Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2020
Le Ragnaie's harmonious and graceful Rosso di Montalcino captivates with its multi-layered bouquet of sour cherries and musk, which deepens further with crushed dried roses, minty herbs and a pinch of savoury spice. Silky and smooth on the palate, but its energy and tension remain high throughout. Wild strawberries with sweet tannins continue to build towards the end. The wine is elegant and feminine and finishes classically dry and balanced with mineral notes and a hint of liquorice that linger for a long time. SUPERIORE.DE
"Palish ruby. Lifted sour-cherry and cranberry fruit with an exotic spice note. Elegant, nervy red fruit that dances over the palate." Jancis Robinson
"The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino is intense, with a burst of crushed rocks and exotic spice giving way to medicinal black cherries. This is velvety and pliant, with a dense wave of mineral-laden wild berry fruit lifted by brisk acidity. It finishes savory and with tension, leaving a tug of primary concentration to linger. Unlike most 2020s Le Ragnaie has captured much more complexity and depth." Vinous

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2017
The fruit for this wine comes from four unique sites at different altitudes, all in different parts of the appellation. Le Ragnaies Brunello 2017 is a tour de force of Sangiovese that runs the entire continuum of Sangiovese. It begins auspiciously with wild cherry, later unfolding pressed blue flowers, spices and potting soil. In addition to these typical tones, there are also cherry, cassis and other classic Sangiovese aromas, followed by notes of dried mint and Mediterranean herbs in the impressive final. The lasting impression of this very special Brunello is its brilliance and purity, which inspire us every year, especially in the wines of Le Ragnaie. SUPERIORE.DE
"Mid ruby with orange tinges. Perfumed, cool nose that is not at all reminiscent of the torrid vintage 2017 was. Succulent and elegant on the palate but with obvious concentration and a firm layer of tannins, which make their mark, but the perfumed fruit keeps up on the finish." Jancis Robinson
"Bright ruby red. In the nose of cherries, raspberries, great integrated wood, fine spice. On the palate with pithy, red berry fruit, spans a fine arc, slightly salty final." Falstaff
"Le Ragnaie's 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is a delicate and graceful expression that carefully unfolds to reveal wild berries, dried lilac and beautiful earthy tones. It belongs to that enviable school of Brunello that prioritises tradition, elegance and purity. These are the fundamental qualities of a great Sangiovese, but they are not achieved by all. The identity of Le Ragnaie is closely linked to these efforts. Notes of dried mint or Mediterranean herbs emerge on the finish." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018
This Brunello is the most accessible wine in the top-class Le Ragnaie portfolio every year. Elegant and perfumed with floral aromas reminiscent of blue flowers and wild roses. Alongside these delicate tones are cherry, cassis and other classic flavours of Sangiovese. This wine is a blend of fruit from different vineyard sites with high and low altitudes and is a safe bet every year. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright and juicy, this red wine shows flavours of cherries, strawberries, flowers and minerals. It is firmly structured and has a crisp texture that unfolds on the tangy finish. It just needs time to integrate." Wine Spectator
"Spicy herbs, crushed rock, nuances of cedar wood and dried strawberries - all this can be found when the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino opens in the glass. It flows effortlessly across the palate, round and supple, guided by a juicy acidity, with a depth of tart wild berries, contrasted by a pretty inner sweetness. The 2018 builds on purity and finishes incredibly fresh and only slightly tannic, while hints of mint and sour cherry slowly fade. This Brunello, which is already looking very good, only needs a short stay in the cellar to fully develop. Remarkably, all the fruit from Riccardo Campinoti's Fornace vineyard in Castelnuovo dell'Abate was used to support the 2018 Brunello." Vinous
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is delicate and fine with aromas of wild cherry, liquorice, grilled herb and pressed violet. On the palate, it is more powerful with medium concentration, beautiful freshness and silky tannins. The fine tannins stand out here, as does the low alcohol content. In a vintage that has consistently very high alcohol levels, Le Ragnaie is to be congratulated for maintaining a moderate alcohol content of 13.5 %." Wine Advocate
