“Five Roses” Rosato Salento IGT 2022
Intense, bright old pink. Fine and inviting nose of ripe peach, yellow fruits and wild berries, underpinned by minimal spice. On the palate, crisp and with fine fruit, it pulls nicely over the tongue, slightly salty, with a bittersweet animating aftertaste. SUPERIORE.DE
"Pale pink with light violet reflections. Appealing aroma of fresh orange zest, woodruff, wild berries and fresh willow bark. On the palate orange zest, hay, nuances of wild berries, fine acid structure. Very long." Vinum
"Pale pink in the glass, it offers a wealth of red peach, rosehip and blood orange flavours that linger long enough to invite a second glass of this famous Italian rosé." Falstaff
"Bright baby pink with a luminous core. In the nose of ripe strawberries, blood orange and cold tea. Shows good structure on the palate, grippy but still very elegant and precise, rich pressure and present fruit, juicy-dancing finish." Falstaff
"An immersive journey to the foundations of the typology with this rosé, the first to be marketed in Italy, Negroamaro, with a small participation of Malvasia Nera, notes of wild strawberries, touches of lime and pink pepper on the nose, brackish on the palate, with a fruity-officer return." Luca Gardini

Salice Salentino Rosso “50° Vendemmia” Riserva DOC 2019
The Riserva from the great traditional line of de Castris captivates with intense cherry fruit, fine wood notes and subtle spice. Powerful and juicy on the palate, round and harmonious, with a wonderfully long finish. Every year a fantastic price-pleasure ratio! SUPERIORE.DE
"A fantastic value, the 2019 Salice Riserva 50esima Vendemmia opens with black cherry and plum depths complemented by sweet herbs and tobacco. This is silky-smooth and rich with masses of ripe dark fruits and exotic spices. It leaves a staining of primary concentration while tapering off lightly structured yet energetic." Vinous
"A harmonious medium-bodied red offering a well-balanced palette of black plums, dried raspberries, fresh loamy earth and hints of dark chocolate and sage, all underpinned by fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity." Wine Spectator
"This powerful yet balanced red offers compact aromas of ploughed soil, violets, blood orange and crushed peppercorns over a dense blackberry core. The palate is juicy yet broad and densely packed, framed by powerful acidity and velvety tannins." Wine Enthusiast
"Warm stones, blackberries, sweet plums and cocoa beans on the nose follow through to a medium to full body with fine, silky tannins rounding out the bittersweet fruit. Spicy and quite long with a fine, spicy chocolate powder finish. An excellent Negroamaro." James Suckling

“Donna Lisa” Salice Salentino Riserva DOC 2017
Deep dark ruby red. On the nose, complex aromas of dark fruits, espresso, liquorice and herbal notes. Very classically taut on the palate, with finely honed tannins and a fresh, bright acid wire. An Apulian classic as it is written in the textbook. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich hints of tarry smoke and toast on the nose underscore baked strawberry and plum fruit flavors in this robust, full-bodied red. Tightly-knit and fresh, a stemmy touch of dried herb lingers on the grippy finish." Wine Spectator
"Aromas of nicely baked berries, dark plums, dried leaves and a twist of red dates and fine, savory cocoa beans. Full-bodied and lightly spicy with very compact, powdery tannins. Slightly bittersweet and savory in finish. Very tight now, but shows impressive tannin quantity and quality." James Suckling

The winery Leone de Castris represents 350 years of intensive wine history. The foundation stone for the Apulian winery was laid by Duke Oronzo Arcangelo Maria Francesco, Count of Lemos. He was enchanted by the Salento landscape, sold all his land in Spain and settled in the small municipality of Salice Salentino. In the course of time, the winery, still family-run today, has managed to conquer a firm place in the wine world of Apulia and the whole of Italy. The red, rosé and white drops of the house are highly appreciated by wine connoisseurs all over the world. Since the end of the nineties Piernicola Leone de Castris has managed the 500 hectare estate, which also includes olive groves, wheat fields and pastures. In recognition of his merits, the winery was named by the Sommelier-Union Italy as a "Best Wine Producer of the Year 2011" awarded.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Piero and Lisetta Leone de Castris were the first companies in the region to start bottling their own wines in 1925, having exported draught wines to the USA, Germany and France. At the end of the Second World War, in 1943, the Five Roses, the first Rosé bottle wine in Italy, was produced in two versions today. The good wine was often ordered at that time by the allied troops. Today, Leone de Castris' wide range consists of almost thirty modern wines of an impressively reliable quality, which reflect current market trends as well as the reputation and terroir of the area. At the top of the bottle battery, in addition to the two Five Roses variants, is often the Salice Salentino Rosso Donna Lisa Riserva, which is aged in small new wooden barrels, and, most recently, the two autochthonous grape variety wines of the "Per Lui"-series.
The vineyards, mostly located between Salice Salentino, Campi and Guagnano, are fertilized exclusively with natural, organic substances and cultivated by experienced hands. In addition to traditional grape varieties such as Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera, Primitivo and Susumaniello, international grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Chardonnay and others) are also cultivated. Some of the fruit processed very conscientiously in the cellar is supplied by long-standing and reliable partners. The Leone de Castris winery also has a museum where visitors can discover the most important stages of the company and the Apulian wine culture, as well as a romantic hotel ("Villa Donna Lisa") with an attached restaurant. SUPERIORE.DE
"Despite its venerable age, the estate of the Leone de Castris family owns a state-of-the-art winery. It ejects some of the best drops of Apulia." Hugh Johnson.
