Brilliant ruby red. In the bouquet plum, currant, dried cherry and leather. On the palate it is full of juice and power, with a wonderfully harmonious aroma of small red fruits, Mediterranean spices and a restrained tannin structure. A wonderful and well-balanced representative from Bolgheri, with an impressive long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

“Grattamacco” Vermentino Bolgheri DOC 2017 (BIO)

High-quality and rare Vermentino of straw yellow colour and a bouquet of white fruits and hazelnut. On the palate floral-fresh, round and ripe. The well-dosed use of wood gives the wine a fine creamy texture. A persistent, highly elegant Bolgheri Bianco for special occasions. SUPERIORE.DE

“L’Alberello” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2015 (BIO)

L'Alberello is a beautiful Cabernet from Bolgheri with warm, dark wet aromas, herbs, coffee and tobacco. Remarkably full and juicy on the palate, long, silky and elegant in the finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"There's a pretty balance here between ripe and fresh fruit and firm and silky tannins. Medium to full body and a bright finish. Should develop nicely." James Suckling

"Grattamacco claims the distinction of having planted the first head-trained alberello vineyard in the Bolgheri area, in the 1970s, and its fruit has produced a long line of wines wines rated 90+. The 2015 Bolgheri Superiore l'Alberello is among the best I have sampled. The wine opens to harmonious notes of smoke and tar and shows elegant mineral definition with sweet oak spice and lots of rich dark fruit at its core. The blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. A mere 8,000 bottles were produced." Robert Parker

    • "L'Alberello" Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2016 (BIO)

“L’Alberello” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2016 (BIO)

L'Alberello is a beautiful Cabernet from Bolgheri with warm, dark wet aromas, herbs, coffee and tobacco. Remarkably full and juicy on the palate, long, silky and elegant in the finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Expressive and typical aromas of black currant, cedar, olive, iron and tobacco mark this medium-bodied and balanced red, well-rippled with tannins. Offers a fine, lingering aftertaste of fruit, cedar and mineral." Wine Spectator

"Alberello is the Italian name for bush vines, one of the most undervalued training systems in Tuscany. Employed by Grattamacco for austere varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the result is often outstanding. Cassis, cherry kernel and leafy aromas come before a hint of minerality. On the palate it shows firm, grainy tannins without any dryness at the end, where instead it opens up to reveal sweet toasted tobacco and straw notes. This will last well thanks to its layered profile and great balance." Decanter

"I love the herbal complexity with dark brambleberries, fresh herbs and cedar. Medium to full body, juicy and endearing tannins and a floral finish. From organically grown grapes." James Suckling

"This wine delivers an exceptional quality of fruit. The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore l'Alberello is vinous and raw with an unmistakably authentic quality that gives this wine character and a specific territorial identity. You taste the flavors of the Tuscan Coast with that "macchia mediterrana," or Mediterranean brush, with ripe cherry, plum, black olive and sweet cinnamon spice. At this young stage, the wine's oak imprint is evident, but we can look forward to this relaxing and tapering down with more bottle age." Robert Parker

    • "Grattamacco" Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2014 (BIO)

“Grattamacco” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2014 (BIO)

Fine, elegant bouquet with fruit aromas, notes of coffee and complex spice aromas. The taste is long-lasting, the acidity in perfect balance with tannin and body. A wine with a great personality, suitable for long ageing, but also a great pleasure in its youth. SUPERIORE.DE

"Here is another one of those vintage-defying wines to emerge from a very challenging growing season with lots of rain and below average temperatures. The 2014 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco benefits from extreme fruit selection and careful management in the winery. This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese from one of the most celebrated estates on the Tuscan Coast. The bouquet is full and generous. It peels back with thick intensity revealing luscious tones of blackberry fruit with spice, leather and tobacco. There is structural firmness here but the tannins are well integrated within the fleshiness of the wine." Robert Parker

"This is bright, offering ripe cherry, currant, spice and tobacco flavors. Firm yet mouthwatering, with fine equilibrium and a long, toast- and spice-tinged finish. Very refreshing." Wine Spectator

