Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2020
Altesino's Rosso di Montalcino, aged for eight months in Slavonian oak barrels, offers a persistent bouquet of fresh fruit, wild berries and young leather. Harmonious on the palate with cherry and plum flavours and of nice length. SUPERIORE.DE
"Cedary spice, dried cherries and crushed rocks form an inviting display as the 2020 Rosso di Montalcino opens in the glass. This is a round and forward effort, with lavender-tinged cherry fruit and bright acidity that adds an energetic feel. Lightly structured yet potent, this finishes with admirable length and class." Vinous
"Lovely balance and freshness to this, showing what Rosso di Montalcino is supposed to be like. Medium body, fine tannins and a fresh, creamy-textured finish." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018
Generous Brunello made from grapes from different vineyards in different subzones in Montalcino with the classic charisma of its 2018 vintage. The aromatically intense bouquet opens in a scent of violets and then develops aromas of wild berry, vanilla, tobacco and chocolate. The taste is characterised by a good balance between full, juicy body, soft tannin and well-integrated alcohol. SUPERIORE.DE
"Typical, fruity bouquet, with dark red and black berry hints (red currant, cassis), again spicy and ethereal notes reminiscent of mint. The ripe fruit is charmingly embraced by a fine corset of tannins. This has power and fine draw. A juicy 2018." Weinwisser
"With vineyards throughout Montalcino, Altesino started harvest at the beginning of September with its southernmost holdings. After rain mid-month, the estate continued with plots in the north. The resulting wine is light yet bright in colour with an immediately attractive nose of raspberry and tarragon. Linear and direct, the chiselled palate offers mineral intrigue with an expansive juiciness. Dainty tannins are almost an afterthought, but acidity will carry this midweight, balanced charmer." Decanter
"The Altesino 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is an especially graceful wine with tart fruit, clean mineral lines and a mid-weight approach. You can drink the wine soon or choose to cellar it a bit longer. The young tannins are nearly fully approachable, and the wine ends with dryness and ample freshness." Wine Advocate
"This has fantastic intensity with concentrated hazelnut, chocolate and dark berry aromas alongside dried flower and dried orange undertones. Firm and medium- to full-bodied, with powerful yet integrated tannins. Excellent structural integrity. Try in 2024." James Suckling
"Remarkable this basic version by Altesino as well, which emphasizes all the crispness of raw materials from North-eastern Montalcino. Notes of strawberry tree to the nose, touches of mint and juniper. Balsamicmentholated return to the palate, then citrus fruits and orange peel. Persistent." Luca Gardini

Brunello di Montalcino “Montosoli” DOCG 2018
Montosoli 2018 presents itself in bright ruby and with a clear bouquet of raspberry, blood orange and hot spices. Strict elegance on the palate, red fruits, flowers, tobacco and grass, plus slightly salty minerality, long in the finish. A Burgundy-like style with the tannin and structure of a great Brunello. SUPERIORE.DE
"Classic raspberry and floral aromas, the wood perfectly integrated; polished and finely chiselled on the palate, the tannins and acidity in balance, finishes long." Vinum
"The single vineyard shows itself somewhat more reductive and dense with fine toasted notes, blackberry jam and candied cherries. On the creamy dense palate juicy without end, creamy texture, long and lingering. Has good richness and melting for the vintage." Weinwisser
"Brilliant medium ruby red. Concentrated, sweet, red-fruity bouquet with a hint of oak, but aged only in large oak barrels. Spicy hints. Soy sauce. The same elegant constitution on the palate as the classic Brunello, but with firmer tannins and more compact, youthful fruit. I would wait another two years before approaching this wine. Great length and elegance with a touch of seductive oak." Jancis Robinson
"Altesino's Montosoli was harvested between late September and early October and reduced by 50% due to a rigorous selection of grapes. The nose reveals appealing nuances of vanilla, cedar and truffle that combine beautifully with sweet wild berry aromas. The fine-grained tannins are still tight and firm, enclosing the admirably concentrated core. With further bottle age, it will show even more of its charm." Decanter
"A dense, tannic red, with plum, cherry, menthol, iron and spice flavors driven by lively acidity. A bit more burly than many 2018s, yet this remains vibrant, superlong and complex." Wine Spectator
"The word "Vigna" was added to the official name of this wine to emphasise the work done in the appellation, which focuses on single vineyards. The Altesino 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli comes from a unique site with some of the best vineyard sites on the hillside. This wine has a slightly dark colour and a high concentration and depth. I am excited by the bouquet that reveals dark cherries, blue flowers, crushed stone and grilled herbs. In the background there are sweet roasted aromas and spices. This is one of the most complete and storable wines of the 2018 vintage." Wine Advocate
