“Pietradolce” Rosato Etna DOC 2020
Etna Rosato by Pietradolce not only attracts attention with its delicate shiny colour, the delicate rose bouquet beguiles and the taste ultimately convinces with lively aromas of peach, cranberry and grapefruit, elegant mineral tones accompany the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Rosato Etna is quite mineral in style, lifting from the glass with pungent flowery perfumes, an air of crushed rocks and nuances of lemon custard. It’s round and pleasantly sweet, contrasted by a touch of sour green citrus as exotic inner florals build toward the close. Hints of tropical melon and a gentle pinch of residual acids maintain a lovely freshness as the 2020 slowly tapers off. This Nerello Mascalese Rosato is firing on all cylinders." Vinous
"Very pleasant rosé with aromas and flavors of strawberries and cream with a little, freshening twist of orange. Medium-bodied with a relaxed feel, but there's plenty of energy and drive, too. Delicious." James Suckling

“Pietradolce” Rosso Etna DOC 2019
Pietradolce Rosso is reminiscent of an elegant red from Burgundy. Light, aromatic tones of cherry, cigar tobacco and cedar, medium-bodied and well-proportioned on the palate, tasty fruit, balanced and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling, intense garnet red. Opens with a fine play of pomegranate and cardamom, some blood orange. Hearty, grippy tannin on the palate, salty and deep, is still young and unpolished but has the best beginnings." Falstaff
"The 2019 Etna Rosso blossoms with pretty rose notes, wild herbs and strawberries. It's soft and enveloping, balancing a pleasant inner sweetness with energizing acidity and tart wild berries. A gentle layer of tannin adds lovely grip, as this finishes long with notes of licorice and blueberry skins. The 2019 is a harmonious beauty." Vinous
"Aromas of red cherries, dried cranberries, citrus zest and tobacco smoke. It's medium-bodied with fresh acidity, ultra fine tannins and a refined finish. More dried than fresh-fruit character." James Suckling

“Archineri” Bianco Etna DOC 2019
Excellent the mineral Archineri from the ancient Carricante vine. With great clarity and freshness, it shows its typical aroma profile of apple, banana. Peach and citrus fruit. Fascinatingly dense on the palate with a velvety texture, a hint of chalk and a long mineral-complex finish. Pre-Phylloxera = from vines with no roots! SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling, pale straw yellow. Balanced and appealing nose, opens with notes of lemon, fresh peach and sage. Starts very clear and fresh, then spreads out nicely, nice game, long and salty." Falstaff
"Lovely aromas of pear pie with light vanilla and lime undertones. Full-bodied with tight, crisp acidity and a pear-puree and sherbet aftertaste." James Suckling
"The 2019 Etna Bianco Archineri is a pure expression of Carricante from pre-phylloxera vines. The wine is made in stainless steel and you get a very pure and precise taste of the grape as a result. This was a great growing season on Etna, resulting in nicely concentrated and shapely fruit, so that simple winemaking approach is well matched to the elegance of vintage material on hand. Peach, honey and crushed stone rise to the forefront of the bouquet." Robert Parker

“Contrada S. Spirito” Rosso Etna DOC 2017
Brilliant, brightening ruby garnet. Spicy notes of wild berries, liquorice, flint and traces of thyme on the nose. Beguiling extract sweetness on the palate, plus a juicy freshness and finely meshed, tight tannins. In the final, fine salty components, overall already very polished and supple with further interesting ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"Cask sample. Pale crimson. Deep cherry fruit nose with a hint of oak. On the palate it combines lightness of touch of raspberry and cherry fruit and a charge of dark, spicy tannins. Embryonic and in need of further ageing." Jancis Robinson
"A chewy, flavorful Etna red with plum, light prune and rust aromas and flavors. Full body. Juicy finish." James Suckling
"Another 2017 release of 4,000 bottles and also from pre-phylloxera Nerello Mascalese vines, the Pietradolce 2017 Etna Rosso Contrada Santo Spirito is really quite beautifully balanced and composed in the vintage, more so than I would have expected given some of the excessive heat that came during the summer months. With fruit from a vineyard site in Castiglione di Sicilia, the wine reveals a polished, dark ruby appearance with lighthearted aromas of sour cherry and tart cassis. Those delicate berry embellishments are wrapped around spice, mineral and earth." Robert Parker

