      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013

Rich dark colour, pronounced aromas of ripe forest raspberries and cherries, fine violet note. On the palate juicy fruit, well matured, fine-grained, dense tannins, extremely long aftertaste with wonderful fruit sweetness. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, powerful ruby garnet. Opened with a clear and catchy nose, full of blackberries and plums, followed by cardamom. On the palate smooth and round, shows a lot of sweet fruit, after ripe cherries and raspberries, opens with smooth, dense tannin, in the finale long reverberation." Falstaff

"Full ruby-red. Aromas of red cherry, blackberry, licorice and minerals. Juicy and tightly wound but pliant, offering smooth black and red fruit flavors complicated by licorice and fresh herbs. Classically dry and long, finishing with supple but firm tannins and a bright floral element. It’s hard to argue with this entry-level Brunello’s quality. I find it to be slightly underrated in many vintages, as all the attention is focused on Gaja’s two top Brunellos, the Rennina and the Sugarille. But this non-cru Brunello offers lots of high-quality wine for the price." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2014

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2014

Angelo Gaja decided not to vinify his famous Brunello-Crus "Sugarille" and "Rennina" separately in 2014. This is why the grapes, which were otherwise uncompromisingly reserved for these showpiece wines, found their way into his base Brunello, which benefited greatly from them.

Rich dark colour, pronounced aromas of ripe forest raspberries and cherries, fine violet note. On the palate juicy fruit, well matured, fine-grained, dense tannins, extremely long aftertaste with wonderful fruit sweetness. SUPERIORE.DE

"Firm, slightly undergrowthy and earthy scent of ripe black and red berries with slightly bitter chocolate wood spice, animal traces and a little bit of tar. A fairly firm, ripe, juicy fruit with juvenile wood spice, some cocoa, coffee and peppery-spicy tones, dense and persistent, good depth, in the background salty minerality, dried herbs and ethereal notes, some blood and iron in the background, much grip, still undeveloped, very good to long, complex, juicy, spicy and still a little roasted finish. Must mature." Marcus Hofschuster

    • Brunello di Montalcino "Rennina" DOCG 2011

Brunello di Montalcino “Rennina” DOCG 2011

A modernist, as he says in the book. Balanced and impressive at the same time. Powerful scents and flavours of violets, black cherries, tobacco and menthol. The tannins are firm and yet beautifully integrated. Rennina is a complex, medium-weight wine, which has a great positive influence on its ageing potential and constitutes its success story. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina is made from a blend of fruit from three different vineyard parcels. The sites total 25 hectares, with 15 located next to the church, or the Pieve, after which this estate is named. The sites have southwest exposures and different soil types. That flexibility explains the smooth and seamless bouquet offered by this wine. Compared to the single vineyard Sugarille expression, Rennina is more open and immediate. The wine presents fleshy and beautifully plump aromas of red cherry, dried blackberry and exotic spice with tobacco and chocolate at the back."Robert Parker

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina is strikingly beautiful. Rich, open-knit and alluring, the Rennina captures all the best qualities of the year. Sweet red cherry, plum, tobacco and spice notes are all supported by ripe, silky tannins that give the wine much of its sensual personality. The intensity of the year is very much in evidence, yet the Rennina also retains striking freshness. Historically, the Rennina has aged quite well, but it will be hard to resist, as it is already quite delicious."Antonio Galloni

"The new oak is more than obvious, if sleekly integrated with the fruit. Nebbiolo-like structure. Firm tannins and complex, orange peel and cherry fruit. Easily one of the best wines from this hot vintage."Jancis Robinson

The tannins are firm and yet beautifully integrated. Rennina is a complex, medium-weight wine, which has a great positive influence on its ageing potential and constitutes its success story. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina is a dark, plush and succulent red wine with seamless overall integration. Angelo Gaja makes his wines with broad brush strokes that form shapes of perfect harmony and grandeur. He seems less interested in the minutiae, much in the same way an impressionist painter creates a portrait without consideration for the gritty details of reality. Continuing with my art metaphor, I'll venture to say that this is a big-picture wine that embraces bold fruit, oak spice, acidity and tannin in one overwhelming and warm embrace. I usually score the Sugarille a point or two higher, but this year the Rennina won my heart." Robert Parker

"Aromas of orange peel, dark fruit and bark. Dried mushroom, too. Full body and extremely polished and velvety tannins that are plush but compacted. Delicious finish." James Suckling

"Deep ruby. Lots of oak and lively, concentrated cherry on the nose. Oak has quite a big impact but there is such a lot of fruit that it integrates. The finish has amazing length and muscular grip, but it could do with much less oak, because it plays up on the finish." Jancis Robinson

