• Dolcetto d'Alba DOC 2017

      Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2017

Shiny dark ruby red. Creamy bouquet with delicate hints of dark chocolate and black cherry. Consistent taste with delicate typical bitter notes, black fruits again and a wonderfully fresh knitted fabric of acid and tannin. A perfect and inexpensive introduction to the great wines of Roagna! SUPERIORE.DE

"Pure and elegant, yet not without structure. Rose, cherry and strawberry flavors are accented by light toast and graphite notes, and the finish is taut and long." Wine Spectator

"The 2017 Dolcetto d'Alba is absolutely gorgeous for many reasons, including its freshness (so rare in 2017) and super-classic sense of structure. Pliant, silky and supple, the 2017 exudes personality from the very first taste. Lifted aromatics and bright, red-toned fruit are two of the signatures in this deeply expressive Dolcetto. Quite simply, Luca Roagna takes Dolcetto to a new level with his exquisite, beguiling 2017. Readers should expect an especially nervy, classically austere style. Luca Roagna gave his Dolcetto 100 days on the skins, which is virtually unheard of these days, even for Barbaresco and Barolo! Fruit sources are Pajè and Carso." Vinous

    • Rosso Langhe DOC 2014

      Rosso Langhe DOC 2014

Beautiful Langhe Nebbiolo from Roagnas top Barbaresco locations Pajé and Pira, which gives a good impression of the remarkable style of the winery. Although from vines only about 25 years old, it is a distinctive wine, very old Piedmontese school - with crisp aromas of cherry, tobacco and leather, firm tannin and powerful acidity - and at the end with an inspiring round finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Transparent ruby red. Langhe Rosso is a friendly wine with a nose that resembles a stroll through a delicatessen. A richly filled basket of ripe, dark cherries and blackberries, with almonds, nuts and ethereal notes of white pepper and sandalwood overtones. On the palate the aromas of the nose are reflected. It tempts with silky tannin and deep fruit. The fresh acid train determines the cycle number, supported by fully ripe tannins. A Nebbiolo in this segment really rarely comes across as juicy, joyful and multi-layered."  Sebastian Bordthäuser (Sommelier and wine-journalist)

    • Barbera d'Alba DOC 2014

      Barbera d’Alba DOC 2014

The grapes of this exceptional Barbera come from the Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, where the best Barbaresco in the region usually come from.

Roagnas Barbera d'Alba is a deep, serious wine with an exuberant bouquet of ripe red fruits, flowers, spices and crushed gravel. On the palate clear and precise red currants, cherries, underlaid with a typical Barbera acidity and medium tannin. In its overall composition, it is one of the most fascinating, elegant and at the same time most classical representatives of its kind and requires all the attention and leisure of the taster - the reward follows the foot. • "Derthona" Timorasso Montemarzino 2016

      “Derthona” Timorasso Montemarzino 2016

If you stumble across a vineyard because of fate, you can go on. Luca Roagna did, however, what he had to do. He inherited this old vineyard, which was completely planted with Timorasso, and since he immediately realised that he wanted to do something useful with it, and he was not familiar with this historic grape variety, he asked Walter Massa, who has dedicated himself to this rare variety for decades. And so, after a few years, he succeeded in making a wine out of it that could more than compete with that of his teacher!

Bright, clear straw yellow. In the nose quince, citrus and a potpourri of yellow fruits. Then on the palate this saltiness paired with a well-dosed wood seasoning. The long maceration period gives this great white wine strength and stamina. Fine astringency is paired with a pressure that gives this wine - paired with well-dosed acidity and always very present fruit - the uniqueness that makes it at least as unique as the great whites of the Loire or Burgundy, even in direct comparison. And yet he carries the individual Roagna handwriting: a style that can be found neither in France nor in other parts of Piedmont. And that really means something, because the white wines of this Italian noble region are getting better every year. SUPERIORE.DE

"A mix of floral, pine and petrol aromas give way to peach, apple and almond flavors in this harmonious white. Vibrant and supple in texture, with a long, mouthwatering finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Timorasso Derthona Montemarzino is another compelling white from Luca Roagna. Citrus, floral and savory notes all run through this tightly wound, focused Timorasso from vineyards in Montemarzino." Vinous

