“When We Dance” Chianti DOCG 2024
"When We Dance" – sting's 1994 ballad is about a love that makes angels hide their wings. The eponymous Chianti is more down-to-earth, but no less seductive: a classic triad of Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino, as Tuscany has known it for centuries. “Roxanne” Bianco Toscana IGT 2024
Wife of Alexander the Great, unrequited love of Cyrano de Bergerac – and, in 1978, the red lantern in Paris' red light district that inspired Sting to write one of the most iconic songs in rock history - that's Roxanne. The Bianco of the same name has a softer glow, but is no less seductive. 85% Vermentino forms the aromatic backbone, complemented by Chardonnay from the Maremma. Hand-picked between mid-August and early September, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, five months maturation on the fine lees.

!["Message in a Bottle" Rosso Toscana IGT 2024]()
“Message in a Bottle” Rosso Toscana IGT 2024
In 1979, Sting sent a desperate message to the world with The Police – and landed a global hit. The red message in a bottle from Tuscany conveys a different message: that modern Tuscan red wine can combine tradition and cosmopolitanism. 70% Sangiovese forms the basis, supplemented by 15% each of Syrah and Merlot – a cuvée in the spirit of the Super Tuscans, but without their price ambitions. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented for seven to eight days at a controlled temperature and matured for twelve months in French barriques.

“New Day” Rosato Toscana IGT 2025
A new day, a new vintage – and the first wine of the year to leave the winery each year. While the red wines are still slumbering in their barrels, "New Day" already brings the message of the new 2025 vintage: freshness, joie de vivre and anticipation of what is to come. 100% Sangiovese, harvested by hand and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place at a low temperature in stainless steel, followed by a few months of ageing on the fine lees.

“Baci Sulla Bocca” Vermentino Toscana IGT 2024
A photo from 1955 adorns the bottle: Elliott Erwitt's "California Kiss", two lovers in the mirror of a car. When Trudie Styler tasted the first sip of this Vermentino, she spontaneously found the name – "like a kiss on the lips". The fact that the wine was released in March 2021, when the world was hungry for closeness, lends it additional poetry. Incidentally, it is the first white wine that Riccardo Cotarella vinified for Il Palagio – a tribute to Trudie's love of elegant Bianchi. The hand-picked Vermentino grapes ferment at a controlled temperature in stainless steel, and a short maturation period preserves the vibrant freshness.

!["Sister Moon" Rosso di Toscana IGT 2020]()
“Sister Moon” Rosso di Toscana IGT 2020
The story begins with a drunk and Shakespeare. When a staggering reveller once pestered Sting – "How beautiful is the moon?" –the musician replied with a verse from sonnet 130: "My mistress's eyes are nothing like the sun." The man was satisfied and disappeared into the darkness. This nocturnal encounter gave rise to a song dedicated to all moon addicts in 1987 – "for the lunatics everywhere, for all those whose sanity is dependent on the phases of the moon." It seems only logical that this title of all things should become Il Palagio's flagship: the winery's first great Supertuscan also unfolds its magic in the twilight between day and night. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon merge in equal parts – tuscan tradition meets international elegance without one side dominating. The biodynamically cultivated vines on the hills of Figline Valdarno provide the foundation; fifteen to eighteen months in new French barriques lend depth and polish.

!["Sacred Love" Rosso Toscana IGT 2021]()
“Sacred Love” Rosso Toscana IGT 2021
On 11 September 2001, a concert was to take place in the hills of Figline Valdarno. Sting was standing on the stage of his Tuscan villa when the news arrived from New York. He played anyway – not as entertainment, but as therapy. That evening, the feeling of emptiness and the search for meaning gave rise to an album two years later: "Sacred Love", a meditation on love as the only answer to a world in chaos. "We have to go back to that basic thing," said Sting at the time, "mother love, father love, husband love, wife love, child love – because when you don't have that, all hell breaks loose."

!["Every little thing she does is magic" Vino Spumante Rosé (2022) brut]()
“Every little thing she does is magic” Vino Spumante Rosé (2022) brut
1976: A young man called Gordon Sumner sits in a small flat in Newcastle, with no money, no prospects, nothing but an acoustic guitar and a dream. He writes a song about the magic that emanates from a woman – about those small gestures that enchant the everyday. When he later plays the song to his future bandmates, they wave it off: too soft, too gentle for the rough punk sound that London is currently celebrating. The song goes into the drawer. Five years later, when The Police had long since become global stars, they brought it out again. "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" becomes a number one hit in four countries and wins the Ivor Novello Award.

Figline-Valdarno is not necessarily the postcard idyll in Tuscany that we all have in mind. This only begins a few kilometres to the south-west behind the next range of hills of the Colli Fiorentini. The two villages, which have grown together, are more like the supply centre of the northern Chianti region. You can find everything here. From toothbrushes to tractors. Industry, DIY stores, warehouses, car dealerships and every supermarket chain has a branch here.
You wouldn't buy a winery here? Twenty years ago, married couple Trudie Styler and Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, better known as Sting, bought a 16th century villa here as a summer residence. The idea of using the estate for private use only and "to provide the family with a healthy, natural environment and wholesome food" has now become much more than that. After all, around 350 hectares of hilly land with olive groves, fruit, fields, meadows and vineyards is not exactly small, even with six children. The estate is therefore partly open to visitors and even has a farm shop where you can buy everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to their own salami and wine. The olive oil, jams and excellent home-made honey are now even available at Harrods in London.
Giovanni Sani is now the estate manager of the winery. He is responsible for the day-to-day running of Il Palagio and coordinates the work in the vineyard and cellar, closely connected to the land and its history. His role combines in-depth expertise with a precise understanding of the terroir. Paolo Cacíorgna gained experience as an oenologist in France and California, but his heart belongs to his homeland, Tuscany. He is in charge of Il Palagio's wine production, which is based on the Steiner method. And in 2020, Riccardo Cotarella, arguably Italy's most famous oenologist, joined the team. A top-class team, then, that guarantees authentic wines of the highest quality.
Many of the long-established wine producers have always bought grapes from the higher hills south of Florence. This is because here, at up to 500 metres above sea level, there is poorer, stonier soil and also a good water supply. The nearby Arno valley always brings a fresh breeze and cooler nights. This gives the grapes a fine flavour, juicy fruit and good acidity.
The focus is of course on Sangiovese, which is practically pure in classic Chianti and is only refined with very few local grape varieties such as Canaiolo and Colorino. A small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also cultivated, which support the Sangiovese in the top wine "Sister Moon". Il Palagio has won many awards in recent years, such as the Winespectator TOP100, and made it into the small group of award-winning wines in the exclusive "Opera Wine" competition at the annual VinItaly wine fair. Trebbiano, Vermentino and Sauvignon round off the range of grape varieties in the white wine segment.
The wines are fermented and stored in the restored historic vaulted cellar. Mainly in old large wooden barrels made from Slavonian oak and to a lesser extent in barriques made from French wood. Look forward with us to these wonderfully typical and honest wines from Tuscany, which combine the glamour factor of the estate owner with outstanding qualities. SUPERIORE.DE
