• "Costa di Giulia" Bianco Bolgheri DOC 2018

“Costa di Giulia” Bianco Bolgheri DOC 2018

Independent, full of character - an almost exotic white wine from the noble Bolgheri DOC appellation. Smells of blossoms, peach and melon and shows the mineral richness of the ancient grape variety Vermentino and the wonderfully fresh gooseberry aroma of Sauvignon Blanc on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2018 Costa di Giulia, Satta's Vermentino/Sauvignon blend, offers a striking combination of textural richness and freshness. Apricot, peach, white flowers, mint and lemon peel are beautifully delineated throughout. Sculpted and vibrant, with terrific energy, the 2018 has much to recommend it. Full of classic Maremma richness, the 2018 is one of the best vintages of the Costa di Giulia I can remember tasting." Vinous

    • "Cavaliere" Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

      “Cavaliere” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

Brilliant dark ruby, intense and inviting nose with a pronounced aroma of dark fruits, especially blackberry, followed by some liquorice. Firm and gripping on the palate with taut tannins, the Cavaliere shows his animating (Sangiovese) style in the course and keeps a good pressure until the long final. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sangiovese pure sorter, aged 24 months in used barriques: A bewitching nose of ripe berries and leather, also floral components; the base harmonious, the vife acidity and the tannin in balance, the finish to notes of fresh plums. "I like it with its elegant design. Vinum

"Michele and Giacomo Satta have been producing this flagship Sangiovese from Bolgheri since the appellation's inception. Despite officially not being included in the DOC because of the use of 100% Sangiovese, this is still an iconic wine of Tuscany. From this year, researching the fragrance of fruit, they have started to vinify one-third of the harvest with whole clusters. The wine is pale ruby in colour, expressive of delicious and precise raspberry fruit with roasted nut toastiness. It shows great balance between its tight-knit structure of ripe tannins and crisp acidity." Decanter

"Michele Satta remains committed to the Sangiovese grape and may be the only producer in the Bolgheri appellation to produce a 100% expression of the mighty Tuscan grape. The 2016 Cavaliere pours from the bottle with a medium-dark appearance. The bouquet offers tertiary tones of leather and smoked bresaola followed by potting soil or tilled earth. This hot-climate expression shows a dark and savory side of Sangiovese." Robert Parker

"A very spicy red, driven by herbal undertones that guide dark plums and dark cherries forward. Chewy and structured palate that remains rich and decadent." James Suckling

"This is a big, dark, meaty and profound red. The 2015 Bolgheri Superiore I Castagni sings out with a baritone voice of leather, spice and dark fruit and broods with smoke and tar. What really sets it apart are the interesting notes of pecorino or Parmesan cheese rind. This Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Teroldego blend is aged in oak for 24 months." Robert Parker

    • "Marianova" Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2016

      “Marianova” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2016

This is the second vintage of the currently only Bolgheri Superiore, which is produced apart from the classic French Bordeaux grape varieties. It consists of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Syrah. Two grape varieties that the Sattas have studied for several decades and whose quality has convinced us and the international critics for many years. Marianova combines great aromatic breadth with a gigantic drinking pleasure and at the same time underlines the great individuality of the winery like no other wine.

Bright ruby red. In the nose a potpourri of spicy notes: spicy the Syrah and crisp the Sangiovese. Small red ripe berries and some blackberry essence mix with moist soil, smoke, tree bark and tar. This exceptional wine is carried by a bouquet of dark fruits and a fresh acidity, its impressive finish is infinitely long and powerful. SUPERIORE.DE

"3250 bottles are pressed by this Sangiovese and Syrah selection in its second vintage: an enchanting bouquet of cherries and spices; a smooth course with very well integrated powerful tannins and invigorating acidity, shows elegance until the final. Vinum

"Brilliant ruby violet with a slightly bright edge. A lot of present fruit, like mulberries and blueberries, in addition dark cherries, some spicy macchia smoke. A dense tannin with a sweet core, develops for a long time with a lot of pressure, tobacco in the final." Falstaff

"Marianova is the first Bolgheri Superiore to be made without any Bordeaux varietals. Instead it's a 50/50 blend of Syrah and Sangiovese, the idea of Michele Satta’s son Giacomo, first produced in 2015. Ruby red and restrained, it's focussed on vibrant raspberry and cherry aromas layered with indian spice notes and a touch of leathery character. It shows a firm yet ripe tannic structure with chewy acidity and a great savoury finish of toasted notes and prunes." Decanter

"Aromas of currants, crushed berries and walnuts, as well as chocolate. Full body, juicy tannins and beautiful fruit at the end. Big wine that needs time to soften. A blend of sangiovese and syrah." James Suckling

"On first nose, the 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Marianova (equal parts Syrah and Sangiovese) shows savory and barbecue-like aromas with teriyaki sauce and hickory smoke followed by plummy fruit and blackberry preserves. There is a note of sweetness with lots of spice, leather and tobacco at the edges. Of Michele Satta's releases, this wine is the most unlike him in that it is the most contemporary and enriched. This is the second vintage of Marianova (the winery’s latest creation) to be released." Robert Parker

    About the winemakers
    Michele Satta
    Tuscany | Bolgheri
    Michele Satta

An important difference between Michele Satta and other big names like Ornellaia, Sassicaia or Grattamacco is that the determined and very likeable wine producer in Bolgheri runs the oldest winery that belongs to a winemaker. Satta founded its winery in Castagneto Carducci at a time when wine-growing in the Tuscan region was in its infancy and great successes were still to come. The path taken by the innovative winemaker was new in Bolgheri at the time. Thus he - supported by his wife Lucy from the very beginning in his decisions - not only focused on the international varieties Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah, but also on the noble Sangiovese vine. The first harvest in 1990 showed how great their potential was. Nevertheless, this fascinating grape variety is still not very widespread in the still rather young growing area.

Having purchased the land, bought the first vineyards in 1988, planted the first plants and set up a functional cellar, Michele Satta soon began to enlarge and enrich his initially still very small vine kingdom. In 1991 the top vineyards Castagni, Poderini, La Torre, Vignanuova and Costa di Giulia were added, as well as another ten hectares. All vineyards are managed by a team with a lot of personal dedication. They look more like a lovingly maintained suburban garden than an agricultural area. After the expansion, the wines of the bottle battery, which is now wide with nine products, steadily improved in quality. All the grape varieties are vinified and matured separately in the cellar before being used later for wines such as the Bolgheri Rosso Piastraia, often award-winning and consisting equally of Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese.

The Kreszenzen pressed by Michele Satta - some of them unpolished and rich in tannins - are perceived by wine lovers as authentic and expressive. Sometimes they are overripe, sometimes they are unripe. Hardly any wine shows a stylistic consistency over the years. Therefore, it is often difficult to tell which plant is the flagship of the winegrower who stands steadfastly by his convictions and sometimes swims against the current. If, on the other hand, the prices are the sole yardstick, the Piastraia and the Bolgheri Rosso Superiore I Castagni are the top products of the house. Last but not least: Wine and culture are closely linked, according to the efficient wine maker Satta. That's why the winery also becomes a small concert stage from time to time. SUPERIORE.DE

"Meanwhile Michele Satta belongs to the renowned enterprises of the cultivation zone. His creatures understand well how to interpret the potential of the terroir in a stylistically original way."Gambero Rosso