"On the nose, aromas of soy sauce, stone, pepper, mixed herbs and black plum swirl together to create a savory, salty, cool sensation, like a late fall sea breeze. The palate leans into the tart fruit, with black cherries, blackberries and plum, before a bitter, herbaceous finish. Round, smooth tannins create a silken mouthfeel." Wine Enthusiast

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019
As every year, the grapes for Riccardo Campinoti's "white label" come from the scattered vineyards of Le Ragnaie, making the wine a precise and classic snapshot of the diverse Montalcino area and the wonderful 2019 vintage: violets and Mediterranean scrub meet wild strawberries, stones and a fascinating earthiness. It also epitomises the vibrancy of Sangiovese, which initially appears medium-bodied and then gains strength as firm, dusty tannins wrap themselves around a tangy core. The finish is energetic and uplifting - an elegantly moulded Brunello with impeccable symmetry and purity of fruit. As with the estate's single-vineyard bottlings, fermentation is spontaneous, maceration lasts 45 to 50 days and ageing takes place in large Slavonian oak barrels. SUPERIORE.DE
"Almost medium ruby red colour. A lively, concentrated nose of fragrant red fruit. A real upgrade on the Rosso, more complex and with great depth without losing its elegance. Juicy, almost racy and pure on the finish with fine tannins that emphasise the fruit." Jancis Robinson
"The sum of the fruit from different plots in cooler and warmer regions reveals the characteristic tautness of Le Ragnaie. Delicately scented, the nose hints at game and then turns to brushwood, rose hips and alpine flowers. The core of cranberries and redcurrants is medium-bodied and firmly anchored. Bright acidity and firm, crisp tannins provide a solid framework." Decanter
"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino opens slowly in the glass, dusty and floral, with a depth of dark red fruits and exotic spices. It is silky smooth with medium body and lively acidity driving the tart wild berries and mineral tones, while rosy florals race across the palate. It finishes with admirable length and concentration. Crisp tannins frame the experience without slowing down the momentum. The 2019 is a wonderful result of the vintage and the style of the house. Don't let it pass you by." Vinous
"The Brunello di Montalcino 2019 shows delicate aromas of blue flowers, redcurrants, cranberries and floral earth. It has all the basic components of a classic Sangiovese. The fruit comes from the estate's vineyards, which are located at an altitude of 200 to 600 metres above sea level, the highest point of the appellation. The palate is spoilt with baking spices and silky, almost glossy tannins. The mouthfeel is very fine. This is a very Burgundian Brunello." Wine Advocate
"This red features a core of cherry and strawberry fruit, along with leafy underbrush and rosemary accents. Sinewy tannins take over midpalate, vying for attention with the fruit on the lingering, mineral-tinged aftertaste, yet this is elegant and balanced overall." Wine Spectator

Brunello di Montalcino “Passo del Lume Spento” DOCG 2017
With the 2017 vintage, the third single-vineyard Brunello Le Ragnaies celebrates its debut. Only 3,000 bottles of this wine from Montalcino's highest vineyard will be bottled. The choice of the vineyard, situated over 600 metres above sea level, is also due to climate change, where winemakers are increasingly looking for cooler sites for Sangiovese - and the result is again a Brunello of the absolute special class: on the nose, leather, tobacco, small red berries and a surprisingly fresh, clearly mineral note. The wine, although it appears very graceful and bright, is punchy and long. Its grippy tannins and finely knit acidity underline our impression that this wine still has a long life ahead of it. SUPERIORE.DE
"Lustrous and just mid ruby with orange tinges. Lots of concentration and yet not rich. Deep cherry aroma. Surprisingly high in acidity but melts into the fruit on the finish, which is layered with powdery tannins. Nervy and just escapes being tart, with long perfumed fruit." Jancis Robinson
