      Bianco Langhe DOC 2018

Piedmontese rarity. Deep straw yellow with green reflections. About 10% white Nebbiolo gives this Chardonnay the ultimate kick to an extraordinary wine. Herbal spice, finely bound wood and delicate smoky notes enveloped by a citrus scent and paired with well-dosed acidity round off the powerful but still highly elegant experience. Great storage potential - this wine gets better every year and is one of our absolute favourites in the Roagna entry level! SUPERIORE.DE

    • Derthona Timorasso Montemarzino 2016

      Derthona Timorasso Montemarzino 2016

If you stumble across a vineyard because of fate, you can go on. Luca Roagna did, however, what he had to do. He inherited this old vineyard, which was completely planted with Timorasso, and since he immediately realised that he wanted to do something useful with it, and he was not familiar with this historic grape variety, he asked Walter Massa, who has dedicated himself to this rare variety for decades. And so, after a few years, he succeeded in making a wine out of it that could more than compete with that of his teacher!

Bright, clear straw yellow. In the nose quince, citrus and a potpourri of yellow fruits. Then on the palate this saltiness paired with a well-dosed wood seasoning. The long maceration period gives this great white wine strength and stamina. Fine astringency is paired with a pressure that gives this wine - paired with well-dosed acidity and always very present fruit - the uniqueness that makes it at least as unique as the great whites of the Loire or Burgundy, even in direct comparison. And yet he carries the individual Roagna handwriting: a style that can be found neither in France nor in other parts of Piedmont. And that really means something, because the white wines of this Italian noble region are getting better every year. SUPERIORE.DE

"A mix of floral, pine and petrol aromas give way to peach, apple and almond flavors in this harmonious white. Vibrant and supple in texture, with a long, mouthwatering finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Timorasso Derthona Montemarzino is another compelling white from Luca Roagna. Citrus, floral and savory notes all run through this tightly wound, focused Timorasso from vineyards in Montemarzino." Vinous

"Pine, petrol, honey and multigrain toast aromas give way to apple and mineral flavors in this multifaceted white. Verges on oily in texture, gaining precision and cut on the lingering aftertaste." Wine Spectator

"The 2017 Timorasso Derthona Montemarzino is absolutely gorgeous. Lemon confit, chamomile, mint, sage, green apple and almond all grace this super-expressive, mid-weight white. The 2017 spent two years in cask. Creamy and inviting, with terrific freshness as well as nuance, Roagna's Timorasso is sublime. You have to taste this wine." Vinous

"The Roagna 2017 Derthona Montemarzino is a pure expression of the Timorasso grape, heralded as one of the most exciting combinations of grape and emerging territory to be found in Italy in recent years. From a hot vintage, this wine is abundant, rich and generous. It shows a luminous golden color with a combination of sweet and tart aromas. For example, there is Calabrian bergamot, orchard fruit and yellow rose. There are dustings of mineral and petrol like you might find in a Riesling. Fruit comes from a one-hectare plot in the Colli Tortonesi with very rocky soils at 400 meters above sea level." Robert Parker

    • "Solea" Bianco Langhe DOC 2017

      “Solea” Bianco Langhe DOC 2017

Solea is a white wine, which is not only in Piedmont no second time. Chardonnay and Nebbiolo (white vinified) - this is from the hand of Luca Roagna an elegant and independent answer to the great white wines of Burgundy. Herbal bouquet with a smoky note, paired with fine citrus, pear and apple notes. Before you forget to take the nose out of the glass, you should indulge in the palate filling aromas: Yellow fruits, along with a delicate nut-almond note and delicate creamy tones of the truly refined wood insert make this great white dance on the palate, swinging and carrying it into a terrific finish. Impatient ones enjoy immediately, clever connoisseurs put a few bottles in a safe place for a few years. SUPERIORE.DE

