      Bolgheri Rosso DOC 2019 (BIO)

Bright ruby red. In the bouquet plum, currant, dried cherry and leather. On the palate then full of juice and power, wonderfully harmonious aromas of small red fruits, Mediterranean spices and a bridled tannin framework. A wonderful and well-balanced representative from Bolgheri, which also has an impressively long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

“Grattamacco” Vermentino Bolgheri DOC 2018 (BIO)

High quality and rare Vermentino of straw-yellow colour and a bouquet of white fruits and hazelnut. On the palate flowery fresh, round and ripe. The well-dosed use of wood gives the wine a fine creamy texture. A persistent, highly elegant Bolgheri Bianco for special occasions. SUPERIORE.DE

"Fragrant and multi-layered, flint and elegant wood spice, complex, after peach and candied lemon peel. Creamy melt, rich body, spreads out widely, shows fine play between wood spice and lemon, salty in the aftertaste." Falstaff

    • "L'Alberello" Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2017 (BIO)

“L’Alberello” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2017 (BIO)

L'Alberello is a beautiful Bolgheri Superiore made primarily from Cabernet. Starts fresh and vehement with warm, dark fruit aromas, then opens up further with a bouquet of herbs, coffee and a pinch of pepper. Remarkably polished and juicy on the palate, everything is in balance, silky and very charismatic on the long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, sparkling ruby with a slight garnet tongue. Intense and clearly marked nose, lush with elderberries and blueberries, lots of tobacco, some cardamom, shows nice game. Round and lush on the attack, opens with fine-mesh tannin, lots of juicy fruit." Falstaff

"The 2017 Bolgheri Superiore l'Alberello shows a fine and seamless nature that defies this challenging vintage. The vines are planted according to a special spacing method called "settonce" in Italian. This means that each alberello plant (or head pruned vine) is equidistant to the next. In theory, this brings more light and favors even ripening. Indeed, "even" is the word that first comes to mind. The intensity and the dark fruit aromas are nicely spaced out and level." Robert Parker

"Alberello is the classic Bordeaux blend of Grattamacco in Bolgheri, sourced from a 2ha vineyard planted with bush vines ('alberello'). Clay and earth aromas are joined by intense floral notes of violet. It's a muscular wine, large and powerful, smooth and just chalky on the finish, with an amazing mineral vibrancy." Decanter

    • "Grattamacco 35 anni" Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2017 (BIO)

“Grattamacco 35 anni” Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2017 (BIO)

Sparkling ruby red. Fine, elegant bouquet with fruit aromas, notes of coffee and complex spice aromas. The taste is long-lasting, the acidity in perfect balance with tannin and body. A wine with great personality, suitable for long ageing, but also in its youth already a delight. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, rich ruby red. Appealing and clearly marked nose with notes of ripe dark cherries, blackberries and currants. Very juicy and with good tension on the palate, fine, grippy tannin, well-defined, compact berry fruit, firm pressure on the final." Falstaff

"A beautiful red with berry, spice, light chocolate and clove. Medium-to full-bodied with round tannins and a flavorful finish. Such finesse and beauty for this hot vintage." James Suckling

"Congratulations to Grattamacco on the 35th anniversary of this iconic wine. The fruit represents a special selection from over 25 hectares of vines planted in a mix of soils with clay, sandstone, limestone marl and flysch. In fact, the territorial impact on the wine's bouquet is strong with dusty or salty notes that frame dark fruit, dried cherry and toasted spice. This wine shows polished elegance, and that's something that was not easy to achieve in this hot vintage." Robert Parker

"The contribution of Sangiovese in the blend of Grattamacco makes it a distinctive Bolgheri Superiore. If on the nose Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are prevailing with cassis fruit, cedar and kiwi, full of balsamic depth, the indigenous grape pushes the fragrance of the wine with chewy wild fruit flavours. An exceptional expression in the hot vintage. Complex and layered, without any foursquare character, this organic wine is waiting for extra complexity over its liquorice finish." Decanter

"Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese in a blend: exquisite notes of cassis, raspberries and violets; supple construction with tight tannins, plenty of melt, juice and length. Excellent with a roast veal kidney with mushrooms." Vinum

