“SP68” Bianco Terre Siciliane IGT 2024 (BIO)
Three thousand years of winegrowing history are condensed into one street name: Strada Provinciale 68 near Vittoria, the route along which generations of Sicilian farmers carried their amphorae and later barrels to market. Arianna Occhipinti, a pioneer of Sicilian natural wine, has created a liquid monument to this country road. Albanello and Zibibbo, two indigenous islanders, grow here on red sand over limestone. The grapes ferment together with wild yeasts in concrete, and two weeks of maceration give the Bianco its characteristic texture. Bottled unfiltered, it retains its lively cloudiness.

“Il Frappato” Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT 2023 (BIO)
"Courageous, stubborn, rebellious" – is how Arianna Occhipinti describes the wine that is most like her. Frappato, this ursicilian grape variety of peasant origin, is rooted here in calcareous sandy soils at the foot of the Monti Iblei. Forty-year-old vines near Vittoria, at an altitude of 280 metres, are cultivated biodynamically. Vinification follows the rhythm of nature: spontaneous fermentation in concrete, thirty days of maceration, then fourteen months of ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels. Bottled unfiltered, the wine retains its lively authenticity.

!["Siccagno" Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC 2021 (BIO)]()
“Siccagno” Nero d’Avola Sicilia DOC 2021 (BIO)
Siccagno is Arianna Occhipinti's personal monologue about Nero d'Avola – not a loud one, but a concentrated, quiet and deep-breathing one. The name comes from the Sicilian term for dry farming (sicco) and aptly describes the origin of this wine: deep-rooted vines in calcareous soils near Vittoria, not irrigated, consciously entrusted to nature. 2021 was a year with clear light, good aeration and a vegetative cycle without extreme heat or stress – perfect conditions for a subtly structured vintage. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented spontaneously with natural yeasts and macerated on the skins for around 30 days. The wine is matured for 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels – no haste, no fining, no filtering. Just patience and trust in what the soil tells us.

“Contrada FL Fossa di Lupo” Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT 2020 (BIO)
The Frappato Vino di Contrada FL (from Contrada Fossa di Lupo) shows a slightly looser texture than the other two Contrada wines that have been part of Arianna Occhipinti's portfolio for 4 vintages. The Contrada Fossa di Lupo provides much of the fruit used for the entire Occhipinti line. It consists of sandy limestone with red and dark brown clay veins. The wine shows aromas of red fruits, including plums and blackberries. Slight hints of exotic spices only emerge after the Frappato has had time to really unpack in the glass. This wine is perhaps the most open of the three. Only 2,700 bottles were produced. SUPERIORE.DE

!["Contrada BB Bombolieri" Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT 2020 (BIO)]()
“Contrada BB Bombolieri” Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT 2020 (BIO)
The Frappato Vino di Contrada BB from the single vineyard Bombolieri is the darkest and most saturated of the three Frappato wines. This vineyard lies high on a promontory with white limestone soils. The expression is open and accessible like the other wines, but in this wine there is an added layer of earth or potting soil to the bright red and black fruits one perceives on the nose. This wine also seems to have extra layering and textural richness. All this fruit is topped with a fresh acidity that plays a big role and makes this wine a nice partner for creamy fettuccine. !["Contrada PT Pettineo Vino" Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT 2020 (BIO)]()
“Contrada PT Pettineo Vino” Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT 2020 (BIO)
The Frappato Vino di Contrada PT (with fruit from the Contrada Pettineo) is a shade lower in colour intensity than the BB. This wine is similar to the FL in terms of accessibility and the very silky and delicate nature of its fruit. Arianna Occhipinti has achieved something marvellous for our collective understanding of the Frappato grape with the fermentation of these contrasting wines. Pettineo has sandy soils, and the Alberello vines (later converted to trellises) are over 60 years old. It is definitely on the right track, as you get a better understanding of the range of the grape variety. This expression shows bright freshness, wild berries, wild roses and hints of sweet almonds. Around 2,700 bottles were produced. SUPERIORE.DE

“Contrada PT Pettineo Vino” Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT 2021 (BIO)
Pettineo is more than just a contrada, it is a place of remembrance. Old Frappato vines, some of which are over 60 years old, take root here on sandy, slightly ferrous soil with a limestone base. The vines grow like bushes as Alberello, densely planted, deeply rooted – they yield little, but the essentials. For Arianna Occhipinti, this location is a key to the soul of Frappato: a wine that does not shine in its fruit, but in its quiet, almost floating intensity. The harvest by hand and fermented spontaneously with natural yeasts in cement tanks for around 30 days on the skins – gently, without mechanical intervention. The wine is matured traditionally and with restraint for around 20 months in cement tanks.