"The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Lume Spento opens with a delicate bouquet of sweet herbs and tobacco, incredibly airy yet spicy and a little exotic, while a hint of mineral grit fills the glass. It is silky smooth and tasty, with a pure presentation of wild berries, enlivened by bright acidity and a salty note. The finish is lean and mineral, with grippy tannins balanced by a hint of sour citrus. The Passo del Lume Spento comes from a vineyard that, according to Riccardo Campinoti, is currently the highest Brunello in the region at 621 metres. It found a very nice balance in the 2017 vintage." Vinous
"From a single vineyard located on a sandstone plateau at an altitude of 621 metres, this first release of Passo del Lume Spento is of particular importance, not only for Le Ragnaie but for the entire region, especially because it coincides with the red-hot 2017 vintage. A harbinger of things to come? It shows fresh aromas of lavender and fennel with warm, fragrant earth and a subtle smoky note. Medium-bodied, crisp and sinewy, it tastes of red berries pressed from rocky soil, accompanied by tangy acidity." Decanter
"Le Ragnaie's Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Lume Spento 2017 draws its fruit from one of the appellation's highest sites, the "Pass of the extinguished lantern", as the wine is called in English. It is part of a general trend that Montalcino winemakers seem to be looking for cooler, higher altitude sites for Sangiovese. This wine proves beyond doubt that altitude is the key to elegance in warm years. This Brunello is particularly bright, powerful and energetic." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino “Casanovina Montosoli” DOCG 2017
Since the 2015 vintage, Le Ragnaie has been vinifying another single-vineyard Brunello, which comes from the famous Montosoli vineyard and therefore also bears the black label. With the 2017 vintage, only just under 3,000 bottles come onto the market, and we are pleased that we were able to obtain at least some of them. On the nose, graceful tones of wild cherry, pressed blueberries and small blue violets growing deep in the forest. The aromas are more vertical, with cola and medicinal tones rising straight from the top. Compact and lean on the palate, with a long, medium-light persistence that leaves a precise and sharply drawn trail of fruit flavours. This expression and class can only be found in the wines of the Montosoli vineyard and this finessed wine is a real delight! SUPERIORE.DE
"Multi-layered, smoky bouquet with wild forest berries, cherry, earthy mineral notes, wet stone and damp tobacco. This has something of undergrowth and truffle, which continues on the finely honed palate, along with orange zest and ripe fruit." Weinwisser
"Bright garnet red with a fine shimmer. Exciting nose, opens with notes of liquorice, then dried plums and pickled cherry, some tobacco, everything already quite ripe, but actually just at the right point. On the palate, dense tannins determine the course, lots of plum, emphatically grippy in the final." Falstaff
"The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli lifts up with a smoky display of cherries and strawberries, wild herbs and wet stone. It evolves further with time in the glass, adding mineral-laden soil and hints of fresh tobacco. This is a pure, round expression of Montosoli, with a pleasant inner sweetness and staining red fruits. It tapers off potent and long, with a web of fine tannins that coat the cheeks, as hints of balsamic spice slowly taper off. Give this feisty expression of the 2017 vintage a few years of cellaring to come fully into focus." Vinous
"Located directly beside the cellar of the historic Baricci estate, Le Ragnaie’s Montosoli holding is a 1ha, east-facing plot at 300 metres above sea level. It impresses immediately, exhibiting enormous depth on the nose. Plums, violets and earthy truffle notes are backlit by bright cherry. The palate brings in nuances of orange and tar, while linear tannins are tightly wound and sandy in texture. The fruit is plentiful without being heavy, overripe or obvious. Finishing long and savoury this is one of the wines of the vintage." Decanter

Brunello di Montalcino “Vecchie Vigne” DOCG 2017
The first Brunello of the estate's three Black Label vineyard editions comes from 60-year-old vines that grow at an altitude of over 600 metres. Many years ago, Le Ragnaie decided against bottling a Riserva with this vineyard-by-vineyard vinification; instead, it consistently relies on the terroir diversity of its vineyards. Of all three vineyards, Vecchie Vigne is the most classic wine with a pronounced concentration and personality. Wild berries, blue flowers, balsamic herbs and crushed stone emerge intensely on the nose. On the palate, it is firm, powerful and crisp, revealing dark fruits, roses, spices and baked clay after initial reticence. The wine develops rapidly in the glass and reveals its depth and length only after quite some time, and we are very curious to see how it will develop over the next few years. SUPERIORE.DE
