“Villa Medoro” Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC 2021
Deep ruby red with a cool violet rim - visual clarity that already hints at a certain concentration. Ripe dark fruits such as sour cherries and blackberries on the nose, gently accompanied by a hint of spicy pepper and Mediterranean herbs. Juicy on the palate, with ripe fruit, round tannins and a pleasant freshness. The ageing in stainless steel tanks preserves the precision and purity typical of the variety. The modern wine enterprise reminds in its form of a white Ufo with large and small glass elements. The architecturally impressive Villa Medoro, with more than 250 hectares of land, belongs to the Morricone family and is located in Fontanelle di Atri in Teramo, a province dominated by the eastern slopes and valleys of the Abruzzo Apennines that gently slope down to the Adriatic.
Since Federica Morricone, a young, ambitious and always warm visitor, has taken over the scepter in the winery, the quality of the assortment has been rising steeply. The very cultivated, powerful and personality strong wines are well thought out and offer every year the best possible synthesis between tradition and modernity. In only a short time the successful businesswoman has succeeded in penetrating into the first row of the Abruzzi wine economy as well as in celebrating international success. Federica, whose family has been active in wine production since the early seventies, attaches particular importance to the classic Montepulciano. This is matured without wood so that it retains its fruitiness.
The authentic plants of Villa Medoro, which are strongly linked to their terroir, thrive in the southern part of Colline Teramane not far from the coast on warm loamy and calcareous soils. The vineyards of Medoro, Fontanelle and Fonte Corvo, which are around 200 metres high and cultivated with great passion and newly planted in the 1990s, enjoy a traditional pergola education and are more reminiscent of pretty gardens than of agricultural land. Originally, Federica had inherited only a 30-hectare vineyard from her grandfather. Today, Trebbiano is cultivated on an area three times as large as the red parade variety. The vine portfolio is completed by the varieties Pecorino (white) and Passerina (red), which are native to central Italy but less well known.
The wine guide Gambero Rossoin the year 2007 with the honor is supported by the 'A climber of the year' Dear landlady of a young team that is as passionate about its work as the boss herself. Even the simple base wines that leave the modern cellar, supervised by none other than Riccardo Cotarella, give great pleasure. A further plus: All products pressed in the vineyard - whether white, red or rosé - are sold at extremely favourable prices. SUPERIORE.DE
"The joy of working and entrepreneurial skills - that was half the battle for Federica Morricone, the young winemaker, at least it is the basis for the international success that this winery in Atri has enjoyed for several years. In addition, there is a modern cellar, almost 100 hectares of vineyards in the southern part of the Colline Teramane and an arsenal of really impressive wines, all at affordable prices."Gambero Rosso 2011
