“La Birritullera” Birra territoriale del Borro

      Il Borro | Tuscany

A winegrower who also brews beer? If it's a top-fermented craft berry like the "La Birritullera", it's not so absurd. This unfiltered speciality is made from our own malted barley, spelt and fine hops. It is refined with a secret local and medieval spice mixture called Drogo. It contains no other additives and is not pasteurized.

Light golden colour, fine foam. In the taste spicy, but never heavy or sweetish, but with a delicate bitter note and the elegance and depth of a good sparkling wine. A convincing reason for us not to withhold this delicacy from you. Drink this beer quietly from a white wine glass and you will be surprised! SUPERIORE.DE

This honey is truly unique, valuable and very rare (and of course BIO certified). Millefiori represents the components of the landscape in its purest form of craftsmanship. Amber. Medium fruity fragrance. In the taste beguilingly sweet, but also wild, smelling of lovage, with hints of liquorice and oriental spices. A real rarity with addiction potential and in BIO quality. "A beautiful nose of violets, lavender, dried strawberries, hibiscus and a touch of vanilla. Medium-bodied with fine tannins, pretty acidity crunch and a tangy finish." James Suckling

"First produced in the early 2000s, Il Borro now has a very good track record with this entry-level red blend. The 2016 Pian di Nova is 75% Syrah and 25% Sangiovese that goes into mostly neutral barrique for 12 months. This happy vintage is particularly fresh and direct, with a real sense of brightness and energy in terms of its primary fruit. The wine is medium dark in appearance with a mid-weight feel and plenty of fresh fruit and soft tannins to follow. I can't imagine a better choice for your favorite pasta dish." Robert Parker

    • "Polissena" Sangiovese Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO)

“Polissena” Sangiovese Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO)

Polissena also shows the typical handwriting of Il Borro: The wines are vinified as typical for the grape variety as possible and are therefore as authentically as possible in the glass, especially here in Sangiovese. In the nose fine cherry aroma with hints of wild berries, forest soil and some plum. In the drink, the typical acidity paired with a delicate fruit, a firm core and a firm final. The 12-month ageing in used and almost neutral barriques is very much in keeping with the freshness and straightforwardness of the Polissena. Big drinking pleasure! SUPERIORE.DE

"A tight and lightly chewy red with cherry and plum aromas and flavors and hints of lemon peel. Medium body. Firm and chewy." James Suckling

"Sangiovese grapes for this wine originate from the same vineyard that makes the amphorae-aged Petruna. However, the 2016 Polissena is a more conventional expression of the Tuscan grape, with fermentation in stainless steel and 12 months of barrel age in second and third year barrique. The wine is delicate yet firm, aromatic yet elegant. The bouquet offers wild berry aromas with black fruit, spice, tar and moist potting soil. There is a distinct unifying line that connects all the wines made at Il Borro, especially the Sangiovese-based bottles." Robert Parker

“Petruna Anfora” Sangiovese Toscana IGT 2017 (BIO)

Just like the equally famous neighbour Fattoria Petrolo (with his Boggina A), Il Borro can also convince us with a red wine aged in amphorae. Petruna is a pure Sangiovese, which is fermented with 12 months of shell contact in hermetically sealed amphorae. The result is surprising, not in the sense of an "interesting" experimental wine, but because the typical character of Sangiovese is fully expressed in freshness, fruit and energy. In the Bouquet dominate cherry and small red berries, in addition some orange-test. His body is of medium weight, which makes him an excellent food companion. Its fresh acidity and a knitted fabric of fine tannins increase the drinking pleasure enormously. experiment in an elegant way, we can say. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright and fresh with cherries, watermelon and orange peel. Light body. Fine tannins and crisp acidity. A pure, single vineyard sangiovese made in amphora." James Suckling

"My reaction to this wine is overwhelmingly positive. This is a pure expression of organic Sangiovese that is farmed with extreme care, down to one kilogram of fruit per plant. The grapes are fermented in clay amphorae with daily punch-downs. The clay vessels are then sealed with steel lids, and the wine is left in contact with the skins for 12 months. The results are offbeat and provocative for sure, but the wine pleases the senses thanks to its grape-skin purity and firm mid-weight texture. The freshness and energy of the fruit comes through loud and clear, and you don't feel the heat of the vintage whatsoever. I give it my thumbs up." Robert Parker

“Il Borro” Rosso Toscana IGT 2015 (BIO)

The top wine of the homonymous winery presents itself in the vintage 2015 exemplary and quasi as a reference for many other so-called Super-Tuscan of this vintage. Deep ruby red with light red reflections. In the bouquet dark fruits, spices, herbs, some leather and a fine tarry note. On the palate, the aromas then unfold powerfully and concentrated, yet it glides velvety with a wonderfully balanced acid-tannin ratio in a rich and not too broad, but long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The black currant, black cherry and herbal aromas and flavors are well-balanced, unfolding to reveal cedar, iron, sanguine and tobacco notes that add depth and expression. Fine length." Wine Spectator