"Roagna's 2017 Solea is a blend of Chardonnay and Nebbiolo vinified off the skins. Pliant and supple, with terrific depth, the Solea is dominated by varietal Chardonnay notes of tropical fruit, vanillin and butter. More than that, though, the 2017 is impeccably balanced and flat-out delicious. Even though the Nebbiolo portion is done without skin contact, the wine has a good deal of grip." Vinous

"This is a fascinating wine made with mostly Chardonnay (75%) and a smaller part Nebbiolo fermented off the skins as a white wine. Both grapes come from the Pira cru in Castiglione Falletto. The Roagna 2017 Langhe Solea opens to a bright off-gold color with warm-vintage aromas of ripe peach, cantaloupe melon and preserved lemon. There are some sweet aromas of candied almond and butterscotch as well. This is a mid-weight wine with extra tannic grip and power thanks to the Nebbiolo in the blend. You'd do well to pair it with a fatty fish such as salmon or grilled swordfish steak." Robert Parker

Solea is a white wine, not only in Piedmont there is no second time. Herbal bouquet with a smoky note, paired with fine citrus, pear and apple notes. Before you forget to take your nose out of the glass, you should indulge in the palate-filling aromas: Yellow fruits, in addition a tender nut-almond note and tender-creamy tones of the truly refined wood insert let this large white dance on the palate, swing and carry it into a grandiose finish. Impatient people enjoy immediately, wise gourmets put a few bottles in a safe place for a few years. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2016 Langhe Solea is a blend of mostly Chardonnay with 20% Nebbiolo (grapes are sourced from the Pira vineyard and are processed off the skins as a white wine). Luca Roagna’s father first made this wine as an experiment in 1988. The two varieties are immediately assembled and fermented as one. In fact, the Chardonnay is harvested at full maturity to add to the pronounced aromatic profile of the wine, and the Nebbiolo is harvested early in order to provide the acidity and crispness. This is a luminous and bright white wine with a very unique and precise aromatic profile—almost exotic I would say—that prizes apricot, preserves lemon, toasted almond and a touch of Moroccan spice." Robert Parker

"Apple, lemon and spice aromas and flavors are supported by juicy structure in this white. Harmonious, yet piquant and even has light tannins that emerge on the finish." Wine Spectator

"From Piedmont comes this intriguing white blend of Chardonnay and Nebbiolo, the latter made as a blanc-de-noir. It’s a heady, nutty wine that’s bold in character but has an undercurrent of freshness and salinity. Two years’ aging in old oak barrels bring a richness and caramel note to the tropical fruit freshness creating delicious balance and tension." Decanter

"The 2016 Solea, a blend of Chardonnay and Nebbiolo (fermented white, with no skin contact) from Roagna's Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto remains one of the most distinctive whites in Piedmont. Silky, nuanced and super-expressive, the 2016 is a very pretty white with attractive apple, peach, stone and floral notes. Drink it over the next few years." Vinous

    • Barbaresco Faset DOCG 2013

      Barbaresco Faset DOCG 2013

"Ruby red with bright reflections. The nose of the 2013 Faset Barbaresco is delightful with a bouquet of floral notes: Mallow, hibiscus and hollyhock are fruity surrounded by cherries and pickled raspberries and spicy complemented by aromas of black pepper, cedar and juniper berries. The red fruit is accompanied by dark aromas and vegetal notes of blackcurrant and blackberry leaves. Initially of subtle kind in the drink until he pulls out the iron fist in the velvet glove. The gentle opening builds up immense pressure with great inner tension on the middle palate. The extract-sweet fruit of cherries and a fine stone tone of sloe blends with marzipan and noble bitter notes of the ripe tannins, which attest to its additional length. The exemplary use of wood sets the scene for exactly what distinguishes a Barbaresco: Concentration with simultaneous lightness and transparency." Sebastian Bordthäuser (Sommelier and wine-journalist)

