Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is an underestimated grape variety. Anyone who only knows it from light white wines has not yet looked into the Colline Teramane – the hills between Gran Sasso and the Adriatic Sea, where Illuminati has been growing grapes since 1890. At 260 metres above sea level, on loamy-clayey soils that store every fresh drop of rain and welcome every sea gust, Trebbiano carries a dignity here that is rarely attributed to it elsewhere.

![Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC 2025 (BIO)]()
Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC 2025 (BIO)
Cerasuolo – the name is derived from cerasa, cherry, and also describes the bright colour of this rosé made from pure Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. The Di Properzio brothers have been vinifying it in Spoltore near Pescara since 1990: hand-picked, 18 hours of maceration, then saignée and slow fermentation at low temperature in stainless steel. No wood, no frills – just grape variety and terroir. Cherry red in the glass, fresh sour cherry, strawberry and a hint of pomegranate on the nose. Lively acidity on the palate, juicy flavour and a salty minerality reminiscent of the proximity to the Adriatic. Not a pale terrace rosé, but a wine with a backbone – and one of Italy's often underestimated rosés. SUPERIORE.DE

“Tralcetto” Pecorino Abruzzo IGT 2025
A grape variety like a phoenix rising from the ashes: Pecorino was considered almost extinct until the 1980s, displaced by higher-yielding varieties. Then it was rediscovered – and today this ancient Abruzzese grape is experiencing a spectacular renaissance. According to legend, it owes its name to the sheep (pecora), which loved to nibble on the sweet berries as they travelled through the vineyards. At Zaccagnini, pecorino grows on clayey soils in the provinces of Pescara and Chieti. The harvest at the end of August – later than for Trebbiano and Pinot Grigio – gives the wine its characteristic structure. After cryomaceration and gentle vacuum pressing, the must ferments at a low temperature in stainless steel.

!["Tralcetto Il Bianco di Ciccio" Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC 2025]()
“Tralcetto Il Bianco di Ciccio” Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC 2025
The small vine wood on the neck of the bottle tells a story: In Bolognano, the small village in the province of Pescara where Zaccagnini has been making wine since 1978, the local women tie each Tralcetto to the bottle by hand with raffia. A symbol of the connection with the land that has long since become a trademark. The Bianco di Ciccio comes from vineyards on clayey soils, where the vines grow partly on the classic pergola and partly on a trellis. An early harvest at the beginning of August preserves the lively acidity. After gentle vacuum pressing and cold clarification, only the fine must fraction ferments at a controlled low temperature – a process that maximises freshness and aroma.

!["Tralcetto" Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC 2025]()
“Tralcetto” Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC 2025
Cerasuolo is not a rosé – at least not in the fashionable sense. It is an independent type of wine with its own DOC since 2010, deeply rooted in Abruzzo's wine culture. The name is derived from cerasa, the dialect word for cherry, and describes the characteristic colour that has accompanied the region's tables for centuries. Zaccagnini's Tralcetto is a lesson in what Montepulciano can do without prolonged contact with the skins: The grapes are gently pressed and only the must is fermented at a low temperature – at a low temperature to preserve the fruit. Brief ageing in stainless steel, then into the bottle.

“Tralcetto” Pinot Grigio Terre d’Abruzzo IGT 2025
Pinot Grigio from Abruzzo? Yes, and how. What often degenerates into a neutral mass-produced wine in Veneto or Friuli gains character in the hills of Chieti. The clayey soils and the combination of Adriatic breezes and Apennine coolness give the international grape variety a freshness and flavour that you will look for in vain elsewhere. The grapes are harvested early in the first half of August to preserve acidity and flavour. After gentle vacuum pressing, only the pre-fermentation must ferments at a low temperature. A short period on the lees gives the wine additional texture and depth before it is matured in stainless steel.

