“Dolée” Friulano Friuli Isonzo DOC 2022
Friulano Dolée is another impressive Vie di Romans flagship. Bright straw yellow in colour. Clean, fresh aromas of honey, citrus fruit and pear, complemented by ripe banana. “Flors di Uis” Cuvée Bianco Friuli Isonzo DOC 2022
Vibrant, golden straw yellow in colour. The floral and spicy nose offers ripe pear, cinnamon, chamomile, white peach and grapefruit with subtle hints of ginger. Rich and racy, with multi-layered flavours of orchard and tropical fruit and a subtle spiciness that lingers beautifully on the rich, luscious finish. Its excellent salinity and a very juicy, fresh cut accompany the tropical and spicy fruit flavours on the long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Flors Di Uis is remarkably pretty, exuding an exotic blend of candied lime and tropical melon, emphasised by a hint of sweet spice. The palate is soft and round, but with a core of zesty acidity to balance it out. Ripe peaches and minty herbs emerge towards the end. The 2022 tapers off on a mineral note, is medium-bodied and clean, leaving a pleasant bitter lemon concentration that fades slowly. The beautiful balance keeps me coming back to the glass for more." Beautiful Malvasia with a lot of varietal expression and an impressive potpourri of flavours. Jasmine, pear and white peach develop in the glass, with hints of passion fruit, spices and lime on the palate. “Vieris” Sauvignon Bianco Friuli Isonzo DOC 2022

“Piere” Sauvignon Bianco Friuli Isonzo DOC 2022
Rive Alte Sauvignon Blanc Piere is the lighter coloured of the estate's two Sauvignons, but both wines are beautiful in their own right. Piere shows earthy notes of green olive, garden tomato leaf and sage on the palate, rounded off with lively and zesty flavours of citrus orange peel and some crushed mineral and white pepper. All the elements are in the right place and, like all Vie di Romans whites, Piere needs time in the glass to find its centre and minerality. And if you have the patience to give it this, then it's great. SUPERIORE.DE

“Vie di Romans” Chardonnay Friuli Isonzo DOC 2022
Warm, rich golden yellow colour. A rich bouquet of pretty white and yellow flowers, layers of apricot, pear and melon. On the palate, a rich texture, a certain opulence and beautiful intensity, with hints of spices and almonds, all framed by a virile acidity that leads this work of art into a long, furious finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"A seductive bouquet of honeyed florals, almond custard, lemon curds and chamomile makes the 2022 Chardonnay Vie di Romans impossible to ignore. This is deeply textural, nearly oily and weighty in feel, yet still perfectly refined, with a saline mineral tinge up front that nicely balances its core of ripe orchard fruits. The 2022 cleans up beautifully, with a citrus concentration and hints of tropical melon that linger incredibly long as a bump of residual acidity maintains a lovely freshness. This is a fantastic effort." Vinous

Pale copper colour with amber and salmon hues, the result of prolonged maceration on the skins of the Pinot Grigio grapes (Ramato). Straightforward, precise nose of white stone fruit, sweet spices and vanilla. Clearly structured and forward on the palate with tart berry fruit, light cherries, wild mint and a hint of bitter almond. A salty nuance on the finish, light-footed, almost weightless and very animating. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright light orange colour with a sparkling reflex. Elegant and inviting nose of fine precious wood, hazelnuts, some apricots, plus orange zest and light spice. Great freshness on the palate, underpinned by a fine creaminess and substance, albeit somewhat alcoholic in the centre, rich and long. Has a lot of character." Falstaff
"The Pinot Grigio Dessimis 2022 has a copper-orange colour in the glass and a delicate floral note. Dried apricots, almond paste, peaches and a hint of mint characterise its bouquet. On the palate, it is soft and enveloping, almost juicy, with ripe fruit balanced by lively acidity and a noticeable minerality. The 2022 finishes long, colourful and lightly structured, with lingering hints of nectarine and spice." Vinous