“Contrada Rampante” Rosso Etna DOC 2017
Contrada Rampante with a finely woven bouquet of dark red cherries, flowers, mint and liquorice. Fresh and lively on the palate, with a memorable blend of ethereal sweetness, filigree acidity and interesting salinity. A contemplative drop that requires a certain amount of experience and patience to be fully discovered. Pre-Phylloxera = from rootless vines! SUPERIORE.DE
"Cask sample. Just mid crimson. Perfumed morello cherry and really tightly wound. Slow release of ripe raspberry and cherry fruit with a Nebbiolo-like, long tannic charge on the finish." Jancis Robinson
"Darkly elegant and poised, the 2017 Etna Rosso Contrada Rampante slowly comes to life. Exotic spice scents emerge, mixed with smoky crushed stone, dried roses and black cherries. It's silky-smooth with medium-bodied weight, complemented by bright acidity and a cooling mix of red and blue fruits. Sweet tannins and minerals mingle through the long, mouthwatering finale, leaving a lightly structured feel as inner violet florals slowly fade. This is incredibly pretty and already highly enjoyable, yet has short-term cellaring potential as well. Nicely done!" Vinous
"Attractive ripe berry, plum and spice aromas follow through to a medium to full body, chewy tannins and a powerful finish." James Suckling
"With pre-phylloxera fruit from 90-year-old vines in the village of Castiglione di Sicilia, this asset in the Pietradolce portfolio is a relatively new addition. The 2017 Etna Rosso Contrada Rampante shows some extra concentration and darkness that reflects the vineyard site and the hot growing conditions of the vintage. The wine offers a lot of savory characteristics with leather and crushed stone, but there are some solid tones of blackberry and wild plum at its core." Robert Parker

Brilliant, brightening ruby garnet. In the bouquet spicy notes of wild berries, liquorice, flint and traces of thyme. Beguiling extract sweetness on the palate, in addition a juicy freshness and a fine-meshed, tight tannin. In the final then fine salty components, altogether already today very polished and supple with further interesting maturity potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"This racy red opens with aromas of wet stone, wild aromatic herb, violet and ground clove. It's exquisite and has intense energy, featuring juicy pomegranate, orange zest, star anise and savory saline alongside firm acidity and taut, polished tannins. Some may find this too ethereally delicate, but lovers of extreme elegance will be hooked." Wine Enthusiast

"Aromas of woodland berry, Mediterranean scrub, camphor and oak-driven spice shape the nose on this fragrant red. On the tight palate, firm acidity accompanies raspberry jam, orange zest, vanilla and licorice. Firm, grainy tannins leave a puckering, drying close. The red Archineri from Nerello Mascalese grapes is full of character and elegant. Very refined bouquet of currants and wild berries, plus a hint of dog roses, stone fruit and ethereal aromas. Very exquisite, very juicy, tasty and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"Enticing aromas of flowers, cherries and plums follow through to a medium to full body, ripe, juicy fruit and a chewy, fresh finish. Lovely creamy texture." James Suckling
"The 2017 Etna Rosso Archineri is a fine and delicate expression from Etna that presents concise and carefully laid-out aromas of wild fruit, tart cherry, mountain herb and fresh violets. Not all red wines from this hot and dry vintage have held up as nicely nor are as vibrant as this pretty wine from Michele Faro and his team at Pietradolce. To the palate, the wine is lean and crisp and there is a salty note to the finish. In fact, this is nearly lean enough to enjoy with a seared tuna steak." Robert Parker

“Vigna Barbagalli” Rosso Etna DOC 2013
The pure, autochthonous Nerello Mascalese from over 100 years old (root true) vines starts with a sparkling ruby garnet and continues with an enchanting raspberry aroma, followed by fine spicy notes (ginger, pimento, clove). Compact, dense, full fruity, tannic on the palate, always very elegant and smooth. Traces of salt and flint in the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Love the rich aromas of dried fruits (like dried strawberries). Hints of cedar and sandalwood as well. Full-bodied, layered and tannic with fantastic depth and intensity. Needs two or three years to soften. Beautiful wine. From vines planted on Etna hillsides 80 to 100 years ago!" James Suckling
"A firm, tightly knit red, showing good density to the ripe black cherry and raspberry fruit, dried fig flavors and ashy mineral details. Fresh and fragrant, with violet and spice box notes. This should open nicely with air or cellaring." Wine Spectator
"Here is one of my favorite Etna overachievers. The 2013 Etna Rosso Vigna Barbagalli was born in a more-challenging vintage here on the volcano, but it sails smoothly through any possible weakness. This is a magnificent expression from Southern Italy. The wine has the mild consistency and light garnet color of a Burgundian Pinot Noir. But the bouquet is anything but understated. It delivers powerful aromas of wild berry, balsam herb, licorice and those distinctive touches of volcano ash. In the mouth, the wine shows smooth and long silkiness. This is a magnificent red wine from Etna." Robert Parker

