This honey is truly unique, valuable and very rare (and of course BIO certified). Millefiori represents the components of the landscape in its purest form of craftsmanship. Amber. Medium fruity fragrance. In the taste beguilingly sweet, but also wild, smelling of lovage, with hints of liquorice and oriental spices. A real rarity with addiction potential and in BIO quality. • "Borrigiano" Rosso Valdarno di Sopra DOC 2018 (BIO)

“Borrigiano” Rosso Valdarno di Sopra DOC 2018 (BIO)

Borrigiano is an enchanting cuvée that brings an ideal balance of fine and balanced wood use and fresh, lively fruit into the glass. In the nose an interesting berry aroma and some plum jam. For us, Borrigiano is an ideal companion for convivial evenings and mild pasta dishes or risottos - he shows in a charming (and affordable) way the great potential of the up-and-coming winery. SUPERIORE.DE

"This is the first wine from Il Borro to be made under the Valdarno di Sopra appellation designation (the first vintage made was 2015), and the wine's name Borrigiano means "inhabitants of the Il Borro hamlet." The 2018 Valdarno di Sopra Borrigiano is a blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Syrah that sees a brief period of cold maceration followed by ten months of aging in large oak casks. The aim here is to keep the freshness of the fruit intact, and this goal has been readily achieved. The bouquet opens to forest berry aromas with raw plum and fresh prune. This is a terrific wine with a confident, pure and easy-drinking appeal that is nothing short of charming." Robert Parker

    • "Polissena" Sangiovese Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO)

“Polissena” Sangiovese Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO)

Polissena also shows the typical handwriting of Il Borro: The wines are vinified as typical for the grape variety as possible and are therefore as authentically as possible in the glass, especially here in Sangiovese. In the nose fine cherry aroma with hints of wild berries, forest soil and some plum. In the drink, the typical acidity paired with a delicate fruit, a firm core and a firm final. The 12-month ageing in used and almost neutral barriques is very much in keeping with the freshness and straightforwardness of the Polissena. Big drinking pleasure! SUPERIORE.DE

"A tight and lightly chewy red with cherry and plum aromas and flavors and hints of lemon peel. Medium body. Firm and chewy." James Suckling

"Sangiovese grapes for this wine originate from the same vineyard that makes the amphorae-aged Petruna. However, the 2016 Polissena is a more conventional expression of the Tuscan grape, with fermentation in stainless steel and 12 months of barrel age in second and third year barrique. The wine is delicate yet firm, aromatic yet elegant. The bouquet offers wild berry aromas with black fruit, spice, tar and moist potting soil. There is a distinct unifying line that connects all the wines made at Il Borro, especially the Sangiovese-based bottles." Robert Parker

    • "Petruna Anfora" Sangiovese Toscana IGT 2017 (BIO)

“Petruna Anfora” Sangiovese Toscana IGT 2017 (BIO)

Just like the equally famous neighbour Fattoria Petrolo (with his Boggina A), Il Borro can also convince us with a red wine aged in amphorae. Petruna is a pure Sangiovese, fermented in hermetically sealed amphorae with skin contact for 12 months. The result is surprising, not in the sense of an "interesting" experimental wine, but because the typical character of Sangiovese is fully expressed in freshness, fruit and energy. The bouquet is dominated by cherry and small red berries, along with some orange zest. His body is of medium weight, which makes him an excellent eating companion. Its fresh acidity and an array of fine tannins increase the drinking pleasure enormously. Experiment succeeded in an elegant way, we can say. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, bright ruby. Very fragrant, open nose, floral, after violets, pomegranate, blood oranges, rhubarb, delicate white pepper. On the palate with lots of fruit and plenty of juice, fine texture, lively on the tongue, medium to slender body, well balanced, enjoys enormous flow, powerful tannin in the aftertaste." Falstaff

"Bright and fresh with cherries, watermelon and orange peel. Light body. Fine tannins and crisp acidity. A pure, single vineyard sangiovese made in amphora." James Suckling

"My reaction to this wine is overwhelmingly positive. This is a pure expression of organic Sangiovese that is farmed with extreme care, down to one kilogram of fruit per plant. The grapes are fermented in clay amphorae with daily punch-downs. The clay vessels are then sealed with steel lids, and the wine is left in contact with the skins for 12 months. The results are offbeat and provocative for sure, but the wine pleases the senses thanks to its grape-skin purity and firm mid-weight texture. The freshness and energy of the fruit comes through loud and clear, and you don't feel the heat of the vintage whatsoever. I give it my thumbs up." Robert Parker

