      Rosso Toscana IGT 2018

Bright ruby red with violet reflexes. In the bouquet notes of fresh berry compote, cherry and spicy hints, in addition sweet cedar and a breath vanilla. In the drink a beautiful texture, rich and filling, with fascinating silky tannins, persistent in the final. SUPERIORE.DE

    • Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2019

      Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2019

Le Chiuse di Sotto's Rosso di Montalcino takes Rosso to a whole new level: on the nose, mineral-tinged black cherry, with damp earth tones, autumn leaves, green stems and a hint of animal musk. Then on the palate, strawberries tending toward cranberry, spice with citrus notes, a touch of tannin and pretty red flowers. The wine delights into the sweeping finish, leaving an impression more reminiscent of a Brunello than a Rosso. Simply stunning. SUPERIORE.DE

"A blend of Sangiovese grapes from Podernovone - which lies at 500 metres above sea level on the southeast hillside of Montalcino with a southwest exposure - and Canalicchio on the northern side of the village. The vines were planted in 1998 for the former vineyard, and in 1989 for the latter. 'Our Rosso is produced by the same grapeas as Brunello,' said Laura Brunelli. This new 2019 bottling is more concentrated than the lighter 2018, and more balanced than the warm 2017. This wine, traditionally aged in large oak vessels for one year, is extremely fresh and not without complexity. Red currants, wild strawberry, black pepper and juniper aromas are followed by a brightness of savoury red fruits on the medium-bodied palate. It has velvety tannins and refreshing, integrated acidity. A really great interpretation of the terroir." Decanter

Deep ruby color, lush notes of cherries, strawberries and sweet oak spice, vanilla and black pepper. • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

Laura Brunelli's Brunello is always a blend of fruit from both sides of Montalcino - the north side and the southeast. Between the two sites there is a mix of slate, sand, clay, tufa and Galestro soil. This is pretty much the entire terroir spectrum of the appellation.

Ruby red with bright brightenings. The bouquet already shows its great class: lush notes of wild cherries, wild strawberries and tar, followed by forest floor and tobacco notes. On the palate, concentrated, spicy and with the classic Sangiovese acidity, which is wonderfully harmoniously integrated. A paradise wine that interprets the elegance and freshness of the Sangiovese grape precisely and extremely enjoyable. SUPERIORE.DE

"Mid ruby. Subdued yet perfumed on the nose with a hint of old leather. Juicy, supple red fruit and bags of chewy tannins. A hugely appealing whole." Jancis Robinson

"This elegant red delivers cherry, iron, leather and tobacco flavors, backed by a vibrant structure. Balanced, with firm, well-proportioned tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish." Wine Spectator

"Rose, new leather, wild herb and dark-skinned-berry aromas emerge from the glass on this fragrant red. Polished and balanced, the elegant, medium-bodied palate reveals Marasca cherry, star anise and ground clove framed in refined tannins and fresh acidity. It's already accessible but promises good mid-term aging." Wine Enthusiast

"In 2015, Laura Brunelli finished a much-needed new cellar that has enabled greater precision in the winemaking and helped lower the estate's carbon footprint. It is a pleasure to finally try this wine from bottle after tasting the components from botti. It has all the plump, fleshy fruit demonstrated during ageing but has also preserved and fused the captivating scents of sweet garden herbs, dark summer blossoms, tomato and earthy truffles. Mouthwatering red plum and black raspberry round out the palate and the tannins are pliable. It's just about ready to go and there's at least a decade of enjoyment to come." Decanter

"Beautiful intensity, but also focus to the nose of this Brunello. Wild strawberries, tar and cherry kernel vie to be heard above a chorus of forest floor and tobacco. The palate has wonderful compression, herding vibrant cherries and chewy tannins into shape; there’s balance, focus and depth, all in one package." James Suckling

"The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino opens with a bouquet that is dark and captivating, reminding me of picking ripe strawberries right off the vine, as its pretty, dark red fruits mingle with earth tones and hints of floral stems, then spiced orange and sweet minerality slowly develope in the glass. On the palate, it floods the senses with textures like fine velvet, yet not heavy in any way, instead guided by brisk acids and minerals, carrying fleshy dark red fruits with hints of savory herbs and spice. As the textural experience comes to a close, it reveals a coating of round tannins, with sweet red fruits, spices and pretty floral tones lingering on and on. What a gorgeous expression of vintage character complemented by this house's classic style. Even in its youth, the 2015 Gianni Brunelli will have a lot of fans, but it should also do well over the next ten to fifteen years in the cellar." Vinous

