“Rosso Fuoco” Barbera d’Asti DOCG 2024 (BIO)
Sparkling like a sunny day on the plain, this Barbera immediately radiates joie de vivre without drawing attention to itself loudly – the name Rosso Fuoco, meaning red wine of fire, carries its poetic part with dignity. The grapes are organically grown on gently undulating limestone-clay soil in Astigiano. Gentle manual harvesting, stainless steel processing and spontaneous ageing give the wine clarity and vitality, while the plump fruitiness remains uncomplicated.

!["La Luna e i Falò" Barbera d'Asti Superiore DOCG 2022]()
“La Luna e i Falò" Barbera d’Asti Superiore DOCG 2022
The vines are planted where the Piedmont slopes gently at Canelli and the Barbera grape can develop its depth. The name is reminiscent of Cesare Pavese, the great son of these hills – and his most famous work "La Luna e i Falò". Like the novel, this wine also carries a quiet melancholy, paired with expression, maturity and identity. Matured in barriques and large casks for around a year, this is a Barbera full of character and at the same time modern.

Lively bright ruby red. Initially slightly reductive on the nose, Terra soon reveals its great spicy profile of small red forest fruits, medicinal herbs and nutty notes. On the palate with medium pressure, a very pleasant dynamic and great drinking flow. The lively and refreshing acidity, together with its likeable red fruitiness, make it an excellent food companion. !["La Villa" Barbera d'Asti DOCG 2024 (BIO)]()
“La Villa” Barbera d’Asti DOCG 2024 (BIO)
Barbera with origin and attitude: La Villa has been Olim Bauda's favourite wine for decades – not because it is particularly loud, but because it seems so natural. No barrique, no spectacle, but plenty of character. The secret lies in the balance: fruit and freshness, elegance and energy – everything is there, nothing imposes itself. Bright ruby in the glass with a youthful violet colour. The bouquet plays on the fresh side: sour cherry, raspberry, dried herbs, a hint of violet and a delicate mineral note. On the palate, the typical tension of Asti-Barbera – juicy, clearly contoured, with supple tannins and fine length. A wonderfully authentic wine that breathes the soul of Piedmont – spontaneous, lively, unaffected. If you want to understand the essence of this grape variety, this is the perfect wine for every day. Barbera d’Alba Superiore DOC 2023
In Neive, where the hills of Barbaresco gently undulate towards the horizon, the Pola family has been running the Fontanabianca winery since 1969. What Franco Pola started back then with the first bottle of Barbaresco Bordini is continued today by his son Aldo and grandson Matteo with the same conviction: quality is only created where the wine authentically reflects the terroir. On the limestone and clay soils of the municipality of Neive, 250 metres above sea level, the autochthonous grape varieties of Piedmont thrive in a temperate climate: Nebbiolo for the great Barbaresco wines, Dolcetto for uncomplicated pleasure and Barbera for the powerful elegance that has made this variety the region's most sophisticated popular grape.

A Barbera with structure, clearly defined terroir and down-to-earth elegance: Croere grows on calcareous, white soil (marl-clay mixture), typical subsoil for finely mineralised, expressive wines with depth. The grapes come from vineyards with very low yields and are fermented traditionally with 15 days of maceration at 28–30 °C; after spontaneous malolactic fermentation, the wine matures in barriques – compact, but with finesse.

Barbera Langhe DOC 2024
Between La Morra and Verduno, the vineyards of Rivalta tell another facet of the Ascheri story. Here, at an altitude of 350 metres, Matteo Ascheri has been cultivating the indigenous grape varieties that characterise the true face of Piedmont for generations. Barbera epitomises Matteo's unmistakable signature: purity without frills, tradition without stubbornness. Vinification follows Ascheri's tried and tested philosophy: six months of ageing in a balanced mixture of used and new oak barrels, which gives the wine structure without masking its lively fruitiness. The result is a Barbera of remarkable harmony, reflecting both the elegance of the Langhe vineyards and the characteristic bite of this great Piedmontese grape variety.

