“Kappa Essenza” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016 · MAGNUM in OWC
The essence of chance. There are wines that are only created when the stars are right – and Essenza from Fattoria Kappa is one of them. In the language of physics, kappa means constant, but at this extraordinary winery on the border between Bolgheri and Maremma, chance rules. Only in exceptional years, when the Cabernet Franc grapes reach their fullest maturity and complexity, is this rare cru produced – a gamble that only a few winegrowers in Tuscany dare to take. 2016 was such a year of perfection. After a cool, damp winter and spring, July finally brought the longed-for heat and dryness. A welcome rain shower in mid-August cooled things down and paved the way for a textbook September: warm days, cool nights and the dramatic temperature fluctuations that allow Cabernet Franc to reach its peak. While other producers opted for tried and tested Bordeaux blends, Andrea Di Maio – the agronomist from Livorno and one of the three souls of Fattoria Kappa – went it alone with this capricious grape variety.

Hardly any other wine-growing region has caused as much of a sensation in recent decades as Bolgheri: after the Marchese Incisa della Rocchetta (Tenuta San Guido) planted international grape varieties in this small village on the Tuscan coast back in 1944, Bolgheri developed into the avant-garde in Italy, which was still quite dusty in vinophile terms at the time, after the birth of its still spectacular Sassicaia in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, Bolgheri is a DOC in its own right, in which Syrah and Petit Verdot dominate alongside Merlot and Cabernet. At the time, an English-speaking wine critic coined the now established generic term "Supertuscans" for these refined cuvées from this region.
These Supertuscans are characterised by their high quality and unique character, often using modern winemaking techniques. The wines have quickly made a name for themselves and have been among the most sought-after wines in the world for many years.
Between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the hilly hinterland south of Livorno, there are now numerous terrific wines from various producers. Argentiera, Ca' Marcanda (Angelo Gaja), Grattamacco, Guado al Tasso (Antinori), Le Macchiole, Michele Satta, Poggio al Tesoro, Podere Sapaio or the Tenuta di Biserno are just a few of the illustrious names alongside the top dogs Sassicaia and Ornellaia.
And why a PREMIUM SALE now?
Quite simply. Every climate-controlled warehouse is finite and every year there is a new vintage. We have therefore decided to part with some great wines, even at a discount. They are more than worth their original price at the time, no question about it, and even more so when matured - because the winegrowers don't increase the prices for historic vintages every year for no reason!
We therefore advise you to stock up now on carefully matured wines and vintages that not only promise maximum enjoyment today and tomorrow, but are also no longer available in Italy and throughout Europe. Enjoy discovering and choosing, because it really doesn't get any better than this. But as always: while stocks last ...