On the palate, the aromas then unfold powerfully and concentrated, yet it glides velvety with a wonderfully balanced acidity-tannin ratio into a rich, well-proportioned and long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2016 Il Borro is a seamless, full-bodied red wine that presents an A-list aromatic presentation with dark fruit and plum followed by savory spice, leather and tobacco. The quality of the fruit is sweet and bright, but there is also a distinct mineral note to the wine that contrasts the sweetness with saltiness. “Bolle di Borro” Metodo Classico Rosato 2013

Spumante in a class of its own! Bolle di Borro - Sangiovese completely reinterpreted. Il Borro has been producing a pure Sangiovese sparkling wine using the champagne method (Metodo Classico) for a few years now. Fragrant, yeasty nose, fine hints of small red berries and candied citrus peel. On the palate, bread, brioche, finely chiselled Sangiovese fruit and a wonderfully creamy yet precise, crunchy, very long finish. Elegance and finesse in puezza! SUPERIORE.DE

"This gorgeous sparkling wine is fresh and balanced with impressive dryness and brightness. Very fine bubbles. Medium body. Cantaloup and light cherry flavors. Dry, vivid finish." James Suckling

"The 2013 Bolle di Borro Metodo Classico Brut is a Sangiovese-based sparkling rosé that sees an ambitious 60 months of yeast contact. This is the third vintage of the wine, and the 2013 is by far the best, thanks to the enormous clarity and purity of aromas presented. The wine opens to a light pink color with copper highlights and shows aromas of forest berry, wild cherry and freshly baked bread crust. The acidity is zesty and fresh, cleaning the palate in a beautifully effective manner." Robert Parker

    About the winemakers
    Il Borro
    Tuscany | Chianti
    Il Borro

An organic vineyard. A Relais & Chateaux luxury resort. A horse stud. Chianina cattle. Vegetable specialities. Zero-emissions project. An entire medieval village restored. All that is true.

It all began when Ferruccio Ferragamo, president of the billion-dollar fashion clan, fell in love with a medieval village, first rented it and finally bought it. That was in 1993 and the starting signal for a showcase project of superlatives.

One hour southeast of Florence, near Arezzo. A village around a fortification from the Middle Ages. Eventful history with famous noble families. Once the Medici went hunting here, later it belonged to the Hohenlohes, the House of Savoy and finally to the Duke of Aosta. In 1997 Ferruccio Ferragamo acquired it and entrusted its management to his son Salvatore, who retired from the fashion empire and "followed his desire to start from scratch, to be a pioneer and not stay in the finished nest".

Organic farming and viticulture, original restored medieval ambience, fine olive oil and wellness spa. The attraction of progress: Salvatore wants to create a zero-emission world with complete energetic self-sufficiency. What has been created and restored here in the last twenty years could fill a book. But let's stick to wine. Because this chapter is also exciting.

The original wine cellar is probably one of the oldest preserved in Tuscany. Magnificently renovated and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the electricity comes from its own photovoltaic hill. 2004 was completed with a newly built part.

Old vineyards were carefully restructured and from the mid-1990s soils were analysed and new vineyards planned and planted. The rootstock vines, clones and grape varieties as well as the orientation were selected analytically for the respective sites. Nothing was left to chance. In addition to autochthonous grape varieties such as Sangiovese, the classic varieties Merlot, Cabernet and a little Petit Verdot were also cultivated. In 2003, "Il Borro", the first wine, came onto the market. In the following year the "Pian di Nova", which should be understood as a second wine, as in the Bordeaux system. The conversion to organic farming began in 2007 avoiding chemicals and adding horn manure and was completed in 2012. In 2015 Il Borro received the organic certification.

The vineyards are located in the hills of Valdarno, at the foot of the Pratomagno mountains, in the basin of a former lake. A mixture of sand, loam and clay, rather barren but with good drainage, offers the vines a good condition to root deeply. The climate is relatively mild, even in winter, the nearby mountains provide good ventilation. In the meantime 85 hectares are in the yield, on 300 to 500 m above sea level. The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and macerated in steel vats, and aged for a relatively long time in French wooden barrels. The aim, of course, is to maximise the terroir and the fruit. Recently, the first wines aged in terracotta amphoras have been introduced to the market.

Almost needless to say, Il Borro is a luxurious place to stay and dine. The vineyards can be explored on horseback. Or get married right here. If the Ferragamos do anything, it's perfect. This also applies to the wines, which in recent years have found their way into all guides around the world with high scores. It is good that this will then be achieved along with some biodynamic practices, conservation of resources and energy self-sufficiency. SUPERIORE.DE