The grapes for the savoury Fiulòt come from selected hillside parcels of Astigiano. Harvested and processed parcel by parcel, the must ferments at a controlled temperature in stainless steel; ageing on the fine lees in tanks preserves freshness, precision and varietal purity – in the spirit of an animating Barbera style. Bright ruby red in colour with a violet hue. Clear, ripe cherry and plum fruit, redcurrant, violets and a fine hint of liquorice on the nose. Juicy and straightforward on the palate: lively, well-integrated acidity, soft, fine-grained tannins and a smooth texture with a good drinking flow. The stainless steel ageing keeps the fruit crystal clear and the finish fresh. The Barbera vines for Sentieri are over 30 years old and grow at an altitude of around 300 metres on predominantly calcareous soils in the natural amphitheatre of Monleale. It presents plenty of race and a personality that is elegantly restrained and very balanced. For us, this is Barbera in its purest form and here Walter Massa impressively proves that he is not only capable of top performance with the white Timorasso. A wonderful and completely "unplanned" wine: Paolo actually wanted to plant more Moscato vines in this small 1.5-hectare, sustainably cultivated vineyard when he recognised the quality of the Barbera grapes ripening there in 2016. Without further ado, he decided to vinify a Barbera, which he then aptly named "Per Sbaglio" - which means "by mistake". We congratulate him on this decision, as just 3,000 bottles are released onto the market every year. Rich, sparkling ruby red colour. Classic ripe raspberry notes on the nose, red berries on the palate, very rounded, full-bodied and with great drinkability. SUPERIORE.DE

“Trevìe” Barbera d’Asti DOC 2022
Trevìe is like a trusted friend in Vietti's Barbera family – open-hearted, charming and honest – and completely without attitude. The grapes come from hilly vineyards around Asti and Alba. Hand-picked, gently pressed and spontaneously fermented in stainless steel – the wine then matures on the fine lees, with only a subtle use of wood to add depth without masking the freshness and fruit. The colour in the glass is a bright ruby red, almost youthfully radiant. The nose is light and clear: cherry juice, redcurrant, a hint of plum, flavoured with violet blossom and a discreet touch of almond on the edge. Trevìe remains elegant and juicy on the palate – with pure fruit, present but gentle acidity and a delicate, polished tannin that works in the background and holds the wine together. A slight minerality on the finish rounds off the whole with style. A Barbera that brings joie de vivre and character to the glass in equal measure – perfect for a sip between meals, but no less so at a fine table. SUPERIORE.DE

Delicately shining ruby red colour that immediately arouses curiosity. Ripe sour cherry, plum and subtle spicy notes unfold on the nose – fresh, spicy and intense without dominance. On the palate, Montebruna is powerful and juicy at the same time. The beautiful fruit is supported by fine acidity, which gives the wine poise and freshness. Barbera d’Alba DOC 2023
Here comes a wonderful Barbera from selected parcels in the Barolo and Barbaresco communes. After the cool, parcel-by-parcel harvest, the musts are fermented in stainless steel; the Barbera then matures classically in French oak – mainly in large barrels, with a smaller proportion in barriques – to refine the texture and keep the varietal fruit clear. Bright ruby red in colour with a violet rim. Juicy cherry, plum and blackberry on the nose, underpinned by violets, a hint of liquorice and delicate spice. Fresh and supple on the palate: powerful, pure fruit, lively, well-integrated acidity and fine tannins ensure balance and flow. The finishing touches from the wood ageing remain skilfully in the background. A classic Barbera d'Alba full of character that combines versatility and origin – immediately accessible, with reserves for the coming years. SUPERIORE.DE

