“Campirosa” Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC 2022
Campirosa Cerasuolo only gradually unfolds its fresh strawberry and cherry notes adorned with sweet flowers. On the palate, silky-soft and very convincing with its ripe red fruits and juicy acids. Hints of liquorice, exotic spices and nuanced tannins emerge on the finish and seem to linger for almost a minute. Campirosa is a charming favourite wine young, but can also age for another year in the cellar. SUPERIORE.DE
"Wild strawberries and peppery roses waft up from the 2022 Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo Campirosa. This balances candies citrus against tart orchard fruits, all energized by zesty acidity. The 2022 cleans up quite well, leaving a subtle mineral tinge and licorice to fade slowly." Vinous

“Riparosso” Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC 2021
The rugged, red-tinged rocky landscape of Ripe in the immediate vicinity of the vineyards gave its name to the Riparosso. Its intense bouquet of delicately fresh character is beguiling, the velvety and mild taste absolutely seductive. SUPERIORE.DE
"Marasca cherry, licorice root, mint and fennel. The mid-palate, ferruginous and mid-weighted, in the most savory and meaty sense. This is one of those wines, inimitably Italian by virtue of its dry structural focus, that just needs a few years. Not too much time. Just a modicum of patience. Stay the path." James Suckling
"A sweet blend of violets and lavender gives way to crushed blackberries and chalk dust lifts from the 2021 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riparosso. It washes across the palate with soft textures and ripe wild berry fruits that are neatly contrasted by sour citrus toward the close. This finishes perfumed and with admirable length, leaving a coating of dusty tannins that tug at the cheeks. Nicely done." Vinous

Passerina Controguerra DOC 2022
Passerina is a widespread autochthonous grape variety, especially in Abruzzo or Marche, which has awoken from its slumber in recent years. Pale yellow in colour, fresh citrus bouquet with exotic notes and equipped with a beautiful acid structure, it is an ever-reliable companion to Mediterranean cuisine and also a joyful pleasure on its own. SUPERIORE.DE
"Aromas of citrus fruit and fresh ferns. Medium body with a pleasant, silky texture that gives a smooth overall feel. Loses a bit of intensity towards the end, then it leaves you with a fresh, saline note." James Suckling

This fills the palate with round textures, yet possesses a salty core of minerality that stimulates the senses, as lime zests and young pear evolve toward the close. “Spelt” Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo Superiore DOC 2022 (BIO)
Rich, full and typical of the variety, the Spelt Rosato has an intense aroma and the fruity-dry taste, a slender acid wire and with a clear, energetic, full-bodied final. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo Superiore Spelt 2022 is a deep red wine with orange reflections. It opens in the glass with a bouquet of sweet spices, rose petals and dusty dried cherries. It feels silky, almost heavy, with a nervy acidity that balances a cascade of ripe strawberries and candied citrus, stimulating the senses with zesty tension. The 2022 finishes with dramatic length, showing a forgiving hint of spiciness as red liquorice notes linger. This is a powerful interpretation of Cerasuolo Spelt, yet very well balanced." Vinous
"Sparkling, intense cherry pink. In the nose of beetroot, carrots and fresh cherries, paired with fine salty and earthy tones. On the palate with lovely juiciness, well integrated, albeit noticeable tannin, savoury fruit with considerable length. Great food companion." Falstaff
"Deep cherry red in colour. Delightful aromas of raspberries and red cherries flow from the glass. Very inviting. Medium bodied with super fresh raspberry flavours, jazzed up with added notes of blood orange and aniseed. Crisp and very tasty finish. Excellent summer fare and not just as an aperitif. “8 1/2” Pecorino Terre di Chieti IGT 2022
Terre di Chieti IGT was created in 1995 when the IGT category was first introduced throughout Italy. It is complemented by the more site-specific title Colline Teatine IGT, which focuses only on the hills around the provincial capital of Chieti. The Pecorino grape variety, which has in the meantime returned strongly to the focus of international wine lovers, thrives particularly well here and produces complex, mineral white wines on the mostly clay and limestone soils.
Straw yellow with greenish reflections. Fine bouquet of sage and citrus fruits. Fresh and with a certain pressure on the palate, with very good harmony and impressive fruit-acid play, final rounded finish with an interesting herbal spiciness. SUPERIORE.DE

From the beach to the highest peak.
Nowhere in Italy is the difference in altitude greater. From the approximately 130 kilometre long Adriatic beach it goes up to 2,912 metres above sea level. Abruzzo, as it is called in Italian, is dominated by the Apennines, which have their highest peaks here with Corno Grande and Monte Amaro. Two thirds of Abruzzo is mountainous. On the remaining third, which slopes hilly to the sea, wine is cultivated up to 600 meters above sea level. A scenically fascinating wine region in the middle of Italy, east of Rome.
Like the micro-climate zones, the soils are very varied. The approximately 33,000 hectares of vineyards alternate from rocky soils to limestone, clay, sand and gravel in the various zones. Good conditions for a varied viticulture. However, most of the winegrowers were rather conservative and shied away from experiments with new grape varieties or methods of cultivation and delivered their grapes to the cooperatives. These produced good everyday wine, but no top qualities. That is why the image of the wines was only average.
Only in the late 2000s did a small quality offensive of some courageous winegrowers begin, above all Gianni Masciarelli, who tirelessly presented his wines at events and fairs and amazed the tasters and imitated colleagues.
Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Pecorino, Passerino, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
This is the main assortment of the Abruzzi. One DOCG - Colline Teramane Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOCG - and eight DOC regions produce over 100 million liters of quality origin wine, which is a good third of all Abruzzo wines. However, this proportion has been fairly constant for ten years. And that means two thirds of the time. "vino"so simple table wine. This is a huge quantity, namely over ten percent of all simple Italian wines. It is also interesting to note that almost 80 percent of all wines come from the Chieti region, where 25,000 hectares of vineyards are located alone. The other three regions. L'Aquila, Teramo and Pescara therefore only cultivate a total of 7,800 hectares.
Wine and olive oil are of excellent quality throughout the region.
The most famous grape variety is the red Montepulciano grape, which is often blended with Sangiovese. There are also Barbera and Ciliegiolo as well as the French varieties, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a little Pinot Nero. The white variety most commonly cultivated is a Trebbiano variety, the pedigree of which has not been clearly established and which is known as Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. Also Trebbiano Toscano, Pecorino, Bombino Bianco, Verdicchio, Malvasia, Falanghina, Bianca di Candida and some others in small quantities.
Trebbiano d‘Abruzzo and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo are the two most important quality wines.
They are also internationally known. The Montepulciano often convinces already in the youth with fruity aromas and velvety texture. After a few years in the bottle, however, it develops into a delicate, full-bodied wine with a fine tannin structure. The Montepulciano d’By the way, Abruzzo has nothing to do with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC is a rich rosé version of the Montepulciano. But beware, this is not a light, palatable summer wine.
White wine is produced significantly less in DOP quality (only 9%). Although the Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Pecorino and other regional specialities always perform well at international tastings, they remain niche products - simply because there is so little of them. SUPERIORE.DE