"Complex nose of cranberries, dried pineapple, soy, bark, cardamom, mocha, iodine and wet leather. Full-bodied, with firm and very fine tannins. The wine gains intensity, unfolding a wide range of fresh and dried fruits and espresso beans before coming back together in a long and powerful finish. Already fantastic." James Suckling
"The magnificent modern interpretation of a Cru that has been vinified as such since 1975. A Brunello of amazing freshness and elegance, with notes of wild blueberries, hints of clementina and marjoram. Great freshness and juiciness on the palate, with iodine-rich tannins. Fruity-floral finish." Luca Gardini

SUPERIORE.DE
"Always a crowd pleaser, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli is a beautifully crafted wine. It shows depth, intensity and loads of authenticity both in terms of grape variety and territory. Dark cherry and blackberry rise from the bouquet with spice, pipe tobacco and moist earth in tow. The wine is layered and nuanced. That Sangiovese authenticity comes through loud and clear on the palate. This is a mid-weight wine with polished but firm tannins and evident acidity. It shows a burst of freshness on the finish." Wine Advocate
"This finds good equilibrium between the ripe berry, cherry, tobacco, iron and tea notes. Firm and chewy, with hints of leather and underbrush on the long aftertaste." Wine spectator
"Balancing power and grace, this wine delivers alluring aromas and flavors of ripe black cherry, raspberry compote, grilled herb, licorice and tar. Vibrant acidity and firm, velvety tannins provide freshness and structure, while a hint of pipe tobacco closes the lingering finish." Wine Enthusiast
"Fantastic aromas of blueberries, plums, bark and wet earth follow through to a full body, velvety and polished tannins and a wonderful finish. Refined and persistent on the finish." James Suckling
"Mid ruby with narrow, orange rim. Reluctant, savoury, minerally nose with only hints of raspberry and sour cherry. Energetic, tangy cherry and raspberry fruit and with crunchy, long tannins on the finish. Really unfurls aromatically on the finish." Jancis Robinson

Brunello di Montalcino “Montosoli” DOCG 2013 · MAGNUM in gift box
Brunello di Montalcino from single vineyard Montosoli shows a lot of dynamics, concentration, spice and extract. Deep garnet red, accompanied by complex aromas of herbs, currants, cherries, earth and tobacco. This persistent, full-bodied and spectacular Brunello will present itself in its most beautiful form after a few years. SUPERIORE.DE
"Opulent aromas of plum, dark berry, flower and sandalwood. Full body. Dense yet vivid and energetic. Wonderful exotic character and intensity. Great finish." James Suckling
"This celebrated single-vineyard wine follows through with many of the attractive themes presented in the base Brunello, only you get more robust intensity and power here. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli is slightly more angular and edgy. You don't get the same immediate silkiness that you find in the non-vineyard-specific alternative. This wine plays up its structure with firm tannins and solid building blocks of red fruit and spice. There is a sweet note of clove or cinnamon on the close." Wine Advocate
"Good full pale ruby-red. Knockout aromas and flavors of red cherry, raspberry, licorice and minerals, complicated by hints of iris and violet. Extremely suave and polished on the extremely long, pure, mineral finish. Deeper, richer, more tannic and longer than the lovely 2013 Brunello Classico from Altesino, this is an absolutely beautiful Brunello. I especially like that the pristine, refined aromas and flavors of the famed Montosoli site are showcased to maximum effect here. One of the best Brunellos of the vintage." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)
"Balsamic notes of juniper, sage and eucalyptus are buried underneath the cherry and plum fruit in this expressive, supple red, which is dense and well-structured, with excellent balance and a long iron and saline aftertaste. Just a tad richer and broader than the blended Brunello." Wine Spectator
"Enticing aromas of ripe berry, chopped herb, new leather, tobacco and a whiff of eucalyptus all mingle together on this gorgeous, vibrant red. The stunning, savory palate boasts juicy red cherry, pomegranate, white pepper and star anise while firm refined tannins and vibrant acidity lend structure and balance. It's already extraordinary and elegant but also young and primary, so give it time to fully develop." Wine Enthusiast

Brunello di Montalcino “Montosoli” DOCG 2011 · MAGNUM in gift box