"The Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto team is on a roll, and these last few vintages have really hit it out of the ballpark. Their latest release, the charming 2015 Brunello di Montalcino, is one of the stars of the vintage. This wine exudes the warmth and sheer exuberance of the growing season, which was beautifully warm and sunny. Yet it also stays true to the promise of Montalcino that strives for elegance, poise and longevity. This is a classic interpretation that offers a very precise and pure window onto the Sangiovese grape, with its tight aromas of wild cherry, medical herb and pressed blue flowers. The wine is a blend of fruit from both sides of Montalcino, the north side and the southeast. Between the two sites you get a mix of schist, sand, clay, tufo and Galestro soil. That's pretty much the whole rainbow from the appellation." Robert Parker

    • Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015

A Riserva is produced in the winery only in the best years, and the result is just over 3,000 bottles of the finest Sangiovese, which presents itself in the 2015 edition undisputedly in the first league of Montalcino. Medium light red, wonderfully balanced aromas and an almost seamless transition from nose to palate. Notes of wild berries, spices and forest floor come together like a team to create a rich, deep and highly balanced growth, which is already on the podium after the first sip. Texture, structure and tannins are not to be surpassed in harmony and leave an impression in the long reverberation, dan one does not forget again. 2015 was a very harmonious and rich year, this Brunello captures the character of the vintage impressively precisely. Chapeau! SUPERIORE.DE

"A full-bodied, structured red with smoke, tar and grilled mushrooms on the nose. Some bitter berries to go with the earthy mushrooms. Chewy tannins and a long, savory finish. Lots of citrus." James Suckling

"The Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is another beauty from this bijoux estate. This wine offers texture and depth, but it does not have the same level of luminosity or brightness that we got in the 2016 Brunello. It shows some charred aromas with spice and ripe fruit, with wide and large ambition. I got a touch of Graham cracker and brown sugar, followed by spice and ripe fruit. This is a long and generous wine, with soft fruit and texture on the long finish." Robert Parker

"The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino from Gianni Brunelli didn’t leave much room for improvement; yet somehow the Riserva manages to take things to a whole new level. The bouquet alone is absolutely stunning, as you could sit with this glass for an hour and never grow tired of taking in its mix of sweet wild herbs, dusty florals and bright cherry fruit. Sage, lavender, spiced orange and flowery undergrowth complete this already-dazzling expression. It’s deep and silky, verging on fleshy but not quite, as a tactile mix of acids, minerals and fine tannin settle in. That said, while the 2015 Riserva is classically structured and dry, it prioritizes purity of fruit above all else, seeming to hover upon the senses and never grow tiring. Fans of Gianni Brunelli will be very happy to have a few of these resting in the cellar. The Riserva is typically made from a higher percentage of fruit from the Olmo vineyard at Podernovone in the south balanced out by a parcel from Le Chiuse in the north, which adds freshness." Vinous

About the winemakersGianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di SottoTuscany | Montalcino
Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto

"People who really understand about quality know that it is mainly due to personal effort and empathy, not intensive mechanisation." Laura Brunelli

Gianni Brunelli opened an old osteria in the old town of Siena after years of working in a factory. It turned out that the daring career change was just the right thing to do: 41 years later, his famous Osteria Le Logge is still one of the most important cult places in Tuscan gastronomy and the unique ambience is one of Sting's and Gianna Nannini's favourite restaurants.

After this gastronomic success story, Gianni was drawn back to his home Montalcino. Determined, he bought the vineyard Le Chiuse di Sotto in 1987, because his late father had worked there as a farmer. In memory of his father Dino, a small piece of the vines planted by him in 1947 is still preserved. In the mid-1990s, the Podernovone estate, located in the southeast, was added, which was inaugurated in 2015 as the official headquarters of the winery.

They say that behind every great man there is also a strong woman. Gianni Brunelli was a great man who could always count on the support of his remarkable wife Laura, who was always by his side until his unexpected death in 2008. Today, Laura continues her husband's tradition and values at the Le Chiuse di Sotto winery.

Six and a half hectares of vines are cultivated organically and take over 400 hours of work per unit. Brunello di Montalcino has a world-class reputation, and the wines from the Brunelli house confirm its level every year. The other wines like Amor Costante, a Sangiovese-Merlot blend, or the single-varietal Merlot Toscano IGT and Brunelli's Rosso di Montalcino are in no way inferior to the competition.

The Brunellis' quiet flight of fancy is not least due to the precise work in the vineyard: "It is actually totally normal to produce balanced quality wines if you bring ripe and healthy grapes into the cellar. Quality primarily comes from the work in the vineyard", Laura, who is now supported by Gianni's brother Adriano, tells. The demanding quality philosophy of the founding couple is still reflected in all wines, thanks to which the memory of Gianni Brunelli will not be forgotten.

"There are many different ways to give meaning to one's life. Ours is to make wine so good that those who drink it are moved to goodwill and friendship," explains the Sardinian native. Each label is adorned by the artwork "Elvira with Hat" - a tribute to Gianni's mother Elvira, created for Gianni and Laura by painter and Harvard economist Richard M. Goodwin. The original still hangs at the entrance of the Osteria Le Logge in Siena. SUPERIORE.DE