"Lustrous ruby with a bricky rim. Brooding, deep and with minerally hints, but still a little closed on the nose. Fantastic richness on the palate but without being heavy; richly tannic but fits the whole. Closes up, so there is much more to come. Signature elegance throughout." Jancis Robinson
"Bright, intense ruby-violet. Opens on the nose with notes of ripe plums, wild raspberries and some spicy chestnut honey. Lots of fresh fruit on the palate, fresh, perceptible acidity, gives good tension, full pressure on the final." Falstaff
"The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie VV is vibrant with wild herbs, gravel and dusty strawberries in an airy and sweetly spiced entry. Ripe cherries and berries unfold on the palate, while floral notes arch over the medium-bodied framework. A fantastic blend of saline minerals and acidity saturates over time, giving way to a layer of primary concentration and fine tannins that linger long. The 2017 has excellent balance and freshness for the vintage, but will require patience to be fully appreciated." Vinous
"The oldest vines of Le Ragnaie were planted in 1968 and are situated at an altitude of 600 metres with a warm south-west exposure. In 2017, it seems to have more of everything. You can almost smell the warmth, while wild blackcurrants and tar waft from the glass. This wine is more powerful than the estate's other single vineyard bottlings, although the tannins still show their characteristic austerity. Just a hint of dryness shines through, but there is enough fruit concentration to carry this wine as it takes on a more graceful pace." Decanter
"The Le Ragnaie 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V. V., with fruit from 50-year-old vines, is one of three special black label selections produced by this winery. Instead of a Riserva programme, Le Ragnaie focuses on territorial identity and single vineyard expressions. This pretty wine shows the distinct concentration that comes from the old vines, but which is also the result of the hot growing season. Dark fruits, roses, spices and baked clay can be found in this medium to full-bodied Brunello. Production is 3,800 bottles." Wine Advocate

"Beautiful notes of wild strawberries, cedar spice and crushed stones unfold in the glass. On the palate, it glides along smoothly yet refined, with a lovely inner sweetness and brilliant acidity providing gravitas as the mineral red fruits slowly saturate. The 2018 finishes remarkably fresh yet with admirable length and power as notes of sour cherry and sage slowly fade away. What a treasure. The Passo del Lume Spento is a unique wine, based more on energy than power and is undoubtedly one of the outstanding wines of the vintage." Vinous
"The Le Ragnaie 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Lume Spento is very pretty in this vintage with tart cherry and flavours of cola, garden herbs, blue flowers and blood orange. This is usually my favourite of the three single vineyard wines from this estate. I welcome the relatively low alcohol content of 13.5%, which allows more of the wine to be savoured in one sitting. The tannins melt gently across the palate." Wine Advocate
"On the nose, aromas of blood orange, black pepper, balsamic and damp soil swirl together before subtler notes of rose petals and mint provide levity and freshness. Strawberry and cherry sweetness on the palate meet more blood orange and a powerful saline streak for a balanced, cohesive feel, before dense tannins usher in a warming finish." Wine Enthusiast

"A fluid, iron and tobacco-coloured red wine with a core of cherry and blackcurrant flavours surrounded by a firm, well-integrated structure. The finish has earthy and savoury accents of Mediterranean scrub. Shows excellent harmony and finesse." Wine Spectator
"To preserve freshness, Riccardo Campinoti bottled all his Brunello a full year earlier than usual and reduced time in wood from 36 to 30 months. Nevertheless, Casanovina is even more closed than when I tried it a year ago, right after bottling. Of Le Ragnaie’s four new releases, this is the most complete and boasts the ripest, most dignified tannins, although they are still firm. Aromas are redolent of red berries, violet, fennel and lilac. It will need time to reveal its full potential, but for now, crunchy fruit and steely acidity distinguish the mineral-led, energetic palate." Decanter