"This perfumed Brunello offers enticing scents of pressed violet, rose, talcum powder, wild berry, eucalyptus and a whiff of exotic spice. On the structured palate, firm fine-grained tannins provide support for dried black cherry, licorice, vanilla and a hint of espresso." Wine Enthusiast

"This is fragrant, offering cherry, leather, floral and spice notes. On the palate, this remains fresh, with persistent flavors and fine harmony. Dusty tannins pull everything together on the finish. There's plenty of energy here." Wine Spectator

    • Brunello di Montalcino "Sugarille" DOCG 2013

Brunello di Montalcino “Sugarille” DOCG 2013

Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille is exceptionally colourful, concentrated and deep. Black cherries, tar, liquorice, smoke and frankincense emanate from its bouquet, on the palate the serious personality typical of Gajas Brunello with interwoven tannins and lively acidity. Big and long with enormous potential. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich ruby with a slight garnet shimmer. Penetrating nose with rich notes of dark rose petals and blackberries. It has a rich, dense tannin on the palate, is built up in many layers, salty and with a long finish." Falstaff

"The single-vineyard 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille has a tighter core and a blacker heart compared to the Rennina. This wine is momentarily more difficult to penetrate and comprehend. It makes a more abrupt first impression but then relaxes and reveals more of its character only after it has spent extra time in your company. Then, it becomes suddenly exuberant and loud. This is a dynamic expression of Sangiovese with bold ripe fruit, spice and balsam notes to carry it forward during cellar aging. This vintage offers firmness and strength." Robert Parker

"A very aromatic red. Typical sangiovese aromas of cherry and rose petal with hints of bark. Full body, firm and silky tannins. A racy linear line runs through it. Tight and firm now." James Suckling

"A shade more mature ruby than the Rennina. Much more restrained and less opulent. Blackberry, cherry and minerally notes. Fresher and more precise, too, and with better integrated oak. Energetic acidity with plush fruit on the finish and bags of appetising, chewy tannins." Jancis Robinson

"Underbrush, new leather, wild herb and dark-skin berry aromas meld with balsamic whiffs of eucalyptus. The full-bodied firmly structured palate evokes raspberry compote, black cherry marinated in spirits, tobacco and star anise set against a backbone of close-grained tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"Deep red-ruby. Delicate aromas of flinty red cherry and herbs complicated by hints of mocha and lifted by a bright violet topnote. Dense, rich and concentrated but light on its feet, offering a very polished mouthfeel thanks to serious but noble tannins that nicely frame the refined, steely red fruit flavors. Finishes long and very elegant. Just like the 2013 Brunello Rennina, this also has 15% alcohol but is so well balanced that you can hardly tell. Knockout young Brunello from Gaja, one of the very best in memory." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

"A mix of sweet plum, cherry, bouillon and graphite aromas and flavors, all backed by a solid structure, this is dense and tightly wound, with terrific balance and a long, focused finish." Wine Spectator

Pieve S. Restituta | Angelo Gaja

Since 1972, Roberto Bellini, a Lombard building contractor, has developed the Pieve Santa Restituta estate into a winegrowing estate with great potential. But after Angelo Gaja had bought himself into the winery as a partner in the spring of 1994, the vine grower, one of the most internationally renowned representatives of the Italian wine industry, is now the sole owner of the property located in the southwest of Montalcino. The historical property takes its name from the 17th century parish church of the same name, which stands on the premises and is an excellent example of medieval Christian architecture and art. It is thanks to the Gaja family that this beautiful church has been restored. The history of "beeper" is still taken into account today on the labels of the estate wines.

In order to put the winery in order, the new owner of the estate made considerable funds available. Gaja, for example, had the vineyards replanted at a higher density of vines and brought the cellar, which was largely underground, up to date. The Pieve Santa Restituta range is small but fine and fairly priced. On a vineyard area of 16 hectares at an altitude of about 300 meters above sea level, the "sugarille" from a vineyard of the same name and from three vineyards. "Rennina" only two Brunelli produced from the best grapes each.

The soils, consisting of a mixture of limestone and clay, were abandoned long ago by farmers (partial tenants). But while other plants had no livelihood in the rugged and nutrient-poor terrain, the land turned out to be ideal for growing Sangiovese grapes.

The approximately 4,000 square metre winery was integrated into the existing cellar in order to minimise any harmful effects on the environment. Pieve Santa Restituta's preferred winemaking style is considered classic. Angelo Gaja - supported by his daughter Gaia in the estate - takes special care of the tannin development, but also of maintaining acidity and elegance. SUPERIORE.DE
