“Castello di Bolgheri” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2020
Deep, dark ruby red in colour, with a rich fruit concentrate of cherry, elderberries, wild berries and a pinch of pepper on the nose. Wonderful harmony of supple tannins and fine acidity on the palate, with subtle notes of maraschino cherry and spices. Fine toasted flavours on the long, very elegant finish. One of the most complex and underrated top wines in the region to date. SUPERIORE.DE
"For me, this is still a totally underrated wine that is an attractive alternative to the superstars for the price-conscious. Elegant, mineral-influenced bouquet with fine Cabernet spice, cassis, red plums and dark red fruits, also mineral-earthy notes. Lots of freshness with a fine reduction. Elegant and finely woven on the medium-bodied palate, a real ballerina, precise tannins that lay beautifully over the tightly woven body, very powerful with lots of freshness in the mid-palate and final. Super animating." Weinwisser
"Notes of roasted spices, dark cedar, cocoa and bark with a mix of red and blue fruits in the background. Full, compact and slightly chewy with firm, vertical tannins. Spicy, ripe and intense, but well integrated and balanced with tension and persistence. Needs some more time in the bottle." James Suckling
"An intense nose of cassis with floral hints and black olives is enhanced by balsamic depth. There's sucrosity on the chewy, lively and youthful palate. The tannins seems to be grainy, extracted, still to condense but ripe, with crisp balancing acidity. The sweetness of the fruit, a bit confected, is balanced by a kind of bitter finish." Decanter
"This red wine starts with abundant ferrous and spicy aromas and flavours of eucalyptus, wild rosemary and mineral notes framing the core of pure blackcurrant and blackberry. Taut and firmly built, with a beautiful length. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot." Wine Spectator
"The nose is reminiscent of a sun-soaked seafaring adventure, with savoury notes of dried meat from the hold, leather belts and boots mingling with a rich fruitiness and the salty sea air. The rich, fruity, chocolaty palate eventually turns savoury, and that savouriness dances with searing acidity to extend the finish." Wine Enthusiast
"The Castello di Bolgheri 2020 Bolgheri Superiore shows hints of spicy green with peppercorns, bay leaf, baked plums and blackberry jam. The oak adds sweetness with cinnamon and nutmeg, over a very generous mouthfeel with thick, chalky tannins that need a few more years of bottle age. This wine is more intense on the palate than on the nose. The effect is almost brawny or combative, making this wine an ideal companion for hearty winter dishes." Wine Advocate
"Very solid Bolgheri Superiore, from the Castello, the work in "reduction" and ageing in large barrels, gives a glimpse into the future. Cabernet Sauvignon, elegance on the nose, blueberry, laurel and rhubarb, with mentholated notes. Salty and fruity, great length." Luca Gardini

The winery Castello di Bolgheri is the historical nucleus of the winegrowing around Bolgheri. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Viale di San Guido, which runs dead straight, is almost five kilometres long and is decorated on both sides with around 2,000 cypress trees. Today, the vineyards are spread around the medieval village on a total area of 1,220 hectares, of which 1,050 hectares are used for the production of Bolgheri DOC. A small, but fine group of winegrowers cavort in the cultivation area, which provides for a moderate production.
Since 1984 the Castello di Bolgheri has owned 130 hectares of land. Almost 40 percent of the area is planted with vines, all of which are located in the northern part of Bolgheri DOC. The area is well known for its favourable terroir. – also due to the natural drainage. The origins of the winery date back to the 13th century. Since then the castle has belonged to the Count della Gherardesca family, who also resided there. The Castello now belongs to the same family in the 30th generation. The wine cellar was built in the middle of the 18th century directly behind the castle.
Countess Franca Spalletti Trivelli inherited the Castello in 1984 from her mother, Countess Alessandra della Gherardesca. When she died two years later, it was time for a new planting of the vines and a partial marketing of the wines. Since the death of Countess Franca Spalletti Trivelli in 2010, his son Conte Federico Zileri dal Verme has been the sole owner of the estate.
In 1997, the vineyards were planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot, varieties typical of Bolgheri. The cultivated areas are located around the wine village in the immediate vicinity of the vineyards of Sassicaia and Ornellaia. The most important wine today is the Castello di Bolgheri Superiore, which is aged in barrels for 24 months. The first vintage of this dark purple, elegant and deep drop was first sold in 2004 as Annata 2001.
Count Federico Zileri Dal Verme, together with the oenologist Alessandro Dondi from South Tyrol, today looks after the vineyards and cellars. Federico was also appointed President of the Consorzio Bolgheri DOC in April 2013. He succeeded Marchese Nicoló Incisa della Rocchetta, whose family produces the cult wine Sassicaia in the Tenuta San Guido. The legacy of Castelli di Bolgheri has set itself the ambitious goal of making wines from the quality region famous throughout the world beyond Italy. SUPERIORE.DE