“Tralcetto” Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC 2023
The small vine wood on the neck of the bottle is more than just a nice gesture – it is the trademark of Zaccagnini and symbolises a philosophy: nothing from the vineyard is wasted, even the pruning finds its place. Since 1978, the Zaccagnini family has been working in Bolognano, deep in the mountainous hinterland of the province of Pescara, where the vineyards lie like an amphitheatre, protected by snow-capped mountains. Here, where fresh winds blow daily through a mountain gorge, the Montepulciano grape thrives in ideal conditions. After gentle manual harvesting and temperature-controlled maceration, the wine matures for six months in Slavonian oak barrels before finding its final harmony in the bottle for a further three months.

!["Tralcetto" Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva DOC 2021]()
“Tralcetto” Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva DOC 2021
The Riserva version of the famous "Tralcetto" is a modern expression of Montepulciano from Abruzzo - more powerful, denser, but always clear in its style. The 2021 vintage was selectively harvested by hand and aged for 9 months in large wooden barrels after traditional mash fermentation, which gives the wine structure and depth without masking the fruit.

From the beach to the highest peak.
Nowhere in Italy is the difference in altitude greater. From the approximately 130 kilometre long Adriatic beach it goes up to 2,912 metres above sea level. Abruzzo, as it is called in Italian, is dominated by the Apennines, which have their highest peaks here with Corno Grande and Monte Amaro. Two thirds of Abruzzo is mountainous. On the remaining third, which slopes hilly to the sea, wine is cultivated up to 600 meters above sea level. A scenically fascinating wine region in the middle of Italy, east of Rome.
Like the micro-climate zones, the soils are very varied. The approximately 33,000 hectares of vineyards alternate from rocky soils to limestone, clay, sand and gravel in the various zones. Good conditions for a varied viticulture. However, most of the winegrowers were rather conservative and shied away from experiments with new grape varieties or methods of cultivation and delivered their grapes to the cooperatives. These produced good everyday wine, but no top qualities. That is why the image of the wines was only average.
Only in the late 2000s did a small quality offensive of some courageous winegrowers begin, above all Gianni Masciarelli, who tirelessly presented his wines at events and fairs and amazed the tasters and imitated colleagues.
Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Pecorino, Passerino, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
This is the main assortment of the Abruzzi. One DOCG - Colline Teramane Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOCG - and eight DOC regions produce over 100 million liters of quality origin wine, which is a good third of all Abruzzo wines. However, this proportion has been fairly constant for ten years. And that means two thirds of the time. "vino"so simple table wine. This is a huge quantity, namely over ten percent of all simple Italian wines. It is also interesting to note that almost 80 percent of all wines come from the Chieti region, where 25,000 hectares of vineyards are located alone. The other three regions. L'Aquila, Teramo and Pescara therefore only cultivate a total of 7,800 hectares.
Wine and olive oil are of excellent quality throughout the region.
The most famous grape variety is the red Montepulciano grape, which is often blended with Sangiovese. There are also Barbera and Ciliegiolo as well as the French varieties, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a little Pinot Nero. The white variety most commonly cultivated is a Trebbiano variety, the pedigree of which has not been clearly established and which is known as Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. Also Trebbiano Toscano, Pecorino, Bombino Bianco, Verdicchio, Malvasia, Falanghina, Bianca di Candida and some others in small quantities.
Trebbiano d‘Abruzzo and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo are the two most important quality wines.
They are also internationally known. The Montepulciano often convinces already in the youth with fruity aromas and velvety texture. After a few years in the bottle, however, it develops into a delicate, full-bodied wine with a fine tannin structure. The Montepulciano d’By the way, Abruzzo has nothing to do with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC is a rich rosé version of the Montepulciano. But beware, this is not a light, palatable summer wine.
White wine is produced significantly less in DOP quality (only 9%). Although the Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Pecorino and other regional specialities always perform well at international tastings, they remain niche products - simply because there is so little of them. SUPERIORE.DE
