“Cretum” Rosato di Toscana IGT 2019

This fresh Rosato takes its name from the "Crete Senesi", a landscape created by erosion and situated not far from the winery. Pale pink in colour with a scent of red grapefruit with red berries and spices on the palate and a slight saltiness on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE

    • "Poggio Bonelli" Chianti Classico DOCG 2019

“Poggio Bonelli” Chianti Classico DOCG 2019

Dark ruby red. Opens with aromas of dark cherry, plum, spices and Spanish cedar. Very seductive also in the taste the delicate blackberry note, which again mixes with tobacco, minerals and well-integrated wood. The final is fresh with a precise acidity and again an intensely spicy length. Every year, the Chianti Classico from Poggio Bonelli is very attractive, stylish and on the pulse of time. SUPERIORE.DE

"A good dose of fresh oak is the first impression on the nose, but there's some good black fruit, too. The same combination on the medium plate, but better integrated, with lightly firm, fruit and oak-stained tannins and a tasty, medium finish." James Suckling

    • Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2017

      Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2017

Sensual bouquet of aromas of ripe raspberries and sour cherries, plus earthy and spicy nuances, coffee, chocolate and tobacco. Plump and full-bodied on the palate, excellently structured with silky tannins and a long final. Excellent price-quality ratio in a small edition. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright ruby red. The nose is leathery and spicy with ripe wild berries and rich Amarena cherries. Shows juicy on the palate, with a nice fan and slightly salty tannins, filigree pressure in the finish." Falstaff

"A chunky red, muscular and solid, sporting plum, earth, leather and iron flavours. It's lively, and though well-endowed with beefy tannins, manages to remain balanced and long." Wine Spectator

"Spending at least 21 months in French barrique and three months aging in the bottle, this pure expression of carefully selected Sangiovese sports a soft and contemporary style that is very much a reflection of the warm and sunny 2017 vintage. The Poggio Bonelli 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva is nicely saturated, with medium richness and darkness. The bouquet reveals blackberry, plum, cherry, spice, tobacco and dark earth. The finish is supple and sweet with a touch of black olive. This Riserva will hold steady until the ten-year mark for sure." Robert Parker

    • "Poggiassai" Rosso Toscana IGT 2015

      “Poggiassai” Rosso Toscana IGT 2015

In the bouquet noble, typically Tuscan notes of cherries, blackberries, violets and spices. Exceptionally complex, multilayered and excellently structured on the palate. Gripping tannins, intense fruit and pleasant acidity are already in perfect harmony. The drinking pleasure builds nicely and increases in the long final. For us, it has been the attractive alternative to Antinori's famous Tignanello for years. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark garnet. Spicy nose, animal, chalky, tar and resin, dark fruit. Pithy and compact on the medium-bodied palate, great juiciness, spicy, with persistence." Falstaff

"The 2015 Poggiassai is a dark and generous blend with lots of rich fruit and energy on the bouquet. The mouthfeel is a bit more moderate than the Chianti Classico Riserva, but all that delicious power of the bouquet gives you a lot to contemplate. This would be a good one to serve with aged and aromatic cheeses." Robert Parker

"I love the intensity to this with dark cherries, nutmeg, licorice, vanilla and walnuts. Full-bodied and decadent, yet the acidity steers the ripe fruit through to a mineral, tangy finish that’s long and chewy. Best ever from here." James Suckling

    • "Tramonto d'Oca" Toscana IGT 2015

      “Tramonto d’Oca” Toscana IGT 2015

Tramonto d'Oca is a single-varietal red from the French (and not entirely simple) Petit Verdot variety. On the nose, in addition to the traditional wood note from the barrel, there are diverse aromas of spices, violets, blackberries and blackcurrants. On the palate, notes of pickled fruit, coffee and chocolate. Firmly structured and long, needs time and air. SUPERIORE.DE

"This is just starting to come around now. Full-bodied and flavorful, offering blackberry, blueberry and dark-chocolate aromas and flavors. Sold density of tannins, but approachable now. A beauty, but still better after 2021." James Suckling

"A pure expression of Petit Verdot, the Poggio Bonelli 2015 Tramonto d'Oca is a luscious and concentrated wine that shows good density and volume with black cherry, plum, dried blackberry, spice, tar and cured leather. The wine's density makes a solid and lasting impact on the palate and would surely pair well with a barbecue grilled steak." Robert Parker

About the winemakersPoggio BonelliTuscany | Chianti
    Poggio Bonelli

As early as the 16th century, the Poggio Bonelli winery in the extreme south of Chianti Classico began to cultivate wine. Over the centuries, the estate has been owned by various noble families from Siena. At first it was inhabited by the Spennali family. In the second half of the 16th century the estate belonged to the prominent Piccolomini family. Later, the estate passed to the Landucci family. She managed the estate first alone, later with the help of the Croci family until well into the 20th century. The Poggio Bonelli estate started production in 1950. 35 years later, the 810-hectare estate was sold to MPS Tenimenti, the agricultural subsidiary of Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the oldest bank in the world.

Today the Poggio Bonelli winery produces not only fine wines of very high quality from the fruits of 8,000 olive trees, but also extra virgin olive oil. On top of that, it runs an agriturismo business. The vineyards cover an area of 83 hectares near Castelnuovo Berardenga. There the wines find their special fullness and strength. The southern and south-western areas are planted with Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The berries are strictly selected after harvesting. The soils, which date back to the Pliocene period, are rich in clay, tuff and sand.

A few years ago the restructuring of the vineyard and the winery was completed. New vineyards were planted and old wooden barrels were completely replaced. Production was streamlined to just a few labels. Poggio Bonelli's wines are vinified today in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and later matured mainly in small French oak barrels before being refined in the bottle.

Poggiassai, a cuvée of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, is one of the house's top products. Star oenologist Carlo Ferrini has been on board since 1999. Together with Leonardo Pini, he closely watches over the production. SUPERIORE.DE

"Through a strict vineyard management following modern criteria, the labels of Poggio Bonelli gain an international profile, characterized by great concentration."Gambero Rosso
