
Lagrein is one of Italy's great indigenous red wine treasures and undoubtedly the most distinctive. It has been rooted near Bolzano for centuries, and although it was once considered a rustic accompaniment to food, it has long since developed into a stylistically multifaceted flagship of South Tyrol. The variety was first mentioned in documents in 1379, and even if the name is reminiscent of the Greek Lagaria, the genetics and terroir clearly speak in favour of its Alpine origins. Closely related to Teroldego and distantly related to Syrah, Lagrein combines strength, colour and cool elegance in an unmistakable way.
Origins with depth
The historical centre of Lagrein lies in the Bolzano valley basin, particularly in Gries, where alluvial soil, high levels of sunshine and cool downslope winds meet. The fertile, gravelly soil produces concentrated yet balanced wines. In addition to Bolzano, wineries in Kaltern, Tramin and along the South Tyrolean Wine Road have also taken up the grape variety. Usually vinified as a strong red wine, it is also available as "Kretzer", a characterful rosato that was once widespread and is now celebrating a comeback.
Structure, style and expression
Lagrein impresses with its dense colour and aromas of dark berries, violets, dried herbs and a hint of dark chocolate. On the palate, it shows present tannins, a lively acidity structure and a tart, earthy core. The best examples offer depth, length and an animating interplay between maturity and freshness. The ageing in wooden barrels in particular gives it structure and longevity without masking its originality.
Winemakers with their own signature
Renowned producers such as Kellerei Bozen, St. Michael Eppan and Tiefenbrunner characterise the modern Lagrein image. Kaltern and Neumarkt are also producing increasingly complex Lagrein wines with high standards that do not have to hide behind international role models.
Lagrein and the kitchen
In culinary terms, Lagrein is a universal partner for Alpine and savoury dishes. It harmonises with game, lamb, braised beef, but also with mature mountain cheese or fried mushrooms. In a cuvée with Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon, it gains additional depth, but on its own it retains its characteristic "alpine seriousness". Ideally, it should be served at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in a full-bodied glass.
Powerful & intense in colour
The intense colour of Lagrein used to be so appreciated that it was often used to "colour" weaker red wines. In some regions of Italy, it was therefore treated almost like a pigment, but behind the strong colour lies a wine with surprising finesse. The Bolzano winery describes the soul of this red wine as follows: "Lagrein has the character of a mountain stream: clear, cool, untamed and with depth, if you let it."
