Alte d'Altesi consists of equal parts of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and matures for at least 12 months in barriques. Vivid purple red, soft fragrance with delicate finesse, opens with aromas of sour cherry and plum, followed by violets and vanilla with hints of menthol and cloves. A full round body and elegant tannins characterise the taste. SUPERIORE.DE

"A soft and fruity red with plum, berry and mineral aromas and flavors. Nice Tuscan dust undertones. Full body, lovely sweet fruit and a fresh finish." James Suckling

"Altesino 2012 Alte d'Altesi is quite striking in this vintage. Dark plum, smoke, grilled herbs, licorice and spices jump from the glass. The blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot works beautifully in this flagship red from Altesino. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. Hints of rose petal, mint and cinnamon wrap around the pliant finish." Antonio Galloni

"A blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this supple, delicious wine opens with aromas of blackberry, tilled soil, leather, vanilla and tobacco. The juicy palate doles out black cherry, fleshy plum, well-integrated oak and graphite. It’s balanced with firm but fine-grained tannins and modest acidity." Wine Enthusiast

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2011

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2011

We will gladly enumerate: deep dark, intense bouquet, full body, rich taste, strong texture, focused personality and impressive length. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino shows a very distinct personality that separates it from its peers. There's a dark, mysterious and masculine side to this wine that is evident from first impact. The bouquet offers infinite layers of black fruit, plum, spice, cumin seed and crushed clove. You get a great sense of moist earth, tobacco and forest floor. Nothing is obvious. The wine keeps you guessing sip after sip. It would benefit from more years of cellar aging, but it's really not that far off from optimal drinking." Robert Parker

"Altesino's 2011 Brunello di Montalcino opens with beguiling aromatics. Sage, licorice, menthol and sweet tobacco flesh out nicely as the wine shows off its ample, broad personality. The tannins could use another year or two to soften, but all the elements are very nicely balanced throughout. This gracious, silky Brunello will drink well for the next decade-plus." Antonio Galloni

"This is long and delicious with lovely cherry, chocolate and fresh walnut flavors. Linear yet open with persistence and joy." James Suckling

"Fragrant and sleek, this opens with scents of blue flower, pressed powder, perfumed berry and chopped herb. The balanced, full-bodied palate delivers licorice, ripe black cherry, clove and tobacco while firm, velvety tannins lend structure and finesse." Wine Enthusiast

"The sweet cherry core is framed by dense, ripe tannins in this red. Leather, tobacco and iron notes add depth. The finish is fresh and long." Wine Spectator

    • Brunello di Montalcino "Montosoli" DOCG 2011

Brunello di Montalcino “Montosoli” DOCG 2011

Brunello di Montalcino from Montosoli shows a lot of dynamism, concentration, alcohol and extract. Deep garnet red, accompanied by complex aromas of herbs, currants, cherries, earth and tobacco. This persistent, full-bodied and spectacular Brunello will present itself in its most beautiful form after a few years. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli provides us with one of the most beautiful tastes of Brunello in 2011. The secret here is that fruit is sourced from the Montosoli cru in the northern side of the appellation that performed very nicely in this warm vintage. The wine reaches excellent balance between power and elegance. It leaves a statement but never feels overwhelming. That intensity is presented in terms of fruit freshness, cherry, blackberry and currant. It also comes forth as spice, tobacco and leather. The mouthfeel is exceedingly smooth and silky. The tannins are integrated and soft. Montosoli is planted to a special clone that is grafted over when the vines die. The clone has never been replaced. Because the vineyard is located on the north side of the appellation, it was protected from the heat this vintage." Robert Parker

"A very ripe style with prune, berry and salted-nut aromas and flavors. Full body, savory intensity and a long, flavorful finish. Lots of juicy, fabulous fruit. Shows the greatness of the vineyard." James Suckling

"Complex aromas and flavors of macerated cherry, plum, eucalyptus, tobacco and mineral are the hallmarks of this sweet yet structured Brunello. Fine length." Wine Spectator

"Wild berry, sunbaked soil, chopped mint, leather and menthol aromas meld together on this on this impressive wine. The bright, juicy palate doles out ripe wild cherry, crushed raspberry, mint, anise, clove and a hint of tobacco. Fresh acidity and velvety tannins offset the chewy fruit flavors and lend balance." Brunello di Montalcino “Montosoli” DOCG 2013

Brunello di Montalcino from single vineyard Montosoli shows a lot of dynamics, concentration, spice and extract. Deep garnet red, accompanied by complex aromas of herbs, currants, cherries, earth and tobacco. This persistent, full-bodied and spectacular Brunello will present itself in its most beautiful form after a few years. SUPERIORE.DE

"Opulent aromas of plum, dark berry, flower and sandalwood. Full body. Dense yet vivid and energetic. Wonderful exotic character and intensity. Great finish." James Suckling

"This celebrated single-vineyard wine follows through with many of the attractive themes presented in the base Brunello, only you get more robust intensity and power here. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli is slightly more angular and edgy. You don't get the same immediate silkiness that you find in the non-vineyard-specific alternative. This wine plays up its structure with firm tannins and solid building blocks of red fruit and spice. There is a sweet note of clove or cinnamon on the close." Robert Parker