Sparkling ruby red. Fine, elegant bouquet with fruit aromas, notes of coffee and complex spice aromas. The taste is long-lasting, the acidity in perfect balance to tannin and body. A wine with great personality, suitable for a long ageing, but also in its youth already a great pleasure. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant, intense ruby red with a fine shimmer. Opened with notes of tobacco, blueberry and blackberry, followed by cinnamon. Glides over the palate like velvet, much fine-meshed tannin, many layers, spreads in all directions, much dark fruit, long aftertaste." Falstaff

"Mid-deep ruby-purple. Torrefied, chocolate oak, with dried tobacco, subtle cedar and rich, black cherry. Sweet, black-cherry palate, counterbalanced by dark chocolate and espresso oak, and underpinned by compact, ripe, very fine, firm tannins. Creamy finish." Jancis Robinson

"So much rosemary and tobacco, highlighting the currants and other fruit on the nose. Medium body and firm, silky tannins. Balanced and fresh finish. Remains subtle and complex." James Suckling

"The aromas offer a subtle mix of black currant, violet, cedar, iron and sweet spices, evolving into an elegant profile, with superb balance and harmony. Complex and intense, this seems approachable even at this early stage, yet it will only gain with time in the bottle." Wine Spectator

"Grattamacco is one of the highest estates in Bolgheri, located just beneath the village of Castagneto Carducci. Sangiovese gives the wine a particular freshness and drinkability, rejuvenating the tension of the classic Bordeaux varieties. In 2016, Grattamacco has exceeded itself, with aromas of elegant, youthful red currant fruits integrated with citrus notes and cedar wood. On the palate the wine is perfectly balanced, and more immediately drinkable than some of the other top samples. It has delicious tension and ripeness, with a mediterranean character and a hint of kiwi on the finish." Decanter

    • "Grattamacco" Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2016 (BIO) <br>6 Bottles in OWC

“Grattamacco” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2016 (BIO) · 6 Bottles in OWC

    About the winemakers

    Grattamacco

The Grattamacco winery was founded in 1977 between the villages of Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri. Claudio Tipa, born in Sicily and a former industrialist, has been managing the Grattamacco estate since 2002 - first as a tenant - now as an owner with a great deal of passion and high competence in the Bolgheri noble cultivation area. It is part of his own small wine kingdom Colle Massari Spa.
The Tuscan company, in which he is supported by his wife Maria and sister Maria-Iris, also includes Tipa's own vineyards Poggio di Sotto in the Montalcino area and Colle Massari in the Maremma. Those who visit Grattamacco, situated on a hill between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, will be rewarded with a magnificent panorama of the Tuscan coast. The very attractive farm extends over 35 hectares, of which a good 13 hectares are planted with vines and three with olives. The vineyard, surrounded by 1,200 hectares of forest, is a model for the entire cultivation zone. Its flagship is the magnificent Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco, which is regularly praised by wine critics.

The landowner of the Podere Grattamacco is considered by experts to be one of the most conscientious and well organised winegrowers in Italian viticulture. Since Tipa has been operating the estate, the elegant wines of the broad range have gained in fascination and stylistic definition, according to the wine tasters. Previously, the owner had pioneered Bolgheri for more than 20 years and had played a decisive role in making it a region of great red wines. Since Claudio Tipa immediately faced the fierce competition in the wine market after his entry, the small winery has discarded its character as a noble niche company in the meantime.

Cabernet Sauvignon is mainly cultivated on the vineyard hills, which reach a height of around 100 metres above sea level (around 60 per cent). Smaller lots are planted with Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Only Vermentino is cultivated on the slopes as a white grape variety. The soils of the Grattamacco vineyards are sandy at lower altitudes, with limestone and marl in higher altitudes.

In the cellar, the utmost care is taken down to the smallest detail. The hand-picked grapes ferment in small wooden vats. The farsighted winery owner deliberately refrains from adding pure yeast to control fermentation. The malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously and ends after the wine has already been transferred into barrique barrels. All the grape varieties are vinified separately in the estate until the cuvées are produced. SUPERIORE.DE

"Although Grattamacco was founded in the 1970s and can be considered a long-established company in Bolgheri, it does not lack dynamism and surprising developments. Gambero Rosso