Brunello di Montalcino from single vineyard Montosoli shows a lot of dynamism, concentration, alcohol and extract. Deep garnet red, accompanied by complex aromas of herbs, currants, cherries, earth and tobacco. This persistent, full-bodied and spectacular Brunello will present itself in its most beautiful form after a few years. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli provides us with one of the most beautiful tastes of Brunello in 2011. The secret here is that fruit is sourced from the Montosoli cru in the northern side of the appellation that performed very nicely in this warm vintage. The wine reaches excellent balance between power and elegance. It leaves a statement but never feels overwhelming. That intensity is presented in terms of fruit freshness, cherry, blackberry and currant. It also comes forth as spice, tobacco and leather. The mouthfeel is exceedingly smooth and silky. The tannins are integrated and soft. Montosoli is planted to a special clone that is grafted over when the vines die. The clone has never been replaced. Because the vineyard is located on the north side of the appellation, it was protected from the heat this vintage." Wine Advocate
"A very ripe style with prune, berry and salted-nut aromas andflavors. Full body, savory intensity and a long, flavorful finish. Lotsof juicy, fabulous fruit. Shows the greatness of the vineyard." James Suckling
"Complex aromas and flavors of macerated cherry, plum, eucalyptus, tobacco and mineral are the hallmarks of this sweet yet structured Brunello. Fine length." Wine Spectator
"Wild berry, sunbaked soil, chopped mint, leather and menthol aromas meld together on this on this impressive wine. The bright, juicy palate doles out ripe wild cherry, crushed raspberry, mint, anise, clove and a hint of tobacco. Fresh acidity and velvety tannins offset the chewy fruit flavors and lend balance." Brunello di Montalcino “Montosoli 40 anni” DOCG 2015 · MAGNUM in gift box
Montosoli 2015 in bright ruby and with a clear bouquet of raspberry, blood orange and hot spices. Strict elegance on the palate, red fruits, flowers, tobacco and grass, with a slightly salty minerality, long finish. A Burgundy style with the tannin and structure of a great Brunello from an equally great vintage. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium red; fruity, also cassis, arouses curiosity; round base, sweetness, good length, very pleasant." Merum
" Flower of violets and raspberries, also elegant balsamic notes; elegant structure with fine-grained tannins and beautiful progression towards aromas of ripe fruit, leather and dried flowers. A good accompaniment to food." Vinum
"Quite deep, firm scent of ripe mixed berries and a little cherry with delicate nutty and spicy aromas, a touch of bacon, pepper and mineral tones. Clear, firm, polished, rather juicy fruit with bite and youthful, yet very fine tannins, persistent on the palate, a little peppery spice in the background, also a little wood and roasting, a touch of tobacco and herbs, restrained power, good depth, nutty notes, multi-layered, very good, firm, juicy and spicy finish with salt and draught." Wein-Plus
"Bright ruby with a fine garnet shimmer. Very clear, appealing nose of fresh, ripe cherries, some dried orange peel and cloves. Blossoms beautifully on the palate, very well worked out, present fruit, fresh cherry, opens with a lot of fine-meshed tannin, builds up for a long time." Falstaff
"Rich and round, featuring cherry, raspberry, floral and mineral aromas and flavors. Graceful and intense, showing terrific balance, with a long, fruit-, tobacco- and mineral-tinged aftertaste. Exhibits fine purity and freshness." Wine Spectator
"Underbrush, mature berry and exotic spice aromas mingle with a whiff of leather. Firmly structured and linear, the palate features ripe Marasca cherry, cranberry, licorice and tobacco while tightly wound, fine-grained tannins provide the backbone. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Give it time to fully develop." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli has a dark, hauntingly beautiful bouquet, displaying ripe blackberry and cherry with spicy, dark florals, as well as a hint of animal musk, which manages to ground the experience in the earth. On the palate, velvety textures, offset by tart red and black fruits, with juicy acidity maintain balance, as sweet cherries and rosemary give way to a core of minerality and hints of fine tannin. It finishes long and elegant, showing dark inner florals, ripe blackberry and lingering sweet spices. It’s interesting to taste this next to the classic Brunello from 2015, as I find them to be equally enjoyable, but for completely different reasons." Vinous
"Altesino's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli shows those celebrated characteristics of this special vineyard cru that are always portrayed with pronounced mineral intensity, with highlights of crushed granite and pencil shaving. Indeed, Altesino's five-hectare Montosoli vineyard sees a greater concentration of clay schist Galestro rock, and the vineyard altitude (at 350 meters above sea level) adds to the wine's perceived freshness. In this case, those mineral notes are applied with small brush strokes, as the core of the wine is occupied by wild fruit and forest berry. Medicinal herb and rosemary essence appear quietly at the back. This is a very compact and bright wine with young tannins and solid structure. It has all the attributes you look for in a candidate that can withstand long cellar aging. I'd suggest waiting five years or more before popping this cork." Wine Advocate