"Good full pale ruby-red. Knockout aromas and flavors of red cherry, raspberry, licorice and minerals, complicated by hints of iris and violet. Extremely suave and polished on the extremely long, pure, mineral finish. Deeper, richer, more tannic and longer than the lovely 2013 Brunello Classico from Altesino, this is an absolutely beautiful Brunello. I especially like that the pristine, refined aromas and flavors of the famed Montosoli site are showcased to maximum effect here. One of the best Brunellos of the vintage." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

"Balsamic notes of juniper, sage and eucalyptus are buried underneath the cherry and plum fruit in this expressive, supple red, which is dense and well-structured, with excellent balance and a long iron and saline aftertaste. Just a tad richer and broader than the blended Brunello." Wine Spectator

"Enticing aromas of ripe berry, chopped herb, new leather, tobacco and a whiff of eucalyptus all mingle together on this gorgeous, vibrant red. The stunning, savory palate boasts juicy red cherry, pomegranate, white pepper and star anise while firm refined tannins and vibrant acidity lend structure and balance. It's already extraordinary and elegant but also young and primary, so give it time to fully develop." Wine Enthusiast

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2012

Lavish Brunello Riserva with a bouquet of sweet black cherries, frankincense, liquorice and tobacco. In the taste much depth, immense fullness and great personality. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense, sparkling ruby garnet. Very attractive and intense nose, ripe, fleshy berry fruit, blackberry and mulberry, paired with fine spicy notes. Round and smooth in the base and course, opens with a lot of ripe fruit, plums and pickled cherries, powerful, dense tannin, encased by fine enamel, very successful! Falstaff

"Sporting a medium dark color, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is the most robust and powerful wine among these new releases from Altesino. More than its Riserva status (that requires an extra year of aging compared to base Brunello), that richness is a result of the dry and hot 2012 growing season. You really feel the tightness, blackness and the alcohol of the fruit here. By the way, the alcohol is 15%, so it is indeed high for Sangiovese. There is a note of cherry sweetness on the close. Thankfully, there is also enough natural acidity to bring the wine back to center and balance." Robert Parker

"Plenty of dark cherry essence, blackberry pie, a touch of plum liqueur, baking spices, charcuterie, resin and dried herbs. The palate echoes the richness of the nose with no shortage of dried-fruit flavors, while also embracing tightly wound tannins and a streak of refreshing acidity." James Suckling

"Deep red. Captivating floral nuances complement red cherry, mineral and tobacco elements on the nose and on the very suave palate. Surprisingly light-bodied for a Brunello Riserva, but perfumed and very refined. This outstanding Brunello Riserva boasts a finish that lasts and lasts." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

    About the winemakers
    Altesino
    Tuscany | Montalcino
    Altesino

The Altesino vineyard, situated in the Chianti Classico area between gentle hills east of Montalcino, can rightly be called a pioneer in some fields. One of the most advanced developments was that in 1979 the company introduced barrique ageing for the first time in the Montalcino region. The Brunello, until then a quite angular wine, became an elegant and pleasantly drinkable red wine by the aging in French oak. Four years earlier, the Cru concept had already been introduced in the Montosoli vineyard, known for its particularly elegant wines. In 1977 the first Grappa di Fattoria was produced under the direction of the master distiller Gioacchino Nannoni. Further milestones in the history of Altesino were the first forward contract on a Brunello in 1985 (sale of the "in primeur") and 1997 was the starting point for experiments with barriques.

Since 2002, the Altesino Winery has been owned by Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini, a pharmaceutical and cosmetics entrepreneur from Rome. Since then it has been technically supported by technical director and previous owner Claudio Basla and by oenologists Pietro Rivella and Paolo Caciorgna. After the turn of the millennium, the estate, in the centre of which lies the splendid Palazzo Altesi, built in the 15th century by the noble Tricerchi family, was equipped with modern and functional structures for fermentation, refinement and bottling of noble plants. Seven quality wines are pressed in the estate today. Two grappas, a brandy, a Vin Santo and an extra virgin olive oil complete the assortment.

On a total agricultural area of around 80 hectares, 44 hectares are intended for wine production. They are divided into the Crus Altesino, Macina, Castelnuovo dell'Abate (in Velona), Pianezzine and Montosoli. Apart from the Sangiovese di Montalcino (Sangiovese Grosso) variety, which occupies most of the vineyard area and is mainly used for the production of Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino and Palazzo Altesi, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot red varieties are also cultivated in the vineyards. The white Trebbiano, Malvasia, Vermentino, Chardonnay and Viognier varieties round off the range of grapes cultivated at the Altesino estate. SUPERIORE.DE

"It is not a single factor, but the perfect balance of exposure, microclimate, soil and the planted Brunello clone that makes this vineyard so exceptional. Montosoli produces very good grapes even in climatically less good years. But in good years, they're extraordinary." Claudio Basla