"The Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli 2018 is one of three single-vineyard wines released by Le Ragnaie. It displays fresh and rich fruit flavours of dark cherries, pressed blueberries and mild spice. You can feel the soft richness of the ripe fruit. There is also a pronounced mineral signature with chalky gravel, which contributes to the dryness and powdery tannins of this wine. Despite all this, a sweet cherry note lingers on the finish. It needs a few more years to develop." Wine Advocate
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli is a sleeping giant slowly coming to life, with a bouquet of dusty roses and brown spices over a core of dried black cherries. The palate is like crushed velvet, but surprisingly light and graceful, while dark red fruits and mineral tones soak the senses in primary concentration and linger with a hint of balsamic herbs. The fine tannins linger in beautiful contrast to the crackling residual acidity, giving the impression of youthful structure and balance. There is so much inner beauty here, but it will take years for the 2018 to fully come into its own." Vinous

Brunello di Montalcino “Passo del Lume Spento” DOCG 2019
Until the regulations were changed in 2016, 600 metres was the upper limit for Brunello di Montalcino. The grapes for Passo del Lume Spento come from a single vineyard located on a sandstone plateau at 621 metres above sea level. It displays fresh aromas of lavender and fennel with warm, fragrant earth and a subtle smoky note. The medium-bodied, crisp and sinewy wine tastes of red berries pressed from rocky earth, accompanied by tangy acidity and remarkable freshness. The finish is still primary and mineral, with crisp tannins that give this single-vineyard cru a remarkable bite and great ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"Shiny and straight medium ruby red. Concentrated and refined on the nose. Multi-layered. Lots of juicy red fruit, underpinned with super-fine, long tannins. Super-elegant, mineral and long." Jancis Robinson
"A lacy, translucent version, this red displays cherry, plum, earth, underbrush and iron flavors, with a burly presence of tannins guarding the finish. Racy for the vintage, with a strong grip on the salty aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Lume Spento opens with a mentholated freshness, while crushed stone and minty herbs complicate dusty, dried strawberries. The Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Spento has a juicy character and is incredibly fresh. It shows its minerality in the foreground, while a tart wave of wild berries descends on the palate. The finish is exciting, powerful and primary, with a layer of fine-grained tannins balanced by a hint of residual acidity. This is a spice bomb that nevertheless has the energy to balance." Vinous
"Campinoti's highest single-vineyard bottling comes from a one-hectare plot planted in 2011 at an altitude of 621 metres. The third release as a Brunello, reaching its peak with the 2019 vintage. The aromas are still restrained, but in the mouth, scents of white flowers and roses unfold against a background of sour cherry and pomegranate. The mouth-cleansing tannins are straightforward and the lively acidity drives the wine across the palate. It is lean but not bony and has enough flesh to harmonise the structure. A truly exciting wine with a sinewy, chiselled personality." Decanter
"This wine kisses the sky with fruit from vines planted in 2012 at the highest point of the appellation. This is a wine to keep an eye on in the future, especially as these vines age. The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Lume Spento has a fine and direct bouquet with vibrant red fruits, cranberries, pressed rose and rosemary flowers. The fruit and floral components are very pronounced, and the earthiness that we find in the other wines is not as pronounced. Instead, it is mineral and salty. Crisp fruit and powdery tannins make for a very long and polished finish with an alcohol content of 13.5 %. This wine is fluid and more of a shape-shifter." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino Petroso is only produced in the best years and in an extremely limited quantity - just 1,200 bottles of the 2019 vintage will be released onto the market. The exciting bouquet combines rich dark fruits with savoury spices, sage and violets to create a captivating spectacle. Soft and enveloping on the palate, initially quite feminine, with a mix of vibrant acids and minerals giving way to wild berries and pretty inner flowers. This cool, balanced and savoury wine already shows enormous purity and finesse when young, but with its grippy tannins it definitely needs more years to develop fully. With such a limited production, it is a shame that more people will not be able to enjoy this exceptionally beautiful Brunello. SUPERIORE.DE