"A very nuanced but powerful Brunello showing hibiscus, raspberry tea, gunpowder, petrichor, dried orange rind and spearmint. The rows of sharp tannins are very defined and agile, and the acidity is tensely strung up in overtures of vivacious red fruit. A beautiful, nimble Brunello 2015. Drink from 2024." James Suckling

Brunello di Montalcino “Montosoli” DOCG 2016 · MAGNUM in gift box
Montosoli lovers will be anything but disappointed by the archetype of the 2016 vintage. In this exceptional year, this special single vineyard shows a beautifully fragrant and floral bouquet that exactly meets the expectations of connoisseurs. Thus, for us, this edition represents the ideal interpretation of grape variety and terroir like hardly any other. The Sangiovese grape sounds bright and audible here from the glass - with nuances of small berries and floral impressions of rose, violet and lavender. In the drink, its complexity and multi-layeredness is rounded off by subtle notes of anise, cola and liquorice sticks. This fabulous wine, which is already inspiring, is always balancingly soft and silky and will - even if one hardly thinks it possible - gain in refinement and expression after a few more years of ageing! SUPERIORE.DE
"Seductive raspberry-scented wine with juice and polish; pithy on the palate, acidity well integrated, tight yet noticeable tannins, pleases with its polish, demonstrates finesse through to the final. With a hearty bistecca." Vinum
"Lustrous ruby. Concentrated cherry nose with an earthy, minerally note and a hint of gingerbread. With aeration more and more minerally. Tangy gentle fruit with the merest suggestion of oak. Gorgeous chewy tannins. Very suave, supple and elegant." Jancis Robinson
"Altesino has been producing a separate bottling from the cru of Montosoli since 1975, though the vines were partially replanted in 2005 and 2016. If Altesino's estate Brunello is almost accessible already, the polished yet intense Montosoli needs time in the cellar to demonstrate its potential. The nose is discreet with violet, bramble and bay leaf taking on earthy, savoury tones as it sits in the glass. Tight and firmly fastened, the palate fuses stony notes of granite with dark cherry. Ageing is in 30hL casks of Slavonian oak." Decanter
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli pulls you close to the glass with a captivating display of candied citrus rinds, incense and dried roses giving way to rich cherry sauce and a hint of brown spice. It's deeply textural yet youthfully dense, as it first cools the palate with lavender and ripe dark red fruits; yet beneath is a layer of grippy tannins that close the wine down. Notes of licorice, black tea and purple florals linger on the youthfully chewy finale. The 2016 is just a baby today, and it will need a number of years to come fully into focus - but it will be worth the wait." Vinous
"The Altesino 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli is a true beauty. The wine reveals dark fruit intensity that comes forth as blackberry, plum and summer cherry. In no time, those aromas shift to the savory side of the spectrum with smoke, tar and tobacco. The results are generous and layered, offering the best of what the celebrated Montosoli cru can offer, especially in an ironic vintage such as this." Wine Advocate
"Lovely sweet cherries and heather with some leather and balsamic undertones. It's full-bodied with a velvety and lightly dusty palate. Juicy fruit and pretty orange peel to the berry character. Hints of cedar and meat at the end. Subtle and complex." James Suckling
"Rose, forest berry, underbrush and new leather are some of the aromas you'll find on this full-bodied red. From one of Montalcino's greatest vineyard sites, the firmly structured, elegant palate is also delicious, boasting ripe black cherry, raspberry compote, tobacco and licorice set against taut, fine-grained tannins. It's well balanced, with bright acidity." Wine Enthusiast
"Packed with sweet, ripe cherry, plum and raspberry fruit and framed by loamy earth and woodsy notes, this red is intense, lively and light on its feet. Balanced, with firm tannins and a salty, minerally impression on the lingering aftertaste." Wine Spectator

Brunello di Montalcino “Montosoli” DOCG 2017 · MAGNUM in gift box
Altesinos Montosoli is always a crowd pleaser and a beautiful wine. It shows depth, intensity and plenty of authenticity both in terms of the grape variety and the area. Dark cherries and blackberries rise from the bouquet with spices, pipe tobacco and damp earth in tow. The wine is complex and nuanced. The authenticity of the Sangiovese comes through clearly on the palate. It is a medium-bodied wine with polished but firm tannins and distinct acidity. The finish shows a touch of freshness, minerality, notes of mint and great depth. SUPERIORE.DE
"Spicy, fruity aromatics, wild berries and roses; the attack is multi-layered, has character but also plenty of polish, the ell-long finish on notes of stone fruit and undergrowth." Vinum
