“Poggio alla Guardia” Maremma Toscana DOC 2022
Dark ruby red colour. Aromas of dark cherry, blueberry, milk chocolate and pepper are enhanced by intense violet notes. Smooth, concentrated and delicately sweet on the palate, with lush red fruit and dark berry flavours. The medium-long finish has strong but well-integrated tannins and good acidity. A very impressive entry-level wine. SUPERIORE.DE
"Ripe dark and blue fruit, blue flowers, candied orange peel and spices on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, smooth and succulent, slightly jammy but well formed and focused, with a seamless tannin structure." James Suckling

“Ornello” Maremma Toscana DOC 2020
Ornello is an open wine with wonderful, inviting aromas of ripe, dark fruit and vegetal notes. Pleasantly fruity and full on the palate with good length and balance. SUPERIORE.DE
"A tightly packed version, with plum, fruitcake and hoisin flavors shaded by menthol and saline elements. Gains support from a dense swath of tannins as this unfolds on the palate. Gives fine length, if on the tannic side now." Wine Spectator
"The 2020 Ornello is an attractive wine to drink now and over the next few years, while the fruit remains vibrant. There’s good depth to the dark red fruit, cedar, dried herbs, tobacco and incense flavors. Stylistically, Ornello seems to be done in a fresher style than in the past. A touch of Syrah adds an attractive element of earthiness and spice that distinguishes the Ornello in the range." Vinous
"Attractively fruity and herbal nose of blackberries, stewed cherries, blackcurrant leaves, sage and dried flowers. Medium to full body with sleek tannins and a juicy, ripe palate." James Suckling

“Le Sughere di Frassinello” Maremma Toscana DOC 2019
Dark ruby red with elegant shimmer. Intense and appealing nose with delicate spicy notes, opens up after some time and then dark notes of wild berries and some undergrowth predominate. Very dense, with continuation of the spicy notes already found in the nose, well integrated with lots of fruit, which lets the wine rest weightily with a long final on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling ruby. Opens on the nose with balsamic notes of eucalyptus, lots of blackberry, some clove. Full-bodied and soft on the nose, unfolds with lots of savoury tannin over the course." Falstaff
"The nose on this wine has the quiet elegance and confidence that usually takes more age to realize. It gives aromas of leather, graphite, sandalwood and pepper before nutmeg, dried currants and other spices and dried fruits come through. The palate is energized with an iron-rich current of raw meat and bricks, lifted by a sizzle of acid and heat." Wine Enthusiast
"Aromas of plums, black cherries, blackberries, tomato leaf, dried herb and spice box. Medium-to full-bodied with firm, polished tannins. Rich and fleshy on the palate with a lots of black fruit. Flavorful finish." James Suckling

“Rocca di Frassinello” Maremma Toscana DOC 2018
Rocca di Frassinello, an elegant, very tightly woven wine with dark aromas of blackberry and blueberry, smoke and leather, flanked by a light sea breeze and hints of the reddish Maremma soils. Fascinatingly powerful palate, muscular stature, straightforward but complex, long and wide on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"A rich, fruity red with plum, chocolate and walnut character. It’s full-bodied with lots of round tannins and a savory finish." James Suckling
"The headline wine from Rocca di Frassinello is this hearty blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It represents a selection of the best fruit from across the estate. The 2018 Maremma Toscana Rocca di Frassinello is a darkly concentrated expression with dark plum, bitter chocolate, spice, leather and cured tobacco. This is a very concentrated and savory expression that draws out the richness and the textural structure of your textbook Tuscan red." Wine Advocate
"The 2018 Rocca di Frassinello is a bold, exotic wine. Ripe red cherry, kirsch, cinnamon and rose petal are all kicked up in this flamboyant Maremma red. Plush fruit and silky tannins add to its considerable appeal. Hints of sweet pipe tobacco, cedar and mint appear over time, adding striking inner perfume and sweetness." Vinous

Rocca di Frassinello is situated in the Maremma, quasi on the ancient Roman road Via Aurelia, between Grosseto and Follonica in the northern hills. Or for wine connoisseurs: between Bolgheri in the north and Scansano in the south. It is a joint venture of the publisher Paolo Panerai, who has already made Castellare di Castellina in Chianti one of the best quality companies in the Chianti Classico area, and the Rothschild family (Domaines Baron de Rothschild-Lafite).
A new vineyard was created from five smaller farms. Almost 500 hectares of land belong to it today, on 90 hectares wine was planted little by little. Paolo Panerai and his competent advisors, above all chief oenologist Alessandro Cellai, recognized that unique conditions meet here in the hills. On the one hand, similar soil formations as in Castellina, which was important to the Sangiovese lover Panerai, on the other hand, 3-5 degrees higher average temperatures, which allows the French varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Verdot and Syrah to mature better. And third, the constant wind that flows through the Via Aurelia like a canyon from the sea during the day and provides cool wind at night from the sheltering mountains in the north. This causes morning dew or rain to dry quickly and the vines are hardly at risk of disease.
The collaboration with the professors of the University of Turin for the research of the Sangiovese clones (here called Sangioveto) is continued on Rocca di Frassinello and many rare clone selections were replanted. The idea, however, is to combine the best of Sangiovese with the best of the French grape varieties for which Bolgheri is famous. And this succeeds quite masterfully and due to the lime and ferrous soils even quite unique.
"Sailing brings the people' at the same time" you could change an old saying. Because all the people involved in the project are also enthusiastic sailors. Paolo Panerai and Eric de Rothschild even get involved with the legendary America's Cup, the oldest still driven and probably most spectacular regatta in the world. There are countless articles written by Paolo Panerai, all of which have some relation to sailing, yes, he even compared winemaking to participation in America.'s Cup and finally barriques were once the transport containers with which wine was usually delivered on sailing ships.
This circle of friends also includes the star architect Renzo Piano, whose father, by the way, was known for his excellent wines in Piedmont. Piano designed the wine cellar worth seeing in the Maremma. With the winegrower's knowledge of internal processes, a true masterpiece was created whose centre, the maturation room for the barriques, looks like a modern concert hall.
One could easily write a book about Paolo Panerai and his friends, his wineries and his wines, unfortunately there is not enough space here. But we promise you, if you dedicate yourself to the wines of Rocca di Frassinello, you will not regret it, but you will spontaneously feel like in the hills of Tuscany - surrounded by spicy sea breeze and Tuscan sun!