"Brilliant and just medium ruby red. A little richer on the nose than the Passo del Lume Spento. Perfumed raspberry and cherry with hints of stone. On the palate, it is very elegant and heavy, with fragrant fruit and firm but polished tannins that linger until the end." Jancis Robinson
"This is juicy and expressive, displaying cherry, raspberry, mineral and wild herb flavors. Fresh and harmonious, with bright acidity and well-integrated tannins providing support, this is still a bit tight on the finish, but everything is in the right place." Wine Spectator
"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Petroso offers a dark, rich, inviting blend of black raspberry, mint leaf and worn leather. Silky smooth and elegant to the touch, it flows easily across the palate, presenting crisp red berry fruit enlivened by lively acidity. A wall of grippy tannins lingers as the 2019 rejuvenates primly and intensely, promising many years of further development. I expect the Petroso to gain weight over time, which will round out this otherwise great wine. The potential here is incredibly great." Vinous
"The character of this wine is more approachable and open. The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Petroso is less ethereal and more grounded, with an obvious delivery of fruit (and more primary intensity) framed by caramel, light tobacco leaf, redcurrant, cherry and wild plum. An herbal element also emerges, with white pepper and something fun reminiscent of cashew celery root. The mouthfeel leans towards chalk, and there's a hint of minerality with wet limestone or rose quartz. The tannins are controlled, the texture is medium weight and the finish is very elegant. These qualities give this wine great potential." Wine Advocate

"There is nothing higher than this. We are on the top of the hill of Montalcino with a view to the southwest," enthuses winery owner Riccardo Campinoti in conversation as he talks about his small operation Le Ragnaie . In recent years, the great winemaker has demonstrated his skill for producing spectacular Brunello wines from the most diverse altitudes of Montalcino.
"Our lowest vineyard Fornace is at 180 metres in Castelnuovo and our highest is on the hilltop of Montalcino at 621 metres," Riccardo adds. The altitude of his vineyards are the key to the multi-layered aromas of Sangiovese and a balanced, fresh acidity - despite a long ripening period. But good sites alone do not make good wines, which is why Riccardo is celebrated in Montalcino above all for his oenological talent.
Together with his wife Jennifer, the wine enthusiast fulfilled his dream of owning his own Tuscan winery in 2002 and named the estate Le Ragnaie, located high up in Montalcino. This name is derived from the Italian word for spider's web (Ragnatela), because the traditional bird-catching nets that can be seen on the labels of his wines are visually reminiscent of a spider's web and were stretched from this highest point for bird hunting.
The success story of Le Ragnaie has also been shaped by the early conversion to organic viticulture and by the fact that Riccardo has consciously decided against a marmalade-laden and sometimes somewhat overloaded modern wine style. Instead, his long-lived red wines convince with a fruity-spicy bouquet and an unmistakable freshness, for which he even lets the Sangiovese grapes rest on the skins for up to 90 days to absorb the colour pigments, the tannins and the aromatic components of the grape variety.
Fermentation then takes place in cement barrels and, as is traditionalist, the Sangiovese wines mature slowly in large Slavonian oak vats. Together with his manageable team, Riccardo maintains a strict quality regiment in order to express the fundamentally different vineyard sites in his red wines.
So if you want to be inspired by the taste influence of the higher altitudes, compare the Vigne Vecchie Brunello di Montalcino from the highest and coolest vineyard with its impressive counterpart from the warmer, much lower single-vineyard Fornace in Castelnuovo dell'Abate. Le Ragnaie also produces a wonderfully drinkable Rosso di Montalcino and an outstanding base Brunello that combines the grapes from these two vineyards, both of which any of us would love to have a few bottles of in the cellar.