“Vigna Barbagalli” Rosso Etna DOC 2017
This single-varietal, authochtonous Nerello Mascalese from vines that are more than 100 years old (with real roots) starts with a sparkling ruby-garnet colour and follows up impressively with a ravishing raspberry aroma, followed by fine spicy notes (ginger, allspice, clove). Compact, dense, full-fruited, tannic on the palate, yet always highly elegant and supple. Traces of salt and flint on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby with garnet accent. Multi-layered nose of dried currant, rosehip, lots of herbal spice, juniper, sea buckthorn, delicate malt coffee in the background. Stretches out a juicy dress, with lots of present fruit, fine tannin, compact and with a straight structure, noble pressure until the end, keeps coming in the finish." Falstaff
"Layers of smoke, ash, crushed walnuts and cranberries on the nose. It's medium-to full-bodied with sleek, tight tannins. Lots of ripe and dried red fruit on the palate with citrus peel and tobacco, too. Precise and tight finish. Lots of old-vine magic here." James Suckling
"This is the top red wine made by Pietradolce, and its striking black label is meant to underline its importance in the estate portfolio. The 2017 Etna Rosso Barbagalli offers a pretty garnet color and a lean to mid-weight approach. Made with fruit from pre-phylloxera vines from one of the highest elevation vineyards in the appellation (at 950 meters above sea level), this is always a study in elegance, and the integrity of the fruit transcends most problematic vintage variations thanks to the hearty resilience of the vines and their extended root systems. This wine shows composure and equilibrium with an incredibly glossy or silky quality of fruit with berry, smoke, tar and campfire ash. That old-vine concentration and power (with 15% alcohol) also comes through clearly. Only 2,500 bottles were released." Robert Parker

Limitation of 3 articles per customer“Sant’Andrea” Carricante Terre Siciliane IGT 2016
The Carricante grapes of this extremely rare Etna Bianco come from vine blue resistant (pre-phylloxera) vines of a single vineyard of the Etna East slope from 800m altitude. Only one oak barrel is filled each year, the result is less than 2,000 bottles per vintage.
Rich golden yellow with amber accents. Complex and well structured scent of herbs, yellow fruits and flint. In the mouth an indescribable depth with a salty note, fresh fruit and a mineral persistence. In the finale firm and precise, the tension bow is perfectly worked and the long lasting impression is unique! SUPERIORE.DE
"Luminous orange-tinged pink. Perfumed floral nuances complicate strawberry and orange liqueur aromas. Then similar flavors to the aromas in the mouth, characterized by a strong spicy gingery note. Finishes long and dense; this powerful wine is not shy in the flavor or alcohol department (14%) but has a slow-building quality that is very likeable. Made from 100% Nerello Mascalese grown at 700 meters above sea level." Jancis Robinson
"A pure expression of Carricante from pre-Phylloxera vines (with a precious 1,800 bottles made), the 2016 Sant'Andrea displays the depth and structural firmness this Sicilian grape is capable of producing when given time to evolve in the bottle (over 18 months, in this case). Extended skin maceration (with up to ten months of skin contact) adds to the incredible intensity and generous volume of the wine. It opens to an off-gold color and a robust texture that underscores the snappy crunchiness of the grape skins and the fullness of its vinous texture. This grape is not naturally associated with thickness or power, but both are elegantly achieved here. This is a beautifully assembled and contemplated wine that seeks to raise the bar for Etna's versatile Carricante." Robert Parker

“Vigna Barbagalli” Rosso Etna DOC 2017 · MAGNUM in OWC

Large wineries such as Planeta, Tasca d'Almerita, Donnafugata and Firriato have given new prestige to Sicilian viticulture and are still well known today. However, small, up-and-coming companies such as Pietradolce, which concentrate on local grape varieties, are becoming more and more important. The winery, located in the Solicchiata area of the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, on the banks of Mount Etna, has quickly achieved cult status. The Michele and Mario Faro winery team - both passionate wine collectors and known beyond their borders as florists - focus their work on the indigenous grape varieties Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante.
The fruits of Pietradolce grow on an area of eleven hectares at an altitude of 600 to 900 metres in the best locations, which have grown considerably in recent years as a result of acquisitions. The soils are stony and light, contain sandy loam and many mineral elements - a generous gift from the volcano. The vineyards, which are exclusively owned by the family, are divided into different sections, the majority of which are located in the Rampante area and one in the Zottorinoto area. The portfolio of the Sicilian winery also includes two Alberello-cultivated vineyards that are around 80 years old. The vines, as long as they were young, were pulled up at individual bars to support them and, over time, formed free-standing cup-shaped small trees. This form of education has been known since ancient times and is still widespread today in the Mediterranean region. Further more than 50 years old vineyards, also cultivated in Alberello technique, are located between Solicchiata and Passopisciaro on the northern slope of the still frequently active volcano. They are - as it was usual in former times - built with walls of lava stone like an amphitheatre.
Michele and Mario's grapes have been processed in a small but very well-equipped factory in Riposto. A larger production plant is now added in the immediate vicinity of the vineyards. Etna gives Pietradolce wines special characteristics and a unique character. The winery's red and white wines always amaze with their freshness, delicacy and aromatic intensity. They can therefore justifiably be described as jewels of the Sicilian wine industry. SUPERIORE.DE
