For a so-called basic Lagrein, a more than respectable performance: minty freshness, accentuated by floral notes and a hint of white pepper. Corresponding crisp red and black fruit, the whole driven by juicy acidity and lots of pressure. Very impressive and with potential! SUPERIORE.DE

Sweet violets, confectioner’s spice, musky berries and an enriching note of brown sugar all create a deeply alluring bouquet. It’s remarkably juicy and fresh, flaunting its ripe dark fruits while blending zesty acids and minerals to create a high-energy expression. There’s a loss of momentum toward the close, yet coming across as quite clean, with hints of wild berry fruits that slowly taper off." Vinous

Lagrein Turmhof Alto Adige DOC 2018

Red classic from South Tyrol in a strong garnet red with violet reflections. Discreet bouquet of violets and red cherry fruit. Fine tannins, a round body and a discreet acidity make this red a high-quality companion for regional-rustic cuisine. SUPERIORE.DE

"Very strong, dense purple red. In the nose dark fruits, elderberries, cassis, in addition peppery nuances as well as vegetal hints. On the palate soft with a beautiful melting and balancing structure with ripe acidity and noticeable tannin. Finishes fruity and spicy." Falstaff

"A savory red with black-fruit, sweet-tobacco and flower-leaf undertones. Medium-bodied with round tannins and a flavorful finish." James Suckling

"The 2018 Lagrein Turmhof from Tiefenbrunner is dark, feral and even a bit rustic, but in the best possible way. It's as if you can smell the earth which these vines grow in. It leaps from the glass with a mix of dark, mineral-laden soil, crushed black cherry, brown spice and hints of violets. Velvety smooth from start to finish, there doesn't seem to be a single thing out of place here, hosting red and blue fruits with sweet inner florals and a core of minerality. Fine tannins clench the palate throughout the final, balanced by residual acids, and with a lasting note of tart wild berries. The Turmhof spends eight months in a mix of both small and large neutral oak, which does wonders to create an elegant expression." Vinous

    • "Gries" Lagrein Riserva Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018

“Gries” Lagrein Riserva Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018

Deep dark violet. On the nose, tart black cherry and notes of violet candy, graphite and spicy herbs. On the palate, a wonderfully velvety texture, yet punchy, salty and with grippy tannins. Perfectly integrated wood, good structure and a justified hope for a long, ripe life. SUPERIORE.DE

"Very dense blackberry and forest-berry nose, but somehow it manages to be delicate too, black-tea and licorice notes developing with aeration. Concentrated and plush, the tannins are really fine for this often hard-edged grape variety, gently leading you into the warm and supple crescendo finish." James Suckling

    • "Gries" Lagrein Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2018

“Gries” Lagrein Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2018

From old vines in the best Lagrein locations in Gries near Bolzano, this strictly limited edition Riserva with its seductive chocolaty fruity bouquet comes every year. Deep, dark purple with a slightly brightening edge. On the palate it presents itself velvety and elegant with a soft fullness and lively freshness and sets further fruity accents on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2018 Lagrein Riserva Gries draws you closer to the glass with a display of musky black cherry, blueberry, rubbed sage and tobacco. It’s much more lifted and agile than you’d expect, impressing more through vibrancy and spicy grip than texture alone. A mix of tart red fruits and minerals penetrate deeply, leaving a coating of round tannins and residual acids to mingle under an air of violet flowers. The 2018 Gries could use a few years of cellaring to show its best, but it can be enjoyed today for the power and primary intensity found within." Vinous

    Things to know aboutLagrein

Lagrein is a speciality from the northern Italian wine regions of South Tyrol and Trentino. It is believed that the name derives from "Valle Lagarina", a side valley in Trentino. One parent is Teroldego after the last analysis, the other parent is still being researched. It is interesting to note that until the 18th century there was also a white Lagreiner, of which nobody knows today whether it was perhaps a very light rosé (there is still the Lagrein Kretzer, as the rosé is called in South Tyrol), or whether it was a white wine from other varieties.

    Lagrein - the velvet softness.

Lagrein can be recognized relatively easily by its dark berry aromas and a delicate violet scent, often also plums and sour cherries. It has a dark colour, is full-bodied and velvety, has mild tannins and a moderate acidity. As a local red wine, it is currently booming in South Tyrol. But also internationally the demand is increasing among lovers of independent and autochthonous grape variety wines. And this is clear, there is actually no comparable red wine that brings this wonderful dark fruit fullness with simultaneous mildness and velvety. Pure regional grape variety typicity. Red Lagrein is often called Lagrein Dunkel or Lagrein Scuro, Rosé is also called Rosato or Lagrein Kretzer.

So if you are looking for a powerful, dark, yet mild, velvety red wine, Lagrein is the right choice for you. With just over 700 hectares, the variety is quite rare and can be described as a regional, autochthonous grape variety. The best representatives come from the area around Gries near Bolzano. Some few, mostly emigrated Italian winegrowers, cultivate this variety also in California and Australia on a trial basis. By the way, there is also an experimental cultivation on the Moselle, where preparations are apparently being made for climate change.  SUPERIORE.DE
