Campirosa Cerasuolo only gradually unfolds its fresh strawberry and cherry flavours, which are adorned with sweet flowers. The palate is silky-soft and very convincing with its ripe red fruits and juicy acidity. A hint of liquorice, exotic spices and nuanced tannins emerge on the finish and seem to linger for almost a minute. Campirosa is already a charming favourite when young, but can also mature for another year in the cellar. SUPERIORE.DE

“Riparosso” Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC 2022
Illuminati's Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riparosso has a sweet scent of violets and lavender, followed by crushed blackberries and chalk dust. It washes over the palate with soft textures and ripe wild berries, contrasted towards the end by sour citrus fruits. It finishes perfumed and with admirable length, leaving a layer of dusty tannins that tug at the cheeks. Very Italian - very well made. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riparosso opens with a dark floral blend of wilted violets and lavender that fades into crushed blackberries and sage. It is soft and round with a silky texture and an abundance of ripe red and black fruits. A salty minerality adds tension to the 2022's finish with medium length and soft tannins." Vinous
"Plum, cherry jam, aniseed and sweet spice on the nose. It’s full-bodied with powdery tannins and cinnamon-like spice notes to close. Tangy, too." James Suckling

“Tralcetto” Pecorino d’Abruzzo DOC 2023
This white grape variety still leads an unjustly shadowy existence, yet it has so much fun and seriousness to offer: Fine, fresh bouquet of peach, quince and almond. Firmly built on the palate, with multilayered primary fruit and beautifully integrated, lively acidity. A wonderfully sensitive companion to light summer dishes, also enjoyable with bread and olives under the awning in the surprising summer rain. SUPERIORE.DE

Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC 2023 (BIO)
Bright cherry red colour with strong reflections. Fresh cherry bouquet, characteristic and with floral notes. Dry, fruity flavour with aromas of sour cherries, raspberries and wild strawberries, with a typical, very light almond note on the finish. A very harmonious rosé with a fresh and powerful structure that lingers beautifully and very clearly, leaving the mouth watering. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo 2023 presents itself in the glass with a translucent cherry-red colour. Spicy and floral on the nose, it develops aromas of rose petals, leather, tea leaves, strawberries and cherries. In the mouth, it is lively and full of energy, a jagged, powerful phenolic structure gives the wine shape and form. The 2023 finishes clean and refreshing, if a little short - a particularly vinous rosé that would certainly do well on the dinner table." Vinous
"Bright cherry color with notes of red berry fruit, plums and violets. It’s medium-bodied, rich and fruity. Straightforward but delicious." James Suckling

A well-proportioned bouquet with a spicy flavour and aromas of light flowers. The palate is medium-bodied, with lively acidity and good length with a slightly salty finish. Pecorino is a wonderful and always fresh accompaniment to savoury vegetable dishes and white meat and seafood. SUPERIORE.DE
"A refreshing, savoury white wine with notes of lemon zest, sliced pears and chamomile. It is medium-bodied, lively and delicious. A bright expression of pecorino." James Suckling
"More savory than sweet, the 2023 Pecorino lifts from the glass with a thrust of wild herbs, crushed rocks and lime zest. Round and supple, this builds lovely tension through a core of saline minerality and citrus-infused green apple fruits. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC 2022
Deep ruby red colour with a violet hue. Clean, intense and persistent on the nose, with notes of red fruits, blackberries and sour cherries. Full and fruity on the palate, with notes of tobacco and liquorice on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is remarkably pretty. It opens with a cascade of violets and lavender before giving way to crushed blackberries and a twist of sour citrus. It's soft and round with saturating wild berry fruits and inner herbal tones, taking on a peppery edge toward the close. Vibrant acidity maintains a fantastic balance as the 2022 tapers off long, potent and gently tannic. This makes for a beautiful introduction to the La Valentina house style." Vinous

From the beach to the highest peak.
Nowhere in Italy is the difference in altitude greater. From the approximately 130 kilometre long Adriatic beach it goes up to 2,912 metres above sea level. Abruzzo, as it is called in Italian, is dominated by the Apennines, which have their highest peaks here with Corno Grande and Monte Amaro. Two thirds of Abruzzo is mountainous. On the remaining third, which slopes hilly to the sea, wine is cultivated up to 600 meters above sea level. A scenically fascinating wine region in the middle of Italy, east of Rome.
Like the micro-climate zones, the soils are very varied. The approximately 33,000 hectares of vineyards alternate from rocky soils to limestone, clay, sand and gravel in the various zones. Good conditions for a varied viticulture. However, most of the winegrowers were rather conservative and shied away from experiments with new grape varieties or methods of cultivation and delivered their grapes to the cooperatives. These produced good everyday wine, but no top qualities. That is why the image of the wines was only average.
Only in the late 2000s did a small quality offensive of some courageous winegrowers begin, above all Gianni Masciarelli, who tirelessly presented his wines at events and fairs and amazed the tasters and imitated colleagues.
Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Pecorino, Passerino, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
This is the main assortment of the Abruzzi. One DOCG - Colline Teramane Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOCG - and eight DOC regions produce over 100 million liters of quality origin wine, which is a good third of all Abruzzo wines. However, this proportion has been fairly constant for ten years. And that means two thirds of the time. "vino"so simple table wine. This is a huge quantity, namely over ten percent of all simple Italian wines. It is also interesting to note that almost 80 percent of all wines come from the Chieti region, where 25,000 hectares of vineyards are located alone. The other three regions. L'Aquila, Teramo and Pescara therefore only cultivate a total of 7,800 hectares.
Wine and olive oil are of excellent quality throughout the region.
The most famous grape variety is the red Montepulciano grape, which is often blended with Sangiovese. There are also Barbera and Ciliegiolo as well as the French varieties, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a little Pinot Nero. The white variety most commonly cultivated is a Trebbiano variety, the pedigree of which has not been clearly established and which is known as Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. Also Trebbiano Toscano, Pecorino, Bombino Bianco, Verdicchio, Malvasia, Falanghina, Bianca di Candida and some others in small quantities.
Trebbiano d‘Abruzzo and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo are the two most important quality wines.
They are also internationally known. The Montepulciano often convinces already in the youth with fruity aromas and velvety texture. After a few years in the bottle, however, it develops into a delicate, full-bodied wine with a fine tannin structure. The Montepulciano d’By the way, Abruzzo has nothing to do with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC is a rich rosé version of the Montepulciano. But beware, this is not a light, palatable summer wine.
White wine is produced significantly less in DOP quality (only 9%). Although the Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Pecorino and other regional specialities always perform well at international tastings, they remain niche products - simply because there is so little of them. SUPERIORE.DE