    • "Solea" Bianco Langhe DOC 2016

      “Solea” Bianco Langhe DOC 2016

Solea is a white wine, not only in Piedmont there is no second time. Chardonnay and Nebbiolo (white vinified) - this is Luca Roagna's elegant and independent answer to the great white wines of Burgundy. Herbal bouquet with a smoky note, paired with fine citrus, pear and apple notes. Before you forget to take your nose out of the glass, you should indulge in the palate-filling aromas: Yellow fruits, in addition a tender nut-almond note and tender-creamy tones of the truly refined wood insert let this large white dance on the palate, swing and carry it into a grandiose finish. Impatient people enjoy immediately, wise gourmets put a few bottles in a safe place for a few years. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2016 Langhe Solea is a blend of mostly Chardonnay with 20% Nebbiolo (grapes are sourced from the Pira vineyard and are processed off the skins as a white wine). Luca Roagna’s father first made this wine as an experiment in 1988. The two varieties are immediately assembled and fermented as one. In fact, the Chardonnay is harvested at full maturity to add to the pronounced aromatic profile of the wine, and the Nebbiolo is harvested early in order to provide the acidity and crispness. This is a luminous and bright white wine with a very unique and precise aromatic profile—almost exotic I would say—that prizes apricot, preserves lemon, toasted almond and a touch of Moroccan spice." Robert Parker

"Apple, lemon and spice aromas and flavors are supported by juicy structure in this white. Harmonious, yet piquant and even has light tannins that emerge on the finish." Wine Spectator

"From Piedmont comes this intriguing white blend of Chardonnay and Nebbiolo, the latter made as a blanc-de-noir. It’s a heady, nutty wine that’s bold in character but has an undercurrent of freshness and salinity. Two years’ aging in old oak barrels bring a richness and caramel note to the tropical fruit freshness creating delicious balance and tension." Decanter

"The 2016 Solea, a blend of Chardonnay and Nebbiolo (fermented white, with no skin contact) from Roagna's Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto remains one of the most distinctive whites in Piedmont. Silky, nuanced and super-expressive, the 2016 is a very pretty white with attractive apple, peach, stone and floral notes. Drink it over the next few years." Vinous

    • Barbaresco Faset DOCG 2013

      Barbaresco Faset DOCG 2013

"Ruby red with bright reflections. The nose of the 2013 Faset Barbaresco is delightful with a bouquet of floral notes: Mallow, hibiscus and hollyhock are fruity surrounded by cherries and pickled raspberries and spicy complemented by aromas of black pepper, cedar and juniper berries. The red fruit is accompanied by dark aromas and vegetal notes of blackcurrant and blackberry leaves. Initially of subtle kind in the drink until he pulls out the iron fist in the velvet glove. The gentle opening builds up immense pressure with great inner tension on the middle palate. The extract-sweet fruit of cherries and a fine stone tone of sloe blends with marzipan and noble bitter notes of the ripe tannins, which attest to its additional length. The exemplary use of wood sets the scene for exactly what distinguishes a Barbaresco: Concentration with simultaneous lightness and transparency." Sebastian Bordthäuser (Sommelier and wine-journalist)

"The Barbaresco Faset makes its debut in the range in 2013. Intense spice and tobacco notes meld into dark red and cherry fruit in this wonderfully open-knit, expressive Barbaresco. Already quite supple, silky and giving, the 2013 will drink well with minimal cellaring. This is a terrific first vintage from Luca Roagna. Today, the Faset gives the impression it will age at a faster pace than is the norm for Roagna, but, as readers know, these wines can also stay at plateaus of maturity for many years. This small half-hectare plot yielded just 2,000 bottles." Antonio Galloni

"The cherry, floral, leather, earth and tobacco aromas and flavors are beautifully displayed on a lacy texture. Solidly built, with terrific balance and a lingering aftertaste echoing fruit, earth and mineral elements." Wine Spectator

