![Riesling Trentino DOC 2025]()
Riesling Trentino DOC 2025
Riesling (Riesing renano, not Riesling italico) is regarded as the soul of Northern Europe – moselle, Rhine, Alsace. The fact that it finds a completely unique voice in the hills of Trentino is down to two men who started out in Faedo in 1975, and two soils that could hardly be more different. In Cembra, Maso Besleri, Località Val Bona, the vines grow on volcanic porphyry – —dark, grainy, rich in rounded pebbles. The slopes have a gradient of up to 50 per cent: heroic in every respect, Guyot training, 6,000 vines per hectare. In Faedo, Località Palai, the soil is the exact opposite: limestone and dolomite of marine origin, sedimentary, light in colour and providing structure.

![Pinot Nero Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2025]()
Pinot Nero Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2025
700 metres. That is the altitude at which one of Pojer e Sandri’s two Pinot Noir vineyards is situated – in Palai, south-facing, on local limestone soil, swept by the Ora del Garda. For Pinot Nero in Trentino, this is exceptionally high. Long, cool nights, marked temperature fluctuations, and a slow ripening process that gives the grape variety exactly the time it needs to develop elegance and freshness. The second vineyard is in Faedo itself, in Località Rocol, at 300 metres – lower, warmer, and more full-bodied. Together, these two sites produce a Pinot Nero that fully embodies Faedo. Since 2002, the winery has been using a proprietary, patented process: Iperriduzione – the entire processing of the grapes takes place without oxygen, exclusively in stainless steel tanks. No external intervention – the grape’s natural protective compounds do the work. Fresh, clear, consistent.

Traminer aromatico Trentino DOC 2025
In 1975, Mario Pojer and Fiorentino Sandri purchased two hectares of vineyards in Faedo, a hill situated between the Adige Valley and the Val di Cembra. Many were sceptical: Faedo was considered unsuitable for quality winegrowing. The pair remained undeterred. Today, Faedo is one of Trentino’s most sought-after wine-growing sites – and Pojer e Sandri is one of Italy’s most innovative wineries. The Traminer is grown on two sites: Faedo, Località Coveli, at 300 metres, south-west facing, on porphyritic-volcanic soil with sandy layers of dark, gravel-rich rock. And Cembra, Località Valbona, at 450 metres – cooler, providing structure. The Ora del Garda, the daily wind from Lake Garda, ventilates the vineyards and keeps the aromas fresh. Gewürztraminer from Alsatian clones, Pergoletta Trentina Aperta and Guyot, 6,000 to 6,500 vines per hectare. Vinification follows a principle developed in-house: grape washing and pressing in a controlled atmosphere – without any exogenous antioxidants. The grape variety speaks for itself; nothing masks it.

“Monogramma” Traminer aromatico Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2021
Monogramma is a philosophy: we wait. Whilst standard Traminer is harvested at the usual stage of ripeness, Mario Pojer and Fiorentino Sandri leave their best plots on the vine for a further 10 to 12 days. What happens during this time is not overripeness – ; it is a concentration, a densification of the aromas, a slow transformation of fresh fruit into something more complex. Gewürztraminer is, in any case, one of the most expressive grape varieties in the world. Normally: rose, peach, lychee, elderflower – — explosive, direct, immediate. In the Spätlese selection from the plots in Faedo/Coveli (300m) and Cembra (450m), an additional dimension emerges: tropical fruit, spices, a deep, rich texture that the wine develops through the late harvest. The house method remains the same: washing the grapes, pressing in a controlled atmosphere without oxygen. What ends up in the glass is solely a reflection of the place and the time.

Luigi Veronelli was regarded as Italy’s most influential wine critic of the 20th century. In the 1970s, he named the Müller-Thurgau from Pojer e Sandri’s Località Palai vineyard his absolute benchmark wine for the variety. Mario Pojer recalls: “Today, 50 years on, we pay tribute to the variety that has found its ideal habitat.” Fifty years later – the character remains the same. The conviction remains. Palai lies at 700 metres. This is the estate’s highest vineyard – the very same that gives Pinot Noir its alpine coolness and Riesling its precision! For Müller-Thurgau, it is the ideal terroir: a long growing season, cool nights, pronounced temperature variation, chalky soils, and the breeze of the Ora del Garda.

Fayé – is the old dialect name for Faedo. The place that is the focus of everything here bears its oldest name in this wine. And the wine embodies the place: on the labels, in the terroir, in the choice of grape varieties blended here. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon sets the framework: structure, dark fruit, longevity. Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Lagrein fill it out – and that is the crucial point. For Lagrein is no international guest. It is indigenous, at home exclusively in Trentino-South Tyrol, and it gives Fayé an identity that no pure Bordeaux cuvée could ever have. A red wine that is rooted in the international scene yet remains deeply rooted in its local terroir.

When Fiorentino Sandri inherited two hectares of vineyards in 1975 at the age of twenty-four, and Mario Pojer – three years his junior – had just completed his degree in oenology, no one could have imagined that this would give rise to one of the most successful partnerships in Italian winemaking. What began with a Müller-Thurgau called "Palai" developed over five decades into a success story that put Trentino on the map far beyond the country’s borders.
The original two hectares grew to 35 hectares of vineyards, and the two friends became pioneers. Whether it be fungus-resistant grape varieties, sustainable viticulture, innovative winemaking techniques or projects such as the legendary "Zero Infinito" – Mario Pojer and Fiorentino Sandri have always been among those winemakers who preferred to break new ground rather than follow existing trends.
Innovation from the mountains
The vineyards are spread across Faedo, San Michele all’Adige and the Cembra Valley at altitudes of up to 900 metres. Calcareous soils, volcanic terraces and the cooling Ora breeze from Lake Garda create ideal conditions for white and red wines with distinctive character. Müller-Thurgau, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Nero and the indigenous Nosiola form the foundation of a range that has stood for precision, originality and a spirit of experimentation for decades.
This spirit of innovation continues to shape the winery’s work to this day. Technical challenges have never been viewed as obstacles, but rather as an invitation to think creatively. This led, for example, to the creation of the famous ‘grape washer’, which removes residues from the grape skins whilst preserving the natural yeasts. The same curiosity later led to the development of "Zero Infinito", a sparkling wine made from Solaris grapes, which contains no sulphur, selected yeasts, fining agents or filtration, and is thus still regarded today as one of the most consistent projects in Italian viticulture.
A major chapter comes to an end – the story continues
Fifty years after the company was founded, a new chapter is set to begin in 2026. Mario Pojer and Fiorentino Sandri have decided to go their separate ways professionally from now on. The decision was made in a spirit of mutual respect and with a shared desire to carry both families’ life’s work into the future.
The name Pojer e Sandri will remain and will be carried on by Fiorentino Sandri together with his children, Elisa and Federico. The well-known wines, labels and the existing philosophy on quality will remain unchanged. Meanwhile, Mario Pojer is already working on his next project in the Cembra Valley. Together with his son Matteo, he is gradually establishing a new winery, whose first wines are expected to be released from the 2026 vintage onwards.
So whilst this marks the end of one of the most distinctive partnerships in Italian winemaking, it does not spell the end of the story behind it. On the contrary: a shared dream is now giving rise to two independent projects for the future. For wine lovers, this means one thing above all else – the chance to witness the next chapters in the stories of two extraordinary winemaking families right from the start. SUPERIORE.DE
