“Luce” Toscana IGT 2018
Luce is the wine icon of the eponymous estate and symbol of the harmonious balance between the elegant structure of Sangiovese and the fullness of Merlot. The wine marries the tradition and terroir of the Montalcino region and the personal interpretation of this extraordinary land.
Almost impenetrable ruby red. The bouquet is initially still reductive and relatively austere, which opens up softly and warmly with seductive scents of ripe berries, tobacco and leather with increasing aeration. The taste is concentrated, distinctive and tannic, yet silky and promising on the palate. The finish is long and deep with hints of coffee and vanilla. A great blend of Merlot and Sangiovese with high potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"Next to the Antinori, the Marchesi Frescobaldi is the most traditional wine dynasty of Florence. Their Luce is a blend of 80% Sangiovese with 20% Merlot, resulting in a dark, intense colour. The Luce spreads a super rich nose, reminiscent of old vintages of Fontodi's Vigna del Sorbo. This fat fruitiness can be safely described as sexy. Round, juicy and lavish, the Luce unloads on the tongue with excellent acidity, plenty of body and creamy texture. The spicy tannins enhance the drinking flow immensely, which is also not slowed down by the 15 vol.%." Weinwisser
"Accentuated aromas of blueberry, stone fruit and dark chocolate, also spices and sandalwood; in the mouth it presents its dense, tightly meshed tannin, but also has density and richness into the ell-long final on notes of black cherries and liquorice." Vinum
"Sparkling, rich ruby-violet. Very appealing and open nose with rich notes of crisp berry fruit, plums and cherry, plus some red currant, lots of tobacco in the background. Juicy in the attack, shows nicely elaborated fruit, grippy tannin in many layers, lots of pressure in the final." Falstaff
"An icon wine of the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Tenuta Luce 2018 Luce is recognized far and wide for its pretty sunshine motif on the front label. This mix of equal parts Sangiovese and Merlot is a symbolic marriage of Italy and France blended to safeguard the core identities of its two vinous protagonists. The Sangiovese adds wild rose, cherry and freshness; the Merlot brings on softness and texture. Each actor plays off the other in a flirtatious but ultimately complementary manner. This is a full-bodied Tuscan blend that will definitely give pleasure to that large crowd of Luce enthusiasts out there." Robert Parker
"Very focused and classy on the nose with blackberries, currants, mushrooms and dark bark. It’s full-bodied with a tight palate of chewy tannins that give structure and form to the wine. Beautiful center palate of dark fruit and mushrooms. Subtle and strong. Give this at least three or four years to resolve itself. Best after 2024." James Suckling

“Luce” Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015
Intense ruby red. Complex aromas of ripe black fruits and liquorice, rounded off with notes of tobacco and truffle. Soft and fresh on the palate, with an impressive texture. Velvety tannins and an opulent mouthful lead this wine from an excellent vintage to a long and elegant final. A delicious, modern interpretation of Brunello full of personality, brightness and sunshine! SUPERIORE.DE
"Shiny, rich ruby garnet. Shows notes of plum and blackberry in the nose, very appealing, in the background fresh leather. In the beginning and the course of the wine, it opens with full-bodied tannin, plum, in the final a little bit of high alcohol is noticeable." Falstaff
"Tasted blind. Quite deep ruby with narrow orange rim. Immediate and concentrated nose with enormous depth as well as richness. Has bags of everything, and quite a bit of new oak but it’s effortlessly matched by the rich fruit. Perfectly balanced with juicy integrated acidity, and elegant, clinging, long tannins. Very imposing and with potential." Jancis Robinson
"The 2015 vintage registered weather conditions characterised by a crisp and rainy spring that provided the grapevines with the right stimuli and to develop significant water reserves in the subsoil. The excellent temperature ranges in September contributed to the perfect phenolic ripening of the grapes in this warm yet balanced vintage who gave small and sparse clusters. The wine is full of solarity with clear raspberry if not darker wild fruits, with tobacco and roasted nuts aroma and flavors. Firm acidity and grainy, velvety tannins build the full body of the wine with its great suppleness, showing only a bit warming finish." Decanter
"This is one of the icon bottles within the greater portfolio of Frescobaldi wines from Tuscany. The Luce della Vite 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Luce moves over the palate with power and determination (with 15.5% alcohol), imparting ripe fruit flavors of blackberry and candied cherry along the way. This wine shows deep dimension and fiber with a solid core of dark fruit. It lightens up on the palate thanks to that bright acidity and the general quality of the primary fruit flavors obtained in this happy vintage. The tannins are neatly woven into the wine's full-bodied density." Robert Parker
"Big and rich, featuring plum, black cherry, leather and earth aromas and flavors. Ripe and fruity, with dense tannins buried in the flesh. A bit monolithic, yet also fresh and long. All the components are in the right proportions. Best from 2023 through 2040." Wine Spectator
"Amazing aromas of crushed berries, cherries, flowers, black truffles and wet earth, turning to violets and black tea. Extremely aromatic. Full-bodied, deep and profound with fantastically strong tannins that just melt into the wine. Fantastic length and intensity. Truly great. Drinkable, but better in 2024 and onwards." James Suckling

