“Terra” Barbera 2019
Lively bright ruby red. Initially slightly reductive on the nose, Terra soon reveals its great spicy profile of small red forest fruits, medicinal herbs and nutty notes. On the palate with medium pressure, a very pleasant dynamic and great drinking flow. The lively and refreshing acidity, together with its likeable red fruitiness, make it an excellent food companion. An exceptional Barbera that will still be fun to drink many years from now. SUPERIORE.DE

“La Luna e i Falò" Barbera d’Asti Superiore DOCG 2019
Dreamlike Barbera, dedicated to the last work (La Luna e i Falo = Young Moon) of the writer Cesare Pavese. This wine symbolises the connection to the earth and to one's own origins. Dark purple. On the nose complex aromas of dark red, plump, juicy cherries, finest spices, plums and black forest berries. In the mouth polished, dense and with lots of fruit. Present but silky tannins, finely enclosed by the fruit, finesse-rich and persistent with a first-class acid structure. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby red with violet. In the nose with a clear use of wood, light malt, milk chocolate, then violets and wild berries. On the palate supple and with a rich melting, comes in many layers, then in the finish unfortunately a bit consuming due to the wood use." Falstaff
"Rather complex nose here with a black-fruit core that’s colored by a variety of aromas, from hazelnuts to clay-like minerals, violets and perfumed bark. The same complexity on the almost full-bodied palate with luscious, sweet-fruit flavors and a controlled finish with very fine, lightly firm tannins. Long, savory aftertaste. Nicely done. This is serious barbera that will age nicely for some years. Gets better and better every vintage." James Suckling

Barbera d’Alba Superiore DOC 2019
Fontanabianca has created an elegant and densely packed Barbera. It shows the exuberance and potential of the grape, yet with appropriate restraint. It is neither jammy nor too fruity, but indulges with a fine dose of dried cherry and plum aromas, plus some Spanish cedar with a fine citrus note. A well-balanced drop with a beautiful final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Revealing dark cherry and dried blackberry, the Fontanabianca 2019 Barbera d'Alba Superiore is a mid-weight expression that delivers the black fruit intensity this grape is known for, but it also shows a good level of mouth-freshening acidity. This wine would pair nicely with a flatbread or pinsa topped with pulled pork and smoked cheese. You get good value here." Robert Parker

“Curej” Barbera d’Asti DOC 2020
"We want this land to say: Barbera. We have always thought that, ever since the first vineyards that grandfather Giuseppe left to his father Giacomo, where grapes were grown for La Monella. Then those between Rocchetta and Belveglio (the Bricco dell'Uccellone sites), which mother Anna brought as a dowry, and the Montebruna vineyards, which we bought and merged - and still look at with great pride." Familie Bologna
With the same respect for the landscape and the grape variety, the first vintage of Curej was harvested in 2019, and the name says it all: it is the nickname of the families who have always lived in the village of Rocchetta Tanaro, with 1,400 inhabitants. So this wine is a very impressive reminder of its roots, the typical taste of the Barbera grape and the open, wide and happy panaroma enjoyed from the San Bernardo winery.
Curej is an extremely fresh, straightforward and precise Barbera, full of primary aromas, which reflects the signature of the Braida winery, famous for the grape, in the most impressive way, because hardly anyone can interpret the DNA of this classic Piemontese grape variety better than Rafaella and Giuseppe Bologna! “Sentieri” Barbera Marca Obertenga 2019
The Barbera vines for Sentieri, which are over 30 years old, stand at an altitude of around 300m on predominantly calcareous soils in the natural amphitheatre of Monleale. It shows the big opposite of an opulent, dense style. Sentieri has a beautiful Italian freshness and is 100% focused on the primary fruit of the Barbera grape. It presents plenty of breed and a personality that is distinguishedly restrained and very well balanced. For us, this is Barbera at its purest and here Walter Massa impressively proves that he is not only capable of top performance with the white Timorasso. And once again we are more than taken with the excellent value his wines. SUPERIORE.DE

“Quass” Barbera d’Alba DOC 2019
The Barbera d'Alba Quass is of enormous concentration and depth. On the nose dark berries, flowers, cloves and leather, on the palate a lot of spicy cherry fruit, articulated and structured, with a soft core of blackberry and exuberant acidity. Very attractive! SUPERIORE.DE

The importance of the red Barbera grape in Piedmont and large parts of Lombardy can only be compared with the position of Sangiovese in central Italy. The Barbera is a robust vine. It is relatively hardy, insensitive to spring frosts and not particularly susceptible to disease. On top of that, it reliably generates economic returns. Because of the high growth strength, leaves and shoot tips have to be cut back several times in summer. The grapes do not ripen as late as those of Nebbiolo, but later than those of Dolcetto.
Barbera wine is characterised by its intense ruby red colour and aromas often compared to wild cherries, violets or vanilla. Barbera produces wines with a low tannin content. However, the plants do not appear boring or flat because they are carried by a very strong acidity. The Barbera can retain this acidity during the ripening of the grapes, even at very high ripeness levels or during a rapid ripening process in hot climates. In combination with their fruitiness, successful Barbera wines therefore appear extremely full-bodied and rich. Among the most famous Barbera wines are the Barbera d'Alba, the Barbera d'Asti and the Barbera del Monferrato. In general, the Barbera d'Alba as the best. But the other two are hardly inferior, especially as the large DOC areas overlap at the edges and producers in these areas can choose how to label their wine. It is generally agreed that the vineyards located in the immediate vicinity of Alba and some scattered villages in the vicinity of Asti produce the best Barbera wines. SUPERIORE.DE
