Curtain up on a truly grand Bolgheri debut: Barinca is a single-varietal Cabernet Franc that thrives on the limestone- and gravel-rich hills north of Bolgheri – right between its renowned neighbours, Ornellaia and Tenuta San Guido. Under the guidance of Conte Federico Zileri dal Verme, the 30th generation of the Gherardesca family, the grapes are harvested by hand in mid-September, destemmed and fermented spontaneously in open wooden vats in the historic vaulted cellar. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for 18 months inLiters and large 35hl oak casks, before being bottled in a strictly limited edition of 2,400 bottles and 200 magnums and left to age in the bottle until release.

In the glass, Barinca displays a deep ruby red colour with violet highlights and exudes an intense bouquet of cassis, wild berries, tobacco and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it reveals fine-grained, precise tannins, cool minerality and a long, elegant finish. Good to know: Cabernet Franc is and remains an exciting rarity in Italy, and in Bolgheri in particular, thanks to the cool nights and mineral-rich soil, it showcases its delicate spice, elegant fruit and velvety tannin structure to great effect.