!["Bansella" Barbera Nizza DOCG 2022]()
“Bansella” Barbera Nizza DOCG 2022
Nizza DOCG – barbera heartland: sandy-loamy hills, lots of light, good aeration. The grapes are harvested selectively, fermented gently in stainless steel (short maceration time at moderate temperatures), then the wine is matured for around 12 months in used barriques (2nd.–3rd ageing) for fine refinement instead of wood dominance. Dense ruby colour with a violet rim in the glass. Ripe dark berries such as blackberry and black cherry on the nose, plus red forest fruits, a hint of jam, fine spice nuances (cinnamon, fine vanilla) and a savoury, peppery accent. Juicy and full on the palate, yet perfectly balanced: supple, finely grained tannins, lively acidity and a pithy, slightly salty flavour keep the fullness taut. The finish is long, spicy and harmonious. A modern Nice with character and drinking flow – serious, but without heaviness; exactly the aristocratic and fruit-emphasised Barbera interpretation that this origin stands for. SUPERIORE.DE

The soul of Piedmont
Barbera is one of the most traditional and at the same time underestimated grape varieties in Italy. It is deeply rooted in the culture of Piedmont, uncomplicated to grow, high-yielding and robust. However, the potential for greatness has always lain dormant beneath the surface. Today, in times of differentiated styles and terroir-conscious vinification, Barbera is experiencing a well-deserved renaissance - as a stylistically versatile red wine with structure, freshness and character. The first documentary references date back to the 13th century, but genetic studies suggest that Barbera was already native to northern Italy much earlier. Its historical centre lies in the hills around Monferrato, Asti and Alba - names that are once again shining in the world of fine red wines today.
Cool acidity & juicy fruit
Barbera wines are characterised by a deep red colour, low tannin content and a lively acidity structure - characteristics that make them unmistakable. The nose reveals juicy notes of ripe cherry, plum and violet, sometimes also hints of spices, dark chocolate or tobacco - depending on the ageing process. On the palate, Barbera is fresh, juicy, often with a silky texture and remarkable balance. Its acidity is both backbone and stimulus - it gives the wine energy and enormous ageing potential if the ageing is right. Traditionally, Barbera was drunk young and fruity - today, expressive, complex varieties with barrique ageing, depth and ageability are produced. Barbera d'Asti Superiore DOCG and Barbera d'Alba DOC in particular prove that this grape variety has long been on a par with renowned representatives.
Between Monferrato and the new world
Barbera is native to Piedmont, where it belongs to the trinity of grape varieties alongside Nebbiolo and Dolcetto. The most important appellations are: Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Barbera del Monferrato DOC (and Superiore DOCG), Barbera d'Alba DOC. Outside Piedmont, Barbera can also be found in Emilia-Romagna, in Lombardy (especially in Oltrepò Pavese), as well as in smaller quantities in California, Argentina, Uruguay and Australia. Overseas, it is often interpreted as more powerful, sometimes overripe, but sometimes loses its elegant acidity. The most respected producers include Vietti, Braida di Giacomo Bologna (pioneer of barrique ageing with "Bricco dell'Uccellone"), Michele Chiarlo, Elio Altare and Pio Cesare. These names show: Barbera is no longer a second wine, but a mainstay of modern Italian viticulture.
Ideal for Italian cuisine
In Italy, Barbera is known by various names: Barbera Nera, Barbera del Monferrato, Barbera Grossa or simply Barbera - usually combined with the indication of origin. In Argentina, it is occasionally found under Barbara or Barberá, but these are rare exceptions. In culinary terms, Barbera is a real all-rounder. Its acidity makes it the ideal accompaniment to hearty Piedmontese cuisine - for example with agnolotti, braised rabbit, brasato, but also with mature cheese, grilled meat, pizza with truffle salami or pasta with game ragout. Its fruitiness also works excellently with tomato dishes - from aubergine casserole to classic lasagne. The ideal drinking temperature is 16 to 18 °C. Lighter, fruity varieties can be drunk at 14 to 15 °C, while mature Barbera with a woody character benefits from a little more air and temperature.
Complex and extremely popular
"Barbera is a grape variety with great freedom - it can be light-footed or brooding, but it never loses its essence." - Chiara Boschis, winemaker and Barbera producer
Barbera was once Italy's most cultivated red wine variety - even before Sangiovese! It was not until the 1990s that it was overtaken by its Tuscan rival. Today, it still ranks third among red wine varieties in Italy - a sign of its unbroken popularity. SUPERIORE.DE
