Michele Satta planted his first vines in Castagneto Carducci in 1991. No master plan, no blueprint from outside. Just the conviction that this soil, this sea air, this Tuscan stubbornness can do more than what Bolgheri was already capable of back then. Piastraia was the result. In bottle since 1994, a Bolgheri Superiore since 2012 – and 2023: the thirtieth vintage. Thirty vintages of observation, correction, refinement and always on course for excellence. The blend – cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc – ferments separately in conical concrete vats, exclusively with wild yeasts. No intervention, no shortcuts. 18 to 24 months in French barriques, one fifth of which is new – subtle framing, no dominance.
What lands in the glass is dark ruby red, dense and bright at the same time. The nose opens with black berries, cassis and plum, including Mediterranean herbs, graphite and a hint of leather. Full-bodied and silky on the palate, with precise tannins and a freshness that never makes the wine heavy despite its weight. Long, balsamic finish. Thirty years of experience – and the independence to utilise it as only someone who knows Bolgheri from the inside can. Michele Satta helped plant the Ornellaia vineyards back then. "The 2023 Bolgheri Rosso Piastraia is sensual and flattering from the start. Soft contours envelop a core of dark blue/purple-coloured fruit. This is followed by floral and spicy notes and a kiss of French oak that stylishly rounds off the whole. Giacomo Motta has used a little more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend and eliminated the Sangiovese, while retaining the Cabernet Franc, which was introduced in 2022 - all choices that emphasise the nuances." "The Michele Satta 2023 Bolgheri Superiore Piastraia is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and is fermented and aged in barriques with 40% new oak. This is the first vintage of Piastraia made without Sangiovese in the blend, which represents a remarkable stylistic evolution of the wine. The 2023 shows sweet fruit flavours of blackberry jam accompanied by lightly integrated spices and smoke. With its excellent balance and poise, this wine represents a confident and successful effort from one of Bolgheri's founding winemakers." Wine Advocate