“Luce” Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016
Intense ruby red. Complex aromas of ripe black fruits and liquorice, rounded off with notes of tobacco and truffles. Soft and fresh on the palate, with an impressive texture. Velvety tannins and opulent mouth-filling lead this wine from an excellent vintage into a long and elegant final. A delicious, modern interpretation of Brunello, full of personality, brightness and sunshine! SUPERIORE.DE
"From vineyards at an altitude of 400 metres above sea level: On the nose, aromas of wild berries, lilac and pepper are pleasing; balanced texture with polish, racy tannin and noticeable acidity, vinified with precision, nuanced yet powerful final." Vinum
"Deep, smoky, earthy aroma, ripe cherries, blueberries, clear tobacco and spicy notes, chocolate, a touch of graphite. In the mouth immensely powerful and dense, everything seems to be in a higher gear, the supple fullness is supported by an acidity that seems to be chiselled as well as by fine-meshed tannins, powerful final. As in the previous year, of excellent quality, some find it too "modern", but you can't talk this wine down. Weinwisser
"Powerful ruby with fine garnet rim. Very compact nose with inviting notes of ripe, dark cherries, blackberries, fine spice in the background. Juicy and round in attack and course, shows a lot of present fruit, fine-meshed tannin in many layers, firm pressure in the final, compact." Falstaff
"Deep, lustrous ruby. Taut nose with rich cherry fruit underneath and a complex oak note. Full, yet sleek on the palate with lots of grainy tannins kept beautifully in check by the generous succulent cherry fruit. Ends full, concentrated and a little vibrant. The enormous alcohol of this wine simply goes unnoticed, until you look at the label." Jancis Robinson
"From the Frescobaldi family of Florence, the Luce della Vite (or Tenuta Luce) 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Luce is a wine of depth and intensity. This 2016 vintage goes further and offers more substance than most of the recent vintages we've seen. It reveals a dark color and appearance with cocktail cherry, balsam spice and a touch of white chocolate. The tannins are dry, but the wine compensates with a good dose of that concentrated fruit richness that defines this classic vintage." Robert Parker
"Lighter in colour than the Luce, higher acidity even on the aromatics, gorgeously sculpted and nuanced, with kick and backbone. A savoury edge to the fruit, and strong spices, we are here at almost five years since harvest and you feel the softened tannins with tobacco and olive paste alongside still bright cherry fruits. This is sliding towards being ready to drink, although a few more years will really open things up." Decanter
"Pure black cherry, blackberry and black currant flavors abound in this rich red, supported by graphite, earth, wild rosemary and anise notes. Balanced and almost approachable now, yet the refined tannins and bright acidity should allow this to develop for decades." Wine Spectator
"Ripe, decadent aromas of blackberries, black truffles and black cherries with hints of violets. Dark, wet earth, too. Full-bodied with a solid core of beautiful, pure fruit and creamy, round and fine tannins. Tight and reserved, but showing wonderful potential." James Suckling

Lamberto Frescobaldi has been given the task of successfully leading the Luce della Vite winery, located right next to Castelgiocondo, into the future with oenological skill. This was the dream of two protagonists of international viticultural history, Vittorio Frescobaldi from Florence and Robert Mondavi from Napa Valley/California, in 1995. Lamberto's main tasks are to renew vineyards, modernize wineries and set up research programs for selected vineyards. Luce della Vite is part of the Tenute di Toscana holding company managed by Marchesi de' Frescobaldi. Robert Mondavi's son Michael has only a financial stake in the estate.
The Tenuta Luce is one of the highest situated wineries in Montalcino with 350 to 420 meters of altitude. It comprises 192 hectares of land, 77 of which are covered with vines. While part of it was planted in 1977, the majority of the vineyards have been newly planted or replanted since 1997, with an average density of 6,100 vines per hectare. According to Frescobaldi, the Galestro soil, which is well drained and poor in organic matter, offers ideal conditions for growing Sangiovese at higher altitudes. At lower altitudes, the soil is more clayey and therefore particularly suitable for growing Merlot.
In order to maintain healthy vines, organic technologies are mainly used in the vineyards. The average yield of Tenuta Luce is kept very low, at around 30 hectolitres of wine per hectare, to strengthen the character of the grape varieties and allow the terroir to develop to its full potential. The varieties are harvested separately and are only brought together towards the end of November when fermentation is complete. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Luce, despite its Mondavi past, is not a noisy wine but a fine wine in which one feels the hills of southern Tuscany." Vinum