"Firm and quite deep, nutty and very slightly cocoa-spicy aroma of ripe black berries, more black than red, with clear tar, a touch of cherries, hints of dried flowers and herbs as well as nutty tones. Tart, with air increasingly juicy, very tightly knit, rather dark fruit with present, nutty wood spice, some toasty cocoa and coffee notes as well as a little dried herbs, hints of juniper in the background, noticeable, but integrated alcohol, slightly ethereal, juniper-like spice, salty nuances, quite complex, still completely undeveloped, very good, firm, again toasty finish. Definitely needs to mature." Wein-Plus
"Shiny, rich ruby red with a fine garnet shimmer. Very clear and fruity nose, fresh, raspberry and dark cherry, fennel in the background. Round and supple in the attack and course, grippy tannin with fine melting, spreads out richly, nice pressure in the final." Falstaff
"The aromatics alone are worth the price of entry on the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli. A dazzling display is revealed as this opens like a basket of freshly picked flowers with ripe strawberries, cloves and a hint of plum sauce that adds gravitas. Its elegance is nicely matched by a balanced inner sweetness, as mineral-tinged red berries are contrasted by hints of sour citrus and savory spice. Fine tannins mount, yet are almost imperceptible until the finish, where notes of blood orange mingle with licorice and inner rose. In a word, spellbinding. While some cellaring will be needed, I expect the 2017 Montosoli to enjoy a broad, open and highly pleasurable drinking window." Vinous
"This is one of the icon wines of Montalcino and one of the bottles that best captures the character of this prized vineyard cru. Altesino farms 4.5 hectares in Montosoli at 350 meters in elevation with galestro soils. The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli is darkly concentrated and rich. It shows an almost creamy consistency that was not easy to achieve in this hot vintage that tends to underline tannic power and alcohol. Instead, this wine offers a steady stream of dark fruit flavors that transition to spice, leather and sweet tobacco." Wine Advocate
"This concentrated red is saturated by black currant, blackberry and blueberry flavors, with notes of iron, tar, tobacco and wild herbs chiming in as it evolves toward the long finish. So fresh and fruity, it's hard to believe this is a 2017 if not for the stiff tannins. Shows superb balance and complexity." Wine Spectator
"Super clean black fruit and minerals on the nose and palate. Floral and herbal nuances, too. Medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins and a long finish. This is super-clean, long and balanced. Despite the difficult vintage, Montosoli shows its class. One of the wines of the vintage. Best from 2024." James Suckling

The Altesino vineyard, situated in the Chianti Classico area between gentle hills east of Montalcino, can rightly be called a pioneer in some fields. One of the most advanced developments was that in 1979 the company introduced barrique ageing for the first time in the Montalcino region. The Brunello, until then a quite angular wine, became an elegant and pleasantly drinkable red wine by the aging in French oak. Four years earlier, the Cru concept had already been introduced in the Montosoli vineyard, known for its particularly elegant wines. In 1977 the first Grappa di Fattoria was produced under the direction of the master distiller Gioacchino Nannoni. Further milestones in the history of Altesino were the first forward contract on a Brunello in 1985 (sale of the "in primeur") and 1997 was the starting point for experiments with barriques.
Since 2002, the Altesino Winery has been owned by Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini, a pharmaceutical and cosmetics entrepreneur from Rome. Since then it has been technically supported by technical director and previous owner Claudio Basla and by oenologists Pietro Rivella and Paolo Caciorgna. After the turn of the millennium, the estate, in the centre of which lies the splendid Palazzo Altesi, built in the 15th century by the noble Tricerchi family, was equipped with modern and functional structures for fermentation, refinement and bottling of noble plants. Seven quality wines are pressed in the estate today. Two grappas, a brandy, a Vin Santo and an extra virgin olive oil complete the assortment.
On a total agricultural area of around 80 hectares, 44 hectares are intended for wine production. They are divided into the Crus Altesino, Macina, Castelnuovo dell'Abate (in Velona), Pianezzine and Montosoli. Apart from the Sangiovese di Montalcino (Sangiovese Grosso) variety, which occupies most of the vineyard area and is mainly used for the production of Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino and Palazzo Altesi, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot red varieties are also cultivated in the vineyards. The white Trebbiano, Malvasia, Vermentino, Chardonnay and Viognier varieties round off the range of grapes cultivated at the Altesino estate. SUPERIORE.DE
"It is not a single factor, but the perfect balance of exposure, microclimate, soil and the planted Brunello clone that makes this vineyard so exceptional. Montosoli produces very good grapes even in climatically less good years. But in good years, they're extraordinary." Claudio Basla