“Dut' un” Bianco Venezia Giulia IGT 2021
Dut' un is a full-bodied cuvée of Chardonnay and Sauvignon with generous texture, built high with layers of orchard fruit, lime, apricot, cooked pear, spice, custard and lemon mousse. It is a great wine that relies on its geographical provenance and the vineyard's well-draining limestone-clay soils for its flavour intensity and purity. The 8-month maturation on the lees gives it its creamy character and firm structure. For all its fruitiness and complexity, it has a distinct minerality and freshness that will allow it to mature wonderfully. SUPERIORE.DE
"Intense, shiny light gold colour. Great nose of ripe pineapple, citrus fruit, some tangerine, flint, wet stone. Great juiciness and compact core on the palate, acidity and fruit are well balanced, powerful, slightly phenolic finish, can age for a long time." Falstaff

“I Climat” Selezione Chardonnay Friuli Isonzo DOC 2017 · 6 bottles in OWC
For more than thirty years, Vie di Romans has been vinifying only its own grapes in order to respect and express the respective vineyards of origin. The crus "Piere", "Vieris", "Vie di Romans", "Ciampagnis", "Dessimis" and others embody the sensory quintessence of their grapes of origin, each with its own recognisable and enduring historical character.
With the ambitious project "I Climat" (traditional Burgundian term), Gianfranco Gallo wants to present the terroir expression of his wines in the truest and most authentic way. Each individual terroir offers a certain variability: it is up to the winemaker to decide whether to capture its unique essence or to use it in a more general way.
At Vie di Romans, the Chardonnay variety was chosen because it has an innate, genetic ability to connect in a very noticeable way with the different soil-climate complexes in which it grows. The six different Climat wines come from specific Chardonnay parcels within the two crus vineyards, Vie di Romans and Ciampagnis, and contain the names or name components of the families who farmed these vineyards in the distant past - Nuts, Goss, Curie, Glesie, Boghis and Cortesar. In the past, local properties were very parcelled out and, unlike today, were farmed by the same family or owner for generations.
It is important to mention that uniform viticulture and vinification practices were used in the vinification of all six site Chardonnays, so that no external factor could compromise the unique and natural expression. Each vintage (since the beginning of 2015) is the result of 18 months of "elevage sur lie" followed by two years of bottle ageing. The extended maturation period was deliberately chosen to allow the wine to develop the authentic sensory expression that a specific soil-climate unit is capable of producing.
Gianfranco Gallo is convinced that the true identity of a wine and the terroir that produces it only emerges through longevity, because it is only through this process that the wine discovers its inner balance, stability and unmistakable identity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Great wines are made in great terroirs. The fundamental element is always the land." This is what Gianfranco Gallo likes to tell us in conversation. The Friulian winemaker is dedicated to producing exceptional site wines that combine the unique terroir and the particularities of the grape variety in the wine glass. Like hardly any other winery, his Vie di Romans operation stands for continuous top quality and has long been considered one of the flagship companies of the Italian wine scene.
Gianfranco took over the estate from his father in 1978 and carried out a radical restructuring of the vineyards in the years that followed. In order to express the characteristic growing zones as clearly as possible, it was decided to have the subsoil, surface and microclimate of the individual vineyards scientifically studied. The current production philosophy is thus based on the awareness that the vineyards have small but very important differences, which are ultimately reflected in the respective cru wines.
On 60 hectares, the predominantly white varieties of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Malvasia Istriana, Friulano and Riesling Renano mature, as well as other red grape varieties. The extensive vineyard is characterized by clay and ferruginous soils with alluvial limestone and sandstone, which do not produce high yields. Gianfranco's rigorous natural viticulture takes 650 to 750 hours of work per hectare each year.
The extreme attention to terroir results in each Vie di Romans wine being labeled with the name of the grape variety and the name of the vineyard of origin. The single-varietal wines and refined cuvées are deliberately released two years after the harvest, at the ideal time for ripening, highlighting the best characteristics of the diverse Isonzo DOC growing area, located right on the Slovenian border.
The name of the winery translates as "Road of the Romans" and refers to a road that in Roman times connected the two most important cities of Friuli, Aquileia and Cividale del Friuli. It winds through the village of Mariano del Friuli, past Gianfranco's winery and its carefully tended vineyards. The 40 harvests that the winemaker has now had are characterized by a wide range of wines that are full of character, long-lived and, above all, expressive.
Gianfranco Gallo and his team have more than earned their cult status and remain an unmistakable guarantee of quality to this day. SUPERIORE.DE