“Contrada FL Fossa di Lupo” Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT 2021 (BIO)
Fossa di Lupo is one of the most impressive contrade in the Vittoria region – an old hillside vineyard with sandy-clay soil over a deep limestone vein. Its north-easterly exposure and the cool downdraughts at night create a microclimate that is conducive to ripening. For Arianna Occhipinti, it is a real place that has accompanied her life as a winemaker since the very beginning. In this historic contrada north-west of Vittoria, her oldest Frappato vines are rooted in sandy soil interspersed with calcareous subsoil. A site with a history that Arianna has always considered to be the centrepiece of her work – powerful and delicate, quiet and expressive at the same time. The wine comes from 100% Frappato, harvested from vines over 60 years old. Fermentation with the vineyard's own yeasts, around 35 days on the skins, no fining, no filtration. Maturation takes place over 22 months in cement – a deliberate decision not to use wood in order to reveal the pure texture and vibrant character of Frappato.

“Grotte Alte” Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico DOCG 2019 (BIO)
Grotte Alte is more than just a wine, it is a very serene and precise commitment to its homeland. Arianna Occhipinti names it after the white limestone caves above Vittoria, where her oldest vineyards are located: broodingred soils over limestone, infused with Mediterranean herbs and wind. This is where the grapes are grown from which she makes her most personal wine – a Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico that expresses the identity of this landscape in an impressive way. The cuvée of Frappato di Vittoria and Nero d'Avola is vinified separately. After spontaneous fermentation with long maceration periods, both batches mature for around 48 months in large oak barrels before being blended and bottled. No fining, no filtration – just time, patience and respect for the origin.

“Cuvée 20° vendemmia” Frappato Terre Siciliane IGT 2023 (BIO)
Twenty harvests. Twenty years in which a revolution grew from a single hectare of abandoned vines at Fossa di Lupo. 2023 marks Arianna Occhipinti's Ventesima Vendemmia – and this anniversary deserves a wine that unites her entire terroir mosaic. Three contrade, three voices: Fossa di Lupo, the place of origin, where brown sand rests on limestone and gives the wine its earthy depth. Bombolieri, on white sand over pure limestone, provides the austere structure and mineral tension. Finally, Pettineo, with its vines over sixty years old in orange-coloured sand over tuff, contributes silky tannins and forward fruit. Spontaneous fermentation in concrete, twenty-five days on the skins, then six months in the same container and one year in Austrian oak. Bottled unfiltered, like all wines from this house.

She left Sicily to study viticulture in Milan. The fact that Arianna Occhipinti subsequently returned to her homeland despite the prevailing economic problems there is probably a rarity. The winemaker and pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Sicily, who was already very experienced at a young age, wants to revive the winegrowing tradition in the southeast of the island, like her uncle Giusto Occhipinti, owner of the Azienda Agricola COS. The landowner, who works with great passion in Vittoria but has also long been admired in London and New York, frowned upon foreign grape varieties. Instead, Arianna, who is supported on her farm by five employees, relies on Nero d'Avola and Frappato. At the age of 21, the young patriot started with a plot of land of one hectare and expanded the Azienda Agricola Occhipinti vineyard to 18 hectares. In the meantime, the rather untypical Sicilian red wines of the house belong to the best that the largest Mediterranean island has to offer. Consequently, in the year 2013 the magazine „The gourmet“ the efficient winemaker, who sends about two thirds of her assortment abroad, was named as the "Newcomer of the year" honored.
Arianna Occhipinti prefers a natural vine cultivation, selects the grapes very strictly and uses only the best fruits of the vineyards planted with about 6,000 vines per hectare. As a great follower of the Frappato, she - unlike most Sicilian winegrowers - refrains from artificial irrigation. It also bans chemicals of all kinds from the 280-metre-high vineyards. On the soils of the Sub-Apennine, consisting of red sand, lime and clay, the conditions are favourable. At night, the vineyards in the Cerasuolo area cool off relatively strongly, and the wind blows constantly from the sea.
The formerly tiny cellar of the Azienda Agricola Occhipinti has now been replaced by a new, very large cellar equipped with the latest technology. The grapes are fermented with natural yeast. Slavonian oak is rarely used for the production of the plants. The red wines produced in the traditional style are fresh, dynamic and have a personal character. They never impose themselves, but want to be rediscovered. The SP 68 is considered in the variations white and red as an excellent and uncomplicated entry wine. With its elegance and finesse, the Siccagno is even reminiscent of a Burgundian style. The Frappato, vintage 2011, a fascinating cuvée from Nero d'Avola and Frappato, was discovered by the Gambero Rosso "Tre Bicchieri" excellent.
Arianna Occhipinti has carried the coveted "Robert Parker Green Emblem" since 2022. This certification is awarded by one of the most important international wine criticism media: "The Wine Advocate". Only producers who are committed to sustainability, long-term environmental protection and biodiversity receive this exclusive award. Once a winery has been awarded, all of its wines will carry the coveted "Green Emblem" in the future. SUPERIORE.DE
"Arianna is a symbol of our green initiatives," says SOStain President Alberto Tasca of Tasca Conti d'Almerita, last year's recipient of the Robert Parker Green Emblem Award. "She is on the board of our foundation and is committed to social and territorial causes. She shows a spirit that few others have, which makes her symbol of sustainability and humanism." "Similar to her uncle ... Arianna Occhipinti also strives to bring the conditions of her homeland ... into the bottle as realistically as possible. It uses local grape varieties for this purpose, but above all methods of pressing that do without any technical bells and whistles and the arsenal of additives commonly used in cellar production."
