“Volpolo di Sapaio” Rosso Bolgheri DOC 2023 (BIO)
On the Costa degli Etruschi, where the Maestrale blows in from the Tyrrhenian Sea and the waves crash just ten kilometres away, Massimo Piccin has been realising his dream of the perfect Bordeaux blend since 1999. Under his visionary hand and the advice of the renowned OenologistCarlo Ferrini, the modest farm in Castagneto Carducci has grown into a 40-hectare vineyard that is now one of Bolgheri's most respected addresses. Volpolo embodies the pure essence of this exceptional location between the municipalities of Castagneto Carducci and Bibbona; the name is a tribute to the ancient Tuscan grape variety Volpola and at the same time an expression of the deep roots in the Bolgheri terroir. This organically certified cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot thrives on the estate's 27 different soil types – a mosaic of sand, clay, limestone and sea pebbles, which owes its mineral richness to the former marshlands. The proximity to the sea provides the vines with the constant ventilation and intense light that allow Bordeaux varieties to mature to unimagined complexity.

“Sapaio” Rosso Toscana IGT 2020 (BIO)
Massimo Piccin is living the dream of giving new expression to Bordeaux growths from Bolgheri and producing wines that combine power, elegance and longevity. And so the Sapaio offers its full, vital and tannin-rich style magnificently and allows plenty of time for the finish. Once again, some of the grapes come from Bibbona, i.e. outside the Bolgheri DOC, so that this great wine can only bear the addition Toscana IGT.

“Sapaio” Rosso Toscana IGT 2021 (BIO)
The name is history. Sapaio – an old Tuscan grape variety, long forgotten, but not its memory. When Massimo Piccin founded his winery in 1999, he chose this name as a sign of his deep connection to the terroir. A tribute to what was and a promise of what was to come. The vineyards extend over the municipalities of Bibbona and Castagneto Carducci, 40 hectares on quaternary deposits, from loose, coarse-grained sand deposits to alluvial soils with calcareous subsoil. Just ten kilometres from the sea, a microclimate that brings Bordeaux varieties to life. Since 2015, Piccin has been going his own way: instead of the prestigious Bolgheri Superiore DOCG, he deliberately chooses the free IGT Toscana, just to be able to add the handful of grapes from Bibbona that make Sapaio what it is today. Sometimes greatness means renouncing titles and regulations.

In the early hours of the morning, when the Maestrale is still gently caressing the hills between Bolgheri and Bibbona and the first light kisses the red earth, the true essence of what Massimo Piccin has been moulding as his life's work for over two decades is revealed. Sapaio – named after the ancient Tuscan grape variety Sapaia – is more than just a wine. It is the manifesto of a visionary who came here in 1999 as a Venetian engineer and created a kingdom of the senses from eight hectares of bare earth. The name bears a crown as a logo, a tribute to the nobility of wine and the daily devotion of those who leave their souls between the vines and barrels. Since 2015, Sapaio has deliberately been labelled Toscana IGT, not out of embarrassment but out of conviction: Because the best grapes grow beyond the administrative borders of Bolgheri, in Bibbona, where ferruginous red clay soils provide a minerality that no decree in the world can regulate.

Podere Sapaio occupies a prominent position among the approximately 50 wineries in the Bolgheri region. The young, 40 hectare, picturesquely situated winery, founded by Massimo Piccin just before the turn of the millennium, stretches over the municipalities of Bibbona and Castagneto Carducci. Together with his qualified staff and under the oenological advice of Carlo Ferrini, the owner quickly succeeded in becoming a stylistic model for the wines of this region thanks to his interpretive skills. The winery caused a worldwide sensation when it was able to outdo well-known winegrowers such as Ornellaia at a blind tasting with its inexpensive second wine Volpolo.
The Podere Sapaio vineyard portfolio includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, three typical varieties from the Bordelais, which have contributed significantly to the reputation of Bolgheri wines. It also contains other types of grapes in small quantities. The fruit is harvested as gently as possible in the plots and then processed very conscientiously in the cellar. The cultivated areas are on quaternary deposits and range from soils of loose coarse-grained sand deposits to alluvial soils with calcareous subsoils that allow the water to drain off well. In addition to the vineyards, there are several hectares of olive groves where Frantoio, Moraiolo and Leccino trees grow.
The assortment of the house contains only two wines produced in a modern style. The drops are elegant, long-lasting and expressive and have gained in depth and character over the years. They skilfully combine the finesse of Bordeaux with the typical West Tuscan terroir. Piccin gave his two cuvées the names Sapaio and Volpolo. The flagship of the area, the Sapaio, is very often accompanied by the wine guideGambero Rosso. "Three glasses" crowned. The landowner chose both names, by the way, in accordance with the old Tuscan grape varieties Sapaia and Volpola, in order to emphasize the domestic origin of his products. The wines of the small bottle battery show much ripe fruit and are matured at least 14 months in barriques. The crown that characterises the overall appearance of Podere Sapaio is a tribute to the nobility of the wine and the high quality of the area. The symbol is also a tribute to the meticulous work carried out in the vineyards and winery. SUPERIORE.DE
"Like many others who invested in viticulture, Massino Piccin has changed his life fundamentally and dedicates himself full-time to his Podere Sapaio. It all began in 1999, in a beautiful forty-hectare estate, 25 of which were planted with typical local varieties. The soils of the vineyards are sandy and calcareous, stylistically they follow the modern path, punctual and precise in their extract and in an ever more harmonious relationship with the wood used for ageing."Gambero Rosso 2015