"The 2015 Il Borro is an important and thickly enriched expression that shows ample power and muscle but remains elegantly modulated and contoured at the same time. The bouquet opens to dark fruit, blackberry, prune, spice, leather and tar. In the mouth, this wine is richly textured, velvety and concentrated, and it delivers balanced tannins and acidity. Il Borro has beautifully captured the warmth and exuberance of the terrific 2015 vintage." Robert Parker

"This is the best Il Borro to date with fantastic blackberry, blueberry and sandalwood aromas that follow through to a full body with masses of fruit. Yet, it remains bright and linear down the center palate. A rich and toned wine." James Suckling

“Alessandro del Borro” Syrah Toscana IGT 2012 · MAGNUM in Original-Holzkiste

We have known since Galatrona and Torrione (Fattoria Petrolo) at the latest that the still relatively unknown Valdarno region near Arezzo produces great wines. But one immediately thinks of Sangiovese, at best Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. From a small vineyard, however, the Ferragamos only vinify a pure Syrah in the really good years, which is then consistently only available in the Magnum bottle in the hand-picked specialist trade or the top gastronomy.

Expressive bouquet of blackberries, pepper and chocolaty notes. It is fleshy, juicy and impresses with a very present fruit. Full and round, well textured and flanked by wonderfully defined tannins, Alessandro dal Borro leads into a great finish. High expectable maturity potential, not only because of the 1.5l large format. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2012 Alessandro dal Borro (1.5-liter) is a pure expression of the mighty Rhône grape from the Arezzo area of Eastern Tuscany. This wine is only bottled in magnums. This is a very precise and linear expression that shows characteristic traits of blackberry, chocolate, cured meat and cracked peppercorn. This wine happily offers a greater level of complexity and textural depth compared to 2011. It showcases this power and potential of the Valdarno territory." Robert Parker

    About the winemakers
    Il Borro
    Tuscany | Chianti
    Il Borro

An organic vineyard. A Relais & Chateaux luxury resort. A horse stud. Chianina cattle. Vegetable specialities. Zero-emissions project. An entire medieval village restored. All that is true.

It all began when Ferrucio Ferragamo, president of the billion-dollar fashion clan, fell in love with a medieval village, first rented it and finally bought it. That was in 1993 and the starting signal for a showcase project of superlatives.

One hour southeast of Florence, near Arezzo. A village around a fortification from the Middle Ages. Eventful history with famous noble families. Once the Medici went hunting here, later it belonged to the Hohenlohes, the House of Savoy and finally to the Duke of Aosta. In 1993 Ferruccio Ferragamo acquired it and entrusted its management to his son Salvatore, who retired from the fashion empire and "followed his desire to start from scratch, to be a pioneer and not stay in the finished nest".

Organic farming and viticulture, original restored medieval ambience, fine olive oil and wellness spa. The attraction of progress: Salvatore wants to create a zero-emission world with complete energetic self-sufficiency. What has been created and restored here in the last twenty years could fill a book. But let's stick to wine. Because this chapter is also exciting.

The original wine cellar is probably one of the oldest preserved in Tuscany. Magnificently renovated and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the electricity comes from its own photovoltaic hill. 2004 was completed with a newly built part.

Old vineyards were carefully restructured and from the mid-1990s soils were analysed and new vineyards planned and planted. The rootstock vines, clones and grape varieties as well as the orientation were selected analytically for the respective sites. Nothing was left to chance. In addition to autochthonous grape varieties such as Sangiovese, the classic varieties Merlot, Cabernet and a little Petit Verdot were also cultivated. In 2003, "Il Borro", the first wine, came onto the market. In the following year the "Pian di Nova", which should be understood as a second wine, as in the Bordeaux system. The conversion to organic farming began in 2007 and was completed in 2012.

The vineyards are located in the hills of Valdarno, at the foot of the Pratomagno mountains, in the basin of a former lake. A mixture of sand, loam and clay, rather barren but with good drainage, offers the vines a good condition to root deeply. The climate is relatively mild, even in winter, the nearby mountains provide good ventilation. In the meantime 45 hectares are in the yield, on 300 to 500 m above sea level. The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and macerated in steel vats, and aged for a relatively long time in French wooden barrels. The aim, of course, is to maximise the terroir and the fruit. Recently, the first wines aged in terracotta amphoras have been introduced to the market.

Almost needless to say, Il Borro is a luxurious place to stay and dine. The vineyards can be explored on horseback. Or get married right here. If the Ferragamos do anything, it's perfect. This also applies to the wines, which in recent years have found their way into all guides around the world with high scores. It is good that this will then be achieved with biodynamic cultivation, conservation of resources and energy self-sufficiency. SUPERIORE.DE