"The Barbaresco Faset makes its debut in the range in 2013. Intense spice and tobacco notes meld into dark red and cherry fruit in this wonderfully open-knit, expressive Barbaresco. Already quite supple, silky and giving, the 2013 will drink well with minimal cellaring. This is a terrific first vintage from Luca Roagna. Today, the Faset gives the impression it will age at a faster pace than is the norm for Roagna, but, as readers know, these wines can also stay at plateaus of maturity for many years. This small half-hectare plot yielded just 2,000 bottles." Antonio Galloni

"The cherry, floral, leather, earth and tobacco aromas and flavors are beautifully displayed on a lacy texture. Solidly built, with terrific balance and a lingering aftertaste echoing fruit, earth and mineral elements." Wine Spectator

"The 2014 Barbaresco Faset is laced with sweet red cherry, mint, wild flowers, licorice and orange peel. Soft, and inviting, with lovely inner perfume, the 2014 will drink well with minimal cellaring. This is an especially soft, open-knit style, and yet there is plenty of Nebbiolo persistence and overall grip. The 2014 is a solid debut. It doesn't take much to see where the Faset is likely to go in coming vintages." Vinous

"Expressive, exuding plum, cherry, blood orange, mint, leather and tar flavors. Shows a warm spiciness as this plays out on the long finish. Powerful in the end." Wine Spectator

"The Roagna 2014 Barbaresco Faset reveals a light garnet color and pretty luminosity that shines bright from within. The bouquet is distinguished by floral tones of lilac and pressed lavender, and the fruit tones at the back come into focus with slow intensity, revealing white cherry, wild plum and a touch of sweet apricot. The wine offers a slender and lithe approach that prizes the elegance and timid grace of classically made Nebbiolo." Robert Parker

    • Barolo del Comune del Barolo DOCG 2014

Barolo del Comune del Barolo DOCG 2014

The grapes for this second vintage (only 1,000 bottles!) come from vines more than 50 years old from a small vineyard that Luca has leased from a friend. In a few years he will carry the addition "Vecchie Vigne", although it would already be perfectly appropriate today. Incidentally, Luca does not indicate the location of the vineyard, as this particular plot has the characteristics of two sites: Rivera and Le Coste.

Long maceration and fermentation in large oak barrels. The type of this rare wine is elegant and characterized by black fruits, tar, liquorice and forest soil. High quality tannins and a long, silky final round off the picture of an exceptional wine. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sweet spice, tobacco, dried rose petal, orange peel, menthol and pine give the 2014 a distinctly balsamic profile that is hugely appealing. Medium in body, yet potent and classically austere (as these wines tend to be), the 2014 is supremely delicious. The bouquet alone is incredibly enticing. The Barolo del Comune di Barolo is made entirely from a small parcel in the Terlo cru, but Luca Roagna does not own the site, so he prefers to bottle it under the village designation rather than as a vineyard designate. The 2014 is a real overachiever in its peer group for the year. I loved it." Vinous

"A mix of sweet wood smoke, eucalyptus, mint, plum and iron flavors are the hallmarks of this sinewy red. Persistent, remaining balanced through the lingering aftertaste, this is in it for the long haul." Wine Spectator

"This is the second vintage released, and fruit for this wine comes from the Terlo cru (in the comune of Barolo). The site sees south-facing slopes and measures a mere 0.17-hectares in size (and is owned by Luca Roagna's girlfriend). The 2014 Barolo del Comune di Barolo makes a terrific edition to the family portfolio that lacked a classic, entry-level Barolo, although the potential here is to be more than that. This wine reveals grace and inner poise, with a sweet note of cherry or candied licorice that is followed by spice, smoke and tar. I could see this wine developing in the future to become a single-vineyard expression from Terlo. Production is a mere 1,176 bottles." Robert Parker