"Shiny, intense ruby red with fine shimmer. Opens with notes after tobacco, much blueberry and blackberry, behind it cinnamon. Glides over the palate like velvet, lots of fine-meshed tannin, many layers, spreads out in all directions, lots of dark fruit, long finish." Falstaff

"Mid-deep ruby-purple. Torrefied, chocolate oak, with dried tobacco, subtle cedar and rich, black cherry. Sweet, black-cherry palate, counterbalanced by dark chocolate and espresso oak, and underpinned by compact, ripe, very fine, firm tannins. Creamy finish." Jancis Robinson

"So much rosemary and tobacco, highlighting the currants and other fruit on the nose. Medium body and firm, silky tannins. Balanced and fresh finish. Remains subtle and complex." James Suckling

"The aromas offer a subtle mix of black currant, violet, cedar, iron and sweet spices, evolving into an elegant profile, with superb balance and harmony. Complex and intense, this seems approachable even at this early stage, yet it will only gain with time in the bottle." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco is a subtle and elegant wine with decisive energy and forward momentum. The blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Sangiovese, and the fruit is sourced from across the best sites in the estate's various vineyard holdings. The bouquet opens to delicate berry and wild cherry and then moves over to warmer Mediterranean tones of rosemary, pressed flower and gardening soil. To the palate, the wine shows depth and medium consistency that prizes smoothness, texture and length. Elegance is the big takeaway." Robert Parker

"Grattamacco is one of the highest estates in Bolgheri, located just beneath the village of Castagneto Carducci. Sangiovese gives the wine a particular freshness and drinkability, rejuvenating the tension of the classic Bordeaux varieties. In 2016, Grattamacco has exceeded itself, with aromas of elegant, youthful red currant fruits integrated with citrus notes and cedar wood. On the palate the wine is perfectly balanced, and more immediately drinkable than some of the other top samples. It has delicious tension and ripeness, with a mediterranean character and a hint of kiwi on the finish." Decanter

    About the winemakersGrattamaccoTuscany | Bolgheri
    Grattamacco

The Grattamacco winery was founded in 1977 between the villages of Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri. Claudio Tipa, born in Sicily and a former industrialist, has been managing the Grattamacco estate since 2002 - first as a tenant - now as an owner with a great deal of passion and high competence in the Bolgheri noble cultivation area. It is part of his own small wine kingdom Colle Massari Spa.
The Tuscan company, in which he is supported by his wife Maria and sister Maria-Iris, also includes Tipa's own vineyards Poggio di Sotto in the Montalcino area and Colle Massari in the Maremma. Those who visit Grattamacco, situated on a hill between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, will be rewarded with a magnificent panorama of the Tuscan coast. The very attractive farm extends over 35 hectares, of which a good 13 hectares are planted with vines and three with olives. The vineyard, surrounded by 1,200 hectares of forest, is a model for the entire cultivation zone. Its flagship is the magnificent Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco, which is regularly praised by wine critics.

The landowner of the Podere Grattamacco is considered by experts to be one of the most conscientious and well organised winegrowers in Italian viticulture. Since Tipa has been operating the estate, the elegant wines of the broad range have gained in fascination and stylistic definition, according to the wine tasters. Previously, the owner had pioneered Bolgheri for more than 20 years and had played a decisive role in making it a region of great red wines. Since Claudio Tipa immediately faced the fierce competition in the wine market after his entry, the small winery has discarded its character as a noble niche company in the meantime.

Cabernet Sauvignon is mainly cultivated on the vineyard hills, which reach a height of around 100 metres above sea level (around 60 per cent). Smaller lots are planted with Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Only Vermentino is cultivated on the slopes as a white grape variety. The soils of the Grattamacco vineyards are sandy at lower altitudes, with limestone and marl in higher altitudes.

In the cellar, the utmost care is taken down to the smallest detail. The hand-picked grapes ferment in small wooden vats. The farsighted winery owner deliberately refrains from adding pure yeast to control fermentation. The malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously and ends after the wine has already been transferred into barrique barrels. All the grape varieties are vinified separately in the estate until the cuvées are produced. SUPERIORE.DE

"Although Grattamacco was founded in the 1970s and can be considered a long-established company in Bolgheri, it does not lack dynamism and surprising developments. Gambero Rosso
