Grotte Alte is more than just a wine, it is a very serene and precise commitment to its homeland. Arianna Occhipinti names it after the white limestone caves above Vittoria, where her oldest vineyards are located: broodingred soils over limestone, infused with Mediterranean herbs and wind. This is where the grapes are grown from which she makes her most personal wine – a Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico that expresses the identity of this landscape in an impressive way. The cuvée of Frappato di Vittoria and Nero d'Avola is vinified separately. After spontaneous fermentation with long maceration periods, both batches mature for around 48 months in large oak barrels before being blended and bottled. No fining, no filtration – just time, patience and respect for the origin.
Deep, transparent ruby red in the glass with garnet-red reflections. The bouquet is multi-layered and lively: ripe cherry, dark raspberry, verbena, orange zest, tea rose, Mediterranean scrub and a salty minerality reminiscent of crushed limestone. On the palate, Grotte Alte is both clear and powerful, a wine full of vigour, depth and inner calm. The tannins are silky and tightly woven, the acidity finely interwoven, the finish long, tart and spicy with an almost sacred stillness. Grotte Alte is Arianna Occhipinti's most poetic interpretation of the Sicilian south-east. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Arianna Occhipinti 2019 Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico Grotte Alte shows a medium-dark appearance with sweet cherry, crème de cassis and crushed rose. With a little more time in the glass, it reveals a subtle mineral note and a hint of campfire ash. This wine reflects the chalky soils typically found in Vittoria, Sicily." Wine Advocate
"At this stage, it's a little more shy than the Vini di Contrada: aniseed, sandalwood and a Burgundian hint of animal musk overlay earthy red cherries and red roses. Complex but youthfully dense, blood orange and savoury minerals take centre stage, followed by pinpoint tannins and a hint of sturdy herbal freshness, while a kiss of oak spice frames the long and racy finish."