    • Barbaresco Albesani DOCG 2014

      Barbaresco Albesani DOCG 2014

Albesani is one of the most delicious Nebbiolo we have ever had in a glass. It is not lacking in anything, in expression and character it is simply magnificent. The fresh bouquet of flowers, chalk, tobacco and cherries is continued on the palate, where a beguilingly silky tannin and aromatic intensity almost rob the senses. A masterpiece from Luca Roagna! SUPERIORE.DE

"Sleek and linear, sporting cherry, eucalyptus, licorice, iron and tea flavors. Intense, but a tad more flesh would buffer the chewy tannins. Long and vibrant on the finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2014 Barbaresco Albesani is frankly on another level relative to the other Barbarescos Luca Roagna has recently added to his range. Explosive in its aromatic intensity and ample on the palate, the Albesani will leave readers who enjoy classically built wines weak at the knees. Everything that makes Nebbiolo so alluring comes through in this stunning Barbaresco. Freshly cut flowers, mint, chalk and sweet red cherries all race through this delicious and very promising Barbaresco. This is just a great expression of Nebbiolo." Vinous

"Drawing its fruit from a leased vineyard in Neive, the Roagna 2014 Barbaresco Albesani opens to a medium ruby color with pretty garnet highlights. The wine is redolent of dark fruit, dried cherry, tilled earth and black licorice. There is much more aromatic intensity here than you might expect given the rather subtle and nuanced appearance the wine makes in the glass. The soils in Albesani are fundamentally calcareous, and these conditions add to the perfumed and fragrant qualities you get here." Robert Parker

    • Barolo Pira DOCG 2014

      Barolo Pira DOCG 2014

"Bright ruby red. Barolo Pira oscillates between fresh fruit and mild spices. Grown on 25-60 year old vines, the flawless cherry fruit is illuminated by ethereal top notes, roasted almonds and juniper berries alternate with rosemary, sour cherries and sloes. The nose continuously unfolds and changes like a kaleidoscope with increasing aeration. On the palate, the ripe tannins take over and lay the velvety foundation on which the fruit blows into a parade, flowing straight and transparent over the drinker's palate with oriental-looking spice. Notes of sandalwood, juniper and frankincense are underscored by fine cherry notes, the precisely worked acid nerve is perfectly enveloped by the tightly woven tannin, giving it freshness and drinkability. A wine of uncomplicated distinctiveness with super long length. Please take the large glasses out of the cupboard. Carafing in time is highly recommended." Sebastian Bordthäuser (Sommelier und Wein-Journalist)

"Plum, mint and menthol aromas are the main themes, along with tar, licorice, leather and wild herb notes. Though the fruit is buried, there is sweetness midpalate, finishing on the dry side. A bit austere, but long, finding good equilibrium." Wine Spectator

"The Pira cru is a Roagna family monopoly. They purchased this site (in Castiglione Falletto) in 1990, and the vines range from 40 to 50 years old. The 2014 Barolo Pira opens to dark and impeccably focused fruit. This wine offers an incredible level of sharpness and detail that adds a vivid, Technicolor character to the bouquet. The aromas are lifted, bright and vertical, fueled by the power and elegance that comes so naturally to Nebbiolo. There is zest and energy here, with plenty of acidity and tannic structure to liven up the finish." Robert Parker

    • Barbaresco Gallina DOCG 2014

      Barbaresco Gallina DOCG 2014

Gallina comes from a steep, sandy vineyard, similar to the Asili vineyard, but with less limestone content, which gives it more roundness and fullness. Full bouquet of sweet tobacco, cedar wood, liquorice and dried herbs. A soft, sweet, red fruit combines on the palate in an exciting way with the typical Roagna austerity to an impressive complexity and length. It will reveal its true elegance to us only in a few years. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2014 Barbaresco Gallina offers the open-knit sensuality that is so typical of wines from this site with the classically austere feel that is a signature of the Roagna wines. Sweet tobacco, cedar, licorice and dried herbs add lovely aromatic complexity." Vinous