    • Barolo Pira DOCG 2013

      Barolo Pira DOCG 2013

"Bright ruby red. The 2013 Barolo Pira oscillates between fresh fruit and mild spices. Grown on 25-60 year old vines, the flawless cherry fruit is illuminated by ethereal top notes, roasted almonds and juniper berries alternate with rosemary, sour cherries and sloes. The nose defoliates continuously with increasing ventilation and changes like a kaleidoscope. On the palate, the ripe tannins take over and lay the velvety foundation on which the fruit blows to parade, to flow straight-lined and transparent over the Zechers palate with an oriental spiciness. Notes of sandalwood, juniper and frankincense are underpinned by fine cherry notes, the precisely worked acid nerve is perfectly enveloped in the tightly woven tannin and gives it freshness and drinking flow. A wine of uncomplicated distinction with super length. Please get the big glasses out of the closet. Timely decanting is highly recommended." Sebastian Bordthäuser (Sommelier and wine-journalist)

"Haunting aromas and flavors of graphite, macerated cherry, strawberry, rose hip tea and tar are the hallmarks of this complex, vibrant red. Impeccably balanced, fresh and long, with a lingering, minerally aftertaste." Wine Spectator

"The 2013 Barolo Pira is dark and powerful to its core. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2013 is all nerves and muscle. Iron, blood, smoke, cedar, smoke and licorice give the 2013 much of its super-distinctive flavor profile. In the glass, the 2013 is wonderfully deep and exotic, with layers of dimension that open up effortlessly over time. Readers will have to be patient with the 2013, but it is hugely promising. Sadly, prices for the Roagna wines have gone up dramatically in recent years. If there is one wine that readers should absolutely not miss, it is the 2013 Barolo Pira." Antonio Galloni

"The 2013 Barolo Pira sees fruit sourced from a five-hectare plot. The Pira vineyard is Roagna’s home-base parcel and is the biggest single vineyard the family cultivates in the Barolo appellation. Pira is easy to recognize in terms of bouquet, thanks to those distinctive aromas of dried rose petal and balsam herb that lift gently from the bouquet. Due to long maceration times, which are the norm here at Roagna, the wine’s color shows medium intensity, but that color should be fixed and stable over the long haul because any remaining material in suspension has since fallen out, thanks to the slow fermentation process. This wine delivers evident structure and a touch of rawness or naked nerve that underlines the wine’s young age (and, consequently, its long future aging potential). Dark fruit and a touch of sweet spice add volume to the finish." Robert Parker

    • Barolo del Comune del Barolo DOCG 2014

Barolo del Comune del Barolo DOCG 2014

The grapes for this second vintage (only 1,000 bottles!) come from over 50 years old vines from a small vineyard that Luca leased from a friend. In a few years it will carry the addition "Vecchie Vigne", although it would already be entirely appropriate today. By the way, Luca refrains from specifying a location, since this special property has the characteristics of two locations: Rivera and Le Coste.

Long maceration period and fermentation in large oak barrels. The type of this rare wine is elegant and characterized by black fruits, tar, liquorice and forest soil. High-class tannins and a long, silky final round off the picture of an exceptional wine. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sweet spice, tobacco, dried rose petal, orange peel, menthol and pine give the 2014 a distinctly balsamic profile that is hugely appealing. Medium in body, yet potent and classically austere (as these wines tend to be), the 2014 is supremely delicious. The bouquet alone is incredibly enticing. The Barolo del Comune di Barolo is made entirely from a small parcel in the Terlo cru, but Luca Roagna does not own the site, so he prefers to bottle it under the village designation rather than as a vineyard designate. The 2014 is a real overachiever in its peer group for the year. I loved it." Vinous

    About the winemakers
    Roagna
    Piedmont
    Roagna

Origin, terroir, authenticity. Everyone's talking about it - Luca Roagna and his family live it. For this purpose, they have established a splendid 10-point manifesto. The Roagnas cultivate some of the best sites around Barbaresco and Castiglione di Falletto in Barolo. Some of them since 1880, longer than Barbaresco exists as a wine name. Here are "Vecchie Vigne" actually old vines - up to a hundred years old.

Pajé, Montefico, Asili, Faset in Barbareso, La Pira, La Rocca in Barolo and, more recently, Albesani e Gallina in Neive are the top sites that make Piedmont lovers' hearts beat faster. The Crichet Pajé with the distinctive label is the absolute top Barbaresco from the best parcels of the Pajé. The name comes from the Piedmontese dialect and means approximately "Hills of good location". It is the heart of the Pajé, only half a hectare small, facing southwest, open to the river Tanaro, whose radiation soothes the hot summers and cold winters.