"Ripe, rich fruit matches the taut profile and dense tannins. Cherry, strawberry, juniper, olive, iron and menthol flavors build in intensity to a lingering aftertaste. A tightly wound, powerful version." Wine Spectator

"This is a new wine from the Roagna family, made with fruit from a leased parcel in Neive with calcareous sandy soils that help shape the aromatic purity and freshness on display here. The 2014 Barbaresco Gallina is delicately layered and bright, with cherry and wild berry aromas that peel off carefully to reveal crushed stone, licorice, wild rose and rosemary essence. Smooth and silky tannins build a delicate mouthfeel, and the wine offers pleasing acidic freshness." Robert Parker

    • Barolo Pira "Vecchie Viti" DOCG 2011

Barolo Pira “Vecchie Viti” DOCG 2011

Barolo Pira from old vines exudes a rich fragrance of rose petals, spices, liquorice and dried cherries. Perfect on the palate, beautiful fruit and spice, lush, velvety tannins and a sheer endless length. SUPERIORE.DE

"Shining, brightening ruby with a garnet shimmer. Fragrant and finely drawn nose, of rose petals, fresh peach, lots of juicy cherry. Smooth at the base, shows a lot of juicy fruit, then opens with dense, gripping tannin, builds up firm pressure, in the finale long finish, salty. " Falstaff

"The 2011 Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti is deep, powerful and inviting, even with all of its forbidding tannin. In this vintage, the two Barolos are quite different. The straight Pira is quite delicate, while the Vecchie Viti is all muscle, brawn and old-style classicism. Dark stone fruit, graphite, smoke, licorice, sage, menthol and dark spices shape the huge finish." Antonio Galloni

    About the winemakers
    Roagna
    Piedmont
    Roagna

Origin, terroir, authenticity. Everyone's talking about it - Luca Roagna and his family live it. For this purpose, they have established a splendid 10-point manifesto. The Roagnas cultivate some of the best sites around Barbaresco and Castiglione di Falletto in Barolo. Some of them since 1880, longer than Barbaresco exists as a wine name. Here are "Vecchie Vigne" actually old vines - up to a hundred years old.

Pajé, Montefico, Asili, Faset in Barbareso, La Pira, La Rocca in Barolo and, more recently, Albesani e Gallina in Neive are the top sites that make Piedmont lovers' hearts beat faster. The Crichet Pajé with the distinctive label is the absolute top Barbaresco from the best parcels of the Pajé. The name comes from the Piedmontese dialect and means approximately "Hills of good location". It is the heart of the Pajé, only half a hectare small, facing southwest, open to the river Tanaro, whose radiation soothes the hot summers and cold winters. Always streaming with wind and with a strong calcareous marl soil, they are ideal for elegant Nebbiolo.

The youngest vines in the Crichet Pajé are 60 years old." These precious vineyards are greened and are cultivated organically. No herbicides, no pesticides, no fertilizer. That's what the manifesto says. And you can see that in the vineyards, too. Everything's alive. Especially the beneficial insects: Insects, beetles, caterpillars and of course bees kill many "works" in a natural way. In addition, there is the strict manual selection of physiologically ripe grapes, vineyard by vineyard. In the new cellar there is now also space to extend the individual layers separately. Only with my own yeasts, so "spontaneous"The fermentation starts in the large wooden fermentation stands, which allow a good micro-oxidation but do not give off any toasting. Because these are also points in the manifesto. Point 10 reads: "Pure from the terroir without the influence of oak aromas."

When the wine is separated from the skins after two to three months, it continues to mature in large round cement tanks. "These tanks come closest to maturing in large bottles." Luca Roagna smiled proudly at his cellar and his "babies". If you work so consistently with old vines, you naturally have less yield. The elegant Roagna wines are therefore rare and in demand. We are pleased to be able to offer you some of them, secure your queen of wines, as Barbaresco is called in Italy. You won't regret it. Not even in twenty years, because that's how long you can forget them in the basement. SUPERIORE.DE
